Chapter two

My eyes water as the fire spreads; I gasp and puff, trying to focus my eyes on the chaos in front of me.

The road is not so full of people, so there is no one really here to help, and the passerby just takes out their phone to video.

A groan leaves my throat as I push my body up into a sitting position and then drag myself fully up.

I stagger to the burning car; smoke emits, wafting through my nose down my throat.

I crackle through a cough, my breath hangs as I palm my nose in an attempt to stop the smoke from going deeper into my lungs.

The car is shut; the airbag bursted as the man behind the wheel slumps over it, hot crimson liquid dropping over his forehead.

“Sir, sir, are you okay?” I cough out, banging the door.

He raises his head slightly, turning around to face me before groaning.

“I can’t feel my legs,” he croaks out before slumping back, losing consciousness again.

I wiggle the handle, but it’s locked. The smoke coming from the front of the car increases, and I know the time I have is short.

I have to get him out, or he will burn in there.

Pushing my body back, I jab my fist into the window screen.

Pain shoots through my system, causing a loud cry to emit from the back of my throat.

Yet I don't give up; I can’t give up.

I have to save him.

Going at it again, this time I expect the pain as I jab my elbow on the window screen over and over again.

Red liquid trickles down my hand, the pain blinding, yet I can't stop.

I grit my teeth in a hard clench as I try once more; this time the window yields, cracking into different shards.

After it crumbles to pieces, I stretch my arm into the car.

The car is hot, so hot that sweat breaks out of my skin combined with the pain from the shards sticking into my skin.

I click the lock, causing the car to unlock.

With a sigh of relief, I yank the car door open.

His heavy body falls sideways with him, but I am quick to catch his body.

I almost drag him out of the car, his body following smoothly.

Someone rushes to me and helps me drag the man out of the car completely.

We are barely away from the car when it explodes, sending us flying to the floor.

My ears ring as my head aches, tears rushing down my cheeks.

More people gather around, helping us to our feet as someone calls an ambulance.

*

My feet pace through the hall as I stomp from one place to another, trying all my best not to cry.

After we were helped up, the ambulance arrived and took us there.

I refused to be admitted knowing fully well I can't afford the bills, and my family would rather watch me die than help foot it out.

So here I am pacing the hall with a pounding headache and dried blood all over my arms.

The hospital walls are painted in white with white blinding light that makes my case worse while chairs are lined up by the side.

The man was immediately rushed in for some treatment, and I am stomping about waiting for the doctor for any news.

I know I shouldn't be this worried as I don't even know the man, but I can't help it.

I am too caring, and besides, there is a nagging feeling in my chest that keeps telling me to wait behind.

None of his family has been reached, but I have no doubt that they will be called soon.

The door to his ward flings open; I leap towards the doctor, who is in white scrubs.

“Doctor, how is he?” I ask, almost holding the scrub the doctor is putting on.

“First I need to know your relationship with him,” he says, his face so straight.

Shit!!!

I didn’t think of that, but before I could stop myself, the words came tumbling out, “I am his girlfriend.”

“Alright, in that case. He has lost a lot of blood and needs blood as soon as possible,” he states, clasping his palms together.

“I can donate for him; it’s no biggie.” I quickly say without thinking.

I don't know this man, but I can't help myself when making decisions.

I just want him to be safe.

“When was the last time you saw your period?” he asks.

“Um, about three weeks ago. Is that going to be a problem?” I ask, tears brimming in my eyes.

“No, ma'am, I just need to know if you are fit to donate. What is your blood group?” He questions, taking notes in his pad.

“Um, I actually don't know about that.” I stutter, fiddling with my fingers.

“Alright, we will run some tests to find out if you are fit to donate. Come with me, please,” he directs, turning around.

I follow him like a lost puppy as he leads me to another room where some tests are run, and luckily our blood matches.

I went back to the waiting room after donating some blood for him.

My eyes flutter open, a ringing sound goes through my brain, causing a groan to leave my throat.

I rise up from the bench. Turns out I fell asleep after giving some blood.

My eyes scan the place; it’s still buzzing with people.

The usual hospital smell hits my nose. I take in a deep breath, loving the smell.

I love the way hospitals smell; yeah, I am weird like that.

I used to hate it, but now I don’t.

I rise to my feet, stopping the incoming nurse so I can ask the man.

“Excuse me, please, how is the man who I brought in doing?” I ask, hopeful to hear some good news.

“Oh, that room. His family already came and took him.” She drops the bomb, causing me to stumble back a little.

“What!! How long was I out?” I ask.

“It's four pm now,” she says, then turns and walks away.

Holy crap!!

He left. I don't know why that hurts, but it does.

He is gone, and I never even got to know his name.

Oh, the guts of this girl. “I am not zoning out; I just decided not to participate in the conversation. Can't I be quiet in peace?” I lie through my teeth.
