SEVEN YEARS AGO
Natasha looked up into the dark clouds with her brows furrowed. “Hey guys,” she called out to her friends, Paul and Alyssa, who were standing behind her. She turned slightly. “I think rain is about to fall.”
Paul took a glance at the sky. “No kidding,” he said, holding on tightly to the shopping bags he had in his hand. “We should start heading home, don’t you think?”
“I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it home on time,” Natasha said. “Paul, your house is the closest. We should just crash there for a while. Is that okay?”
Paul shrugged his shoulders. “Of course.”
“Guys,” Alyssa called as a drop of rain landed on her. “It’s drizzling, already,” she said. “Let’s get going before the rain starts falling heavily.”
The sound of rumbling thunder cut across the atmosphere and Natasha jumped, her hand instinctively reaching out to hold Paul's in fear. As soon as the thunder struck, the rain poured down heavily.
“Too late!” Natasha yelled in in order to be heard above the sounds of the rain.
“Come on guys!” Paul yelled, tugging on Natasha’s hand. “My house is just around the corner! Let’s cross the road.”
The three of them crossed the road together, the rain soaking up their clothes. By the time they got to the other side of the road, they were shivering and trembling from cold.
They turn to leave but Natasha halted, tugging her hands away from Paul’s. She squinted to see if she could see clearly. And she sure could. The sight of a guy sitting in a bench with his head bent under the rain and not making any move to leave caught her attention.
Paul stopped, turning to stare at her with confusion written all over his face. “Natasha!” he yelled above the deafening sound of the rain. “What are you waiting for? Let’s go!”
“You guys can go ahead,” she replied, her eyes still glued to the guy who looked like he was in pain. “I’ll be with you in a minute.”
“Are you silly?!” Alyssa yelled. “Come on let’s go.”
Natasha’s eyes snapped towards them. “Don’t worry guys. I’ll be right behind you.” They stared at her for a while, shrugged and ran towards Paul’s house, leaving her behind. As soon as they were gone she started to walk towards the guy.
The rain was pouring down hard and she walked as fast as she could. His head was still bent even when she finally reached him. He didn’t seem to be aware that someone was standing by him.
She slid into the bench beside him and he jerked his head up.
“Hi,” she greeted, her voice raised a little bit.
He stared at her, his face squeezed into a frown.
“It’s raining,” she said. “Shouldn’t you be under a shelter instead of the rain?”
He stared at her silently for a moment, then asked, “What about you?”
“What?”
“Shouldn’t you be under a shelter?” he threw her question back at her. They were both speaking loudly, needing to be heard above the rain.
“I was going to crash in a friend’s house,” Natasha replied. “But I saw you sitting here and I couldn’t just leave. Don’t you have a home to go?”
“I do,” he said, looking away. “But I don’t want to.”
“Why not?”
“Because!” he yelled angrily. “My girlfriend is there waiting for me! She is fucking pregnant! And she is expecting me to get married to her!”
“Don’t you want to get married to her?” Natasha asked cautiously.
“No! I don’t want to get married to her or to anyone! I'm still young!”
“You are like, what? Twenty?” Natasha guessed, crossing her arms together and shivering slightly.
“Yeah.”
“Don’t you love her?”
“I do! But that doesn’t mean I want to get married now! I don’t want to get married now! I don’t want to have babies now!”
“Oh, sorry,” Natasha muttered.
He glanced at her shivering body. “Oh, I’m Malcolm, by the way. Malcolm Grayson. What’s your name?” he asked.
“Well, Malcolm, we will both die of cold or pneumonia if we stay out here for one more minute.”
“Of course. Let’s leave, then. It’s stupid anyway, running away from something I’ll eventually have to face.”
“Yeah, it really is stupid. You know, I like a guy and he doesn’t even like me back,” Natasha told him, smiling sadly.
“How old are you? Twelve?”
“Ha ha ha,” Natasha said, in between shivers. “No…. I’m…..I’m….sixteen,” she stuttered her teeth chattering.
“You are shivering,” Malcolm stated. “We should get you home. I have a car around the corner here. Where do you stay?”
“I’ll just walk to my friend’s house,” Natasha replied, standing to her feet. “He lives right there,” she said, trying to point but feeling too cold to raise her fingers.
“Alright but I’ll still take you in my car. That’s better than leaving you to walk under the rain up to that place. Come on,” he says, standing up and walking away.
Natasha tried to hurry after him but the slippery road, her cold and the rain slowed her down. “Hey, wait up,” she croaked.
Malcolm stopped and turned to stare at her. “Wow, you really are cold.” He walked briskly towards her and scooped her up in bridal style.
“What….. what….what are you doing?” Natasha stuttered.
“Getting you to my car faster,” he replied, walking as fast as he can to the car that was parked at the side of the road.
“Aren’t you….. aren’t you….atcheww!!” Natasha sneezed, the force of the sneeze causing her to hold on to his shirt tightly.
“Sorry.”
“Aren’t you…. Aren’t you cold?”
“I am. I’m just doing a better job at hiding it than you do.”
She rolled her eyes and sneezed again.
When they get to the car, he placed a button on the key holder and the car made a piercing sound that made Natasha wince. He walked over to the other side of the car, opened the door and gently placed her inside.
“Woah,” Natasha said as she sunk into the seat. “Nice leather seats.”
He chuckled, closing the door and moving round the car to get to the driver's seat. He got into the car and closed the door. “Where is your friend's house.”
“The fifth house down the road.”
“That’s not far,” he said and Natasha nodded. They drove in silence for a while. As they were closer to the house, Malcolm said, “You know, I really think you should tell the guy how you feel.”
Natasha shook her head. “Nah, it’s a waste of time. He likes me as a friend only.”
“Well, if you say so but I still stand by what he said,” Malcolm replied, parking by the house. “Here we are. We are at the right place, yeah?”
“Yes. Thanks for dropping me off.”
“No problem. And thanks for coming over to bring me out of my misery,” he said with a small smile.
Natasha turned to open the door.
“Wait,” Malcolm stopped her, putting a hand on her arm. “You haven’t told me your name yet.”
Natasha turned her head towards him. “Natasha,” she replied.
EIGHT YEARS AGO“Hey!” Alyssa burst into the almost empty classroom that contains only a few students. She paused, searching the classroom urgently with her eyes. Her gaze landed on Natasha. She hurried towards Natasha and sat in the space beside her, exclaiming, “You won’t believe who I just saw!”Natasha closes her textbook, took in a deep breath and asked, “Who, Alyssa?”“A really really reaaaallly hot guy!” She said, dragging the last ‘really.’ “I think he is new. If he is not, I would have known about him sooner.”“Of course, you keep tabs on all the hot guys in the school,” Natasha replied, rolling her eyes.“Yeah, duh. If I don’t, who will?”“Another jobless person, perhaps?”Alyssa waved her hands dismissively. “Whatever. Anyway, this guy is so freaking hot. He makes me hyperventilate.”&ld
Natasha stands in front of the wooden table, examining the clothes that was spread out on it. One is a strapless black corporate gown with a jacket while the other is a jean trouser and a crop top. She is clad in her white towel, her hair is wrapped up in an equally white towel and water is slightly dripping on her neck. She bites down on her lips as she tries to pick out what cloth to wear. There is a knock on the door. “Come in,” Natasha says, without looking up, her eyes still strained on the clothes. The door opens and Mina comes in, closing the door behind her. “Hey, Natasha, you asked for me,” she says. Mina is one of the maids but she is treated like family by Natasha and her elder sister, Diane.“Yes. I’m going for an interview and I need to pick what to wear,” she says, looking up at Mina desperately. “Please help me. I'm running late and I’m so damn confused on what cloth to pick!&rdqu
SEVEN YEARS AGOMalcolm opened the door to the house and stepped inside, closing the door behind him. The house was silent and no one was in the living room. Usually, he would meet his girlfriend, Yvette, sitting on the couch in the living room, her legs on the center table while she watched Television. Malcolm let out a smile at the thought. He walked further in the living room. “Honey, I’m home!” He announced as he dropped his suitcase on the table. He glanced around, wondering where his girlfriend was. “Honey?!” He called out again. “Babe?!”A figure appeared at the top of his stairs. He looked up and it turned out to be his mother, Sarah Grayson. She walked downstairs and towards him, her wrinkled face lightened up in a bright smile and her hands spread out. “Hello darling,” she greets warmly, pulling him into a hug.He encircled his arms around her waist. “Mum,” he said as they release each o
Malcolm Grayson walks down the stairs, dressed in a black suit and trousers. He walks towards the dining table where his cook, Evelyn, is setting the table. Upon hearing his footsteps, Evelyn pauses her work, raises her head and sends him a smile. “Good morning, Mr. Grayson,” she greets politely.“Evelyn, good morning. How are you?” Malcolm asks just as politely, drawing out a chair to sit.“Fine. Where are Alex and Alexa?” she asked.“Sleeping. I decided to let them stay at home today. Brian and I will be conducting the interview here today,” Malcolm says to Evelyn and she nods before disappearing into the kitchen.Malcolm begins to eat his food slowly. He begins to think of the fact that this is one of the few times he eats breakfast at home. In fact, he can count on his fingers, the number of days he eats breakfast at home. Usually, by now, he will be on his way to work but he
Natasha forcefully pushed the door open and climbed out of the car, paid the driver, and waved him goodbye. Then, she rushed towards the monstrous gate that secured an equally monstrous house. The man in uniform by the gate assessed her briefly with his eyes before asking, in an extremely rude manner, “what do you want?”“I’m here for the interview,” she said in one breath, her chest heaving. The gateman glanced at her briefly again before opening the gate for her to walk in. She muttered a word of thanks under her breath and quickly walked in into the compound. If this was a normal day for her, she would have waited to admire the beautiful mansion that stood before her, the way the flowers were planted by the sides of the walkway, the statute of the grey lion that served as the fountain. However, this wasn’t a normal day today, Natasha was late for her job interview. So, she rushed towards the doorstep and rang on the doorbell. She waited, her heart in a mouth, for a few minutes befo
SEVEN YEARS AGONatasha slowly opened the door to the classroom and peeked her head through. She sighed in relief when she saw it empty. She pushed it open, walked and quickly closed the door, after which she slid into a chair and brought out a book to read. Reading in empty places was one of the things she enjoyed doing. She never liked reading in the midst of people or in crowded places. Aside from the fact that people gave her weird looks when they saw her reading, she also knew she would never be able to concentrate of she was in the midst of people. As she flipped the pages open from side to side, her mind drifted off to the new guy, Paul. A small smile unconsciously touched her lips as she thought of him. Paul. He was so nice and so sweet and of course, so handsome. This was his fourth day in school and he was fast becoming everyone’s sweetheart. He had a lovely voice and a beautiful smile. And he was sooo kind. Natasha knew him becoming popular in school was probably a red flag
Two hours later and Natasha had finally cleared up the playroom without any help from either Alex or Alexa. Alex tried to help, though, but he was just a little too playful and too small to be of any use. Alexa on her own part chose to sit on the couch and glare hard at Natasha while she worked. After clearing up the last bit of dirt in the playroom, Natasha slumped into the couch and sighs tiredly. She was about to close her eyes and drift off to sleep when she heard a small, high and saucy voice say, “Is that the work you were hired to do?” Her eyes shot open and she sees Alexa standing in front of her, her arms folded. She sad up, rubbing her eyes tiredly. She tried to compose herself and forces out a smile. “Alexa, sweetie, what’s wrong?”“I’m hungry.”“Um, alright, let’s go to the kitchen, then,” she suggested. “Your dad says you have a chef.”“Yes. Her name is Evelyn!” Alex quipped.“I don’t want her food,” Alexa said.“Why not?” Natasha asked. She could feel her frustration bui
Natasha dashes out of the ice cream shop, a frantic look on her face. Her heart was beating so loud and so fast that she could feel the impact on her chest. She just lost two kids to God knows what and God knows who. What was she going to tell Mr. Grayson? ‘Oh, hi, I took your kids for ice cream but they got lost somehow. But don’t worry, I’m sure we will find them.’ He was going to fire her! She couldn’t afford to be fired. This was the only job she actually had a shot at and now, she was about to lose that too because of her fucking carelessness!Natasha frantically walked by the side of the road, her eyes darting around to catch sight of Alexa and Alex. She was quite aware of the look she was being given by the people around her. She didn’t care, and she didn’t even blame them. She was well aware of how she currently looked. Her eyes were wild with distress, worry and fear, and she had pulled on her hair so many times in frustration, it was starting to look like a bird nest.At her
Natasha stood in front of the mirror, her eyebrows furrowed deep in concentration as she stared at her reflection. She was dressed in a tight white mini-dress that stopped right above her knees. Her long black silky hair had been packed into a bun and she had applied slight make-up of powder, eyeliner, lip-liner and lipstick. She looked beautiful and she knew it. So, why wasn’t she confident? Why was she feeling so nervous? Why were her palms sweating? Why were the lower parts of her legs trembling? The knock on her door interrupted her thoughts and she swung around suddenly, turning towards the door. “Who is there?”“Natasha?” Came Malcolm’s voice. “Can I come in?”Natasha glanced around frantically, searching fro anything that needed to be taken out of the way. Seeing nothing, she hollered, “Yes, come in.”The door was pushed open and Malcolm came in, saying, “The kids are waiting for you to get……..” His words died down in his throat as his gaze landed on Natasha. He stared at her,
Malcolm was every definition of agitated. He sat in his office, an anxious and brooding look and his face and despite the air conditioner in the office, he could still feel beads of swear forming down his forehead. He couldn’t believe he had just that. He couldn’t believe he had just….The door to his office opened and his best friend, Brian, sauntered into the room, looking a bit pissed. “Why did you call me so hurriedly?” He asked, in a bland tone, trying not to glare at Malcolm. “What do you want?”Malcolm looked at him in silence for a while. Then, he said slowly, “I did something stupid.”“Not your first time but what did you do this time?”“Sit down,” he answered, gesturing to the chair across him. He watched as his friend sat down with a curious look now on his face. “Did I tell you that I arranged a meeting with the McClains?” McClains was a new yet fast rising Enterprise that Malcolm had hoped to invest in and he had been working on pitching a business idea to them for months
Saturdays were one of Natasha’s worst days as a babysitter, mostly because the kids were usually around and she had to take them out to the park or the beach. She had to watch over them every fucking time and no matter how hard she watched them, they still always managed to get missing. Luckily, she often found them before anyone could do and by anyone, she meant Malcolm or his annoying best friend, Brian. But Natasha knew that this particular Saturday was going to be even more stressful than the other ones, mostly because her annoying elder sister, Diane, had decided that it was a good idea to bring Cameron, Nicole and Mirabella over to hang out with Alex and Alexa. Natasha had protested against it, obviously. She couldn’t be going through the stress of looking after five children. Looking after two was already enough problem for her, imagine looking after five! She couldn’t do it.But somehow, Malcolm had overhead their discussion and agreed that it would be a good idea for Alex and
Natasha knew when Malcolm walked past them into the room. Thankfully, neither of the children noticed, she had made sure of that. But she watched him from the corner of her eyes as he jogged up the stairs, his shoulders slumped in exhaustion.Once Alex and Alexa were down eating, she gathered them and hauled them up to their room to sleep. After bathing them and tucking them into their respective beds, she walked back to the kitchen where she saw Evelyn trying to clear things up. “Hey Evelyn,” she greeted quietly.Evelyn turned around, giving her a tight smile. “Hey….” She answered, turning back to wipe down the cabinets.“Do you need any help?” asked Natasha.“No, I’ve got this,” Evelyn answered, not turning back.“Right.” Natasha leaned into the cabinet. She actually didn’t come downstairs with the intentions of helping Evelyn. She had other things in her mind and was simply looking for the best way to approach the issue. “So…. Mr. Grayson did not have dinner with us in the living r
By the time, Natasha hauled Alex and Alexa up the staircase to change and prepare for dinner, Malcolm had gone into his office, angry but somehow, amused. As she cleaned them up, Natasha wondered how long she had slept to the extent that the twins somehow snuck out and she had no idea until Malcom returned in the evening! As she led them down the stairs to the table, Natasha wondered if Malcolm would ask her to leave. She hoped and silently prayed that he wouldn’t. She made a mental note to go to him and beg to keep her job, damn her pride. As Alex and Alexa sat on the chairs in the dining room, they looked around expectantly. “Where is daddy?” Alex asked, a small frown on his face.Natasha shrugged. “In his office, I think. Why?”“Is he going to eat?” Alexa asked quietly.Natasha paused, her hands freezing mid-air as she tried to pick up the spoons to place in their plates. “I think so,” she said, carefully. “He might eat in his office.”“Is he angry at us?” Alex asked, still frownin
Today was a free day for Alex and Alexa, meaning they had no afternoon lessons, no singing or dancing lessons, no swimming or piano or football practice. It was a free day for them, but a free day for the twins meant a stressful day for Natasha and she had no idea how bad it was about to get. The door was pushed open and they both ran in. “Natasha!” Alex shrieked. The little boy was so fond of her and she was enthralled by him too, with his adorable smile and lovely eyes. Natasha squatted and hugged the both of them. “Hey, sweetheart,” she said as they threw their arms around her neck. Even though she was incompetent and sucked at her job, the kids somehow still adored her. Surely, that was a good thing, right?“Are you hungry?” she asked, as she rose to her feet, holding their hands and leading them to the stairs. “I want to watch television," Alex said, his lower lips pulled into a small adorable pout that could suck any adult in. Not Natasha though. "You can watch television on
Natasha’s schedule as a nanny wasn’t as hectic as she expected it to be. It usually started with her waking up very early to prepare the kids for school. She would follow the driver to drop them off at school and afterwards, she would return home to clean their rooms. Then, she would eat her breakfast and wait for them to return while lurking around the kitchen. Once they returned, she would take them upstairs to get their baths and get changed, have lunch and drop them off at their different afternoon sessions. When it was time, she would go get them and they would have dinner, watch television a while, then, go to bed. That was pretty simple, right? So, why was she still finding it difficult? Why was she losing the kids at every give chance? All she had to do was look away for one second and the moment she looked back, they would no longer be there. It didn’t take long for them to wander off whether they were at home or outside. Why was she finding it hard to wake up early enough to
FLASHBACK – SEVEN YEARS AGO“Hey,” Paul said, stopping in front of Natasha.Natasha glanced up from her books and immediately lowered her gaze on seeing him. “Hi,” she mumbled shyly. She looked back up at him.“How long have you been here?” He whispered, looking around the quiet library. She shrugged. “A while ago. I’m hiding from Alyssa,” she said. Alyssa was her best friend, but there were days she got so intense about certain things that Natasha felt she needed a break from it. Today was one of those days.Paul arched a brow. “Alyssa? Isn’t she your best friend?”“Yeah. Yeah, she is.” Natasha bobbed her as she answered. “I just….. she wants to drag me to this date with some guy and j honestly don’t want to go.”Something in Paul’s eyes darkened. “Did you tell her you had plans?”“Yes, I did. I have plans with you obviously. In supposed to tutor you,” she rambled. “But she said that’s something I can cancel.”His lips quirked up to a smile. “So, you ran away?”She nodded, fighting t
FLASHBACK – SEVEN YEARS AGOMalcolm sat in the waiting room with his girlfriend, her hands enclosed in his. He tried to look okay, to look normal, but he could feel the beads of sweat breaking out on his forehead. He glanced at Yvette and he could se the wide smile on her lips. She was really excited to be pregnant. She kept glancing at him with bright smiles and he had to force himself to smile back at her.She leaned closer to him. “Hey,” she said, “You excited?”“Yeah…. I…. I am.” He hoped she couldn’t feel how sweaty his palm was. He hoped she couldn’t hear how loud his heart was beating against his chest. Was he really ready for this? Was he ready to have children? He still had his whole career going on for him. He needed to concentrate on that. Bu what could he do now? Yvette was excited at the prospects of having a baby and so were his parents. he couldn’t ask her to get rid of it now.“We are going to be amazing parents,” Yvette whispered to him. “Right?”“Right.” He choked ou
