Chapter Five

“I know”, I say, holding my hands up in defense. I didn't want to explain my life story now or ever. I have to live with her for 4 years so how would I not end up telling her my life story? I will tell you more tomorrow. I really need to get some sleep before I crash.

“Promise? She asked, holding up her pinky.

“Yes”, I said as I passed out under my covers to a peaceful sleep until my alarm woke me to say time to get up for work. It is like waking up no matter if light or dark outside make me not a “morning person” or as I should call it, “waking up person”. I grab my phone off the nightstand to shut up the alarm. I barely open my eyes and grunt as the lights from my phone fade into my sight. It is quiet which means Tearis is not in the room. The good thing about this room is that it is the only one that has only a bathroom and shower. Weird right? I get up and get a nice warm shower like I do every day before and after my shift at work. As I'm walking back into the room with my towel wrapped around me and one on my head. I scream because not only is Tea back, but Drew is with her. Calm down, Emy Drew is gay boy central. So not the point you could have been a serial killer. Embyrson only you, me, and the headmistress have a key to this room. From what she told me your mother is the new head mythology professor, so she wanted you protected till she arrived. Weird because I don’t know how I got this room with you but I’m not complaining.

I walk over to my dresser and pick out a matching set of panties and bra to put on then I go over to the shelf with the clean scrubs and pick out a black and blue set. I take it and go back into the bathroom to get dressed. When I came back out Tearis was looking at me and saying are you a doctor. I just shake my head not as I'm picking up my phone, keys and wallet. I just say before walking out the door I work at a clinic. Gasps as the door closes echo in my ear. Why would that cause such a strange reaction from first year college students? I put that behind me as I pull into the back of the building parking lot and as soon as I park, I only have to wait for 3 minutes before Lincoln is at my car door. Hello, Embyrson, he says as he opens the door for me. I just wanted to let you know that for the next few shifts I will have my nephew be guard so you will be expecting Dixon tomorrow night instead of me. Okay thank you for letting me know so I wouldn’t have to tase him. He just does a husky laugh at that as he looks off into the woods. I would pay to see that. Now let's get you inside. I get inside set up for the night before Lucian arrives. He seems less grumpy if everything is set up, which I learned quickly how to do to his liking the second and third night I was here.

“Lucian, great to see you as always”, Lincoln says as he walks out the door past him.

“If this wasn't neutral territory, I'd bite him”, Lucian grumbles as he walks into his office. Embyrson, he says to me with a father-like voice which he calls for me every night once in his office to discuss any messages or notifications the same way every time. I think he is starting to tolerate me. I let him know that someone named Amdis from the office of Yssgarth called and said they needed him to make a house call tonight at 4:00 am he just cursed under his breath and said OKAY. Oh, Embyrson we will be closing tonight at 3:00 since I have a house call. You can leave once everything is filed. If done by early, then you leave early.

“Yes, sir”, I said.

“Okay go keeps the front desk warm then will ya”, he said as he stood up to check his phone.

I took that as my cue to leave and as soon I went to the front desk Lincoln was waiting there with two guys who looked bloody and drunk. “Doc code red”, Linc yells from him holding up the one guy with a look of pure disgust but nonetheless helping him stand. Well damn Linc came with me to exam room 1 and brought pritch with you. I don't know how many times I must tell him to stay off that damn reservation. This town is so weird, but it is called devils lake so I’m sure it brings all the crazies and weirdos. The doc looks back at Jacob and says to him go to room 2 and try not to spill anymore blood on your way there. The guy known as Jacob just grunts and walks back to exam 2 when I hold the door open to him.

Why does he smell like copper and burning wood? I think being up this far north is changing my senses. It has been a long night of waiting for doc to patch up the two drunk idiots so I can file my paperwork and finally we close up for the night. Before I could leave, I heard my phone ring, and it could only be my mother who else would call. I pick it up when I see her name excited to talk to her since we've been playing phone tag for the last couple of weeks since I've been here. Hey sweetheart she says with a sad tone to her voice.

“What's wrong mama?” I ask knowing I don’t want to hear her say it.

“I’m sorry we were playing phone tag. I just been trying to get everything ready for the move up there but there were a few snags along the way. I’m sorry love I'm stuck down here in Athens, and I won’t be able to be there for your birthday. I will make it up to you. I know we have never missed a year but this time it is out of my control.”

I can hear the heartbreak of it in her voice. It's okay mama we will celebrate when you get here, I said. I must get back to work but I will call you tomorrow, I love you mother. She repeated the words I love you before hanging up. No one was in the office, so I finished up and locked up. I was trying to get out of the corridor but there were drunken college students all down the hall. Some passed out and some made out. I can’t get out the normal way, so I go down the hall to what is a basketball court. That is so strange that would be behind the last door in this hall. I ran into a wall of muscle. He was the type you see in a supernatural movie with his ability to dazzle you and make your panties so wet you need to clinch your thighs together. It was so electric when my eyes connect to hazel eyes that are browner than any other color, so sweet and creamy, I could look at him forever, but he cleared his throat and played with his blackened tousled hair. He looked me in the eyes like I was his next breath and asked, “what is your name?”

Just then Lincoln comes up and pulls me away from mister handsome.

“Come on time to go home”, says Lincoln as he pulls me out the door and into the fresh out. We walk to my car and Linc is quiet until he lets my hand go since he was pulling me behind him like an errant child. He finally let my hand go when he opened my car door as I clicked the unlock button on my key fob. He looks like someone pissed in his cheerios. Which of course me and my no filter self when I’m this annoyed say such a thing.

“Who pissed in your cheerios dude?”

He rubs his beard with a look of frustration and says, “Embyrson you don’t know the inner workings of this city, but I want you to be safe so please stay the hell away from that boy he is not what he seems.”

“Linc, he just helped me from falling on my ass. What's so bad about that?” I was confused at how he doesn’t understand the connection that happened back there.

“I am going to go in and make sure everyone is safe. Please remember people here are not as they seem, and danger lurks.” He says closing my door and walking off toward the door we just exited.

Well, that was weird as hell. This place is so strange but I chalk it up to being the northern region of the country. People here seems like from some other realm. I pick those thoughts for another day. As I am backing out of the parking space my car occupied I look over at the door and spot the wall of muscle I ran into just standing against the wall just staring at me. So freaky, yeah Linc might be right and stay away from that one.

I get home to Tearis and tacos waiting for me. She jumps up from the seating area and says, “tacos and talk”.

“Let me shower this stench off then I'm game for tacos. “And talk”, I say as I walk into the bathroom.

I turn on the shower as hot as it would go and let the bathroom steam up before stepping into the shower. I put my head under the water and let it warm my muscles up and take a moment to enjoy the warmth and peace of the water falling over my body. I took as long I could in the shower before the water went cold making me have to get out before Tea came looking for me. I dried off with the fluffiest white towels I have ever felt. I put on my favorite panties and t-shirt. It my normal nightwear as I don’t like to feel so restricted in my sleep plus it just me and Tearis here.

I walk out of the bathroom and head straight to the seating area ready for some tacos since I haven't eaten anything except a chocolate croissant and a chai tea latte today at lunch. Tearis is sitting on her knees on her bed waiting for me to spell it while eating taco. I grab some of the tacos off the table and go over to my bed and settle for the evening under my favorite fluffy blanket and between bites I tell her all about my childhood and about the last few weeks.

After all the food is consumed and we are both quiet for a moment she yawns making me yawn. I rub my eyes and snuggle into my blankets before I turn off my light, “Okay Tea I need sleep see you in the morning as I turn over and fall fast asleep.

I wake up to my alarm clock going off for the third time since I hit snooze twice. I really need to get a physical one so I can throw it or put it far enough away so I have to get up and be on time. I am running late to class on my first day, not a great start Em I murmur to myself as I run into the class and into my seat before the professor even enters the room. My first class of this semester is only two days a week which of course is Anthropology 160: Forms of Folklore, and my brain is not awake this early in the morning. I'm here for a master’s degree in Folklore and Mythology. What does anthropology even have to do with this?

The professor walks in and like déjà vu, he is in his mid-40 dark skin with short black hair and gray eyes. I have seen those eyes somewhere. It's like a dream. He clears his throat, bringing me out of my thoughts. He proceeds to ensure everyone on his roster is present and those not marked off so he may kick them out of his class. It was an hour of mundane lectures. I was glad that was over because at least I had Latin for 2 hours. After that I was free for the rest of the day until time for work. After Latin class I met up with Dew and Tea for burgers and fries at the cafe. I talked and laughed with them. It was good to have some friends at school and not be alone for once. I thought I would miss all of my alone time, but I only miss it a little when I feel drained but it is like being drained lately is causing a hunger that I never had before.

I smelled his woodsy and wood burning scent as soon he stepped into my eyesight and the wind blew. How am I smelling a scent from someone like he's been out near a bonfire but it's daytime so that couldn’t be it. Weird

“Hello, my name is Daxten. May I join you guys?” I shrugged my shoulders and Dew pointed at the empty chair left by Jade and said, “sure take a seat”.

It was like we couldn’t stop looking at each other but had to look away before anyone noticed. That is when I told Tearis that I had some studying to do as I stood up to leave. She says “don’t sleep all day/night” before turning back to Dew and finishing up a conversation from earlier. I walk back to my dorm and before I reach for the front door handle into the dorm lobby, I get this feeling like someone is watching me as the hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention. I look around to make sure it is not just paranoia, but no one seems to be around. “Strange,” I say to myself out loud, opening the door and taking a step into the main dorm lobby. As I get into the elevator and hit the 5th floor button I scold me quietly for being freaked out over nothing. I keep thinking about all three men that have transfixed me with their eyes as the elevator dings and I step out onto my floor. I have to admit the attraction to Daxten was nothing as electric as to the guys with caramel and hazel eyes, but then again, he didn’t touch me so maybe it was some weird electro current from the previous two. Daxten is the man you want to climb like a tree with his Russet brown hair that is shaved on the sides and long on the top that long enough to run your hands through and that bread with same color as his hair, not to mention that body of his that is the mesomorph type and all man which says bad boy on a motorcycle because of his denim jeans, white t-shirt, leather Jacket and MC cut with biker boots to finish off his ensemble. His eyes are the dreamiest grayest blue color I have ever seen. Just one look at him and I need to change my panties. Since coming to Devil’s Lake my hormones have been amped up 1000% especially after the last couple of nights. Dixon just made my pussy soaked. I had to walk away when his nostrils flared, and I was afraid he could smell me but that couldn’t really happen but still I had to walk away to get my head on straight.
