Chapter 35: The Cost of War

Just outside the stone walls of Shadowfang, the fires burned low, casting eerie shadows along the stones. The atmosphere was heavy with the scent of blood and sweat, a bittersweet incense as warriors whispered to their wounds. A defeat was suffered, but the war was far from lost.

I clenched the edges of the long war table, knuckles white. My children lay sleeping in the adjacent room, among some of the most loyal ever to serve a fortress. Their safety was all that was keeping me from falling apart.

Ethan stood by my side, silent but always vigilant. Selene pushed against the far wall, crossed her arms, and peered into the room, as if waiting for another attack. Dorian roamed, his face a mask of less information. Rhea sat at the head of the table, wrapping a bandage around her arm, her gaze set and pensive.

Finally she spoke up. “We need to discuss what happened out there.”

I held my breath, my voice raspy. “And what do you mean by ‘how we were torn apart? W

Chapter 36: The Path to RuinCallum’s words hung upon me like a crushing cloud. My mother had hidden me. They’d been hunting me long before I knew there had an Order out there in the world. And now, I was going to have my children.I clenched my fists. *No. They wouldn’t have them. *Ethan was next to me, his shoulders stiff. “Now, if what you’re saying is true, time is running out for us. Where do we find Elena?"Callum regarded us, his face impassive. “She doesn’t want anyone to find her.”Selene scoffed. "That’s not an answer. If she knows how to defeat the Order, she has to be found.”Callum exhaled sharply. "You think I haven’t tried? The second Elena knew what the Order was up to, she went into hiding. She cut off all contacts, retraced her steps, and was gone. “If she doesn’t want you to find her, you won’t.”Rhea leaned in, her voice layered with exasperation. "Then why are you here? If you can’t take us to her, what are you worth?Callum met her gaze evenly. “Because I can sh

Chapter 37: The Devil’s BargainRadiating within the chamber, they felt the air become laden with power, embued with something that felt both ancient and malevolent. The torches danced around in the dark and cast shadows that appeared to move under their own power. We were frozen in place, muscles tensed, breaths constricted. At the far end of the room, Elias grinned from his throne-like chair, his fingers interlocked in fun. He had a suffocating presence, felt in his orbit, the aura pressing down on us like a weight, a kind of guilt to make us feel little.I refused to be intimidated.I took a step forward, my voice a knife. "You know who I am. You know why I’m here. So stop wasting our time and speak.”Elias gave a slow, sardonic laugh. "Impatient, aren’t we?" His golden eyes gleamed. “You think you have any power in this room, Jessica Rivera? You’re the one who came into my territory. That makes you mine."Ethan growled beside me. Take her, and I’ll rip you apart.”Elias tilted his

You must erase your own bloodline from time. *My blood ran cold. My breath hitched. My body refused to move.Ethan reacted first, growling low enough to vibrate the stone walls of the chamber. "That’s not a choice. That’s genocide."Elias stayed composed, his face inscrutable. "Call it what you will. But the Order isn’t going to rest until your kids are theirs, Jessica. They will come for them, and when that happens, you won’t be there to save them.” Not forever."I forced myself to breathe. Made myself think beyond the horror tightening my chest. “And what is it, exactly, that you think I should do? Murder my children myself before the Order can get to them? Because you really don’t know who I am, if you think that."Elias sighed and shook his head. "No, Jessica. I doubt if you have the fortitude to do what needs to be done. That’s

Chapter 39: The War We StartThe deal with Elias had the feel of a pact with the devil, but I had no illusions — we needed him. Every second lost was one second closer to the Order tightening its grasp over my children’s fates. I wasn’t going to let that happen. Our escape from the Obsidian Keep was a delicate dance of silence and urgency as we retraced our steps through the corridors. The Order would be searching for us soon, if they aren’t already.Ethan walked inches away from me, tension radiating off him in waves. "This was reckless. Even for you."I exhaled. “You think I don’t know that? His jaw tightened. "Then why agree to it? He’s dangerous."I halted and turned to face him completely. “Because we don’t know enough. We don’t have time to take our time. And because if we wait any longer, the Order wins.”Ethan’s eyes seared into me. “What if Elias betrays us?”I lifted my chin. "Then I’ll kill him myself."Ethan sighed, shaking his head, and there was a beat of silence between

Chapter 40: The Fire We SetAs we rode through the dusky woods, the sharp oats of our horses' hooves crashing into the dirt and the sporadic hoot of an owl punctured the air. The moon was high, pouring pale silver light through the trees, but it did nothing to alleviate the heaviness pressing against my breast. The Origin Chamber. The place where it all began. Where the Order lay down the first attempts at perfecting the wolf, the first abominations that led to the monstrosities we fought now. If we could destroy it, we could cut a major artery in their power. We had one chance, and if we blew it, there would be no second try.”Elias rode next to me, his golden eyes on me with an intensity I didn’t like. He was unreadable, as usual, playing his own game. I didn’t trust him. But I needed him.He smirked. “More like it,” said Jessica, returning to her former self. Planning on how you’re going to survive this?”I didn’t look at him. “Figuring out how not to cut my back.”Elias chuckled.

Chapter 41: No More MercyThe dust still clung to the air, a choking reminder of the havoc we had just barely escaped. The Origin Chamber was gone, crushed below thousands of tons of stone, but the war was not over. At most, we’d just signed our own death warrants. The boy we’d just rescued clung to my side, shaking, his small body quaking, and his golden eyes wide with fright and confusion.“Jessica,” Ethan said, his voice taut but steady. “We need to move. Now.”I looked around at my team — bloodied, exhausted but alive. The enormity of what we had just done weighed on me. We had dealt a heavy blow, but one in doing so had also told the Order that we weren’t simply fleeing anymore. We were fighting back.Elias dusted off his coat, as if not fazed at all. “We’ll call that better than expected,” he said.Ethan whirled on him faster than Elias had even time to move, driving him hard against what was left of a stone pillar.“You watched and didn’t do shit,” Ethan barked, squeezing Elias

Chapter 42: Into the InfernoWind shrieked through the night as we rode grim and hard for the eastern fortress, and the gravity of the coming thing felt like an iron hand kneading my chest. The Order had stripped away so many parts of me. My home. My future. My peace. But they had never taken my kids away from me. And they never would.I gripped the reins, pushing my horse faster. Ethan rode next to me, jaw set with rage, eyes dark with intent.“You’re too quiet,” he said, his voice and the wind competing for sound.I sighed, still looking out over the horizon. "I’m focused."“You’re afraid,” he said, correcting him. “And I know you won’t say it, but I need you to say it.”I tilted my head, my voice crisp. "Why?"“Because if you own something, it can’t own you,” he said. "Fear makes people reckless. It makes them desperate."I clenched my jaw. Each star pulsed rhythmically, casting soft light across the group as they struggled to regain their footing after the fall. The air was thick with an otherworldly energy, making it hard to breathe—not from lack of oxygen, but from the sheer weight of what surrounded them. Jessica stared at the constellations above: one shaped like a wolf, the other like a witch. Between them burned the words **"Unity Is Strength,"** glowing brighter with each passing second. Her hybrid nature surged within her, responding instinctively to the celestial display. “What is this place?” Lucas asked hoarsely, his voice barely audible over the hum of energy resonating through the starfield. “It’s not a place,” Selene murmured, her spectral form flickering faintly. “It’s… a nexus. Chapter 95 – The Edge of Twilight The vast plain stretched endlessly before them, bathed in the golden light of dawn. Yet even as the sun climbed higher, casting long shadows across the land, an unnatural chill seeped into the air—a reminder that peace was fleeting, fragile as glass on the verge of shattering. Jessica stood at the forefront of the group, her children cradled protectively against her chest. Her hybrid nature pulsed faintly beneath her skin, a quiet hum of power that both comforted and unsettled her. She could feel it now—the weight of what she had become, the duality within her that refused to be silenced. It wasn’t just strength or resilience; it was something deeper, older. Something primal. “We should keep moving,” Kade said finally, his voice cutting through the tense silence. His amber eyes scanned the horizon, sharp and unyielding, though there was no mistaking the tension coiled beneath his calm exterior. “Where to?” Lucas asked, his tone edged with frus

The air was crisp and cool, carrying with it the faint scent of earth and dew—a stark contrast to the oppressive weight of the fortress they had left behind. For a moment, the group simply stood there, allowing themselves to breathe without the constant pressure of impending doom looming over their heads. But even in this newfound calm, something felt… off. “This isn’t over,” Selene murmured, breaking the silence. Her spectral form flickered faintly as she scanned the horizon, her gaze sharp and calculating. “It can’t be. Not after everything we’ve been through.” Jessica nodded slowly, her hand instinctively tightening around her children as they stirred slightly in her arms. “You’re right. It’s not over. But maybe… maybe it’s different now.” Kade stepped forward, his wolf retreating beneath his skin but still present, coiled and ready. “Different how?” “I don’t k

It pooled on the floor, spreading outward in unnatural patterns that seemed alive, pulsing faintly as if it were breathing. Whispers began to echo through the chamber, fragmented sentences that slithered into their minds uninvited. “You cannot escape…” “The truth will consume you…”“Surrender…”Jessica’s breath hitched as she clutched her children tighter, their small bodies trembling against hers despite being unconscious. She could feel the weight of those whispers—not just in her ears, but deep in her chest, as though they were trying to claw their way into her soul. Chapter 92 – The Walls Bleed Again The voice hit Jessica like a thunderclap, jolting her to her core. It wasn’t just the sound of her mother’s voice that startled her—it was the clarity, the raw emotion behind it. She sounded as real as if she were standing beside her, her breath warm against her ear. But that was impossible. Her mother had been dead for years. She had mourned her, buried her in her heart alongside Bryan, and carried their memories through every trial since. Yet here she was, speaking to her as though no time had passed at all. “Remember who you are, Jessica. Don’t let them change you.” Her knees buckled, and she stumbled back, clutching her head. Around her, the group froze, their expressions shifting from confusion to alarm as the fortress walls began to bleed once more—crimson rivulets seeping from cracks in the stone, pooling on the floor and spreading outward like tendrils of ivy. There was no ground to catch them, no horizon to anchor their senses—just the endless void stretching in every direction, swallowing light and sound alike. Jessica’s heart pounded wildly as she clutched her children tighter, their small bodies trembling against hers despite their unconscious state. Around her, the others scrambled for footing that didn’t exist, their voices swallowed by the oppressive silence. And then, from the depths of the void, a voice emerged—not a whisper or a shout, but something in between, layered with echoes that seemed to reverberate through time itself. *“You have walked far, hybrids and wolves, witches and specters. But your journey has only scratched the surface of what awaits.”* The words sent chills down Jessica’s spine, each syllable vibrating through her very bones. S
