Chapter 27

“What are you doing?” Alex barked behind me, and I almost jumped out of my skin as a shiver ran through me, and it was not the good kind.

“Alex!” I yelled, my voice coming out high-pitched due to shock. I tried to gather the documents back into the envelope, but my hands were unsteady and shaky, which only made the job difficult.

“You haven’t answered the question, Ruby; what are you doing here?” He asked again, eyeing the content that had spilled on the floor.

“Yea.” A nervous laugh escaped from me, trying to mask the fear I was feeling. “Would you believe that I stumbled and fell on the stairs, and somehow I managed to find myself here?” I said, plastering a smile on my face, but Alex's stern face was enough to tell me that he wasn’t believing whatever I was saying.
