Chapter 9

The chirping of the birds woke me up, a yawn escaping my lips as I stretched, savoring the quiet morning. But the calm was quickly replaced by a jolt of anxiety when I noticed the empty spot beside me where Mackenzie should have been. Where was she? My heart skipped a beat as I glanced around, suddenly alert.

I pushed the sheets away and hurried out of bed, the lingering sleepiness vanishing as concern took over. Descending the stairs, I strained to hear any sounds. Relief washed over me as I approached the kitchen and spotted Mackenzie, her small figure standing by the counter.
