“Aiv! What are you doing out here? It’s raining cats and dogs! I mean seriously? It’s pouring so heavily! For goodness’ sake … Where are the others?” Kevin asked with a worried look on his face.

“They-” I started and glanced at my wrist. His touch made me feel warm and I felt my cheeks burning up. He followed my gaze and realised he had been holding my wrist for too long and he slowly loosened his hold.

“Oh sorry …” he mumbled in his deep voice. So, he knew how to apologize to someone, too? Fascinating. I thought and chuckled.

“Umm … well the others rushed towards the small cottage over there. Uncle George took the jeep so we didn’t know where else to go.” I pointed towards the cottage’s direction and tried to change the topic.

“Yeah I heard. So I rushed here but I couldn’t find anyone. I was about to call Nick but then I spotted you. But what ar

“Mom, what’s starting? What are you talking about?” I asked.“Nothing. Get some rest, dear.” she said, fiddling with her fingers and quickly got out of the room.“Nick, did you hear what mom said?” I asked Nick and he just shrugged and sat near the old wooden window. What’s starting? What was mom so nervous about? I have never seen her like this before.I tried to get up from the bed but a blinding pain ripped through my neck. I fell down on the floor, clutching my neck tightly.“Aiv!” Nick shrieked and sprinted across the floor. “What do you think you’re doing? You’re supposed to rest!” he scolded and gently pulled me up.“Ow!” I screamed in agony. I couldn’t say anything but yell, the pain was just too much. I slowly laid on the bed and decided to keep my hand there because it was somehow easing my pain.“Did I fall d

“Aiv. We … It’s nothing, honey. We were just discussing some stuff. It’s not that important.” mom said and diverted her gaze outside the window. “Mom, if I’m not mistaken, I definitely heard you take my name. And mom, I also heard you tell Kevin not to tell me anything. Wouldn't it be better if you tell me now so I wouldn’t have to find out later?” “It’s nothing like that, Aiv. We will tell you when the time’s correct. But you shouldn’t know of it now. You may get in danger.” Kevin huffed from beside me. He was holding something in his hand, but I couldn’t see it, since his hands are so big it could hide anything that’s placed in his palms. “I agree with him, dear. It’s not the time yet. Let’s end our discussion here.” mom said, leaning against the window and folding her arms across her chest. My mom, she’d always been so assertive. Once she made a decision, we must stick by it. “Does this even make sense? I’m the one who’s supposed to be annoyed here

  • Breathe me back to life   1. That must be him

It’s funny how sometimes you’re strangely convinced to do things you thought you’d never do in life. The moon was like a phantom-silver disc, gleaming up in the lonely sky as I lay there on my bed in my favourite PJ’s, ready to perform my daily ritual i.e. manifesting to meet the person who had once promised to stay by my side forever.I almost drifted off to sleep after tearing up those wandering annoying thoughts when someone barged into my room.“Nicholas James Hayes! What’s wrong with you? I’m trying to sleep here!” I ranted, rolling my eyes at my little brother.“But it’s urgent, Aiv!”“I don’t ca-”“Uncle Brice has invited us over for dinner, we need to go! Hurry up and get ready before mom comes in and drags you there in your Pyjamas.”“What?! Why would they invite us out of the blue? And by the way, didn’t we just meet them lik

My mind was blank, my heart raced a million times per minute, and my legs were frozen on the spot. That’s him. I’m sure it’s him. I need to talk to him!I excused myself and ran after the figure. Meanwhile, the person realizing that I had spotted him and was now running towards him, walked a few steps and disappeared around the corridor near the pool.“Wait!” I shouted after him.“I need to talk to you! You can’t leave like this! Hey!” I was breathless by now. I was all over the place, panting heavily, and barely able to catch my breath.I need to get to him. I need my answers. This is so freaking unfair!I took off my silhouettes and threw them on the floor. Why do girls even prefer wearing heels when they do nothing but give you pain? It doesn’t make sense at all! Without another thought, I rushed after him, but he was gone. He simply turned left into an empty hallway, but he was now out of si

And finally, we reached our destination. The moment I got out of the jeep, a strong sour smell hit my nose, and I almost threw up. But, a soft fresh material covered my nose and I stared back at my mother’s worried eyes. I smiled, a warm cheeky smile, trying to show her I was thankful. Two tall and lean ladies popped their heads out of a door right beside what looked like a storeroom and I quickly recognized them as our childhood neighbours.I quickly greeted my relatives and headed towards my so-called room for a week. All I could think of on my way up the stairs was taking a long warm shower. I tugged the heavy door open by its old iron handle and Bam! The same old dusty smell welcomed me. There was a thicklayer ofdust built up on all the shelves, cobwebs in the corners, and smudges on the windows. A tiny little spider crept up on my ankle and I yelped and banged my head at the cupboard.“Ow, that hurt!”What was

“When things change inside you, things really do change around you”. With that morning thought, I jumped up from my bed, brushed my teeth, “tried” bathing happily, quickly dressed up, and sang my way to the kitchen. My mom who had been baking pancakes dropped the pancakes onto the floor and rushed over to me. I was startled.“Are you okay, Aiv? Did something happen last night? Did you eat anything bad before bed?” she asked worriedly, placing the back of her palm over my forehead. Upon seeing me, my dad who’d been busy spreading butter on the bread, sprung up from the chair and started hyperventilating.“Are you really alright, Aiv? It’s okay. You can tell us. What happened?”I stood there completely awestruck by what was happening in front of me. My parents were literally everywhere, bombarding me with questions that seemed to never end. It was weird, but a tiny part of really loved how they worried ab

The light of dawn seeped into my room making me frown in my sleep.“Close the damn curtain, Nick. I can’t sleep! The sun rays are troubling me!”“Nick!! What are you doing? Close it!!” No response.“I’ll wash all your dishes this morning, I promise. Will you please block the sunlight for me? Pretty please?” I pleaded. Still no response. I was perplexed.“What’s wrong with my brother today?” I thought. He usually comes to my room and opens all the curtain in the morning just so he can somehow manipulate me into washing his dishes for him. He absolutely detests washing dishes and thinks it’s disgusting.I slowly opened my eyes. The sun was bright up in the sky. I looked around to find my brother, but he was nowhere to be found. I heard a familiar sound coming from the left and that’s when everything seeped in. I then realized the position I was in. I got kidnapped.I

“Nick! Cherry! Come over for some snacks!” Mom shouted, grilling the chickens and placing the already prepared ones on the melamine plates. We often served savoury chickens during family picnics. We’d always been a huge fan of mom’s recipe. It’s amazing how she made it so juicy and tender every time. I opened the homemade barbecue sauce and poured it on all of the plates placed on the table.“Smells good!” Nick exclaimed and reached for a plate. “Yum! This is heaven!”Mom grinned and placed a few more chicken on his plate. Cherry took a big bite of the chicken and jumped up and down, clearly loving the chicken and I giggled. Mom handed the rest of the plates to dad and Nana and they ate in peace, reliving their memories together.“I’ll serve myself.” I said and put five pieces of it on my plate. I took a huge bite of the chicken and I could already feel it melting inside my mouth.&ld

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping right by my window. Apart from that, something had been tickling me around my arms. I groaned and opened my eyes slightly to see a baby spider running around my arm. I grunted. I would’ve been menaced by it a couple of days ago. But, I didn’t find it strange and disgusting anymore. I was used to watching it crawl down on its web and wander around our house. It still freaked the hell out of Nick though. He hated how it tickled every time it landed on his arms.I waited till the little spider walked away from my arm and webbed its way down and snuggled back in my bed, holding my blanket closer, and buried my head in my pillow. “Winter is coming.” I chanted in a barely audible mumble. Not the motto used by House Stark though, I thought and stifled a laugh. And then I dozed off again until I heard someone knock softly on my door.“Aiv? Are you up?” Mom silently opened the

It started freezing as the moon shone up above in the sky. I quickly swam towards the deck. I got on my feet and my clothes, including me sneakers, duh, were all soaked up and dripped. I’d completely forgotten I’d worn only a blue jumpsuit and I groaned. I hated this feeling. The feeling of your clothes sticking to your body.“Look at what you’ve done! I’m freaking wet because of you!” I whimpered at him, trying to get away the dress from sticking to my body. It felt so uncomfortable. And the cold breeze blowing didn’t make it any better.Kevin just smirked and wriggled his eyebrows. Ew!!“Seriously?!” I yelled as he pulled himself back on the deck. And I took that moment to push him back into the water.“Hey!” he shrieked.“Gotcha!” I burst out laughing as he splashed back into the water. He quickly swam back up and put his wet arms around me, pulling me near the

“Umm we were out to get some air.” I lied, instantly regretting why I spoke up.“Oooh why would only the two of you leave the party to get some fresh air?” Nick mocked, wriggling his eyebrows. That prick! He’s gonna get it! I rolled my eyes.“Well, we had something to discuss. And it’s definitely none of your business!” I gritted my teeth. The betrayal running fresh on my mind again, making me dizzy all over again.“Hold your horses, Aivy Daivy! No need to get so worked up.” Nick responded, a little scared at my reaction.I shrugged it off and glared at Kevin once more.Dad had a grim look on his face, but he gave me a small smile when he noticed I was looking at him. And mom pressed her lips together, so I simply nodded my head reassuring her that everything was fine.“Nana.” I softly whispered and sat beside her on the bed as she wrapped her arms arou

I rushed toward Nana who now laid still on the cold dirty playground. My heart beat faster than I thought it could ever beat. I was scared. I was panicking really badly. My Nana should be okay. I know she is okay. She has to be okay! I grabbed her shoulders and wrapped my arms around her. “Nana! Nana! Are you alright? Nana!” I yelled, tears brimming on my eyes. Did she fall sick again? She must’ve not come here! I should’ve told Jen to look after her. How could I be so silly and selfish? Kevin hurried and carried Nana back home. I really hope her condition’s not serious. I crossed my fingers and lay by her side when the rest of the family barged in. Kevin must’ve called them, because I definitely didn’t. I was so scared that I forgot to call them. “What happened?” Dad asked worried. “I-I don’t know….” I stammered. I was in no state to speak. My voice was hoarse from all the shouting earlier. But, honestly I didn’t. I really don’t under
