I grimaced as soon as I heard that bell ring. For some reason, it sounded louder than all the other bells. Maybe because it was broken. Or maybe because it was the bell that meant third period was coming. Also meaning I had to be in the same room as the jackass who had ruined my social life. Either way, I took my time packing my stuff up despite Haylie tapping her foot in mock patience.
"You know," Haylie started. "You can't avoid third period. So why bother making yourself late?" I sighed. "Yeah, I know. But I can avoid him as much as possible this way." She rolled her eyes but still smiled. "Yeah, whatever. Just don't make me late, too." "Fine, let's go," I said as I reluctantly finished packing my things and swung my backpack on my shoulders. As we walked, Haylie was telling me about an awful cheese danish she had baked the other night. She was an awful baker. Just as she was telling me how bad the danish had been, my eyes drifted, and a smile spread across my face once I saw Jacob walking down the hall, smiling in my direction. I immediately ran up to him at full speed, and he wrapped me in a tight embrace, spinning me around and planting a kiss on my lips. "Hey, pretty girl." He smiled as he set me back down but kept his hands on my hips. I smiled back up at him and gazed into his hazel eyes. "Hey, pretty boy." He leaned down and kissed me again. "You still good for me to pick you up at seven?" I nodded, still grinning like an idiot. "Absolutely. I can't wait." He looked up and smiled at Haylie. "Hey, Haylie." She sent a tight, closed-mouthed smile and nodded. For some reason, she wasn't the biggest fan of Jake. It had been a mystery ever since he had asked me out. Jake looked back at me, clearly oblivious to Haylie's attitude, shown by his wide grin. "So, you ready for the trip tomorrow?" "Absolutely!" I grinned, ecstatic about the upcoming trip. "I'm so excited. We're gonna see the Lincoln Memorial, the Holocaust Museum, the Smithsonian, the-" Jake put two hands on my shoulders and laughed. "Leia! Calm down. Save it for the trip." I smiled sheepishly. "Sorry. I'm just so excited!" He laughed again and hugged me, resting his chin on my head. "This is why I love you." I flushed and smiled. As I was looking up at Jake, I saw something move out of my peripheral. I looked over, but all I saw was something dark as it walked around a corner into another hallway. Jake pulled away. "You okay?" He asked, looking at me with curious eyes that hid a small hint of concern. "Yeah, I just thought I saw something." I gave a reassuring smile. Jake smiled and kissed me on the cheek. "I'm gonna go to class. I'll see you later, yeah?" I nodded and smiled. He smiled back and gave me another kiss, and walked off to his next class. I smiled as I watched him leave, and Haylie rolled her eyes. "Alright, let's get you to class. We're gonna be late." I woke from my dreamstate, and we started walking side-by-side towards class, around the same corner that I had looked at before, and down the same hallway. Obviously, it had just been another student going to class. Haylie and I walked to her class first since it left more time until I had to go to my next class, which gave me an extra two minutes. Two minutes meant a lot when it came to me not having to see that jerk. And I took anything I could get. I walked inside the room with Haylie and followed her to her desk, and looked around. "This is a nice view!" Haylie raised her eyebrows and knew full well that the view of the wall was shitty. "Oh really?" I blew my lips, the sound mimicking a horse. "No..." Haylie rolled her eyes and smiled. "You think maybe we should get you to your class?" "Well, I was thinking that maybe I could just hide in the closet in here this period...?" I pushed my bottom lip out, mock begging. "Love you, I really do, but no," she laughed. "You know, you're only giving Zach power over you when you avoid him, right?" I sighed. "I guess. Doesn't make being around him any more pleasant." I picked at a stray cuticle; a bad habit that I had picked up. Painful, too. Haylie offered a sympathetic smile. "Yeah. Oh! You know how much it pisses you off when he doesn't acknowledge you when you try to retort his insults?" I nodded. "Yeah? What about it?" "Well, maybe if you did the same thing, ignoring his remarks and insults, you'd probably make him feel the same way." She shrugged. "Believe me, I've tried it too many times to count." I picked at my cuticle and winced slightly as it peeled up toward the top of my nail. Leia, that had been a stupid move. Now your finger stung. Idiot. "When I try to do that," I continued. "He just always finds a new thing to get under my skin. It pisses me the fuck off." Haylie chewed her cheek in thought. "Well, clearly he feeds off of your irks..." I nodded. She stayed in thought for a little longer. "Yeah, sorry, girl. I got nothing. Just keep trying to ignore it, I guess." I blew my lips again. "Yeah, alright." A couple more students walked in, including two of Zach's friends, Owen and Marcus. Out of my peripheral, I noticed Haylie stiffen up slightly. I looked back over to her, and I furrowed my brows as I scanned her face. "You okay?" Haylie flinched slightly, clearly jumped by the sudden sound of my voice. "Huh? What? Oh, yeah. I'm fine." I quirked a suspicious brow. "You sure? Because you went all tense when -" I stopped, suddenly understanding, and my jaw dropped. Haylie looked at me through the corner of her eye. "What...?" I put my hands on my hips. "What do you mean, 'what'? You know what!" She flushed and looked away. "No, I don't..." I looked between her and the two boys. I saw Owen glance over, but he looked back at Marcus as soon as he saw me look. "Who!?" Haylie glared at me. "Shush!" I gestured, urging her to spill and whisper-shouted. "Who!?" She chewed her cheek, hesitant to tell me before she whispered. "Marcus..." She looked away. My eyes widened. "Really?" I whispered, in utter disbelief. My best friend liked the best friend of the worst person to have ever existed. Crazy. "I'm sorry," she whispered. I looked at her and a frown clouded over my face. "Why are you sorry?" She looked down and fiddled with her fingers. "Because I like Zach's best friend," she said quietly. I gave her a soft smile and hugged her tightly. "Hey, I could care less about who you like. As long as it's not Jake or Zach," I finished with a wink. She smiled. "So you're not mad?" "No! Of course not!" She took an obvious breath of relief. "So," I asked. "How long have you liked him for?" She flushed slightly. "Since the end of last year." My eyes widened. "Wow, really?" She nodded. "And you didn't tell me because you thought I would be mad," I said softly. "Yeah, pretty much." I smiled. "Well, we're best friends. I thought we already established we could tell each other anything and everything." I nudged her playfully. "Yeah, you're right," she giggles and nudged me back. Just then, the warning bell rang. "Shit!" I muttered. I gave Haylie another quick hug before I dashed off and rushed to my class. I darted down the hall, and accidently bumped into another student, knocking them back slightly. "Sorry!" I called over my shoulder as I kept running. I made it in and sat down seconds before the bell rang and took a breath of relief as the teacher stood up to take attendance. She cocked a brow in my direction and faced forward, cleared her throat, and started to take attendance. "I'm going to call your name. When your name is called, say 'here.' Ryan?" "Here." "Lucy?" "Here." "Alex?" "Here." "Leia?" I perked up once I heard my name. "Here." Ms. Sconley continued to call out names. As I doodled across my notebook, I suddenly felt hot breath spread across the back of my neck and shiver, the chill shooting all the way down my spine. "Guess who else is here." A low, drawled voice whispered into my ear. Mother. Fucker. The bell rang, causing me to jump slightly. I narrowed my eyes at the streak that my pencil had made on my paper from the sudden movement and groaned. Marcus raised a brow at my reaction. "Calm down, buddy. Wait till you get home." He held in a snicker. I glared at him. "You know for a fact that's not what that is. I've got Science next period." He furrowed his brow in confusion. "Okay? So, why are we groaning like we just jerked off?" I rolled my eyes and started to pack my things. "Ha, ha ha, you're sooo funny. No. It's because next period is the class I have Roschèr in." Realization formed on Marcus's face. "Ohhh. I see." He smirked and raised a brow. I side-eyed him as I shoved my textbook into my backpack. "What? Why are you looking at me like that?" It took me a second before it dawned on me what he was indicating. "Oh, Marcus! No! Don't even consider that." Marcus raised both eyebrows. "You know," he continued, despite my warning glare. "Based off of what yo
I felt my muscles tense as soon as I heard that voice flow into my ear and felt his breath fan over my neck. I cursed to myself as shivers ran down my spine, and I took a deep breath. I tried not to whip around and punch him in that shit-eating face. "Leave me alone, Zach," I snarled. "Oh, but why?" He taunted. "You didn't seem to want me to leave you alone, oh, how long has it been? Five years ago, did you?" I clenched my fists. He was fucking asking for it at this point. I whipped around and glared at him. "You better shut the fuck up right now before I make you." He widened his eyes in mock fear and puts his hands on his face. "Oh no!" He mocked. "What are you gonna do? Attack me with historical facts?" I narrowed my eyes. "What I'm going to do is punch you in your God damn face." He raised his eyebrows. "Ooh, you have me shaking in my boots. I think you'd cause more damage with your history facts." He leaned forward and whispered in my ear. "Besides, I think the on
I raised my eyebrows as Ms. Sconley stared Leia down. She clearly was not happy about Leia's tantrum. Leia slowly turned away from me and looked back at a pissed-off Ms. Sconley. "Never have I ever expected you to have such an outburst in my class!" Sconley continued. I snickered quietly. "I need a beer to drink to that." Leia dropped her head, and her cheeks turned beet red. "Miss Roschèr, mister Turploy, go to the principals office. Now." I felt my jaw drop, incredulous that I was getting sent. "What did I do!?" Sconley turned her glare to me. "You provoked. Now go." I shoved my stuff into my backpack. "Bloody bitch," I mumbled under my breath. I picked up my backpack carried it out, and walked behind Leia through the door. Unbe-fucking-leivable. I didn't know why I was being sent down for saying something. Leia had had a choice to ignore me. I mean, she had, but I always knew how to get under her skin. At least she was in trouble. I couldn't help but smirk at the thoug
I felt my whole gut sink down. My insides grew cold. My head went light. Jacob frowned. "Isn't that the guy that always shits on you?" I nodded absent-mindedly, but I barely even heard Jake's words. "Yeah..." He looked into my eyes as concern clouded over his own. "Do you want to go?" If there was one thing I could control, it was not letting this douchebag control whether or not I would stay at a fucking hockey game. Regardless if he was playing or not. I just shook my head. "No, it's okay. I'll be fine." He offered a half smile and nodded, facing forward. "So, are those other two guys from our school? Owen and Marcus?" I nodded. "Yeah. They're close friends of Zach's." Jake hummed in acknowledgment. "They going on the trip tomorrow?" "Yeah." He shook his head. "I wish you didn't have to go through the shit they put you through. I don't know why they do it." I tried not to wince. I hoped he never would find out why they did this to me. "Well," I hesitated. "
So far, the score was 3-1, putting us in the lead. The Cobras had the puck and were advancing towards Owen. "Block it, Foley!" I heard coach scream. Almost at the exact same time, the puck was shot towards the goal, and Owen slammed down and blocked the score. "Yeah, Foley!" Coach shouted. Owen grinned and threw a thumbs up as Jayden stole the puck, swinging it to Marcus. I called out to Marcus once he was halfway down the rink, and he swung the puck in my direction, giving me a perfect shot. I intercepted the puck with my stick and skated towards the goal, dodging players and keeping the puck away from their sticks, and passed the puck back to Marcus as soon as I knew he had the ultimate shot, since his was better than mine, and he scored, bringing the score up to 4-1. The crowd cheered, and I fistbumped Marcus. "Yeah, man!" He slapped me on the back as he skated by. A couple of blocks and a score later, halftime rolled around, and the coach called us back into the ben
My alarm blared, and the intro to "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" jolted me awake with a start. Naturally, my fist slammed on the snooze button and sent the blaring noise to a stop, and caused a couple of pieces to break off the clock. Those fucking reflexes. Now I needed a new clock. I groaned and wiped my face before I checked the time; 4:45. Fuck. I heavy sighed and threw my covers off of my body, exposing myself to the early-morning chill. Double fuck. I reached over to grab my blanket, desperate for its warmth, but apparently, I had thrown it on the floor, keeping it out of reach. "I fucking hate mornings," I grumbled to myself, my groggy morning voice a little deeper than usual, as I forced my body to a sitting position and threw my legs off the side of my bed. My feet hit the floor and I sat up to stretch to loosen my muscles. A yawn rose from my lungs as I reluctantly pushed myself up and off my bed. I rubbed my eyes as I ambled over to my dresser to pull out some clothes fo
A yawn forced its way out of my lungs as I rolled my suitcase through the student-packed gym to the name tag table. I scanned the array of name tags, searching down the alphabetical-ordered list of students' names until I found Roschèr. I had downed at least three cups of coffee this morning to try to wake myself up, but sadly, it seemed to have had no effect on me. My eyelids still had dumbells tied to them on a string, weighing them down and making them nearly impossible to keep open. Once I found my name, I peeled the sticker off of its paper and smoothed it onto the front side of my suitcase. "You all set, Leys?" My dad asked as he smiled at me through my phone screen. "Do you need anything before I head out?" Dad had always insisted we do a FaceTime call whenever I would go on a trip. I guess he just wanted to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything and that I would get to my transportation safely. I nodded and gave him what was supposed to be a smile. "Yeah, I'm all good. I d
My entire body stiffened, my muscles tensing at the feeling of his presence, at the feeling of his breath literally cascading down my neck. Fuck. His morning voice was... No, stop it, Leia! I took a deep breath and tried to get my shit together because this guy was not even a foot away from me. So close that his chest was practically brushing up against my back. And I was not going to let him see the effects that he had on my body, despite my conscious wanting to strangle him until the body stopped shaking. Although I was almost fairly certain that he had the idea, based off of the goosebumps that prickled my skin, the hairs that stood on end all along my arms and across the back of my neck, and the way my body shivered from the hot breath he breathed across my neck. And I didn't know if the burning heat in my face was visible, but I prayed to God that it wasn't. It felt like I was wearing three ski jackets and a pair of snow pants in a sauna set to 100° Fahrenheit. I cleare
If you made it this far into Zach and Leia's story, then it is safe to say you have reached the end. I have had so much fun writing this book, and being able to share it with all of you has been such an honor. I am so happy that we finished this together, and I'm so thankful for all of you who got to go with Zach, Leia, and the rest of the BATB family. I would like to add some dedications, as well. To my best friends, Josie and Natalie, you guys supported me through this book and I am forever greatful. I love you both so, so much. My parents, who supported my dreams to work on and finish this book. You two are such important figures in my life, and I am forever thankful for you. And to all of my readers, who kept me going. I love you all so much
I could only stand there as Leia stormed away, in absolute shock as I tried to process what had just happened. Shock that soon developed into frustration. Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. I looked down at what she had slammed into my chest. A helmet. I traced the design with my finger, creating an invisible outline along the lightning bolt on the side. Shit. This had to have cost a fortune for her. I looked up to where Leia had disappeared, and something snapped within me. Before I knew what I was doing, I threw the helmet onto the couch without a second glance before running out the door and into the freezing cold weather. "Leia!" I called out to her retreating form. All she was wearing was a thin long-sleeve top and a skirt with nothing else to cover her bare legs and arms. She had to be freezing to the bone by now.She turned at the sound of her name, but her expression turned colder than the snow beneath my feet once she saw who had called it. She turned back around and continu
It was now December 18th. It had been one month and twenty days since I had broken up with Jacob. Seven weeks and one day since I'd found out he was cheating on me. Fifty days since Zach had beat him up until he was bloody and bruised. Fourteen weekends since my heart had been ripped out of my chest. For a month I had sat in my room, on my bed. It was where I had stayed most of the time. I'd skipped caroling, the baking tradition I shared with my mom, and even most of my family's Christmas shopping and gift-wrapping, my two favorite things about the holidays. I hadn't spoken to Zach since that night. I'd been too mad. Too hurt. No, not hurt. "Hurt" was too small of a word, almost cute sounding. "Aw, did that hurt?" No. It obliterated, demolished, destroyed me. Demoralized, maybe. But no, it didn't hurt me. It didn't "hurt" me at all. Zach had pretended nothing happened. He never talked about it. In fact, he hadn't talked to me at all. Not a single taunt or tease. No pulling my hai
My focus rotated between my phone and Leia as she paced the room while waiting for her asshole of a boyfriend to pick up the Goddamn phone. I had been this close to saying he had been talking to some chick at the party, just to make the situation worse for him. But, I knew that would've hurt Leia more than she needed to be hurt. The click of the line connecting seemed to echo throughout the room, followed by the disgusting sound of Jake's voice. "Hello?" Leia took a deep breath before speaking. "Hey, Jake," she said. Her tone held no warmth, but it wasn't ice cold either. "How are you?" I don't think Leia realized that her phone was on speaker. Unless she knew and wanted me to hear the exchange between the two of them. "I'm alright, just tired. How're you, baby?" I cringed internally. Baby? Give me a fucking break. He was already cringey enough with his sappy bullshit. The nicknames didn't need to be included in the package. "I'm fine." She kept her tone neutral. It wasn't
I woke up the next morning with the worst headache I had ever felt pounding in my temples like a drilling machine. I groaned and sat up, holding my hand to my head. The last thing I remembered was going to the party last night, Zach talking to me and walking away, and... that was it. No snippets of anything from last night, no fragments, nothing. I looked around my surroundings to make sure I wasn't in some other guy's room. Thankfully, I was in my own room. The one that I shared with... Zach. My eyes widened, and I quickly checked myself under the covers. I was still in my skirt and blouse from last night. The only things removed from my body were my shoes. Zach hadn't touched me. Zach Turploy, who had fucked nearly half of the girls at our school and flirted with the rest, had the perfect opportunity to take me. And he hadn't. I sat up slowly, not wanting my head to literally explode from the pressure of my headache, and swung my legs over the side of my bed. I walked over to m
I shouldn't have snapped like that. It's not Leia's fault, and she didn't know anything. She didn't know my history with that scene in that fucking drawing. I sighed and rubbed my face as I walked down the hall, away from the door that I had walked out of after yelling at Leia. The sound of the slamming impact of the door echoed throughout my head as I made my way to the elevator, replaying not only the sound but the events that had happened before. The guilt made me feel like three tons of lead were sitting in my stomach, and it stuck with me as I pressed the button to send the elevator to the first floor and stepped out into the main lobby. I felt a buzz in my pocket and pulled my phone out to see the notification.Marcus: Yo, there's a party in the pool house rn. Get your ass over here. I heavily sighed as I read the text. I really didn't feel like going out. Especially not after what had just happened with Leia. But maybe I needed a distraction, some action, fun. And Marcus
Zach looked up from his dufflebag, pausing his sifting for just long enough to throw me that mother-fucking grin. "My, my," he mused, standing upright and crossing his arms over his chest. "It must be kismet, how we keep bumping into each other like this." I only stood there, dumbfounded and incredulous. "You fucking planned this!"Zach raised a brow. "Oh, you think I planned this? Why the fuck would I plan for us to be in the same room?" I threw my hands up in frustration. "I don't know! How am I supposed to know how your twisted brain works?" He rolled his neck and let out an exaggerated sigh, feigning mock disappointment at not being able to rile me up a bit more. He finally managed to pry his gaze away for a few moments, glancing around at the room as he did. "So, do the councelors always put two people of the opposite gender sharing a room, or should I start feeling flattered?" He asked, turning his gaze towards me, a raised eyebrow, and that fucking grin ghosting his lips. "
This drive was supposed to take over 24 hours. So obviously, we had to stay the night somewhere. Haylie had told me that we were supposed to stop at the Hilton Inn for the night, and then we would drive the last ten hours to the hotel where we were going to stay for the rest of the trip. But we had made up enough time to the point where we could just drive the whole way to the D.C hotel. The TSO had booked one hotel room for every two students. I really hoped I would be roomed with Haylie or Jake. If I was not, I was going to be throwing hands with someone. We still had around thirty minutes left until we got to the hotel, and it couldn't have been any longer. I needed to get off of the bus and as far away from Zach as possible, or else I was literally going to fucking strangle him. He had spent at least fifteen minutes whistling a random tune that he had made up, making the pitches alternate between long and slow and short and fast. It had annoyed the fucking shit out of me. And
*I ran through the woods, panting and gasping for air as beads of sweat formed along my forehead. I pushed my legs as hard as I could, running from something I couldn't name or see.**As I was running, my foot caught on a loose root, and I fell forward. I screamed and braced myself for the impact of my body on the ground, but it never came. I forced myself to open my eyes, confused, and saw the ground just inches below my face. When I looked up, I saw Jake holding me up by my shirt.**"Jake?" I asked, my brows plunging to the center of my forehead. My voice sounded like an echo, like I was in some sort of cave and not in the middle of the woods from the Exorcist.**His face held an expression of deep relief as he pulled me up and wrapped me in his arms. "Leia!" He whispered into my hair. "I've been looking for you everywhere. I've been so worried." His heavy breathing told me he'd been running as well. And his voice was laced with panic.**I matched his embrace, hugging him tightly. B
