Kara Baxter drew the lapels of her black jacket together as she anxiously awaited the arrival of her boss, Nico Bernardi. Her heart thumped fast. She was so nervous. A moment longer of this torture, and she feared her heart would jump out of her ribcage.
When she received the letter from the bank this morning, she did not think twice about coming here. Nico Bernardi is her only hope. She had to at least try.
The door to the office swung open, distracting her from her musings.
Kara jumped to her feet when the man she was waiting for arrived. She walked in his direction but was quelled by his stern look.
Kara had to step back.
“M-Mr. Bernardi.” She squeaked.
Perplexed, she watched Nico Bernardi strode in.
He reached his table, sat on the executive chair, leaned forward, and placed his elbows atop the desk, his fingers interlacing each other. He moved so elegantly that Kara was mesmerized.
Then, the signet ring on his right pinky finger caught her attention and her heart started thudding fast.
She bit her lip as she recalled old stories circulating in the hotel when she first applied as a barmaid. It alluded to their boss as the head of a MAFIA family with connections in Italy. It was so hush-hush, but the gossip did not die down.
Suddenly fear crawled through her skin.
Is she doing the right thing?
Her instinct told her to run, but it was the exact time Nico Bernardi pinned her with his brooding gaze. Any thought of fleeing flew out of the window when their eyes met and held.
“What brings you here, Ms. Baxter?” Nico Bernardi broke into her thoughts. He gestured for her to sit on the chair near his table.
Kara nervously clutched the paper in her hands, nearly crumpling it in nervousness.
She drew a shaky breath.
“My apartment is going to be repossessed.”
Kara's voice trembled. The mere thought of her parents' house being seized from her had her in a state of panic.
Nico Bernardi's brows shot upward as if to ask what her house got to do with him.
Kara’s mind scrambled for words. In a very stilted manner, she started to explain.
“....Will you help me? Will you pay my loan? I promise I will pay you back.” She gripped the edge of his desk, only for Nico to flat-out refuse her request.
“No.” He said without batting an eyelash.
“But you helped Megan.” She mentioned the name of a co-worker who approached him with financial problems. Megan was boasting in the lounge, extolling Nico’s kindness. If he can do that to one of his employees, maybe he can do it to two.
“It does not concern you who I help, Ms. Baxter. That is my call, not yours.”
That shut her up.
Nico Bernardi picked a paper from a tray and started browsing through it, ignoring her. It was clear to Kara that he was already dismissing her.
Dejected, Kara’s eyes watered immediately. Every time she thinks about her house being taken away from her, she cannot breathe. Her heart constricts in pain.
That house is the only thing her deceased parents left her.
Kara had never known her mother. She died when she was young.
A year ago, her father died after a week-long stay in the hospital’s ICU. His confinement forced her to mortgage the house. Despite her efforts to maintain her monthly payments, her meager salary as a barmaid could barely cover living expenses.
She pushed back paying until this morning, just when she was about to leave for work, she was shocked to receive a notice of eviction in the mail. The bank has foreclosed on her property.
Taking a deep breath, Kara tried again. She did not believe that Nico Bernardi could be this heartless.
“Mr. Bernardi, please. I do not know anyone who can help me pay the loan except you. I promise I will work hard, I, I.” She looked around her, trying to grope for words that would convince her boss to help her.
“Stop!” Nico Bernardi said sternly.
“What makes you think I will trust you with my money Ms. Baxter? I am a businessman, not a charity institution!” He barked.
Then, he pushed his chair back and strode to the door, his long legs taking him there in no time. He twisted the knob, pushed the door open, and turned to face her.
“I do not think we have anything more to discuss.”
It was clear that Nico Bernardi was throwing her out of his office.
Kara’s shoulders sagged.
Her last remnant of hope was quashed.
Slowly, with her head downcast, she walked to the door.
Nico went back to his desk and sat down. He eyed her dejected figure walking out of his office.
Back when she was trying to plead her case, his eyes flickered. He took in her angelic face tainted with tears, causing the region between his chest twitched. Her face reminded him of someone.
But it was her eyes that got to him. She had the coolest shade of emerald eyes that made you want to sink deep into its depths. And her lips. She had the perfect Cupid's Bow's lips that his lips ached to nibble on.
But Kara Baxter was a forbidden property.
Still, he can try.
“Wait a moment.” Nico’s voice rang out.
Kara was midway through the door. She stopped swiftly when she heard his voice. Hope burgeoned in her chest.
Without turning her head, she waited for him to continue.
“How far are you willing to go to get my help?”
She did not understand what he meant. Their gazes met and locked. Her emerald greens to his black ones.
“What do you mean?”
“Close the door and come here.” Nico invited.
Taking his invitation positively, Kara moved hastily. Following his order, she closed the door and almost ran back to his desk.
Nico noted the change in her demeanor as she happily sat back on the chair she vacated earlier, placing her interlocked hands on her lap. Her transformation was surprisingly fast. He was just not sure how fast she would change her mindset once he laid his offer on the table.
He shook his head from the distracting thoughts. He cleared his throat. Kara’s eyes fixated on him.
“You are a very lovely girl, Kara, and I want you,” Nico told her seriously.
Kara did not think that she heard him correctly. Her gaze locked on him once more and saw the desire in his eyes. She shook her head in disbelief.
In the year she worked in this hotel, she had very few interactions with him. In those few instances, he never gave any indication that he was interested.
Nico saw her brows knitted. Her face became pale. He assumed that she was shocked by his proposition. But he had no intention of taking the offer back. Since he already started it, he might as well push through.
“Tell me, would you be willing to be my mistress? In return, I will pay off your debts and clear your credit score.” Kara’s head throbbed. She was not expecting that Nico would be so blunt.
For a moment, she was tempted. She hesitated at the thought of her boyfriend, David Ford whom she promised her virginity to after they got married.
Kara clutched a hand to her chest to steady her jostling heart. At the same time, she was shaking her head no.
“Y-you know I have a boyfriend.” She stammered.
Nico Bernardi snickered. A wayward lock fell on his forehead, covering his left eye a little, giving him the impression of a roguish pirate.
In truth, Nico Bernardi is a very attractive man. He had intense black eyes that swept many women off their feet. Apart from that, he had a confident aura about him that made him stand out in a crowd. If Kara would be honest, she was not immune to his charms.
“W-why me?”
She could not wrap her head around the idea that he was attracted to her.
He shrugged. “I told you earlier. I am not a charity institution. You want my help. So I am only telling you my terms. Be my mistress, and I will help you.”
Just like what he did with her request, Kara refused his offer.
“No. What makes you think that I will betray David? I love him.”
Nico smiled - a devilish one.
“But can your love help you in your predicament? Think about this, Ms. Baxter. Do not cling to absurd notions. Romantic illusions will not get you the things that you want in life. It will only decapitate you.”
Then he opened a desk drawer and took out a calling card.
“Here is my mobile number. You can reach me here in case you change your mind.”
Kara refused to take the rectangular card he was offering. To her, accepting the card would only mean that she was considering his offer. She did not want to give herself room to change her mind later.
Her decision is final.
“I won’t change my mind.” She said and marched out of his office so fast as if the demon was after her.
While the gap between Nico’s office and her widens, she could not help but curse the man in her head.
How dare he? Kara fumed.
She could not believe how unscrupulous he could be. The gall of him to offer to make her his mistress!
Without thinking, Kara took her phone from her pocket and started calling David's number.
After the proposal she got from her boss, Kara’s nerves were so frayed. She wanted to see David to be able to calm down. No, she would not expose her boss. He and David were friends, and she did not want to put a wedge between them.
But she seriously wanted to see David.
Unfortunately for her, David was not answering her call.
When the elevator arrived at the lobby, Kara got off the building, hailed a cab from the taxi bay, and asked to be sent to David’s apartment, two blocks away.
She could have walked to go there but did not think she could do that, given that her knees were so weak.
In five minutes, she arrived in David’s building, took the elevator, and pressed his floor number.
She stepped out upon reaching his floor, walked a few distance to his unit, and when she arrived, she rang his bell, but no one came to the door.
She rang and rang, but no one answered.
“Where could he be?” Kara said to herself.
She took out her phone and tried calling him again. This time, his phone was off.
She was about to press David’s door once more when the door next to his apartment swung open, and the occupant glared at her.
“Will you quit that? It was obvious nobody was in. Otherwise, they would have answered the door by now.”
Kara was shocked at the hostility of David’s neighbors. Before she closed the door, Kara overheard her saying, “What a nuisance his neighbor and his girls were.” which surprised her.
Deciding to leave, she marched back to the elevator bay.
Kara pressed the down button, impatient to get out of the building after the dressing down she received from David’s neighbor.
When the door opened, shock registered on her face at the startling sight in front of her. Right before her was David with his pants down. A woman’s leg circled his waist while his hand held her exposed bottom.
“What the h*ll!” Kara cried and felt her chest tighten.
She did not know whether to laugh or to cry.
What an absurdity!
While she was trying to keep her virginity intact for him, for their wedding night, her boyfriend was busy b*nging someone behind her back!
There was a look of pure horror in David’s face when he saw her. “Kara! What are you doing here?” Kara almost laughed out loud. If only she was looking at another person, and not at David, her boyfriend - the first serious relationship she had - it would have been comical. He was naked from the waist down. His pants and undie pooled on the floor at his feet. And his eyes looked like they were so ready to pop out of their sockets. It was the sight of his naked butt that held her attention. Her nose twitched in distaste. “Obviously I am here to surprise you. As it turned out, the surprise was on me. I did not expect to catch my boyfriend red-handed.” She said bitterly as something akin to pain pierced her heart. Her words were like a spring board that made David react so strongly. He pushed the woman off of him. Her loud scream of surprise rang around them as she flailed her arms for something to hold on to before there was a loud thud when she hit the floor. For a while,
They were silent for a long time. Kara fidget in her seat. From time to time, she threw copious glances on Mr. Bonacci’s side profile, but that is far as she went. She dared not open her mouth. Earlier, it was her adrenaline talking. She wanted to get away from David so bad and Marco Bonacci was her ticket. Now, in the confines of his car, she was tongue-tied. There was a tense silence in the air, but Kara knew it mostly came from her. “I understand you need my help?” Mr. Bonacci broke into her thoughts. “Mr. Bonacci, I..” Kara stammered, her eyes watering in anxiousness. “Marco. Call me Marco.’ He corrected her. He turned his head around and pinned her with his unwavering gaze which surprised her. He was so naturally accommodating. But Kara did not feel right to call him just by his first name, given the disparity in their statuses. Her mind rejected the idea. That would be too presumptuous. Mr. Bonacci is a man of prestige and high status. He commands respect. “It
Nico was still reeling from the confrontation he had with Kara. After seeing her anger, he did not try to prolong their interaction because he could sense that Kara was uncomfortable around him. She even thought that he would hit her. He did not know where that idea stemmed from, but it saddened him to think that she thinks that low of him to be able to conceive such a notion in her head. Without further delay, he signed her resignation paper and clearance. Then, she was gone. She did not even look back when she closed the door behind her. For a moment he felt a tinge of regret at having to see her go because he was not able to keep his mouth shut. If he had just contented himself with watching her from afar. Maybe, things would have been different. But it was over. There is nothing much he could do about it now. Kara resigned and it may well be the last time he would catch a glimpse of her. He did not think that their paths would cross again in the future. If Kara had her w
Kara Baxter did not know how she ended up here. She did not think for a second that the modeling job she secured earlier this week, the one she perceived as "manna from heaven," would turn out to be a hoax. “Why was I going to be auctioned for a charity event? I never signed up for this! I am going to sue you!” Kara angrily lashed out at Kate despite the mounting panic in her heart. Can’t anyone see that what they were doing is illegal? They lure women with a promise of a lucrative career and high pay, only to be sold to the highest bidder. “You signed the contract dear. Didn’t you read its contents? Besides, all our top models undergo a sort of baptism of fire, and this is yours.” Kate Ash, her recruiter, reminded her. “To become a prostitute?” Kara scoffed. Her face flushed red in anger. Kate looked affronted. “The Night of the Virgins was a charity event. You make it sound ghastly, dear." “A charity event that sells off their models to the highest bidder?” Kara
The moment her eyes landed on her buyer and realized his identity, Kara went ballistic. She did not know how it happened, but Kara was sure she had been grossly manipulated. Nico played her into his hands. Her nostrils flared as the anger she could not define engulfed her. How dare he put her fate into his hands? How dare he pull her like a puppet on a string just because she rejected him?Kara’s rage mounted.“You planned this!” She lashed out at him. Feeling out of her depths. Her control quickly slipped away from her. She swung her arms to hit, but instantly regretted her intent when she felt a stinging pain shoot from her wrists to her arms. “Aw!” She cried. She dropped her arms and doubled over, pulling her wrists close to her chest. Then her knees buckled, and she slumped like a heap on the floor. Nico sat on his haunches and grabbed her arms to inspect. But even in her pain, Kara is consumed with anger. She yelled at him.“Don’t touch me. I hate you.”She verbal
Nico grunted in pain. Kara felt his body went rigid and was afraid of the repercussions of her actions. To save herself from his wrath, she pushed him away and raced through the main door. She opened it, relieved that escape was right at her fingertips. But when she stepped out, a spotlight focused on her. She was momentarily blinded. Kara lifted her hand to protect her eyes. At this time, armed men swarmed around her. She was so shocked. She froze in place. “Don’t come near me.” She warned them. She was surprised when they followed her order. They did not touch her and kept their distance, but they stood in a semi-circle around her, preventing her from going further from the house. She thought it was because they feared her, but who was she deluding? Kara did not need confirmation. A moment later, she felt Nico’s hands on her shoulders. She shuddered when he bent his head, his breath fanning the back of her ears while he spoke in a deadly voice. It was so ful
Bright light passing through the gap between two curtains touched Kara’s face, waking her from deep sleep. She yawned and stretched, feeling a soreness in her arms and legs. While she worked out the kinks, there was a knock on her door. She pulled herself up and put her legs over the edge, her feet reaching the floor. “Come in.” Her voice sounded strange. The door opened, and the maid from last night came in. “Good morning, Ms. Baxter.” She carted a tray inside. The tiny wheels rolled off the solid wood flooring of the room. “Oh, what time is it?” She was surprised that she was bringing in her food. “I thought I had to appear at the breakfast table by seven.” She jumped out of bed, but before she could dash to the bathroom to fix herself and change into something presentable, the maid said something to hold her back. “The boss ordered us to let you sleep in. He said you were tired last night and would not be coming for breakfast.” The maid spoke formally, but the suggestive
Kara felt cold. There is no way Nico Bernardi would lie. Something clicked in her head. Kara could not help but connect the events that happened to her after she met Don Marco Bonacci. Was it possible that he had a hand in her misfortune? Could it be that she was targeting the wrong man? Feeling light-headed as questions swirled in her head, her body swayed. Nico Bernardi held out his hands to support her. “Are you alright?” His concerned voice penetrated her foggy brain. Kara shook her head. “I am fine. Can we leave now?” She choked on a sob. At about the same time, Nico’s silver Rolls-Royce pulled over. Nico Bernardi’s assistant, Bruno Bonetti, got out to assist them, but Nico waved him off. He assisted Kara and joined her after a while. They were silent on the way back. The car turned right and stopped at the parking lot of one of New York’s fine-dine restaurants. “Why are we here? I am tired. I wanted to rest.” Kara asked when Nico Bernardi turned the i

On a remote island in the Far East, a man leisurely reads an article from the spread-out newspaper. It says:‘Hotel Billionaire Nico Bernardi has finally been laid down to rest in a private cemetery in Sicily. His burial was attended by his adoptive father, Don Leo Castiliogne, and friends in the business. ‘It was a sad day not only for the Castiliogne Family but for the business world, having lost such a brilliant businessman who gained traction for the world-class service his businesses offered. Nico Bernardi reinvented the service industry, making it one of the most sought-after professions in the world. ‘His death impacted the industry, and many people are in mourning to date. ‘Meantime, the Castiliogne Conglomerate will hold an emergency meeting to discuss certain management changes particularly since the position of CEO has been left open due to the unfortunate demise of its CEO.’Nico folded the newspaper in front of him and placed it on the side of the rectangular dining
After he heard the doctor declare Kara dead, a shift happened in Nico. His face became blank. He looked to be in a state of shock. “Sir, are you alright?” The doctor’s voice snapped Nico out of his mental breakdown. With a stony expression on his face, Nico kissed and patted Xoey’s head. Then, he handed his child to Frank. “Tell Rebecca to take care of our daughter.” Frank thinks of this as a bad sign. “Don’t act rashly, Nico. Think about Xoey. If something happens to you, too, who will care for your daughter? Her mother is gone. Don’t make her an orphan.” But it seemed as if Frank’s words had no effect on Nico. It comes and goes with the wind. Frank shook his head and took his phone to call his friends, Evan and Bruno. Both are expected to arrive today. ________Nico stepped out of the hospital, lost in his own grief. He felt constricted. He pounded on his chest several times, hoping that the simple act could make him feel alive, but it was no use. When he heard that
“What have you done, you monster!” Nico shouted while he was trying to apply pressure on Kara’s head to keep it from oozing blood. His snot mixed with his tears as he attended to Kara, who lay on the floor unconscious. “Kara, wake up. Please, don’t leave me behind.” Nico choked on the words. The picture it painted in his eyes was so unacceptable.Don Leo’s gun still reeked of smoke. The older man looked stunned. The bruise on his cheek slowly turned purple, but he did not seem to mind. Don Leo looked shocked!Xoey’s cries echoed around them. The child must have sensed that her mother was in danger. Earlier, the baby was silent because Rebecca tried to cushion her little ears with her palms. Speaking of Rebecca, she, too, looked frozen on the spot. She did not think that her father would be capable of gunning a person point-blank. Her jaw dropped in disbelief. In her shell-shocked state, she almost forgot about Xoey, and her hold on the baby slackened. Were it not for Mar
Nico heard the pain in Kara’s voice, but he willed himself not to look at her face, for it would be his undoing. He had things to settle first. There was general silence all around, except for Kara’s muffled sobs. “So, the prodigal son is awake.” Don Leo muttered under his breath. There was no relief nor excitement on his face at the knowledge that Nico surpassed death. For Don Leo, it would be better for everyone if Nico did not wake up. He can take care of the man until his last breath. But this twist forebodes nothing good for him and the Castiliogne family. Nico, getting out of the coma, was going to shake their world, and he wouldn’t let it happen. To him, Nico is better off as dead. For his part, Nico ignored the older man’s barb. He walked deliberately, his movements stiff due to the weakness in his leg, but he continued with his slow pace until he reached Don Leo’s side.Don Leo is a stocky man. Nico towered over him. He looked down on the man who had taken him under
Nico’s eyelids flickered several times like a butterfly wing atop a flower, ready to explore. A short while later, his eyelids fluttered open, showing the dark eyes underneath. He looked around him. The familiar room was empty. After a while, his eyes glittered when he remembered his last ordeal. He thought he would not make it. But he had the best motivation on Earth. He remembered how he literally bit the bullets and braved through the obstacles. He remembered how he got hit. At the remembrance, he searched his body to check his injuries. He had two - one on his leg and one on his arm. He sighed in elation, muttering under his breath a prayer of thanks. It was good to be back. He mumbled to himself. He thought he died on the firing range, but it seemed like fate was giving him a chance. He vowed to use this chance to be with his family. He had endured enough. At the thought of Kara and their baby, Nico pushed his body to sit up, but all his strength had left him.
Don Leo’s men swarmed around them, leaving Kara’s body frozen in fear.Sweat and goosebumps fought for dominance in lining her smooth skin while being driven out of Nico's room. “Wait a minute. We are not doing anything wrong?” She blurted out when Frank and Marco underwent a body check. Marco was unarmed, but Frank had one tuck on the hidden holster on his jacket. The men confiscated the firearm before pushing them to walk the narrow hallway out of Nico's bedroom. Kara’s eyes darted from side to side, noting the unfamiliarity of the place. This was not the way out, she concluded to herself.“Where are you taking us?” She asked once more, thankful that her voice sounded strong, but deep inside, her heart beat fast - so fast that she nearly thought it would jump out of her ribcage. The men remained silent. They did not say a word. The only sound she could hear was the ringing in her ears. Frank, who was walking ahead of her, warned. “Stop talking and just walk.” Two men flank
“What happened to him?” The sound of anguish in Kara’s voice reverberated around the silent room. Gingerly, she walked to the bed and stopped near Nico’s head. She was trembling as she did so. Her eyes never left Nico’s unmoving form on the bed. Nico was breathing. Her eyes flew to his face, studying the changes in them. “He lost weight.” Frank told her everything that happened after Nico disappeared. While Frank talked, Kara sat on the edge of the bed, suddenly feeling like her knees were to give up on her any minute. Her hands trembling, Kara took Nico's free hand carefully and pressed it between hers. She was afraid that her movement might have hurt him. “What happened?” Without letting her eyes drift from Nico's, Kara asked Frank. “He wanted to get out, but the system did not let him. Given his position, it was impossible to allow him to go. He already knew too much. Besides, you only have a one-way ticket to the organization.” “There is no way out.” It was Marco
Kara looked at the Grecian white building in front of her. Her brows furrowed in confusion.“I thought you were going to bring me to Nico? What are we doing here? This looks like a military camp to me.” She told him with a frown. For the first time, Kara regretted her decision to come to Sicily with Marco, and her doubt showed on her face as she watched Marco ducked his head when two men emerged from the structure. The men looked like hired goons. “Lower your head, and do not let them see your face.” Marco hissed. Kara did as she was told. She pressed her body into the cramped space at the back of the delivery truck where Marco pulled her in earlier. Afraid that any act of disobedience would endanger them. By now, she has fully understood that this is a covert territory and no one from the outside is permitted to enter. They were trespassing on private property!Suddenly, she felt for their safety. And fear slowly crept in. What if they were discovered and unable to leave this
