ANNA'S POV
I blinked severally as if it would help me understand what he was saying because truly couldn't. My breaths were coming out laboured and shaky. Was there something I had missed? "I..I really don't get what you're saying Jack. I don't." I said, trying hard not to let the tears drop. I saw him roll his eyes. He does that when he's irritated or annoyed. "What is there not to understand Anna?.... "A WHOLE LOT!" I yelled. I covered my face with both my hands, trying to steady my nerves. "I'm so sorry for yelling. I didn't mean to." But his face was still the same - expressionless. Like what I was doing or saying meant nothing to him. "I really want to understand what's going on Jack." "Why are you playing dumb? You're pissing me off. What's there not to get? I-want-a-divorce." He said. "And that is what I don't get. How can you want a divorce? Why will you want a divorce? After ten years of being together? We have a beautiful daughter Jack! everything we've built together. You're just going to throw it all away?" My voice cracked, despite my efforts to stay calm. He kissed his teeth, shaking his head as he went over to the couch to sit. "It doesn't matter. I'm sick of this... "YOU CANNOT BE SICK OF THIS!" I yelled, cutting him off. "You're really going to sit there and tell me you're sick of this? Of us? Of our life together?" I spat, my words laced with venom. "I left my family, my home because of you.... "Did I ask you to?" He asked nonchalantly. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. I tried to process his words, Jack's indifference fueled my anger. His nonchalant shrug sent a chill down my spine. "It doesn't matter, Anna. I've made up my mind." He said again. I felt a wave of desperation wash over me. "No, it can't be that simple. There has to be a reason. Something I can fix." My words trailed off, pleading with him to reconsider. But Jack's expression remained resolute, leaving me with a sense of hopelessness and despair. "What about our daughter, Jack? Have you thought about how this will affect her?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Jack's silence was deafening, and I knew at that moment that our marriage was truly over. But I still wasn't willing to believe it, I wasn't going to let it end like this. "Babe, I'm sorry. If I... "What in the world are you apologising for?" He asked, rolling his eyes again. "For what I did wrong. I'm sorry if I did something to offend you, I'm sorry if I wasn't good enough. I promise to change. To try my best to... "You can't fix this Anna. It's over, I'm sick of this, sick of you. Let's just split up." "No, no, no." I said, shaking my head vigorously, finally allowing the tears to pour. "We have our whole life ahead of us. We've made plans. It's Christmas day to Christmas. We had it all planned out. What should I tell Lily?" He waved his hands dismissively. "You'll think of something. I know you will buy this? We're done." "But... I was Interrupted by the buzzing of his phone. He looked at the screen and I could swear I saw him smile a little, just before his expression went blank. All he said was. "I'm handling it. I'll call you back." Then it began to dawn on me. It was because of her. He was leaving me because of her. I had known for the longest time that Jack was cheating on me but never once had I thought it would get this far. That he would want me gone because of another woman. "It's because of her, isn't it? It's because of that woman." Jack quickly looked away, avoiding my eyes. "Anna, don't make this harder than it needs to be." He said, but his voice held no form of remorse. "Harder than it-?"a bitter laugh escaped my throat. "You're destroying our life, our family, everything we've built together and you're worried about making it harder? Unbelievable!" I exclaimed. He didn't say a word. His silence confirmed my suspicions. I felt a wave of rage wash over me. "Who is she?" I demanded, my voice low and menacing. "WHO THE HELL IS SHE?" I Screamed. "Jeez! Anna! Can you stop yelling? We have neighbours who are asleep right now." He said, glancing at his phone. Neighbours? He was worried about the neighbours and not his wife he was hurting? "Who-is-she?" I asked again. Slowly this time. Jack's expression turned cold, his jaw clenched. "That's none of your business." "None of my business?" I repeated, incredulous. "You're leaving me, your wife of ten years, for another woman, and it's none of my business?" I took a step closer, my eyes blazing. "Tell me. Who is she?" Jack stood, his eyes locked on mine, a hint of defiance in his gaze. "You'll find out soon enough." With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me shattered and reeling. I collapsed onto the couch, my body wracked with sobs. Lily's face flashed in my mind, and I knew I had to be strong for her. But the pain and betrayal threatened to consume me. As I wept, I heard the door open and I thought, maybe, just maybe it was all a bad joke and he was going to say 'got ya' but what I Heard next told me there was absolutely no hope for us. "The papers are in the study. I'm going out and when I return, you had better have already signed them." The door closed behind Jack, symbolizing the end of our marriage and the beginning of a painful, uncertain journey. If I had been told ten years ago that a once blissful union, my happy marriage would one day end like this, I would not have believed it but here we are.ANNA'S POV I took one last look at the house I had spent ten years of my life in before turning and entering the taxi that was to take us to the airport.Lily sat beside me giggling about our visit to granny, if only she knew. It didn't take long for us to arrive at pine hollow. The snow fell in hurried flutters, covering the small village in white. I shivered as I stepped out of the car, pulling my coat tighter around me. 8 year old Lily stepped out after me, her pink boots clinking after her.“Mom, look!” she twirled under the falling flakes, her laughter ringing out into the frosty air. “It’s like a snow globe!” I smiled faintly. Though my heart was heavy, I couldn't let Lily see it. I was home, but it really didn't feel like home just yet. The towering pine trees and the small stone cottages lining the village road were exactly as I remembered, but the warmth I had once felt was gone. Coming back here was a choice, it was my only escape.“Let’s get inside before we freeze,” I
ANNA'S POVI needed to get some air. After most of the morning dodging questions from my mother and curious glances from my father, I decided it was best to take a walk through the town. Maybe if I spend some time alone it would help clear my head and remind me of what I loved about Pine Hollow. The town didn't really change much in the years I’d been gone. The same cobblestone streets lined with festive garlands, the same little shops decorated with twinkling Christmas lights, and the same bakery where I’d spent so many afternoons as a teenager. It was nostalgic, yet suffocating. Unfortunately, the people here haven't changed. As I walked, I could feel their eyes on me—the silent stares from behind windows, whispers that stopped just as I turned around. They were talking about me. About the divorce. About Jack. No matter how much I tried to block it out, the murmurs snuck through. “She’s back.” “I heard he left her for another woman.” “Poor thing. And with a child, too.”
Anna’s POVAs soon as the cab pulled up in front of my home, I barely waited for it to stop before pushing the door open and rushing out. My chest felt tight, as if the weight of everything I’d seen and heard today was pressing down on me with unbearable force. My legs carried me on autopilot to the front door. The silence was a relief. No voices, no questions. My dad was out, and my mom had taken Lily Christmas shopping. For once, I was grateful for the emptiness. I kicked off my boots, leaving them scattered by the door, and went upstairs to my room. The moment I closed my bedroom door behind me, I broke. A sob escaped my lips as I leaned against the door, sliding down to the floor. How could they? Jack, the man I’d trusted with my life, my heart, my future. Sarah, my cousin, my blood, someone I’d grown up with and trusted completely. And Ethan... Ethan’s betrayal was a different kind of pain. He’d known. Known about Jack’s affair, known about Sarah’s involvement, known everyt
ANNA’S POVAfter Ethan left, I walked back and forth in my room. My mind was racing. I thought about the land, the gold mine, and my grandfather. I had all the pieces, but I couldn't make sense of them.If what Ethan said was true, then Jack's interest in me wasn't about love. He wanted to own and control me. He wanted the land and the gold mine. This thought made my stomach hurt.I couldn't sit still. I needed answers. There was only one person who could help me - my father.I found him in his study. He was sitting behind his big oak desk. He looked up when I came in. He smiled, and his face lit up. This usually made me feel happy and safe. But this time, it didn't calm me down.“Anna, everything okay?” he asked, his brow furrowing as he noticed my tense expression. “No,” I said bluntly, closing the door behind me. “Dad, I need to ask you something. It’s important.” “Of course.” He leaned back in his chair, giving me his full attention. “What is it?” “The gold mine,” I said, my
ANNA'S POV I burst out of the hospital, rage inside me like a large fire. I didn’t want to talk to anyone—not my mom, not Ethan, nobody. I wanted to be alone, in a quiet space to fight the storm of feelings inside me.When I got home, I opened the door and slammed it shut hard. My chest was tight with anger as I stomped into the living room. The fury was so strong that it filled my head. I swept everything off the table with one swift move. Books, papers, and stuff spilled everywhere, but I didn’t care. The noise hardly reached my ears.I had never felt this much anger before. It was like a fire that wanted to eat me alive. My mind was crowded with thoughts of Jack—how he had lied, hurt my family, and left us broken. The betrayal was too much to bear, and it pressed down on me until my legs felt weak.Hot tears ran down my cheeks. Soon, my sobs were out of control. My body shook, overwhelmed by the hurt. Ethan's POVAs I entered my house, I slammed the door shut. My cheeks burned with anger, and my fists were clenched beside me. Anna had such a strong head on her shoulders. I couldn't believe she would risk her life and safety and want to face jack head on. The nerve she had considering everything she stood to lose.I drag myself to the living room and thought about her, feeling proud of Anna’s strength and independence as a woman. Yeah, those qualities are what attracted me to her in the beginning. Instead of admiration or appreciation of her bravery, I felt annoyance. She had no sense of what she was jumping into. Jack was brutal and cruel and always got what he wanted. I walked around the living room non-stop hoping to ease my stress. I had no option but to reach out to her and make her understand. Her life was at stake, and she had to understand the repercussions of her actions, but whenever I tried to convince Anna, she would strike me as an irrelevant person who she could easil
Anna's POVI slowly opened my eyes and took a moment to understand where I was. The room was dimly lit, and as my vision cleared, I saw Jack’s wicked grin staring back at me. “Well, well, well,” Jack said with a smirk that made my skin crawl. His voice was filled with malice. “Look who’s finally awake.”I attempted to sit up, but a sudden wave of dizziness hit me hard, forcing me to fall back onto the bed. I closed my eyes for a second, hoping the feeling would pass.“What do you want from me, Jack?” I tried to sound brave, but my voice shook slightly.Jack let out a mocking chuckle. “Oh, Anna. You’re so naive. You really don’t understand what’s happening, do you?”I shook my head, pretending to be confused and unknowing. “I don’t know what you mean. What are you talking about?”Jack raised one eyebrow, a glimmer of curiosity in his eyes. “Really? You have no clue about your… about Sarah? About me? Or the gold?”I played along, keeping my expression blank. “sarah? You? Gold? What are
