Sara was in her normal work routine when Jean Pierre ordered her to go to table 10. To her biggest surprise, Brian Smith was waiting for her there.
“Good night Mr. Smith. Welcome”
“Good night Sara. A pleasure to see you again!”
She was agreeably intimidated to hear him say that last sentence … Come on! Who would not? She felt happy, but almost immediately she began to hesitate.
If neither her parents were pleased to see her born, then why would a complete stranger do it? Not in her best dreams, she had imagined that her presence, sad and ungainly, would be ‘the pleasure’ of someone as ideal and perfect as that man in front of her, looking at her with those bright eyes and that unique, unrepeatable and intimidating smile.
“How can I help you?”
“I love when they ask me that, it gives the feeling that I can ask for anything … the sky is the limit, right?” The blond spoke suggestively while smiling mischievously and receiving the brochure with the menu of the day.
Sara remembered Carlos's words: “Take it easy, the next few weeks, with all the security in the world, it will be you who attends your table”. Before calming down, she turned into a sea of nerves, felt her stomach as if she had a stampede of wild horses inside then, there was a moment of endless and placid silence, in which Brian did not stop looking at her and, although he did it in a very intense way, strangely, she could only feel flattered. She cleared her throat, squeezed so much that, even if she wanted to, she would not utter a half word, so she only smiled slightly, while waiting for her handsome client, who was already looking at the menu, to make your order. Only that Brian had a better idea, he put the menu aside and focused on the person in charge of his table.
“Well Sara, this is the first time you have attended me. I would like you to choose for me. Surprise me.” He was amused by the fact that she was clearly intimidated by his presence. He was arrogant, self-confident, especially of his appearance and he knew it had that effect on most women, although at the moment he was not interested in impressing anyone … in fact, his interest was focused on knowing more about the owner of those big and beautiful brown eyes that looked at him with expectation.
“Quiet, I'm sure you will make a good choice.” Brian had such a captivating and charming smile that for her it was almost a compliment to be the one who received them, although some comments seemed ‘out of place’, but she ignored them and tried to focus on doing your job well.
“Very well, I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
At the blond’s unexpected request, she ran hurriedly to ask Jean Pierre for advice since she had no idea what to recommend. Once everything was ready to serve, she returned to the table.
“Mr. Smith, I hope you like everything—”
“Brian … tell me, Brian.” He interrupted firmly. “The ‘Mr.’ makes me feel almost an old man,” he smiled. “I don’t have guests today; I have to dine alone, unless you want to sit down and accompany me.”
“I can't do that, Mr. Smith,” Sara replied. “I mean, Mr. Brian.” She felt so uncomfortable that she started to say nonsense, which made the blond laugh out loud.
“Better tell me Brian, dryly.” He winked. “Carlos and I have known each other for a long time, we study at the same university. If he gets angry … well, it’s his problem.”
“And mine!” She replied with concern more than anything else. “Sorry, I can’t sit, it’s not correct,” she said in a firm voice.
“I understand. I apologize if I made you feel uncomfortable, it was not my intention.”
“Don't worry, enjoy his dinner.”

Carlos had already realized the special attention Brian had for Sara, it bothered him a lot that he believed he had the right to monopolize his workers for his personal whims, she was an employee at the bar, so she had to attend other tables and other clients … without preferences.
He was furious and, in his peculiar way, he let him know. He arrived at the table, just at the moment, when the chestnut was about to leave.
“Why are you so lonely, Brian? What happened to your lackeys?” He asked at the same time that, without waiting for an invitation, he sat down. Then, looking at Sara, he said:
“Where are you going?”
“I must attend—” She tried to explain to her boss.
“Don’t worry, forget about the rest, remember that Mr. Smith asked to be ‘treated exclusively today’ and … truth be told, every time that ‘he honors us with his distinguished presence’.” He said with the touch of sarcasm that characterized him, but elevated to the n-th potency.
“Ehmm … Yes, sir?” She replied hesitantly when she noticed the tone of voice and emphasis that her boss put in some sentences.
“Of course! Mr. Smith’s generous tip is enough for that and more, right Brian? VIP attention!” His face looked sculpted in stone, it did not denote any expression and his pupils had dilated so much that the blue of his gaze had completely erased. The blond was smiling wryly, he missed this reaction in Carlos, so he just dedicated himself to enjoying his drink. Carlos, who also had a shot of whiskey in his hand, imitated him taking a minute to enjoy his, without removing his dark gaze away from Brian and, sometimes, of Sara. A minute that seemed eternal, but nothing lasts long enough in this life, so at the end of the truce.
“It's a shame you're not the only one. Brian, I know you never realize what's beyond his nose, but most of the customers are usually very generous and, what a strange thing! None of them demands exclusiveness!”
“Very good night Carlos. It is also a pleasure to greet you.” Brian joked who, intentionally, had been quiet, since he knew Carlos well enough to know that he lost his patience, very quickly, when he did not receive attention. But when he saw that he again pointed his weapons at him, he decided to speak. “By the way, Jazmin sends you ‘a great and affectionate greeting’.”
“Don’t abuse your luck Smith!” He spoke in a moderate but clear and forceful voice, avoiding calling the attention of the rest of the clients in the place.
Sara was still in the middle of the discussion, not knowing what to do, just looking around and smiling, as if nothing was happening. She wanted to get out of there, but she was afraid that her boss would hold her back again, so, as a way of getting noticed, she cleared her throat a little, attracting the attention of the gentlemen at the table, before beginning to speak.
“Sorry for the interruption, but I must attend—”
“Go and help Jean Pierre.”
“Immediately.” As she walked away, quickly and conveniently, Brian could not take his eyes off her, he looked at her as if he wanted to capture all the details, without even disturbed at the presence of Carlos, who restrained himself so as not to hit him and remove him from the place.
“Your stupid behavior is already filling my patience! Finish whatever you are doing and go!” He said with anger as he left the table.
Monday, the usual rest day of Mon’tblank. Sara decided to go out and buy some things, so she went to the mall. Yes, a mall. One of those places with which she had dreamed so much … of course, those of her town was not, even remotely, so large, luxurious and flashy, but in the same way, she dreamed every time she observed all those beautiful things displayed in the showcases of each store. Those wonderful places she saw so forbidden for her, and it wasn't that she was allowed to go for a walk in the orphanage, but at least once every quarter, when Mama Rosa was responsible for shopping for food, she always managed to include Sara on the list and take her too, was the only way she could see the world beyond those four walls she called home. The ones that, at the same time, made her feel imprisoned, excluded, segregated. And to think that she was there, and not as
Carlos gave instructions to the staff, reviewed the menu, drinks … everything. He fulfilled his sacred daily routine and finally went to his office. Late at night, Brian Smith appeared at the scene, a very unusual situation since he only visited Mon'tblank during the weekends, so more than one onlooker was attentive, this time he did not request ‘personalized attention’, avoiding having new conflicts with Carlos, so he preferred to keep a ‘low profile’.He ordered something for dinner, accompanied by a glass of good wine, even so, while he dined, his thoughts and, especially, his eyes were more focused on Sara than on his food. When she showed up to attend a table, she already knew about the presence of the blond, although in fact, she was excited for him, she remained as calm as possible, focused on her work. Feeling the intensity of his gaze, she turn
On Tuesday, Sara got up very early, because she had to fulfill her part of the deal, she would live very happy in her small palace in exchange for keeping Carlos's house in perfect order and cleanliness. So, she went there and, as always, made coffee before starting her work.“Good morning, Sara.”Usually, he didn't eat breakfast, just had a cup of coffee while sitting down to review documents or just read the newspaper. At that moment his cell phone rang, but he just looked at the screen and, without answering, put the phone back in its place. Sara was curious that he did not want to answer that call, her curious mind all the options reviewed, from an unknown number to a harassing woman and, of course, the return of Caroline. The call was repeated a second occasion and for the third time, he had no choice but to answer, and although Sa
While Brian worked, in another state, attending to some projects with the architect, Parker Edwards, his new partner, Sara managed to call him and speak to him. Although in the annex she had a telephone extension, she did not dare to use it since Carlos and Brian, they were friends for much long, she feared that he would recognize that number and she would end up betraying herself. The blond's journey lasted longer than he expected, so for the next few weeks, the conversations were constant, fluid, and fun, which strengthened the friendship between them. Since he was an educated, hard-working, charismatic and chivalrous man, he had made Sara feel especially excited about what was happening to him, but at the same time, she was afraid of having hidden part of her life, she was afraid of being rejected, she was so scared that, to calm down, she lived concentrated on her work and her goals.
On Monday morning, Carlos was heading to the bar for routine earnings accounting, on the way he met Sara, who was leaving with a newspaper in hand … that meant that she had started looking for a new place to live.Between them, there was only a small exchange of glances and ‘good morning’, before they both continued on their way. He couldn't help but feel lonely that morning as, even if it was a lazy day, she was always around, making coffee for the two of them, and then discussing the events of the night before. He liked to see her arrive, liked him … although he never admitted it, all those endless conversations in which she always ended up involving him, he appreciated her ease of smiling, even when the world was destroying around her, she could always smile. After several days, Carlos began to understand and accept that he missed her.
Although he had spent most of the previous night awake, Carlos was that morning with a very good disposition and even with, a strange, good sense of humor, but as the afternoon fell, his attitude gradually changed. He wanted to entertain himself by taking care of various things that he had pending, but nothing worked. Annoyed, he returned home, turned off his cell phone so that no one would disturb him, took a couple of drinks lost in thought, and inadvertently, fell asleep sitting on the sofa.He saw himself running, very scared, behind a moving vehicle, trying to stop him … and as much as he screamed, there was so much noise in the street that they couldn't hear him. At some point, he was no longer running, but he was a passenger in the rear seats of the vehicle, he kept yelling at the driver to stop, but nobody seemed to notice him, not even the boy sitting nex
The fact that Jazmin descended from a distinguished and wealthy family had been the perfect excuse for her to never worry about doing anything useful in her life. She had graduated from college but had never exercised her profession, was not involved in the family business, and she didn't care either since her father would inherit it enough that it would never be necessary to work. She was upset and irritated in her room, thinking about her last conversation with Carlos, wanting to be with him … especially, remembering his recent birthday. She was calling him, but he never answered her for what she stopped insisting on.Deep down, she knew that he didn't care if she congratulated him or not, it was clear that there was no love between them, so she finally accepted the divorce process, assuming that always, in one way or another, she would be present in her ex's life … a
Sara realized that Brian's sister was the same woman with whom she had seen Carlos.Jazmin and Brian brothers? She couldn't believe it, although some things were beginning to make sense to her, remembering that the blond had mentioned a woman when he argued with her boss at the bar. She had become so absorbed, organizing her ideas, that she had to react soon and get out of her thoughts if she didn't want everyone to start looking at her strangely. She tried to raise her hand to introduce herself, but assumed, from the way Jazmin looked at her, that the woman had no intention of shaking hands, so she only greeted. In Sara's mind, this phrase was constantly repeated,‘She is Jazmin, my sister and Carlos's wife’But, he had told her she was his ex-wife. Why deny it, she was too bothered by the fact that he had not corrected the error.Or was there nothing
They had been living together for a few months, by far the best stage of their lives and, although all the situations experienced in the past had left many consequences, they put all their efforts to overcome them and move on. Carlos decided to return to practice criminal law regularly, attending to some cases of young people who, like his Parlanchina, had gotten into trouble due to their inexperience, rebellion, lack of support, and/or poor guidance. The chestnut for her part, and with the unconditional support of her boyfriend, carried out the initial phase of her project, to offer accommodation and food to all needy or homeless young people, especially those who, by reaching the age of majority should leave the orphanages. To the latter to train them and help them take off … help them to integrate into the difficult society, the same one from which they had been excluded throughout their growth and t
“Can I ask you something?” Carlos looked at her with a soft smile on his lips and nodded. “Can you kiss me like the other day?” Carlos didn't ask for which day, but from the way Sara caught his lips, he could only remember her just getting out of the bathroom, wrapped in that tiny white towel with little drops of water sliding all over her skin.He couldn't contain himself any longer, the kisses, although deep, had a slow start, but little by little the passion was increasing. He moved away a little, bringing his forehead back to hers, trying to breathe and, above all, to regain his sanity a bit, he knew that Sara was very vulnerable and perhaps it was not the best moment, but when he feel the softness of her lips, remember her sweet taste and breathe in the delicious perfume of her hair, all his skin prickled and drove him crazy to the point of suppressing his thoughts and annulling his rationa
The next morning, Carlos left very early to buy various things he needed and when he returned, without wasting time, he went directly to the annex. Sara was just waking up and although she was feeling a little calmer, she hadn't slept much the night before, so she wasn't in the mood to get out of bed that morning, but hearing noises in the kitchen forced her to get up and go to investigate.“Good morning princess, how are you feeling?”“Good morning.” She answered hesitantly, still half asleep, repeatedly rubbing her eyes to clear her vision, as she was too intrigued to see the amount of bags and things Carlos had brought with him, which he had left on the kitchen island while he organized them and selected one or another pan from the cabinet that was in the corner.Although he had a full set of keys to the place, it was unu
One afternoon, Sara could not bear it any longer, took advantage of a small distraction from Carlos, verified that her documents and some money were in her purse, before leaving the annex without a definite course. She felt drowned within those four walls, she needed to walk, breathe, cry, scream. The image of Alex in that morgue was not erased from her mind, she had very difficult events throughout her life, but this surpassed her and, as much as she sought it, she did not find a way to recover. Alex was always a care and protection provider when she needed him, but as soon as the roles were reversed, she abandoned him, he died alone, maybe he felt betrayed, mocked … that's why he committed suicide. She walked non-stop and without a destination for many minutes … maybe too many, at some point she felt disoriented, the tears and nerves were not very helpful, they did not allow her to concentrate.
After several days, he finally received a call from Officer Ramirez.“I have news of young Alexander Gonzalez, unfortunately, they are not good at all.”The last thing Carlos wanted, the last thing that could go through his mind was having to give Sara bad news, he huffed and closed his eyes while he massaged his temples a little, feeling a strong pressure on his chest, knowing that pain and sadness it was what she least needed at this moment. He continued listening, and while Ramirez spoke, everything was getting worse.“As you well know, the young man had been released after the authorities reviewed several of the cases handled by that commissioner.” He paused almost forcing. “The detail is that … we have a body, unclaimed, in the morgue of a community near Pueblo Soreno, whose characteristics completely coinc
Sara was in the middle of her last week of community work, abide by all the rules, and although she lived convinced that when she obtained her total freedom, she should leave and forget about Carlos, she recognized that between thinking about it and doing it there was a great gulf of difficulty. On several occasions, Carlos approached and tried to resume the conversation from that night, but she made it clear that her decision was already made and flatly rejected any exchange between them, now it was Sara who raised the emotional barrier, but higher and impenetrable than ever.Although at first glance the blue-eyed seemed serene, the truth was that with the passing of the days he had begun to despair and although it was the last week of the service, Sara still had to wait a few more days, until she formally obtained her complete freedom, so he had decided to take advantage of every minute to recover the love o
“Gina, right?”She didn't need any answer, the Frenchman's single glance said it all.Jean Pierre, who knew what was happening at the bar, tried to keep Sara calm and, above all, away from problems. She remained silent, but it was obvious how upset she was. She hated herself for taking so long to decide to enter the bar, so the witch had gone ahead. What the hell am I doing sitting in this corner like a perfect loser? She reproached herself. She came to that place turned into a lioness, but as soon as she learned that she was relegated, she began to feel like a cowardly cat who fears a miserable mouse. How many hours had she invested to look moderately pretty in Carlos's eyes? Even she had worn that dress that a coworker had given her when she first arrived at the Mon'tblank, which she believ
Sara was outside, sitting in front of the garden that divided the main house from the small annex, drinking a coffee, wanting to change her surroundings, breathing fresh air, bored, alone. Thanking for the help she received to regain her freedom, but at the same time feeling so miserable to have no one to talk to. She hated being alone, she missed her mother Rosa, her brother Alex, whom she still couldn't see, although her mother had told her that he was fine, that the authorities were reviewing his case and that he would probably be free very soon.It was Sunday and Jean Pierre arrived at the bar much earlier than usual, to do a pending job. Sara, who had not had any contact with anyone in the Mon'tblank, since that night when she lost her freedom, as soon as she saw him arrive, she ran to greet him and hug him.She couldn't help her heart leaping with excitement when she s
“Do you think it's just that? Of whether or not you went to La Ciudadela? Of your virginity?” He looked at her like he was looking for a million answers in Sara's eyes, in the end, and finding nothing, he just smiled in frustration, gave up on what he was trying to do and walked away again, ready to go.“Carlos, please don’t go!”“I just fired Renata.” He spoke without showing any kind of emotion or feeling in his voice, while Sara was surprised to hear him since she did not imagine him saying goodbye to who for so many years had been his right hand in the bar.“Renata?”“Do you want to know why?” He paused. “Simple, because I can't trust her anymore, I can't trust someone who can sell even her soul for pennies.” Sara reflected immediat
