Chapter 24

Time seemed to have stopped as I heard that name; it was like everything had ceased to exist, and it was just me and the strange man. I froze, my senses becoming clearer as the alcohol seemed to have evaporated from my body.

I moved closer to Alex, who was still waltzing drunkenly to the music, unsuspecting. I shook my head and ignored the man, choosing to focus on Alex and hoping the man was just speaking gibberish.

But there was no way he was speaking gibberish. The name was common to a particular occupation, and only people from my past knew me by that name.

“Nixie?” He was about to tap my arms, but Alex grabbed his hands before he could do so, squeezing them tight.

“What is going on here?”

“I think he is just drunk.” I said to Alex, and to the man, I replied. “I am sorry; I don’t know who Nixie is. I may have to report to the authorities if you continue to harass me.”
