Nico was still reeling from the confrontation he had with Kara. After seeing her anger, he did not try to prolong their interaction because he could sense that Kara was uncomfortable around him.
She even thought that he would hit her. He did not know where that idea stemmed from, but it saddened him to think that she thinks that low of him to be able to conceive such a notion in her head.
Without further delay, he signed her resignation paper and clearance. Then, she was gone. She did not even look back when she closed the door behind her.
For a moment he felt a tinge of regret at having to see her go because he was not able to keep his mouth shut. If he had just contented himself with watching her from afar. Maybe, things would have been different.
But it was over. There is nothing much he could do about it now. Kara resigned and it may well be the last time he would catch a glimpse of her.
He did not think that their paths would cross again in the future. If Kara had her way, he believed she would make sure of that.
Nico sighed.
Maybe it was for the best.
Kara with her emerald green eyes and soft luscious lips would only be a distraction to him. And he can not be distracted right now. He has a mission to accomplish. A woman like Kara would only complicate things for him.
The door to his office opened and his right-hand man, Bruno, poked his head in.
“Is this a good time to talk, Perrochio?”
It was his moniker and only his few close friends get the privilege to call him that.
Nico straightened and summoned Bruno to his office.
Bruno approached his desk, holding a peculiar looking card and offered it to him.
Nico took the rectangular card the size of half of a bond paper and his eyes widened. It was the elusive golden ticket to an underground auction.
He had been trying for months to get ahold of one, but only a few businessmen got that privilege. The organizers were so strict. You have to be an exclusive member to be able to participate in these events.
“How did you get these?” He excitedly asked Bruno who snickered before replying.
“The Club Roman has finally accepted your application to be a member.” Bruno informed him.
Nico sighed. Even with his money and newfound position as the head of the Castiliogne Family, it took him a while to join the exclusive club for the elite. The club accepted its members by invitation only. If no original member invited you, you can not get in.
“How much did you pay for these?” Nico was surprised with Bruno’s cunning. He was impressed that he was able to secure a ticket for the event this weekend.
“A hundred million for the exclusive membership, but it would be all worth it. The end of this week, they are going to hold an auction of virgins. I heard that they expect to fetch billions just for running this event. That’s why it was a very lucrative business for the Bonnacis.” Bruno explained, mentioning the powerful Bonacci family.
In terms of wealth, the Bonacci and the Castiliogne Families are on the same level, but were not involved in the same business, so they have far less to interact with. But they knew each other, and maintained respective distances.
Nico shook his head.
“And the girls that would be auctioned off this weekend, do you have any idea as to their identities. Do you think Rebecca was with them?” He was excited and for a moment he had forgotten about the girl with emerald eyes that had bothered his thoughts earlier.
Bruno shook his head.
“The security was tight. I can not get any advance information about the girls to be auctioned this weekend.”
Nico nodded.
“It’s alright. At least, we can penetrate the last place she turned up before she disappeared last year.”
Bruno nodded.
“Any news about Leo?” He asked again.
At the mention of his adoptive father, Nico’s eyes softened.
“Still in his chateau in Sicily.” Bruno replied swiftly.
He nodded. “The new environment would do him good.” He said. Then as an afterthought, he added,
“Don’t tell him yet about our efforts to find Rebecca. I do not want to keep his hopes up and have it dashed yet again when nothing comes up this weekend.” he instructed.
When Bruno left, Nico became preoccupied with the golden ticket. He reached out to caress the glittery surface, awed by its presence in his hand.
“Rebecca.” He sighed her name in the silence, with only the empty walls of his office around him.
Rebecca was Don Leo Castiliogne’s only daughter. According to Don Leo, when his wife was pregnant with her, she accidentally discovered that he was the head of a MAFIA family. She did not want a life of a “gangster” as she puts it, and opted out. Because Don Leo loved his wife, he gave her what she wanted.
For years, he never bothered them, and left them in peace. But he never abandoned them. Every month, he would put a sizable amount of money in his former wife’s bank account which she promptly refused because she did not want anything to do with a mobster’s money. The money remains untouched through the years.
Don Leo contented himself in the knowledge that they were fine and doing well. But from time to time, he would send people to check on them.
Don Leo’s wife never remarried and has devoted her entire life with his daughter. He knew that with Rebecca missing, she was as devastated as Leo was. Maybe, even more so.
Nico dropped the golden ticket atop his table, and walked to the glass window to his left. He opened it and watched the busy Manhattan street below.
He remembered the day Don Leo found him on the streets begging for food. That time, Don Leo was a very lonely man. He was the head of his own MAFIA family. He is rich and powerful, but he felt empty.
Don Leo took him in, a street urchin, clothed him, fed him and sent him to the best schools.
When Don Leo stepped down a few months ago, it was not so hard to guess that he would pass on the reins of the Castiliogne Family in Nico’s care.
He rose from underboss to mob boss overnight.
He turned around and surveyed his office. The expensive wood desk where his laptop and phone rests together with his car keys. All of these things he accomplished because of Leo Castiliogne. He owes the man so much and the least he could do is to find his missing daughter.
Finding Rebecca would also keep his heart at rest.

Club Roman
The valet opened the passenger door of a silver Rolls-Royce. Nico Bernardi, dressed in an elegant three-piece ensemble, got out followed by Bruno and Evan Peters, another one of his friends. If Bruno is his right-hand-man, Evan is his left-hand-man.
He never leaves without the two.
An executive from the club met them before they were ushered into a narrow hallway.
“The place looks deserted.” Bruno commented and their guide, a tall, blond girl of about 18-years old, nervously glanced at Nico’s profile before explaining.
“The whole place is like a maze, and each hallway will let you arrive in your designated box. This is Club Roman’s way to protect the identities of our guests. You won’t accidentally meet anyone here. The Club Roman operates with utmost confidentiality. We take care of our guests' well-being seriously.” There was so much pride in her voice.
.
Nico, though he appeared to be uninterested, kept his ears strained. It appeared to him that she was absolutely clueless as to Club Roman’s shady deals or she would not be talking like this in their presence.
That or she was a good actress.
But then, her words sank in. It only confirmed his suspicion. The security in this place is very tight. Then, his eyes roamed around until he spotted CCTV cameras all around them.
He looked over his shoulder for Evan and he nodded. His man knew what to do in instances like this.
After a few minutes, they reached their destination. The box designated for him and his entourage was large enough to accommodate twenty people. It has a large buffet table on the far side and its own restroom.
Nico’s eyes gravitated toward the large glass wall which had a full view of the stage. It was still empty, but the lights were on.
He tried to see the occupants of the other boxes, but the glass was heavily tinted. It only meant that no one could guess the identity of the people inside the boxes around the stage.
“When will the bidding start?” He asked their facilitator.
He could not wait to check out the selection, see if the person he was looking for was among them.
His heart beat fast when a bell sounded. Then a voice over permeated the speakers in the room.
“Good evening, distinguished guests. Our show will start in fifteen minutes. For speedy transactions, we assigned a facilitator to address your concerns and to help you process a smooth experience with us. Happy bidding.”
Then a smoke bomb exploded, obscuring his view of the stage. A fast music filtered in the air. The show has begun.
Nico Bernardi gripped the edge of his seat as the first woman to be auctioned that night appeared. She was dressed in very seductive lingerie. She looked confident while strutting around the stage like she very well owned it.
The buzzer sounded and bidders started to key in their tender.
“For one million dollars, going once, going twice and sold!” A horn sounded and the woman hopped happily off the stage.
Another woman came in. This time, she was dressed in a two-piece bikini. Her skin glowed every time she turned and it hit the light. She had feral eyes, but his eyes roamed around her body dispassionately.
“Are you interested in making an offer for her?” Their guide asked.
“Are you interested in making an an offer, Mr. Bernardi?” The facilitator asked.
Nico sipped Campari from the stemless glass Bruno dispensed with earlier and tasted the bitter liquor infused with herbs and fruits.
He looked at his right-hand-man and asked?
“Should I make an offer for her?”
Bruno looked at the woman on display and shook his head.
“She is not your type.” Bruno quipped, dashing their facilitator’s expectant face.
“Let me check the others first.” He said rather evasively. If Rebecca was not here, he would of course, make an effort later to make a bid to negate suspicion.
“My boss prefers dark-haired beauties. Do you have such a lady on your roster tonight?” Bruno added.
Their facilitator’s eyes lit up. “Oh yes, we do.”
Nico’s interest was piqued.
“We also have someone with green eyes and luscious cupid-bow lips.” She shared.
When he heard this, something inside Nico Bernardi flipped.
Was it Rebecca? He thought to himself.
The night came by so fast with Nico not making a bid throughout. He was waiting for someone that closely resembled Rebecca’s description. He was interested in only her.
Then the last woman to be auctioned that night was carted on stage. Unlike the rest of the girls, this one was inside a cage. She looked furious and her green eyes flashed before him.
Nico felt his heart stop.
He could not believe it.
Without waiting for their facilitator to ask him again, he immediately punched an offer. Ten million dollars.
The facilitator’s eyes widened.
Unlike the other girls, the last one got a very high starting bid. Comparatively, the previous girls ended up being bought at one million dollars or a little over it. Nico tendering ten times higher meant that he did not want anyone to compete with him on this one.
Unfortunately, he does not have a say on it. As another bidder made an offer doubling his initial bid.
“Twenty million dollars!” The auctioneer shouted in surprise.
Nico would not be outdone. He needed to have her - by hook or by crook. He does not care about the money.
He punched a counter offer of thirty million. Their facilitator gasped.
Bruno tapped his shoulder, but he ignored the silent reminder. For a while, he and the other bidder go back and forth, topping up the other’s bid. Until finally, Nico won by shedding out a hundred million for this one particular girl.
“Oh my!” Their facilitator looked at him with awe. But he did not care about that. He rose to his feet. Bruno will take care of things for him.
He tried too hard to mask his smile, but when he reached the confines of his car, he let out a long drawn breath.
He got her.
Kara Baxter did not know how she ended up here. She did not think for a second that the modeling job she secured earlier this week, the one she perceived as "manna from heaven," would turn out to be a hoax. “Why was I going to be auctioned for a charity event? I never signed up for this! I am going to sue you!” Kara angrily lashed out at Kate despite the mounting panic in her heart. Can’t anyone see that what they were doing is illegal? They lure women with a promise of a lucrative career and high pay, only to be sold to the highest bidder. “You signed the contract dear. Didn’t you read its contents? Besides, all our top models undergo a sort of baptism of fire, and this is yours.” Kate Ash, her recruiter, reminded her. “To become a prostitute?” Kara scoffed. Her face flushed red in anger. Kate looked affronted. “The Night of the Virgins was a charity event. You make it sound ghastly, dear." “A charity event that sells off their models to the highest bidder?” Kara
The moment her eyes landed on her buyer and realized his identity, Kara went ballistic. She did not know how it happened, but Kara was sure she had been grossly manipulated. Nico played her into his hands. Her nostrils flared as the anger she could not define engulfed her. How dare he put her fate into his hands? How dare he pull her like a puppet on a string just because she rejected him?Kara’s rage mounted.“You planned this!” She lashed out at him. Feeling out of her depths. Her control quickly slipped away from her. She swung her arms to hit, but instantly regretted her intent when she felt a stinging pain shoot from her wrists to her arms. “Aw!” She cried. She dropped her arms and doubled over, pulling her wrists close to her chest. Then her knees buckled, and she slumped like a heap on the floor. Nico sat on his haunches and grabbed her arms to inspect. But even in her pain, Kara is consumed with anger. She yelled at him.“Don’t touch me. I hate you.”She verbal
Nico grunted in pain. Kara felt his body went rigid and was afraid of the repercussions of her actions. To save herself from his wrath, she pushed him away and raced through the main door. She opened it, relieved that escape was right at her fingertips. But when she stepped out, a spotlight focused on her. She was momentarily blinded. Kara lifted her hand to protect her eyes. At this time, armed men swarmed around her. She was so shocked. She froze in place. “Don’t come near me.” She warned them. She was surprised when they followed her order. They did not touch her and kept their distance, but they stood in a semi-circle around her, preventing her from going further from the house. She thought it was because they feared her, but who was she deluding? Kara did not need confirmation. A moment later, she felt Nico’s hands on her shoulders. She shuddered when he bent his head, his breath fanning the back of her ears while he spoke in a deadly voice. It was so ful
Bright light passing through the gap between two curtains touched Kara’s face, waking her from deep sleep. She yawned and stretched, feeling a soreness in her arms and legs. While she worked out the kinks, there was a knock on her door. She pulled herself up and put her legs over the edge, her feet reaching the floor. “Come in.” Her voice sounded strange. The door opened, and the maid from last night came in. “Good morning, Ms. Baxter.” She carted a tray inside. The tiny wheels rolled off the solid wood flooring of the room. “Oh, what time is it?” She was surprised that she was bringing in her food. “I thought I had to appear at the breakfast table by seven.” She jumped out of bed, but before she could dash to the bathroom to fix herself and change into something presentable, the maid said something to hold her back. “The boss ordered us to let you sleep in. He said you were tired last night and would not be coming for breakfast.” The maid spoke formally, but the suggestive
Kara felt cold. There is no way Nico Bernardi would lie. Something clicked in her head. Kara could not help but connect the events that happened to her after she met Don Marco Bonacci. Was it possible that he had a hand in her misfortune? Could it be that she was targeting the wrong man? Feeling light-headed as questions swirled in her head, her body swayed. Nico Bernardi held out his hands to support her. “Are you alright?” His concerned voice penetrated her foggy brain. Kara shook her head. “I am fine. Can we leave now?” She choked on a sob. At about the same time, Nico’s silver Rolls-Royce pulled over. Nico Bernardi’s assistant, Bruno Bonetti, got out to assist them, but Nico waved him off. He assisted Kara and joined her after a while. They were silent on the way back. The car turned right and stopped at the parking lot of one of New York’s fine-dine restaurants. “Why are we here? I am tired. I wanted to rest.” Kara asked when Nico Bernardi turned the i
When Kara woke up the next day, Nico Bernardi was gone from the couch. She looked at the time on the bedside table and gasped. It was already nine. She bolted out of bed and hurriedly went to the bathroom to shower and change into something presentable. She then took her purse from last night and made sure the check Kate Ash gave her was there before leaving the room. At the stairs landing, she met Anna with her very familiar food cart. “Ms. Baxter! I was just about to deliver your food.” Anna took her appearance and asked, “Where are you going so early? The boss said you have to rest.” At the reminder of Nico Bernardi, Kara felt her expression softened. Who would have thought that despite the harsh exterior lies someone gentle and kind? “I have to go to the bank.” She told her. Anna nodded. She picked up a phone from her uniform’s pocket and dialed. Whe
Nico Bernardi’s intense look made her nervous. Kara wanted to look away but found that she could not.An invisible force compelled her to endure his stare until she started sweating under his heavy-lidded gaze. She saw desire in his eyes. She remembered that day vividly in her mind when he told her that he wanted her. It made her think that it was just a whim on his part. But now she was having doubts. Kara made a quick intake of breath and looked back at Nico’s face. The desire was gone.It made her think that she just imagined the whole thing. By now, Nico Bernardi had this calculating look, cold and dispassionate. He was inspecting her like a potential buyer and gauging whether the merchandise he wanted to purchase was worthy of his precious coins.“What do you think, Ms. Baxter? Should I sell you off? I think I could get triple, e
After he left Nico Bernardi’s office, Don Marco felt utterly disappointed.“How did it go?” Gordon Meyer, his assistant, asked.Marco’s lips thinned.“He refused my offer." He said, utterly disappointed“Why don’t you just take her by force? You know how important it is for you to have that girl.”He sighed.Don Marco was a man who usually got what he wanted. But now, he could not get it because a businessman by the name of Nic

On a remote island in the Far East, a man leisurely reads an article from the spread-out newspaper. It says:‘Hotel Billionaire Nico Bernardi has finally been laid down to rest in a private cemetery in Sicily. His burial was attended by his adoptive father, Don Leo Castiliogne, and friends in the business. ‘It was a sad day not only for the Castiliogne Family but for the business world, having lost such a brilliant businessman who gained traction for the world-class service his businesses offered. Nico Bernardi reinvented the service industry, making it one of the most sought-after professions in the world. ‘His death impacted the industry, and many people are in mourning to date. ‘Meantime, the Castiliogne Conglomerate will hold an emergency meeting to discuss certain management changes particularly since the position of CEO has been left open due to the unfortunate demise of its CEO.’Nico folded the newspaper in front of him and placed it on the side of the rectangular dining
After he heard the doctor declare Kara dead, a shift happened in Nico. His face became blank. He looked to be in a state of shock. “Sir, are you alright?” The doctor’s voice snapped Nico out of his mental breakdown. With a stony expression on his face, Nico kissed and patted Xoey’s head. Then, he handed his child to Frank. “Tell Rebecca to take care of our daughter.” Frank thinks of this as a bad sign. “Don’t act rashly, Nico. Think about Xoey. If something happens to you, too, who will care for your daughter? Her mother is gone. Don’t make her an orphan.” But it seemed as if Frank’s words had no effect on Nico. It comes and goes with the wind. Frank shook his head and took his phone to call his friends, Evan and Bruno. Both are expected to arrive today. ________Nico stepped out of the hospital, lost in his own grief. He felt constricted. He pounded on his chest several times, hoping that the simple act could make him feel alive, but it was no use. When he heard that
“What have you done, you monster!” Nico shouted while he was trying to apply pressure on Kara’s head to keep it from oozing blood. His snot mixed with his tears as he attended to Kara, who lay on the floor unconscious. “Kara, wake up. Please, don’t leave me behind.” Nico choked on the words. The picture it painted in his eyes was so unacceptable.Don Leo’s gun still reeked of smoke. The older man looked stunned. The bruise on his cheek slowly turned purple, but he did not seem to mind. Don Leo looked shocked!Xoey’s cries echoed around them. The child must have sensed that her mother was in danger. Earlier, the baby was silent because Rebecca tried to cushion her little ears with her palms. Speaking of Rebecca, she, too, looked frozen on the spot. She did not think that her father would be capable of gunning a person point-blank. Her jaw dropped in disbelief. In her shell-shocked state, she almost forgot about Xoey, and her hold on the baby slackened. Were it not for Mar
Nico heard the pain in Kara’s voice, but he willed himself not to look at her face, for it would be his undoing. He had things to settle first. There was general silence all around, except for Kara’s muffled sobs. “So, the prodigal son is awake.” Don Leo muttered under his breath. There was no relief nor excitement on his face at the knowledge that Nico surpassed death. For Don Leo, it would be better for everyone if Nico did not wake up. He can take care of the man until his last breath. But this twist forebodes nothing good for him and the Castiliogne family. Nico, getting out of the coma, was going to shake their world, and he wouldn’t let it happen. To him, Nico is better off as dead. For his part, Nico ignored the older man’s barb. He walked deliberately, his movements stiff due to the weakness in his leg, but he continued with his slow pace until he reached Don Leo’s side.Don Leo is a stocky man. Nico towered over him. He looked down on the man who had taken him under
Nico’s eyelids flickered several times like a butterfly wing atop a flower, ready to explore. A short while later, his eyelids fluttered open, showing the dark eyes underneath. He looked around him. The familiar room was empty. After a while, his eyes glittered when he remembered his last ordeal. He thought he would not make it. But he had the best motivation on Earth. He remembered how he literally bit the bullets and braved through the obstacles. He remembered how he got hit. At the remembrance, he searched his body to check his injuries. He had two - one on his leg and one on his arm. He sighed in elation, muttering under his breath a prayer of thanks. It was good to be back. He mumbled to himself. He thought he died on the firing range, but it seemed like fate was giving him a chance. He vowed to use this chance to be with his family. He had endured enough. At the thought of Kara and their baby, Nico pushed his body to sit up, but all his strength had left him.
Don Leo’s men swarmed around them, leaving Kara’s body frozen in fear.Sweat and goosebumps fought for dominance in lining her smooth skin while being driven out of Nico's room. “Wait a minute. We are not doing anything wrong?” She blurted out when Frank and Marco underwent a body check. Marco was unarmed, but Frank had one tuck on the hidden holster on his jacket. The men confiscated the firearm before pushing them to walk the narrow hallway out of Nico's bedroom. Kara’s eyes darted from side to side, noting the unfamiliarity of the place. This was not the way out, she concluded to herself.“Where are you taking us?” She asked once more, thankful that her voice sounded strong, but deep inside, her heart beat fast - so fast that she nearly thought it would jump out of her ribcage. The men remained silent. They did not say a word. The only sound she could hear was the ringing in her ears. Frank, who was walking ahead of her, warned. “Stop talking and just walk.” Two men flank
“What happened to him?” The sound of anguish in Kara’s voice reverberated around the silent room. Gingerly, she walked to the bed and stopped near Nico’s head. She was trembling as she did so. Her eyes never left Nico’s unmoving form on the bed. Nico was breathing. Her eyes flew to his face, studying the changes in them. “He lost weight.” Frank told her everything that happened after Nico disappeared. While Frank talked, Kara sat on the edge of the bed, suddenly feeling like her knees were to give up on her any minute. Her hands trembling, Kara took Nico's free hand carefully and pressed it between hers. She was afraid that her movement might have hurt him. “What happened?” Without letting her eyes drift from Nico's, Kara asked Frank. “He wanted to get out, but the system did not let him. Given his position, it was impossible to allow him to go. He already knew too much. Besides, you only have a one-way ticket to the organization.” “There is no way out.” It was Marco
Kara looked at the Grecian white building in front of her. Her brows furrowed in confusion.“I thought you were going to bring me to Nico? What are we doing here? This looks like a military camp to me.” She told him with a frown. For the first time, Kara regretted her decision to come to Sicily with Marco, and her doubt showed on her face as she watched Marco ducked his head when two men emerged from the structure. The men looked like hired goons. “Lower your head, and do not let them see your face.” Marco hissed. Kara did as she was told. She pressed her body into the cramped space at the back of the delivery truck where Marco pulled her in earlier. Afraid that any act of disobedience would endanger them. By now, she has fully understood that this is a covert territory and no one from the outside is permitted to enter. They were trespassing on private property!Suddenly, she felt for their safety. And fear slowly crept in. What if they were discovered and unable to leave this
