ANNA'S POV
I needed to get some air. After most of the morning dodging questions from my mother and curious glances from my father, I decided it was best to take a walk through the town. Maybe if I spend some time alone it would help clear my head and remind me of what I loved about Pine Hollow. The town didn't really change much in the years I’d been gone. The same cobblestone streets lined with festive garlands, the same little shops decorated with twinkling Christmas lights, and the same bakery where I’d spent so many afternoons as a teenager. It was nostalgic, yet suffocating. Unfortunately, the people here haven't changed. As I walked, I could feel their eyes on me—the silent stares from behind windows, whispers that stopped just as I turned around. They were talking about me. About the divorce. About Jack. No matter how much I tried to block it out, the murmurs snuck through. “She’s back.” “I heard he left her for another woman.” “Poor thing. And with a child, too.” My hands balled into fists. I don't need their pity or judgement. The weight of it all began to press down on me, and I turned toward the mall, hoping for some form of escape. Inside, the holiday decorations were in full swing. A huge Christmas tree stood in the middle of the mall, surrounded by crowds of families and couples laughing and shopping for gifts. I tried to lose myself in the festive chaos, to feel invisible among the crowd of strangers. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a familiar face. Sarah. Relief washed over me. Sarah had always been the fun, easygoing one in the family. The one who could make me laugh even on my darkest days. Seeing her here felt like a blessing, a chance to distract myself. I moved closer, pushing through the crowd to reach her. I was about to call out her name when I froze in my tracks. My smile vanished, replaced by a sharp, gut-wrenching disbelief. Sarah wasn’t alone. She was with someone—a man. They were standing close, her hand on his chest, his arm around her waist. At first, I couldn’t process what I was seeing. And then Sarah leaned in, wrapping her arms around him and kissing him passionately. It was Jack. My heart dropped into my stomach. My breath caught in my throat. Jack, my ex-husband, the man who had destroyed my life, was here. With Sarah. My own cousin. I couldn’t believe it. My mind raced, as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing. How long has this been going on? How could she? My legs moved on their own, taking me closer to them. I was ready to confront them, to demand answers. I was ready to pour out my full anger But before I could reach them, a hand grabbed my arm and yanked me backward. “What the—” I spun around, ready to lash out, but stopped when I saw who it was. Ethan. He pulled me into a corner, away from the crowd and out of sight of Jack and Sarah. His face was serious, his grip firm but not harsh. “What are you doing?” I hissed, trying to pull away. “Don’t,” he said, his voice low and urgent. “Don’t go out there.” I glared at him, my anger boiling over. “Let me go, Ethan. They need to hear this from me.” “No,” he said firmly, blocking my path. “This isn’t the time or the place.” I stared at him, unbelievably. “Not the time or place? Ethan, that’s my ex-husband of a day and my cousin! They’ve been sneaking around behind my back, and you want me to just stand here and do nothing?” “Yes,” he said, his eyes boring into mine. “Because making a scene right now isn’t going to help anything. Trust me.” I froze, his words sinking in. Trust him? How could I trust anyone after what I’d just seen? My hands trembled as I pointed toward the direction where Jack and Sarah had been. “Did you know? Did you know about this?” Ethan’s jaw tightened, and he didn’t respond immediately. That silence was enough to send alarm bells ringing in my head. “Answer me,” I demanded. “Did you know?” He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Anna, please—” “How long, Ethan?” My voice cracked, but I refused to let myself cry. “How long have you known?” His hesitation spoke volumes. “Before you married Jack.” The air left my lungs in a rush. I stumbled backward, leaning against the wall for support. My vision blurred as his words echoed in my mind. Before I married Jack. “You knew,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “You knew all this time, and you didn’t tell me?” “I wanted to,” he said, his tone pleading. “But I didn’t think it was my place. I didn’t know how to—” “Don’t,” I snapped, cutting him off. “Don’t you dare try to justify this. You knew he was cheating on me with my own cousin, and you said nothing. You let me marry him.” “Anna, it wasn’t that simple—” “Wasn’t it?” I pushed him away, anger and betrayal coursing through me. “You could have stopped this, Ethan. You could have stopped everything.” He reached for me again, but I recoiled, shaking my head. “Stay away from me.” “Anna, please,” he called after me as I turned and ran. I didn’t stop, didn’t look back. I burst through the mall doors, the cold air hitting me like a slap to the face. My mind was a whirlwind of emotions—anger, betrayal, disbelief, and heartbreak. I flagged down a cab and climbed inside, ignoring Ethan’s voice as he chased after me. As the car pulled away, I caught one last glimpse of him standing on the sidewalk, his hands on his hips, his face filled with regret. I leaned back in the seat, closing my eyes as tears streamed down my cheeks. The betrayal I felt from Jack and Sarah was unbearable, but Ethan’s silence cut even deeper. He had been someone I trusted, someone I thought I could rely on. Now, I didn’t know who to trust anymore.Anna’s POVAs soon as the cab pulled up in front of my home, I barely waited for it to stop before pushing the door open and rushing out. My chest felt tight, as if the weight of everything I’d seen and heard today was pressing down on me with unbearable force. My legs carried me on autopilot to the front door. The silence was a relief. No voices, no questions. My dad was out, and my mom had taken Lily Christmas shopping. For once, I was grateful for the emptiness. I kicked off my boots, leaving them scattered by the door, and went upstairs to my room. The moment I closed my bedroom door behind me, I broke. A sob escaped my lips as I leaned against the door, sliding down to the floor. How could they? Jack, the man I’d trusted with my life, my heart, my future. Sarah, my cousin, my blood, someone I’d grown up with and trusted completely. And Ethan... Ethan’s betrayal was a different kind of pain. He’d known. Known about Jack’s affair, known about Sarah’s involvement, known everyt
ANNA’S POVAfter Ethan left, I walked back and forth in my room. My mind was racing. I thought about the land, the gold mine, and my grandfather. I had all the pieces, but I couldn't make sense of them.If what Ethan said was true, then Jack's interest in me wasn't about love. He wanted to own and control me. He wanted the land and the gold mine. This thought made my stomach hurt.I couldn't sit still. I needed answers. There was only one person who could help me - my father.I found him in his study. He was sitting behind his big oak desk. He looked up when I came in. He smiled, and his face lit up. This usually made me feel happy and safe. But this time, it didn't calm me down.“Anna, everything okay?” he asked, his brow furrowing as he noticed my tense expression. “No,” I said bluntly, closing the door behind me. “Dad, I need to ask you something. It’s important.” “Of course.” He leaned back in his chair, giving me his full attention. “What is it?” “The gold mine,” I said, my
ANNA'S POV I burst out of the hospital, rage inside me like a large fire. I didn’t want to talk to anyone—not my mom, not Ethan, nobody. I wanted to be alone, in a quiet space to fight the storm of feelings inside me.When I got home, I opened the door and slammed it shut hard. My chest was tight with anger as I stomped into the living room. The fury was so strong that it filled my head. I swept everything off the table with one swift move. Books, papers, and stuff spilled everywhere, but I didn’t care. The noise hardly reached my ears.I had never felt this much anger before. It was like a fire that wanted to eat me alive. My mind was crowded with thoughts of Jack—how he had lied, hurt my family, and left us broken. The betrayal was too much to bear, and it pressed down on me until my legs felt weak.Hot tears ran down my cheeks. Soon, my sobs were out of control. My body shook, overwhelmed by the hurt. Ethan's POVAs I entered my house, I slammed the door shut. My cheeks burned with anger, and my fists were clenched beside me. Anna had such a strong head on her shoulders. The nerve she had considering everything she stood to lose.I drag myself to the living room and thought about her, feeling proud of Anna’s strength and independence as a woman. Yeah, those qualities are what attracted me to her in the beginning. Instead of admiration or appreciation of her bravery, I felt annoyance. She had no sense of what she was jumping into. Jack was brutal and cruel and always got what he wanted. I walked around the living room non-stop hoping to ease my stress. I had no option but to reach out to her and make her understand. Her life was at stake, and she had to understand the repercussions of her actions, but whenever I tried to convince Anna, she would strike me as an irrelevant person who she could easil
Anna's POVI slowly opened my eyes and took a moment to understand where I was. The room was dimly lit, and as my vision cleared, I saw Jack’s wicked grin staring back at me. “Well, well, well,” Jack said with a smirk that made my skin crawl. His voice was filled with malice. “Look who’s finally awake.”I attempted to sit up, but a sudden wave of dizziness hit me hard, forcing me to fall back onto the bed. I closed my eyes for a second, hoping the feeling would pass.“What do you want from me, Jack?” I tried to sound brave, but my voice shook slightly.Jack let out a mocking chuckle. “Oh, Anna. You’re so naive. You really don’t understand what’s happening, do you?”I shook my head, pretending to be confused and unknowing. “I don’t know what you mean. What are you talking about?”Jack raised one eyebrow, a glimmer of curiosity in his eyes. “Really? You have no clue about your… about Sarah? About me? Or the gold?”I played along, keeping my expression blank. “sarah? You? Gold? What are

He does that when he's irritated or annoyed."What is there not to understand Anna?...."A WHOLE LOT!" I yelled. I covered my face with both my hands, trying to steady my nerves. "I'm so sorry for yelling. I didn't mean to." But his face was still the same - expressionless. Like what I was doing or saying meant nothing to him. "I really want to understand what's going on Jack.""Why are you playing dumb? You're pissing me off. What's there not to get? I-want-a-divorce." He said."And that is what I don't get. How can you want a divorce? Why will you want a divorce? After ten years of being together? We have a beautiful daughter Jack! everything we've built together. You'
ANNA'S POV I took one last look at the house I had spent ten years of my life in before turning and entering the taxi that was to take us to the airport.Lily sat beside me giggling about our visit to granny, if only she knew. It didn't take long for us to arrive at pine hollow. The snow fell in hurried flutters, covering the small village in white. I shivered as I stepped out of the car, pulling my coat tighter around me. 8 year old Lily stepped out after me, her pink boots clinking after her.“Mom, look!” she twirled under the falling flakes, her laughter ringing out into the frosty air. “It’s like a snow globe!” I smiled faintly. Though my heart was heavy, I couldn't let Lily see it. I was home, but it really didn't feel like home just yet. The towering pine trees and the small stone cottages lining the village road were exactly as I remembered, but the warmth I had once felt was gone. Coming back here was a choice, it was my only escape.“Let’s get inside before we freeze,” I
