CHAPTER THIRTY

Carlos’ POV

As soon as I was at least a hundred feet away from her, I released a deep breath.

Facing the other trackers gathered in a circle, I moved my gaze up to the bright orange sky. The light touching everything in the clearing.

Yes, it looked just like this. That day.

The tethers of a memory tugged at the back of my mind, dragging me back to a point of time I didn’t want to remember. My parents took us, me and my little brother, to camp out by the stream. His name was Lucas. Young, that’s what we were. We were just pups, after all.

Lucas and I laid comfortably on the grass. My mother was cooking barbecue on the grill while my father headed out to get us some firewood for the night.

Our lives were simple. We lived a life on the run. But at least, we had something pack members could only dream of—freedom.

And at least we’re together. That’s all that mattered.

Lucas got up and suddenly poked me on the ribs, giggling.

“Oh, yeah? How you like that?” I poked him on the

I was wondering, is Carlos’ mother alive? Since she abandoned them, she might have found a safe place to live. And what happened to his brother? Is he still alive? If so, where is he?
