The golden sun in the sky dazzled and blurred Nicole's sight as she stepped out of the prison gate. She placed a hand on her forehead, shielding her eyes from the scorching rays, as she waited for her vision to adjust to the bright sunlight.
She had been locked up for two long years, and now she was free. This was the first time in all that time that she had seen such bright light.
Despite the pain she had endured in prison, she had no regrets. Her five-year sentence had been unexpectedly cut short. Thanks to the new president, who had announced the release of all female inmates who were not guilty of murder, Nicole found herself among the lucky few set free.
Nicole took a moment to survey her surroundings, the fresh air and the sight of the world outside the prison filling her with a sense of relief. Her mind wandered to her husband, Abel Copper, and a soft smile spread across her face. She couldn't wait to surprise him with her unexpected release.
"Just a few minutes, baby, and I'll be home," she whispered to herself, though her voice was weak from months of neglect.
Life in prison had changed her. She looked frail and malnourished. But none of that bothered her. She had endured the suffering for Abel, and now she was free. Soon, she would be in his arms again.
A taxi pulled up beside her and stopped.
"Need a ride?" the driver asked.
"Yeah, Mallory Avenue," she replied.
"Hop in," the lanky man in the front seat said, waiting for her to get in before he drove off.
Minutes later, the car pulled up in front of Skylar Villa, Abel’s home. Nicole paid the fare and stepped out, her heart racing with excitement. She never thought she’d be back here so soon.
As she opened the front gate and stepped into the living room, her gaze fell on Abel. He stood tall and composed, dressed in his signature luxurious suit, as though nothing had changed. He was about to head out.
Abel Copper, the renowned CEO of Abcop Conglomerate, had always been the picture of perfection. Hot, handsome, and unshakably composed. Nicole had missed him desperately. When he looked up and saw her, his eyes met hers with a cool, detached gaze.
"Nicole, you're home," he said, his gray eyes scanning her disheveled appearance without a flicker of surprise or warmth.
His frosty demeanor made her stomach flutter with both excitement and unease. She had always been unable to decipher his emotions. His presence filled the room with an air of coldness that sent chills down her spine. She couldn’t stop looking at him—his chiseled features, his lips... how sweet they would taste, she imagined.
"Abel, are you already going out?" she managed to ask, forcing a smile.
Abel, noticing the faint disappointment on her face, didn’t seem to care. His thoughts were elsewhere. He reached for a pile of papers neatly stacked on the table.
"Yes, I was planning to visit you at the prison," he said, adjusting his tie as though the conversation were of little consequence.
"You wanted to visit me at the prison today?" Nicole couldn’t believe her ears. Abel was dressed and ready to visit her—this was the first time since she’d been locked away that he’d even considered it. A flicker of hope stirred in her chest.
Since her incarceration two years ago, he had never once made the effort to visit. Her heart softened at the thought. Could it be that he finally cared? Maybe her sacrifices hadn’t been in vain.
"Look, Nicole, there’s something important I need to discuss with you," Abel continued, completely unfazed by her emotional reaction. "I wanted to see you before heading to the office, but since you’re here, let’s get this over with."
He handed her the papers he’d been holding. "It’s a divorce statement. I’ve already signed it. You can sign yours and we’ll have it finalized by next month."
The words hit Nicole like an avalanche, brutal and devastating. She took the papers from him, her hand shaking as she stared at the document. It was a divorce statement.
Her world seemed to tilt as she struggled to keep her balance. She staggered backward, her back pressed against the wall for support. A sharp pain struck her chest as the reality of the situation sank in.
Clutching her heart, she looked down at the paper, her eyes drawn to the spot where Abel's name was neatly written. Tears blurred her vision, and her breath became shallow.
Her heart raced as the devastating truth became clear. All the sacrifices she had made—everything she had endured in prison for him—meant nothing to Abel.
How could he do this? How could he end their marriage so easily? Her mind raced back to the horrors of the past two years, to the torment she had suffered in prison for his sake.
In prison, Nicole had been beaten and bullied by a group of female inmates. There had been one night when she was forced to sleep on the cold marble floor while rain poured down from above. The women had shown no mercy—one of them even took her blanket and poured urine on her.
Nicole had contracted pneumonia as a result and was still suffering from it.
Her waist had been injured by one of the inmates during a brutal beating. That was the day they had taken her food away and forced her to go without for days. When she tried to fight back in hunger, they had beaten her viciously, striking her with a chair. Since then, she had been plagued by severe pain in her waist, unable to bend without agony.
The scars on her back were a constant reminder of her suffering—the sacrifices she had made for Abel. But what did she receive in return?
A divorce statement.
Nicole had always hoped that her journey to prison would bring her the love she sought from Abel, but that was not the case.As she stared at him, tears flooded her eyes. Abel stood before her, his face as immaculate as ever, his features cold and unfeeling. A chilling aura surrounded him, sending an icy shiver down her spine. He saw the tears but felt no remorse. His eyes only darkened, becoming more indifferent."Please, Abel, can we not get divorced?" Nicole begged, her voice trembling. She dropped to her knees, grabbing the fabric of his tuxedo in desperation. "Please don't do this to me. I beg you. I still want to be your wife, even if you don't want me."Her pleading only fueled his anger. He lifted his leg and kicked her to the ground, watching with disdain as she fell."You’re just a gold digger," Abel sneered. "You would stay married to me even if I didn’t love you—just for my money."Nicole’s heart shattered. She had hoped for more—for love, for understanding—but all he saw
"I am back at Mallory"What! Aren't you supposed to come back in a month?" Abel asked and was beaming at the news. So that was it, Riana was coming back and that was why he wanted a divorce and wanted it finalized in a month. Nicole thought."Yeah, but I want to surprise you" "Wait for me at the airport, I will be right there"Quickly, Abel stormed out of the house.Nicole was disheartened. She was crushed and broken. The joy on Abel's face a while ago when answering Riana's call made her realize that she had lost the man she loved. Despite all her efforts, she was not able to win his heart instead all her sacrifices were thrown back at her face. She smiled wryly at her foolishness. Later in the day, Abel came back home with Riana, his hand wrapped around her waist as he led her into the house. Nicole's heart dulled in pain. Abel had never treated her with such love and it hurt her soul. When their eyes met, Abel's face quickly turned to disgust. "She never gets tired, when will
Avery quickly ran to her father's arms and hugged him. It was only in his arms that she melted like butter and sobbed out all the pains she had been holding in since Sebastian picked her up from Abel's residence. She has been the sweetheart of the family an apple of her father's eyes. She fled from home without telling anyone and changed her identity so that no one would find her. Her actions broke her father's heart and right now just like a prodigal daughter, she has come back home to ask for his mercy."Enough of this Princess, it's a good thing that you are home. You came back at the right time." Frederick Clinton said not hiding his disappointment."The company at Mallory Avenue needed help and your brother's hands were full already, so get ready because Sebastian will take you there tomorrow morning, from now on, you will be the new CEO over there," Frederick said. He vowed to punish Avery for her disappearance and this seems to be the best way to start. "Father! How can you s
"Oh, yes, I told him that I was married to an unfit man, who divorced his wife immediately after his first love came back from abroad. Do you think that such a man deserves me?" "Now I have someone more capable, tell me why I should consider your family reputation?"Avery said and wrapped her hands around her brother's waist. This made Abel's heart boil in anger."How dare you insult Abel in that manner? You can insult me for all I care but don't insult him. Look, Nicole, it's not Abel's fault that both of you got divorced. It was me that you should blame, I never knew my presence would cause you any trouble. Please forgive me" Riana explained and looked pitiable and innocent.Riana noticed Sebastian standing beside Avery and became envious."How can a village pumpkin like Nicole who has no roots know Sebastian? How did she meet him? Riana thought. A flick of jealousy Sparks within her."You think I will stoop so low to barter words with you Riana? Come on Seba, let's get out of here
As soon as Avery entered her room, a message popped up on her phone. She took the phone and found a message from Riana. It was Riana's picture with Abel. Abel was sleeping peacefully on the bed and Riana was lying beside him. "Guess what Nicole, Abel, and I just had a good time. As you can see, Abel was sleeping peacefully because of the exhaustion. So sorry you never shared such wonderful memories with him." Avery clenched her phone after reading the message. She was determined not to let Riana's words get to her."Go ahead and eat my leftovers. You can have him, I don't want him anymore" Avery clicked the send button and tossed the phone away. When Riana received the message, she was aggravated. This was not what she wanted from Avery. Three years ago, she had taunted Avery with messages like this and she would call her back to vent her anger. It was the same reason that made Avery accept her proposal. Riana tricked her into believing that she would leave Abel. The truth was
Mr Edward was terrified, no one had ever noticed that the dust-proof and oil-proof had been damaged except Avery. However, he had recently told Mr Frederick to replace the machine and he approved the replacement. Unfortunately, Mr. Edward repaired the machine and had the body changed to look like the modern one."Ms. Clinton, you must be mistaken this is the modern GZPK730H series High-speed Rotary Tablet Press. I just bought it two weeks ago. You can ask your father, he confirmed the payment""This machine is the old model that dates back two decades ago. It is not oil-proof, dust-proof, or noise-proof. So tell me how can this be a modern edition? And how can you buy this old product two weeks ago? Additionally, modern rotary tablet presses often incorporate features like automated monitoring and data acquisition to maintain quality control and optimize production. But I did not see such features in this machine " Avery knitted her brow and folded her arms. Mr Edward began to tr
A sigh of relief came from Anthony. "Sure Ms. Clinton let's go" ****It was already 11 am the next day and Avery was in the boardroom with all the management teams. After a brief greeting and introduction, Avery moved straight to the point and told them why she called the meeting."I called this meeting to tell you my observations within the company and how we can move this organization forward. But first I want to know why everything seems so wrong within this company.? What caused the huge losses this company suffered over the years?"Everyone kept quiet and listened to her complain. Each of them was guilty in one way or the other. It's a matter of time before Avery discovers the bad egg in the company."I will let you know one thing, my vision to revive this company will be nothing without your support, so I need you as well as you need me to move this company forward. I hope we can work together as a team?" Avery asked.Anthony, who was not comfortable in his seat, felt relief.
"I will come over and see him," Avery said."How can that be possible?""I got released two days ago, you don't have to worry now Lucy. I am back and I will care of him myself. Promise me you won't let anyone know about this""I am so happy to hear that Avery, of course, I won't tell anyone," Lucy said and happily ended the call."I will see you tomorrow, Tobias," Avery said and got up from her seat."What about the names""Send them to my email," she said and left the office. At the hospital, Abel was pacing around in the corridor. Nora on the other hand was comforting her husband Godwin who was so worried about his father's illness.“Why do you divorce Nicole? Father is in this condition all because of you. He can't eat or taste anything unless he sees Nicole. Tell me what do we do now” “Take it easy Godwin, don't take it out on Abel. You and I know that Nicole was never a good match for him. Just give Riana a chance, she is a better choice than Nicole.” Nora said and patted his bac
"Please don't be irrational, Axel. Please sit down. Let's talk about this,” Abel pleaded.“Sign the document first,” Axel said, pointing to the table where a copy of the document lay.“Sign it, or I will blow her off.”Abel hesitated but finally took the pen on the table and signed his name on the document.“The document is signed. Hand my girl over,” Abel demanded.Axel shoved Aerial toward her parents and grabbed the document. His gun still pointed at them, he quickly scanned the paper, confirming Abel’s signature. A sinister smile spread across his face. He could hardly believe it—he finally owned the Coppers Group.Facing them again, Axel picked up a small canister from his side and began pouring out its contents. Then, he pulled a lighter from his pocket.“What do you plan to do?” Avery asked, her voice trembling.“Isn't it obvious?” Axel smirked. “I'm going to burn this place down. No one will ever find out what happened.”“Why would you do that? I’ve signed the document!” Abel
Avery went into her room and brought back the laptop. After Abel logged in, he noticed an email among a pool of other messages. It was a contract agreement concerning the shares of his company.“Sign the contract, and you will see your daughter,” the message read.“What’s in the document? Open it, let’s see,” Currie said, noticing her brother’s troubled expression. Abel opened the document and stared at the contents in shock.Avery pulled the laptop toward herself and read the agreement on the screen.“He wants seventy-five percent of your company’s shares?” she exclaimed.“I will do anything to bring Aerial back. That’s my promise,” Abel said firmly. Only Douglas could stoop to such devious means. He was the only one who knew Abel had children with Avery. Was this his revenge for destroying his incriminating videos and letting Jason deal with him?“You can’t do that!” Currie protested. “Let’s involve the police. There’s no way you should give up your company. You worked too hard to g
"I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that he was your son at the time. After he came to my office a few days ago demanding to see me and calling me his Daddy, I had no choice but to investigate the truth," Abel explained."You went to his office? When was that? How did you even know about him?" Avery asked, her face filled with shock. Turning to Abel, she added, "Were you influencing my kids and turning them against me?""You’ve misunderstood," Abel replied calmly. "I didn’t get to see him that day. He was gone before I could come out of my office. A few days later, I ran into him at his school and tried to learn more about his family, but the boy was so smart—he refused to give me any information. That made me think of the strange woman I had been with at the business meeting years ago. Determined to uncover the truth, I discreetly took a sample of his hair for a DNA test."It was only later, when I saw you pick him up, that I realized you are his mother," he continued, stepping closer to Aver
“I can't leave, I need to look around. She might be somewhere nearby, afraid and waiting for me to come,” Avery said, her voice trembling with tears.“It’s already night, and there’s nothing more we can do right now. Let’s trust the authorities to handle this. Come on, let’s get out of here,” Abel said gently.Just then, Abel’s phone rang. He stepped aside to answer it, returning moments later with a small smile. Without a word, he led Avery back home.---At home, Avery’s son, Aaron, approached hesitantly.“Daddy, will you find Aerial?” Aaron asked softly.“Stop calling him that! He’s not your daddy!” Avery snapped, her voice sharper than she intended.Abel’s lips curved into a faint smile. “I’m sorry, Avery, but don’t you think you’re being too harsh on the boy?” He pulled Aaron into his arms and said, “I promise you with my life, I’ll find Aerial.”“Will you stay with us tonight?” Aaron asked, his small voice filled with hope.“Of course, yes,” Abel replied.“No, you won’t!” Avery
Meanwhile, Currie knelt before Avery, her body shaking as she wept bitterly. The shock of the events had hollowed her out, leaving her an empty shell.“Forgive me, sister Nuu,” Currie sobbed. “I never meant for this to happen. It’s my fault. I should never have brought them here.”“What happened to my daughter, Currie? You’re scaring me!” Avery cried, her voice rising in desperation.Through her tears, Currie tried to explain. “She was playing with the other kids a few feet away while Aaron and I were working on a puzzle. Then suddenly, smoke filled the air. Everything turned chaotic."I grabbed Aaron and ran to look for Aerial, but I couldn’t see anything. The smoke was so thick and black. I pushed forward, calling her name, but the fire broke out before I could reach her."I held onto Aaron tightly, afraid he’d get hurt if I let go. But I was determined to get to Aerial. The crowd shoved me back, everyone panicking and running in different directions."When the fire intensified, I t
Chapter 158“I hope they are mine,” Abel thought to himself. The possibility lifted his mood. For so many years, he had wished to have children of his own, and after what happened between him and Riana, Abel vowed never to marry anyone except Avery—the woman who loved him unconditionally. His mind drifted back to the children. Having a son like Aaron would mean so much to him. And the girl? He smiled. He hadn’t spent much time with the little girl, but her cheerful allure drew him in. She looked so beautiful and adorable, so much like Avery, with leaf-brown hair that resembled his own.Thinking of this, Abel felt a little bubble of hope swelling within him. He prayed earnestly that they would be his.“Are they mine, Avery? Please tell me. I really want to know,” he asked, his eyes searching hers for an answer. Before Avery could utter a word, his phone rang.Abel ignored it, but when the ringing persisted, he quickly switched it off and turned his attention back to Avery. At that same
Chapter 157“Who is the boy’s father, and how did you know the little boy?” Abel asked.“Take a look at this,” Douglas said, shoving his phone into Abel’s hands.Abel stared at the video playing before his eyes, his heart pounding. His legs wobbled, and his hands became clammy. Before the video could end, Abel clenched the phone tightly and strode toward the exit.“Wait! What about the collaboration? And where are you going with my phone?” Douglas shouted, but Abel was already gone.Outside the VIP room, Abel turned to Jason, who was waiting in the corridor.“Keep that old fool in check and make sure he deletes all the videos,” Abel ordered.“Which video?” Jason asked in confusion.“The old fool has a video of Avery and me... making out.”Jason knitted his brows together, his expression shocked.“Don’t spare him. Crush him into pieces and ensure every copy of the video is erased.”“You can count on me,”---At the hospital, Avery had just stepped out of the operating theater and was h
Twenty minutes later, Abel arrived at the Greenville Hotel. As he walked into the restaurant, he spotted Mr. Douglas seated at the far end of the room, near the window. Without hesitation, Abel strode toward the older man and grabbed him by the neck."Mr. Copper, what are you doing?" Douglas gasped, his voice trembling.Abel ignored him and dragged him toward the VIP room upstairs. As soon as they entered, Abel shoved Douglas onto the couch."What was that nonsense you sent me earlier?" Abel demanded.Douglas was speechless. The last time he had tried his luck with Abel, things hadn't ended well. Now, he had another opportunity to make a deal, but he knew he had to resort to devious means to achieve his goal. After Abel caught him with Riana, Douglas had been certain approaching Abel again would be a death sentence. However, when his contact called a few months ago and informed him about Avery's return to Mallory Avenue, Douglas began plotting how to use her to get close to Abel. Then
Currie's heart skipped a beat. How could these children think she was hiding something from them? Last night, when she had asked Avery about the kids’ father, Avery had been hesitant to answer. And now, Aaron and Aerial thought she knew who their father was. Currie thought for a moment, lowered her voice, and said softly,"Do you want my brother to be your daddy?"Her eyes stayed fixed on the kids, searching their expressions.Aerial's eyes lit up, excitement shining in her face."Of course, I want him to be our daddy!" Aerial exclaimed. "He would protect us, right?"Aaron, calmer than his sister, nodded and asked, "Will you help us?"Sometimes, Aerial wondered how her brother managed to stay so composed no matter what.Currie hesitated briefly before offering a compromise."Why don't we go to the park first? We'll talk about this later.""Are you going to buy us ice cream?" Aerial asked eagerly."Of course, I will.""But Mom says it's not good to eat too much sugar.""I haven’t had an
