CHAPTER 43. A Reckoning in Blood

The room was too small, for the rage churning within me.

Bryan simply stood in the doorway, his golden eyes amused as he took in my state, relaxed as though this was just another game. But I wasn’t here to play.

My children whimpered behind me, reaching fruitlessly at my ripped clothes with their small hands. They had no idea what was happening, didn’t realize that the man for whom they had spent their brief lives in chains was standing before them.

I intercept between them and Bryan, as my hand squeezes the hilt of my blade.

“You shouldn’t be here, Jessica,” he said, smooth, quiet, casual. “I’m going to have to kill you now.”

I bared my teeth. “You say that as if you ever had a choice.”

Bryan sighed, and shook his head. “You never did know when to walk away, did you? Always fighting battles you never could win. That’s what I loved about you.”

I snarled. “You don’t know what love is.”

His smirk faded. "You had different thoughts back then.”

Chapter 44: The War We Can’t Escape Smoke still clung to my clothes as I clutched my children, my heart racing as the fortress continued to burn. The night air reeked of ash and blood, the sounds of drones in the mid ringing throughout my head. We had succeeded in this fight—but Bryan had eluded capture. Which meant this was just the beginning. Ethan’s hand cramped on my shoulder, his stare scanning through the trees searching for a response. To our right, Selene and Dorian held their ground, swords in hand, their expressions permanently set. “We have to leave,” Rhea said, the anxiety evident in her voice. She was correct. And the next time, it wouldn’t be with cannon drones. It would be with my kids. I stared down at their chubby cheeks, their lovely eyes, which resembled my son’s, which resembled his. They didn’t notice what was happening. They didn’t find out what was going to happen next. I had attempted to avoid it. But it hasn’t been my time yet. We departed into the night, t

Chapter 45: The Road to RuinThe Shadowfang fortress was quiet before the dawn, the air heavy with the impending doom. Warriors flowed through the hallways like ghosts, sharpening weapons, preparing armor, muttering to one other in low voices. We were marching to war.And I wasn’t going to return empty-handed this time.Bryan was outside, lurking in the wreckage of the Knox Pack, scraping whatever remnant of loyalty he could. He was dangerous, desperate. And desperation had made men reckless.I was standing in the war room, looking down at the map in front of me. The lines of old territories, faded. The broken pieces of my former home.Instead, I had walked away from the Knox Pack, an unwanted mate, humiliated and discarded. Now I was back as the woman who would kill their final Alpha. The sound of Ethan’s voice pulled me from my stupor. “Are you sure about this?”As my fingertips rested on the map, I turned to him. “We don’t have a choice.”He came closer, his eyes searching mine. “T

You had your children. But you just had to come back, didn’t you?”My pulse thundered in my ears as I tightened my fists. “Do you think I would spare you after what you did?”Bryan laughed softly. “Still so dramatic.”Ethan stepped in next to me with his weapon drawn, his whole body vibrating with tension. “You’re stalling.”The golden-eyed figure chuckled, the sound smooth, even amused. “I like him,” he mused. “But he’s wrong. Chapter 102 – The Mirror’s GambitThe void stretched around Jessica, an endless expanse of shadow and starlight where time felt like a distant memory. Her doppelgänger stood before her, golden eyes gleaming with a cruel certainty that made Jessica’s skin crawl. The figure was her in every detail—same dark hair, same hybrid glow in her veins—yet twisted, as if carved from her darkest doubts and sharpened by her deepest fears. The spark within Jessica burned hotter, a warning and a call to action, but it flickered with uncertainty. Could she fight herself and win?“You’re not real,” Jessica said, her voice trembling but defiant. She clenched her fists, golden energy crackling around her hands. “You’re just another trick of the nexus.”The doppelgänger’s smile widened, cold and sharp. “Trick? Oh, Jessica, I’m as real as you are. Every choice you’ve made, every moment you doubted yourself, every fear you buried—I’m the sum of them. And I’m here to finish what you’re too weak to do.”“Eno

The words felt like a promise and a warning, heavy with the weight of choices past and those yet to come. Her hybrid blood thrummed in her veins, resonating with the nexus, but something new stirred within her—a faint, unfamiliar spark that made her skin prickle.“Are we just gonna stand here gawking?” Lucas muttered, his voice sharp but unsteady.
