Nico grunted in pain.
Kara felt his body went rigid and was afraid of the repercussions of her actions.
To save herself from his wrath, she pushed him away and raced through the main door.
She opened it, relieved that escape was right at her fingertips.
But when she stepped out, a spotlight focused on her. She was momentarily blinded. Kara lifted her hand to protect her eyes. At this time, armed men swarmed around her.
She was so shocked. She froze in place.
“Don’t come near me.” She warned them.
She was surprised when they followed her order. They did not touch her and kept their distance, but they stood in a semi-circle around her, preventing her from going further from the house.
She thought it was because they feared her, but who was she deluding?
Kara did not need confirmation. A moment later, she felt Nico’s hands on her shoulders.
She shuddered when he bent his head, his breath fanning the back of her ears while he spoke in a deadly voice.
It was so full of venom like he just lost the last ounce of his patience with her.
“Get back in the house, Ms. Baxter.”
She bit her lip and ignored him. She would rather die trying to escape than allow this man to cage her in this g*d-forsaken house against his will.
Shutting him out, she ducked under the spread arms of two black-suited men and was surprised they did not stop her.
She saw the gate and raced through it. She unlatched the gate and pushed it out, but nothing happened.
The door won’t budge.
Then, she heard footsteps. The slow, measured sound of shoe soles alternately hitting the floor created a rhythm that matched the rise and fall of her chest.
It started slow, but now it was thudding fast and hard.
Kara felt trapped.
But she persisted. She pushed harder. The urgency to flee and get as far away from Nico Bernardi was of prime importance to her. She can not stay here under any circumstances.
She has to leave.
“The more you push the door, the harder the locks would cleave through each other.” Came the observation from the man she so desperately wanted to get away from.
“Come on, Ms. Baxter. Playtime is over. The staff needs to rest.”
The suggestion that she was an errant child on a tantrum rankled. She viciously ground out her teeth in anger.
“They are not your staff. They are your private army.” She said contemptuously, still refusing to turn around and look at him.
“And so? Keeping a private army is not endemic to just me.” Kara’s shoulders stiffened. This was close to admitting that he was a mob boss.
She bit her lip, her eyes misting.
“Ms. Baxter, every businessman needs to protect his interests. The police can not do that for us, so we do it for ourselves.” He was explaining, but Kara won’t buy it.
She knew he was more than what he played out to be.
He was a monster cloaked in a business suit and refinement.
But before she could argue her point, she felt something drop beside her. She looked down and was shocked when she was bent from the waist and hoisted to Nico Bernardi’s shoulders.
Now, she was hanging upside down like a sack on his broad shoulder. She thrashed and kicked, all to no avail because Nico Bernardi’s arms clamped her legs.
“Get your hands off me. Let me go!” Kara shrieked, but it fell on deaf ears.
“Help me! Help me!” She cried out, but nobody came to her rescue.Nobody said a word.
Nico Bernardi’s bodyguards turned a blind eye. They each averted their gaze.
“You are so noisy!” Nico Bernardi grumbled before she was abruptly released.
She thought she would fall and hit her head on the floor.
Scared s*itless, Kara grasped Nico Bernardi’s waist to keep from falling. She clung to him like a Koala.
She heard his scornful laugh, and her temper flared.
“You think this was amusing?” She challenged while she held on to him for dear life.
She felt nauseate at being carried like a sack with her hair sticking down from her head when at last, he stopped.
Nico tossed her unceremoniously to the bed.
The bed bounced with her weight. Kara dug her heels, propped her elbows and thrust her hips to get him off her, but Nico Bernardi was stronger. He sat on her legs, trapping her.
In the end, her position forced her to lie on her back with Nico Bernardi hovering over her, his legs straddling her hips.
She could feel his cr*tch in her lower belly and it alarmed her.
“What are you doing? Get off me!” She shrieked, afraid that in his anger, he would take her forcibly despite his assurance earlier.
“Let go! Get off me!” She screamed, her shrill voice sounded hoarse even to her ears.
She pummelled him with her hands.
Nico staggered. He leaned back to keep his balance. His hands clutched the bed covers for support in gritted teeth.
His expression becoming grim.
Kara shrank back when he pulled her up.
Instinctively, she covered her face at about the same time Nico Bernardi’s hands connected to her body.
He angrily grabbed the balls of her shoulders, and he shook her hard.
Kara felt like she was losing it. She thrashed on the bed, screaming at the top of her lungs.
Nico had to slap her. “Get a grip of yourself, Ms. Baxter!’ He shouted to her face.
It was like a dousing of ice-cold water to Kara. For a moment, she was blinded by fear, anger, desolation, and mounting frustration about this whole thing.
She massaged her stinging cheek with her palm when she came to her senses.
“You are becoming more of a liability than an asset, Ms. Baxter. Please, do not test my patience so much. You wouldn’t like it when I get angry.” He warned.
Then, he shoved her away.
Kara scuttled like a frightened rabbit. She went as far away from him as possible and curved into a ball, finding comfort in the crack between the edge of the bedboard and the nightstand.
She crossed her arms around her torso, her legs curled with her knees raised. She turned fearful eyes at him.
“Are you going to kill me?” She almost choked on the words.
Suddenly, she was more afraid of the prospect of dying than of staying in this h*ll-hole.
Nico Bernardi cocked his brows. “What do you think?” His eyes were expressionless, but Kara felt her body recoil in fear.
Then, he patted her cheek. He picked the hair that clung to her wet cheeks and brushed her silky strands with his fingers.
“If you will listen to me and do as I say, I promise not to hurt you again, Ms. Baxter.”
Her vision blurred.
“You will not kill me?” She hiccuped.
“No. But you have to behave. Don’t try to fight me on this, and nothing bad will happen to you.”
Tears left her eyes to flow down her cheeks.Kara finally accepted it to herself. There is nothing else to do but to accept her fate.
She took a deep breath and nodded.
“Okay.”
Nico left her side. He went to the bathroom, and when he returned, he was holding a bath towel.
“Wipe your face with this.” He instructed.
Kara took the towel and pressed its downy comfort to her cheeks. She was still sniffing.
When she finished, Nico Bernardi took the towel and put it away.
“Rest. Tomorrow, we have something to do.”
“What?” Her curiosity piqued, she asked.
Nico stopped.
“We will return to Club Roman.” He replied after a while.
Kara’s eyes grew round.
“Are you going to bring me back?” The wheels of her brain rolled. If Nico Bernardi were to return her, the Club would have to refund him.
Then, what would become of her?
“Will I be sold to another patron of the Club?” She asked.
It never occurred to her that Club Roman implements a Lemon Law for all the women it auctioned where buyers can have a chance to return the goods if they don’t find it suited to their taste. Just like a defective car.
She finds it difficult to breathe. What would happen to her if Nico would return her and get a refund? Will the organizers of the Club kill her, like what Kate Ash insinuated?
So many conjectures. All painting an even uglier picture of her future.
Nico watched the byplay of emotions on her face.
He wanted to toy with her, but he figured, given her state of mind and the stress level she was in, it would only take a thread to make her snap.
He almost pitied her.
Kara Baxter had no idea what hit her. She was so unprepared of the many ev*ls that lurked in every corner of this world.
The least he could do was to get her for himself. At least, she would have a better trade with him than with anyone else.
“I am not going back.” Her forceful voice cut into his thoughts.
Nico took a deep breath.
Kara Baxter is one testy girl. If their circumstances were different... Nico did not want to dwell on it.
“You do not have a choice on the matter Ms. Baxter. Club Roman imposed this rule when they started conducting their charity events. You have to come back so I can assure them that I am happy with my purchase.” He said, stressing the word happy, without smiling.
“And you are not going to get a refund?” She asked.
She was so nervous for his answer. She grabbed her hands together and twisted the fingers.
He looked hard on her. He wanted her to sweat inside, but he figured she was emotionally drained already.
He nodded. “Then, do not give me any reason to get a refund.” He told her, cutting the conversation between them.
“Rest and be ready for tomorrow. “ he told her before opening the door to her room.
But then he stopped abruptly as if he had forgotten something.
Kara slid inside the comforter. She lifted her head when she saw him stop in his tracks.
“What is it?” She asked, yawning. Her green eyes barely obscured when her eyelids were half-closed.
Nico Bernardi felt his expression softened. Kara Baxter looked like a child. So innocent and so beautiful!
“You can skip breakfast. I know you are tired.” Kara bit her lip and smiled wanly.
Nico Bernardi knew he was being easy on her but could not help it.
She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
“But that is just for tomorrow. The succeeding mornings at seven sharp, I require you to be present for breakfast. That is the rule here at the Castiliogne Villa.” He sounded stern, but he stopped when he saw her slumped back on the bed with her eyes closed.
Nico shook his head and left.
He proceeded to his room next door and called Bruno.
“Did you find anything about Rebecca?” He was direct to the point.
When Bruno answered in the negative, he dropped the call and sighed wearily on his bed.
“Rebecca.” His lips uttered her name. He felt stuck and powerless.
He closed his eyes, trying to picture Rebecca, but all that his mind conjured was that little minx in the other room with the same green eyes and red bow lips that haunted him for a while.
Bright light passing through the gap between two curtains touched Kara’s face, waking her from deep sleep. She yawned and stretched, feeling a soreness in her arms and legs. While she worked out the kinks, there was a knock on her door. She pulled herself up and put her legs over the edge, her feet reaching the floor. “Come in.” Her voice sounded strange. The door opened, and the maid from last night came in. “Good morning, Ms. Baxter.” She carted a tray inside. The tiny wheels rolled off the solid wood flooring of the room. “Oh, what time is it?” She was surprised that she was bringing in her food. “I thought I had to appear at the breakfast table by seven.” She jumped out of bed, but before she could dash to the bathroom to fix herself and change into something presentable, the maid said something to hold her back. “The boss ordered us to let you sleep in. He said you were tired last night and would not be coming for breakfast.” The maid spoke formally, but the suggestive
Kara felt cold. There is no way Nico Bernardi would lie. Something clicked in her head. Kara could not help but connect the events that happened to her after she met Don Marco Bonacci. Was it possible that he had a hand in her misfortune? Could it be that she was targeting the wrong man? Feeling light-headed as questions swirled in her head, her body swayed. Nico Bernardi held out his hands to support her. “Are you alright?” His concerned voice penetrated her foggy brain. Kara shook her head. “I am fine. Can we leave now?” She choked on a sob. At about the same time, Nico’s silver Rolls-Royce pulled over. Nico Bernardi’s assistant, Bruno Bonetti, got out to assist them, but Nico waved him off. He assisted Kara and joined her after a while. They were silent on the way back. The car turned right and stopped at the parking lot of one of New York’s fine-dine restaurants. “Why are we here? I am tired. I wanted to rest.” Kara asked when Nico Bernardi turned the i
When Kara woke up the next day, Nico Bernardi was gone from the couch. She looked at the time on the bedside table and gasped. It was already nine. She bolted out of bed and hurriedly went to the bathroom to shower and change into something presentable. She then took her purse from last night and made sure the check Kate Ash gave her was there before leaving the room. At the stairs landing, she met Anna with her very familiar food cart. “Ms. Baxter! I was just about to deliver your food.” Anna took her appearance and asked, “Where are you going so early? The boss said you have to rest.” At the reminder of Nico Bernardi, Kara felt her expression softened. Who would have thought that despite the harsh exterior lies someone gentle and kind? “I have to go to the bank.” She told her. Anna nodded. She picked up a phone from her uniform’s pocket and dialed. Whe
Nico Bernardi’s intense look made her nervous. Kara wanted to look away but found that she could not.An invisible force compelled her to endure his stare until she started sweating under his heavy-lidded gaze. She saw desire in his eyes. She remembered that day vividly in her mind when he told her that he wanted her. It made her think that it was just a whim on his part. But now she was having doubts. Kara made a quick intake of breath and looked back at Nico’s face. The desire was gone.It made her think that she just imagined the whole thing. By now, Nico Bernardi had this calculating look, cold and dispassionate. He was inspecting her like a potential buyer and gauging whether the merchandise he wanted to purchase was worthy of his precious coins.“What do you think, Ms. Baxter? Should I sell you off? I think I could get triple, e
After he left Nico Bernardi’s office, Don Marco felt utterly disappointed.“How did it go?” Gordon Meyer, his assistant, asked.Marco’s lips thinned.“He refused my offer." He said, utterly disappointed“Why don’t you just take her by force? You know how important it is for you to have that girl.”He sighed.Don Marco was a man who usually got what he wanted. But now, he could not get it because a businessman by the name of Nic
Kara woke up early.Like in the past days, she went down for breakfast at seven a.m. sharp. “Ms. Baxter, Buongiorno.” Anna greeted in Italian when she entered the aquarium-like dining room. As usual, the dining room is lively until a few minutes later, when Nico Bernardi arrives with his triumvirate of assistants, Bruno, Frank, and Evan. Bruno, whom she had met a few times, and Evan used to follow her around while she saw Frank around the hotel. The ambiance in the dining hall became silent, and the atmosphere tensed as these four tall men sat at the dining table for breakfast. Kara joined them. She did not wait for an invitation because the last time she did that, Mr. Bernardi embarrassed her. Now, she learned her lesson. She did not wait for his invitation and sat in her usual place. “Buongiorno.” Nico Bernardi greeted them while he unfolded the table napkin in his place. The maids started serving. When they were done with the tasks, the maids left, and the five of the
“Why is Ms Baxter scurrying off like a frightened rabbit?” Bruno asked when he entered Nico’s office. He was surprised when he met Kara on the way. She was walking so fast as if the Devil was after her.Bruno could hazard a guess. “Did you make a pass at her?” Nico Bernardi snapped to attention. He looked at his right-hand man with a frown like he just noticed him.Bruno snickered, his eyes becoming sharp.“I had been talking to you, but your mind was elsewhere.”Nico looked taken aback. Then he shook his head. “It’s nothing, Sly. Don’t worry.” He assured his friend, calling him by his nickname. But Bruno’s eyes squinted. “Are you sure? I think you are becoming more distracted these days. Maybe you need a woman to warm your bed? I already fired the last
Kara suffered through his embrace. Though it was uncomfortable and hot, with the sheet wrapped around her body, she did not squeak a pip. She lay there, letting him hug her. Kara did not know what was wrong with her. Maybe, it was because she wanted to prolong their interaction. It had been days since she last saw him. Often, he would come in late and leave the house before seven. It was always her and Evan at the breakfast table. “Where were you these past days?” She asked. She heard him draw a deep breath. It was like he was trying to restrain himself. Then, Kara felt his lips twitch. “Why, Ms. Baxter, do you miss me?” He was teasing her, and to her shame, she felt a blush warming her cheeks. “If I had known that you were waiting for me every night, I would have come home early and made sure to leave after breakfast,” he added. But she could feel its effect when her heart started thudding fast in her ribcage. “Of course not! I was just curious. We have not worked o

On a remote island in the Far East, a man leisurely reads an article from the spread-out newspaper. It says:‘Hotel Billionaire Nico Bernardi has finally been laid down to rest in a private cemetery in Sicily. His burial was attended by his adoptive father, Don Leo Castiliogne, and friends in the business. ‘It was a sad day not only for the Castiliogne Family but for the business world, having lost such a brilliant businessman who gained traction for the world-class service his businesses offered. Nico Bernardi reinvented the service industry, making it one of the most sought-after professions in the world. ‘His death impacted the industry, and many people are in mourning to date. ‘Meantime, the Castiliogne Conglomerate will hold an emergency meeting to discuss certain management changes particularly since the position of CEO has been left open due to the unfortunate demise of its CEO.’Nico folded the newspaper in front of him and placed it on the side of the rectangular dining
After he heard the doctor declare Kara dead, a shift happened in Nico. His face became blank. He looked to be in a state of shock. “Sir, are you alright?” The doctor’s voice snapped Nico out of his mental breakdown. With a stony expression on his face, Nico kissed and patted Xoey’s head. Then, he handed his child to Frank. “Tell Rebecca to take care of our daughter.” Frank thinks of this as a bad sign. “Don’t act rashly, Nico. Think about Xoey. If something happens to you, too, who will care for your daughter? Her mother is gone. Don’t make her an orphan.” But it seemed as if Frank’s words had no effect on Nico. It comes and goes with the wind. Frank shook his head and took his phone to call his friends, Evan and Bruno. Both are expected to arrive today. ________Nico stepped out of the hospital, lost in his own grief. He felt constricted. He pounded on his chest several times, hoping that the simple act could make him feel alive, but it was no use. When he heard that
“What have you done, you monster!” Nico shouted while he was trying to apply pressure on Kara’s head to keep it from oozing blood. His snot mixed with his tears as he attended to Kara, who lay on the floor unconscious. “Kara, wake up. Please, don’t leave me behind.” Nico choked on the words. The picture it painted in his eyes was so unacceptable.Don Leo’s gun still reeked of smoke. The older man looked stunned. The bruise on his cheek slowly turned purple, but he did not seem to mind. Don Leo looked shocked!Xoey’s cries echoed around them. The child must have sensed that her mother was in danger. Earlier, the baby was silent because Rebecca tried to cushion her little ears with her palms. Speaking of Rebecca, she, too, looked frozen on the spot. She did not think that her father would be capable of gunning a person point-blank. Her jaw dropped in disbelief. In her shell-shocked state, she almost forgot about Xoey, and her hold on the baby slackened. Were it not for Mar
Nico heard the pain in Kara’s voice, but he willed himself not to look at her face, for it would be his undoing. He had things to settle first. There was general silence all around, except for Kara’s muffled sobs. “So, the prodigal son is awake.” Don Leo muttered under his breath. There was no relief nor excitement on his face at the knowledge that Nico surpassed death. For Don Leo, it would be better for everyone if Nico did not wake up. He can take care of the man until his last breath. But this twist forebodes nothing good for him and the Castiliogne family. Nico, getting out of the coma, was going to shake their world, and he wouldn’t let it happen. To him, Nico is better off as dead. For his part, Nico ignored the older man’s barb. He walked deliberately, his movements stiff due to the weakness in his leg, but he continued with his slow pace until he reached Don Leo’s side.Don Leo is a stocky man. Nico towered over him. He looked down on the man who had taken him under
Nico’s eyelids flickered several times like a butterfly wing atop a flower, ready to explore. A short while later, his eyelids fluttered open, showing the dark eyes underneath. He looked around him. The familiar room was empty. After a while, his eyes glittered when he remembered his last ordeal. He thought he would not make it. But he had the best motivation on Earth. He remembered how he literally bit the bullets and braved through the obstacles. He remembered how he got hit. At the remembrance, he searched his body to check his injuries. He had two - one on his leg and one on his arm. He sighed in elation, muttering under his breath a prayer of thanks. It was good to be back. He mumbled to himself. He thought he died on the firing range, but it seemed like fate was giving him a chance. He vowed to use this chance to be with his family. He had endured enough. At the thought of Kara and their baby, Nico pushed his body to sit up, but all his strength had left him.
Don Leo’s men swarmed around them, leaving Kara’s body frozen in fear.Sweat and goosebumps fought for dominance in lining her smooth skin while being driven out of Nico's room. “Wait a minute. We are not doing anything wrong?” She blurted out when Frank and Marco underwent a body check. Marco was unarmed, but Frank had one tuck on the hidden holster on his jacket. The men confiscated the firearm before pushing them to walk the narrow hallway out of Nico's bedroom. Kara’s eyes darted from side to side, noting the unfamiliarity of the place. This was not the way out, she concluded to herself.“Where are you taking us?” She asked once more, thankful that her voice sounded strong, but deep inside, her heart beat fast - so fast that she nearly thought it would jump out of her ribcage. The men remained silent. They did not say a word. The only sound she could hear was the ringing in her ears. Frank, who was walking ahead of her, warned. “Stop talking and just walk.” Two men flank
“What happened to him?” The sound of anguish in Kara’s voice reverberated around the silent room. Gingerly, she walked to the bed and stopped near Nico’s head. She was trembling as she did so. Her eyes never left Nico’s unmoving form on the bed. Nico was breathing. Her eyes flew to his face, studying the changes in them. “He lost weight.” Frank told her everything that happened after Nico disappeared. While Frank talked, Kara sat on the edge of the bed, suddenly feeling like her knees were to give up on her any minute. Her hands trembling, Kara took Nico's free hand carefully and pressed it between hers. She was afraid that her movement might have hurt him. “What happened?” Without letting her eyes drift from Nico's, Kara asked Frank. “He wanted to get out, but the system did not let him. Given his position, it was impossible to allow him to go. He already knew too much. Besides, you only have a one-way ticket to the organization.” “There is no way out.” It was Marco
Kara looked at the Grecian white building in front of her. Her brows furrowed in confusion.“I thought you were going to bring me to Nico? What are we doing here? This looks like a military camp to me.” She told him with a frown. For the first time, Kara regretted her decision to come to Sicily with Marco, and her doubt showed on her face as she watched Marco ducked his head when two men emerged from the structure. The men looked like hired goons. “Lower your head, and do not let them see your face.” Marco hissed. Kara did as she was told. She pressed her body into the cramped space at the back of the delivery truck where Marco pulled her in earlier. Afraid that any act of disobedience would endanger them. By now, she has fully understood that this is a covert territory and no one from the outside is permitted to enter. They were trespassing on private property!Suddenly, she felt for their safety. And fear slowly crept in. What if they were discovered and unable to leave this
