"Seems like you've got magical cushions in this house," she murmured, attempting to deflect his attention.

"Or maybe an angel came to rescue me at midnight. What do you think?" Kayden's words hung in the air, his gaze lingering on her face.

Eleanor's heart skipped a beat at the unexpected compliment. Did he just call her an angel? For last night... she was... his disguised angel. She couldn't deny the warmth that spread through her at his words, but she pushed aside the conflicting emotions, determined to maintain her composure in the face of his charm.

Before the conversation could drag, they heard Christopher and Max’s voices from the living room. Eleanor took the opportunity to exit the kitchen and Kayden unwillingly followed.

"There he is," Max pointed at Kayden. "How's your injury now?"

"It will be better. Don't bother," Kayden shrugged, his nonchalance belying the underlying tension. "Any word from the police?"
