“Be careful!” I cried as I scurried toward the maid, who was on the verge of falling down the stairs.
Fortunately, I reached her in time. She looked up at me with wide, startled eyes. "Thank you so much, Miss. You are so kind,” she said, bowing deeply.
Pleased, I smiled warmly. “Of course. You’re all like family to me.”
“Miss Flora,” called a house servant as she hurried over, holding my phone. “It’s Kayla. She's been trying to reach you.”
I accepted the phone and barely got it to my ear before Kayla’s voice burst through the line. “Where have you been? I’ve been calling forever!”
“Sorry. I’ve been busy overseeing the decorations and everything else for tonight’s celebration.”
I was supervising the preparations for the ceremony marking the return of my fiancé, Zack Larkin, the fiercest warrior in the East Hallow Pack. Though my father was the alpha of our pack, Zack had contributed the most to its success. He made me so proud; I couldn't begin to express how much I loved him.
“Oh, come on, Flora,” Kayla said. “It’s just Zack coming back from the border. It’s not like it’s the alpha king.”
I froze mid-step. “The alpha king?” I asked, my brow furrowed. Why would she be mentioning the alpha king?
“Yeah! Guess what? Word is, he’s coming to visit our pack soon.”
Aron Elton, the alpha of all alphas, ruler over countless realms, was coming to visit our pack?
“They say he’s incredibly attractive,” Kayla added in a singsong voice. “The dreamiest of dreamy men will be here! Can you imagine?”
Dreamy? Maybe. Ruthless? Definitely. The stories were legendary.
After a few more words of excitement from her, we ended the call, and I got back to the preparations, while thinking about the news she’d conveyed.
My loyalty was to Zack, so other men, no matter how dreamy, didn’t interest me. I also didn’t understand why so many women seemed to fall for this alpha king, considering his reputation for cruelty.
Regardless, I had never met him, and frankly, I didn’t care to. Why would I want to bother when I already had the man of my dreams, a man I’d fallen for at first sight? At the time, I was sixteen; he was nineteen. Now, I couldn’t believe how quickly three years had flown by. Perhaps people lose track of time when they’re in love?
We weren’t fated mates, but we didn’t care about the mate bond. We had chosen each other and, before he departed, Zack left me with a promise that echoed in my heart. “When I get back, I’ll give you the biggest wedding.”
That was three months ago, and it was the longest we’d ever been apart. My father had sent him to deal with rebel rogues at the border, but not before he approved our engagement. As the pack’s Beta, Zack had fulfilled his duty with honor, and now, he was finally coming home.
“Flora.” One of the older maids caught my attention. “You’d better go and get ready,” she said with a warm smile, while tapping her wrist.
I nodded and headed to my bedroom suite. After a shower, I approached the gown I had chosen for the evening. As I was about to touch it, footsteps sounded outside my room. I assumed it was Milani, my lady’s maid, who would no doubt urge me to hurry.
As she entered, I smiled. “I’ll change in a minute. Stop rushing me.”
But Milani wasn’t wearing her usual smile. Her face was flushed, her expression tense.
I frowned, turning to face her fully. “What’s wrong?”
She hesitated, then bowed her head. “Miss... Zack is waiting for you in the lobby of the packhouse.”
“Zack is back?” I breathed, excitement bubbling within me.
I was about to change when Milani interrupted again. “Miss...”
Something in her voice made me pause. Her gaze flicked to mine—worried, almost anxious.
“What is it?” I asked, my heart sinking slightly.
She sighed before speaking carefully. “Zack brought a woman with him.”
Her words hit me like a punch to the stomach. My breath caught, and my heart skipped a beat.
“A... woman?” I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper.
Where had this woman come from? And what was her role in his life? “Maybe she’s just a friend,” I muttered, forcing myself to stay calm. Still, I rushed to the lobby, where the sight of Zack with a petite woman nestled in his arms brought me to a screeching halt.
My chest tightened. Please don’t let this be what it looks like.
Zack saw me, his face lighting up with a smile. He approached and took my hands in his. “Flora,” he said gently, “I found your sister.”
I stared at him, stunned. “My... sister?” I wasn’t aware I had one.
I’d been adopted, yes, but my father had never mentioned another child. Nonetheless, as my gaze shifted to him, tears and recognition shone in his eyes.
He approached her with open arms. “I finally found you, my dear,” he said, embracing her tightly.
His joy left me speechless as he turned to me. “Take care of Alora, Flora,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. “She has suffered greatly. We need to make it up to her.”
I nodded, still reeling from the revelation.
Then Alora turned to me, her voice trembling. “Sister, you’re so beautiful and capable. I’m so grateful to be here...”
I was about to comfort her, but Zack’s hands slipped from mine.
I froze as he moved to Alora, pulling her into his arms.
“It’s not your fault,” he murmured, patting her back. “This is your home now.”
I stood there, watching him wipe her tears and offer her soft words of comfort. “Welcome to the East Hallow Pack,” he said warmly.
I took a shaky breath, a sinking feeling in my chest. Something told me my life was about to change.
I could not believe what she was saying. Why would Alpha William like me or want to marry me?I pushed her with all of my strength. Why was I so vulnerable? I did not have my wolf's strength like hers. The push caused Alora to move from the bed. She held a wall and leaned her back against it.She chuckled when she saw my shocked expression."What? Don't you already know about it? You have been planning this for a long time."I frowned at her. "When did I plan? What are you talking about?"She folded her arms against her chest and replied,"At first, I thought letting you go was not a good idea. I won't lie. I was envious when I heard Alpha William, our pack's wealthiest Alpha, wanted you for himself. Though I am with Zack now, that doesn't mean I would let you be with any Alpha. I believe you should marry another orphan like yourself who will not hold a high rank."Tears could not stop flowing down my face as I stared at her. She had a deep-seated hatred for me. Why? Just because his
"No!"I shook my head many times. I could not fall for the king.“Kayla, you have asked that question before. I am going to tell you again. There is nothing like that.”Kayla did not talk about that matter again. But I noticed doubts in her eyes.I could not help but sigh. All of my interactions with King Aron came to mind. I bit my bottom lip as I remembered how he asked me to go to him if I needed help. After spending some time, Kayla left the pack house. I lay down on my bed, staring at the ceiling."His arm is wounded. Who dared to attack the king?" I murmured.I was deep in thought when my bedroom door opened. When I turned my head, I saw my father, Alpha Joshua.I tried to sit up quickly, but hissed in pain. I nearly forgot my right leg was bandaged."I heard you got your leg bandaged," My father said, coming over to the bed.He helped me sit up and took a seat on the edge of the bed. He rubbed my hair and uttered,"When will your bandage be taken off?""One month, Dad," I repli
"What video?"I asked Kayla as I was startled. Did anyone record any videos of the king helping me in the hospital? If they did, how could he dismiss the rumors? He was last seen with me while wearing a mask, and no one knew he was the king. What if I caused his reputation to be damaged here? After all, I was not even the real daughter of an Alpha. I was adopted, a girl who had no idea who her parents were."What's wrong? Why are you looking pale after hearing about another video?" Kayla questioned me suspiciously.I shook my head. "Nothing. I just want to know."Kayla furrowed her brows. "Babe, are you hiding something from me? You are free to share anything with me. I am your best friend."I took a deep breath and decided to tell her everything. Her expression changed when she learned that the king had helped me again."Flora, you can't think it's just a coincidence, can you? You both kept bumping each other without any plan. Or..."I looked at her with interest. "Or what?"I was ho
"Thank you so much."I said to Doctor Ken, who came outside to assist me in getting into a taxi. I told him many times that he did not have to do it and that I could go alone. However, he kept referring to me as the king's people, saying he did not want to disappoint him. After getting into the taxi, I took a look at the clutch beside me. I did not know how long I would have to use it. Doctor Ken told me that I would be fine in one month. But still, I was afraid of it.The taxi came to a halt in front of the pack house. I paid the taxi driver and got out using the clutch.I applied all of the pressure to my left leg while holding the crutch beneath my arm. I had to limp my way toward the pack house. The guards looked at me with surprise. One of them questioned me."What happened to you?"I looked at the guard with a frown. "Didn't you notice how I was in pain when I left the pack house?"The guard seemed taken aback. He might have had a different thought when he saw Zack carrying me o
One of the nurses patted my shoulder. "Did you think he was waiting for you here? You may be important, but he is the King."I looked at the empty stool where Aron had been sitting before I left the room.'Did I really expect him to be here with me?'Doctor Ken soon entered the room to review my report. He pinned the x-ray report to a whiteboard and lit it up to show me the result. After circling the back of the ankle with his fingers, Dr. Ken said,“This is where one of your bones cracked. A plaster is necessary.”I was taken aback. "Doctor, will I not be able to walk properly again?"He gave me a surprised look before shaking his head. I was startled. I assumed he was saying I was correct; I would never be able to walk properly again; perhaps I could walk with a limp."Doctor, please do something."He let out a chuckle. I looked at him in confusion.“Please, just relax. You can walk again. But your leg needs some time. You will need plaster for at least four weeks.”I rubbed my fore
I felt a chill go through me. The air around me seemed to freeze as I stared at the man. He was mysterious, but also dangerous. His eyes had the power to burn anything with his gaze if he wanted to destroy. The thoughts of him killing the people and demolishing the pack made me feel sick. The blood, the war, the cries—everything was something I never wanted to witness.King Aron turned his head to look at me. When his eyes locked with mine, I saw the smirk fade from his face.I blinked and lowered my head. Was I more afraid of him?But his voice was not cold, but rather softer than I expected. It arrived and made its way to my ears smoothly."Girl, you are too young to know who your people and enemies are. Always rely on your brain rather than your heart. Keep your eyes open."I lifted my gaze to meet his eyes again. I nodded my head when I noticed his eyes were calm."Thank you for helping me, Your Majesty."He did not respond as if he was looking through me, attempting to read my th
I was mesmerized by how he was taking care of me. He knew he could not wander the hospital since he was the king, and it would only give people a chance to start gossiping, so he told the doctor to let the nurses accompany me.Not just any ordinary nurse, but nurses assigned to assist the doctor. The doctor's reaction made me wonder if he was a big doctor.Doctor Ken nodded his head. "I am sending them right now, Your Majesty." He then left the cabin.I cast a glance at King Aron. He remained calm, but his gaze was fixed on my right leg.I felt a burn in my leg as if his gaze was so intense that it was affecting me."I could go by myself," I murmured, although I knew it would be tough for me.He grabbed a stool near the bed and sat down. I gulped, recalling the day when I woke up in the Water Garden Villa."How is your day going at the pack house?"I raised my head and looked at him. He was also looking at me.His eyes were serene but dark. Despite knowing that I could not read them,
Flora's POVInside a private cabin in the hospital,I was sitting on a bed, waiting for a doctor to come. I looked around the cabin. It looked like a vip cabin.I was thankful to King Aron for helping me get here. However, I could not afford this cabin. I did not want to bother my father about this.King Aron said he knew a doctor here, and he would check me. I could only thank him.He got a phone call a few minutes ago; he went outside the cabin to talk.I was all alone in the cabin. I was embarrassed to show him my face again. Zack had humiliated me enough today. When King Aron asked how I got hurt, I told him that I fell from the stairs. He then asked why I was with Zack. His question was very direct. But I could not lie to him.“Zack was there when I fell. So he came with me to help me today.”That's what I told the king.I knew I did not need to lie. He had seen my bad days and supported me. However, the more I would tell him about my sufferings, the more it would bother him.The
Zack's eyes widened in shock. Alora, on the other hand, felt her heartbeat slow in fright. She was startled."K-King Aron’s car?"Her gaze shifted to the car, which she had damaged. She never expected anything like that to happen when she started her car.She clearly remembered how to press the brake on time. She had no idea how her car had come into contact with her own. Now that it was the Alpha King's car, no one would believe her.Her lips started to shake just like her knees. She bit her bottom lip, nearly bleeding from fear. The young man was none other than Beta Joy, the Alpha King Aron's beta.Anyone looking at him from a distance could tell he was powerful. The men around them were all bodyguards of the king. Because the king did not want to draw attention in this pack, he sent them away.Zack felt a drop of sweat on his forehead. Just before coming here, he had gotten the opportunity to meet the Alpha King. It was his lucky day that the king talked to him.King Aron was more
