The wailing of the sirens could be heard all over the downtown vicinity as firefighters hurriedly put out the flames ravaging the building that has exploded while paramedics, policemen with K9 companions did the best they could to retrieve as many survivors as they could from the bomb explosion that just happened less than an hour ago.
Zachary Montgomery, an FBI agent working in the counterterrorism division surveyed the perimeter of the explosion, his eyes scanning the entire area as well as its neighboring buildings. He turned as one of his agents approached him and relayed some updates.
It was only Tuesday night, and the explosion immediately became big news all over the city. Media vans, photographers, and news anchor together with their videographer tried to get good angles of the destroyed building to feature on their primetime channel for the evening news.
“Is the bomb squad already there?”
“Yes, sir,” the agent answered immediately. “The sniffing dogs are on the ground as well for clearing the area.”
He nodded.
“I want to get all CCTV recordings within the radius of the explosion,” Zach instructed firmly. “Have them on my desk tomorrow before lunch. If there’s any problem, you let me know immediately.”
The agent nodded and took off to start on the task assigned to him.
“Got any updates for me, Johnson?”
Malcolm Johnson, a police captain looked up and gave him a hard look.
“Don’t you have your men giving you updates, Montgomery?” He said dryly as he motioned for his men to leave them alone. “Why do you have to put your nose on what I have found out? Don’t tell me your men are incompetent that you have to rely on ours.”
Zachary let out a laugh.
“You know better who’s the better team,” he returned. “The bureau has already been informed about this. I’m pretty sure you will know that we will be taking over in a few days.”
“As you always do,” Malcolm answered furiously. “But, while the case is still in our hands, then there’s nothing you can do about it.”
His phone suddenly rang, and he picked it up.
“Yes, Ash?” Malcolm answered and then remained silent for a while. He then let out a hissed. “I’ll give you a call. The moment I’ll get hold of your sister, I’m going to give her a piece of my mind as well. She just got back on her feet after that accident and she’s already giving me a headache.”
“I’m okay. Yes, I’m just finishing up here,” he continued after a few seconds. “I’ll drop by once everything is clear here. Tell Aunt Vicky I’ll be coming over.”
Zachary looked at Malcolm with a smirk.
“Your girlfriend keeping tabs on you, Malc?”
“More like babysitting for her elder sister who always love getting into trouble,” Malcolm replied begrudgingly as he pocketed his phone. “She just recovered from a motorcycle accident and now her sister just told me that she took it out for a spin already.”
“Well, you always tend to get your nose in other people’s business,” Zachary stated.
“Look who’s talking,” Malcolm returned and the two shared a laugh. He then shook Zachary’s hand firmly. “I’ll give you a call once I have the entire report, Montgomery. By end of the week, for sure the case will be on your desk already. Keeps the workload from our station lesser than what we already have.”
Zachary nodded.
“Hey, I’m done here,” he said calmly. “Let’s grab a couple of drinks before heading home.”
Malcolm shook his head.
“I’m heading over to Ash, the one who called,” he answered patiently. “If you’re okay, they owned a diner. I’m sure they have some beer there as well. It’s just right around the corner from here.”
“I don’t see any problem with that,” Zachary agreed.
The two men then walked off and turned right then crossed the pedestrian before entering a quaint diner, which is half-lit since they closed their establishment earlier due to the incident that just occurred. Malcolm tapped on the glass and the woman, who was sitting behind the counter, looked up and a look of relief crossed her face.
Zachary watched as she moved and was surprised for a few seconds, to see her in a wheelchair, as she wheeled herself towards the glass door and unlock it for them.
“Are you done with your work?” She asked Malcolm immediately.
Malcolm nodded as he turned to lock the door. He then took hold of the handles behind her chair and pushed her gently towards one dining table, where a pitcher of beer has already been prepared with mugs, as well as some chips and a pot of tea. “By the way, this is Zachary Montgomery,” he introduced firmly as he put on the brakes on her chair. “He’s in FBI and was checking on the case, too.”
“Hello, I’m Ashley Walters,” she said softly, shaking his hand.
“Where the hell did Alex go?” Malcolm then asked tightly. He looked around the diner. “I swear, that lady will hear a lot from me when she arrives here. Didn’t the doctor told her not to take the bike out for a spin? And, why the hell is that bike still with her? Didn’t your aunt had it up for sale?”
Ashley shook her head.
“You know how stubborn Alex can be,” she said gently as she poured tea on her cup. “She called up Winston from the repair shop. Before Aunt Vicky could hold it off, she already had taken it out.”
Malcolm frowned, shaking his head as he handed Zachary his beer.
“I’m giving her a piece of my mind once she gets here,” he said coldly. He took a drink from his mug and put it down the table, leaning on his seat comfortably. “She has no regards for her safety.”
Before Ashley could reply, a noise came behind them.
“Oh, I’m pretty sure she’s just going to roll her eyes on you during your lecture.”
Zachary turned around to see who the voice belonged to.
Standing a few feet from them, stood a tall, dark-haired girl, looking at them in amusement while holding a helmet to her side. She was wearing laced-up leather boots, tight-fitting jeans, and a plain white shirt under a denim jacket.
What captured Zachary’s attention the most was the glint in her bright, emerald eyes.
Alexandra Walters had just pushed opened the door to the diner, she rans together with her aunt and younger sister, when she heard Malcolm’s litany that he will be giving her a piece of his mind. Another long and boring lecture, for sure. She rolled her eyes at that thought as she took off her helmet and stopped when she noticed that there was another person with them.“Oh, I’m pretty sure she’s just going to roll her eyes on you during your lecture.” She commented sarcastically.Ashley, her younger sister looked up with a relief expression on her face while the two men turned towards her. While Malcolm was giving her a frown, the man beside him was looking at her with curiosity and if she guessed correct, somewhat interested.“Where the hell were you?!”They looked towards the voice and Alexandra saw her aunt, coming out from the kitchen holding a wooden spatula and pointing it threateningly at Alexandra.
Alexandra woke up the following day at the sound of her alarm at four-thirty in the morning, reaching over the side table and turned it off. She remained still for a few minutes before finally sitting up and stretching her arms up.She finally got up and changed into her running clothes, putting over a grey hoodie and grabbing her cap before going out of her room. After making sure that she closely secured the service door where she went out, she put on her headset and pressed play on her phone. She then set her watch and started walking briskly for a while, doing some stretching before finally picking up the pace. She started running on her feet, her breathing synchronizing with her pace. She approached the uphill part of the city, and she adjusted her pacing before speeding up again. She ran a total of 10 miles in an hour and a half and she stopped over the park for a few minutes to take a breather before walking back home.Alexandra took a drink from t
Zachary was checking the explosion site when he was alerted of an incident at the diner he went to last night with Malcolm. After giving instructions to his agents of where he will be, he walked towards The Urban Diner where there are two police cars parking in front and personnel holding off customers or curious crowds.“FBI,” he said, showing his badge and he was allowed in.The sight that greeted him was something he would not have thought of. Alexandra, the woman who piqued his interest after seeing her last night was sitting on one chair, nursing a black eye. He watched as she was glaring daggers at two men, who were being read their rights as handcuffs were being placed on them. Her younger sister is beside her, nursing a wound on her right upper arm and saying some words to calm her down.He looked down and found several firearms as well as some IED explosives.“I’ll just have them in for process at the station and hand them
Zach placed down the folder back on his desk after going through the report that his field agents did over the explosion site that happened. He sat up straight and typed into his keyboard, looking at the footages his agents had gotten from the CCTV’s installed by the city. His phone suddenly rang, and he reached into his drawer to see who’s calling.“Zach,” he said after answering the call.“Hi!” A sweet voice came, which belong to the woman he is currently dating, Jacinta Jacobs. “Did I call at a bad time? I can call again later.”He leaned back on his chair.“No, no, it’s okay,” he assured gently. “Is there anything wrong?”“I have to cancel for our date this weekend,” she said apologetically. “Mom called me up this morning and asked if I can make a trip back home. Dad’s not doing well, and she just wants to be prepared for anything that m
Alex tapped her pen on the file she had printed out and read through the description she had of Zach Montgomery, or she had cynically called Mr. FBI on a late Thursday night. She knew the moment she met his eyes that first night is that he is someone that she should be careful of. He’s someone that she’s not going to depend on to keep her background classified.“Harvard Law,” she commented with a smile. “Well, well, well. Touché, Mr. FBI.”She read through the file that was sent to her.Zachary Montgomery, born March 28, 1985, to parents Nathaniel Montgomery, a well-known criminal lawyer in the country and was formerly a District Attorney back in his days and Marian Montgomery, a top cardiothoracic surgeon. Zach is the third child and son in a brood of seven. While his two older brothers, and one younger brother, followed in the footsteps of their father, he somehow had a changed of mind because after he finished Law Sc
Zach parked his car on a Monday morning and immediately went out, reaching for his phone in his jacket pocket. He saw his secretary calling him.“Yes, Anne?”“You have one interview for the translator this morning, sir,” she immediately informed, a hint of amusement in her voice. “She’s already here along with her credentials. It looks good.”“Just one?!” He asked intently as he made his way to the elevator to bring him up.He then ended the call when he got in the car and pressed the number to his floor level. He frowned slightly at the thought of only reaching one person for the job. He then started planning in his mind to have qualified agents enrolled in foreign languages just to further up their performance.“Morning, Zach,” some of his officemates greeted when they passed each other along the hallway. The minute he turned left towards his office; he was greeted by the vi
Alex paid the taxi driver her fare and went down the from the car. She stood silently at the sidewalk for a long while, contemplating on what to do. She cursed inwardly when her phone rang. She looked at it and saw Damon calling.“What?!” She answered hardly.“I take it that your interview didn’t go well,” Damon mused sarcastically. “Why didn’t you win him with your charm, Walters? I’ve seen you lure those militants back in Iraq, Russia, and Warsaw, and it didn’t take you that much effort. Did you make Montgomery angry with your attitude?”“He’s threatened by a mere slip of a woman, that’s what,” she spat back. She looked to her right and frown when she saw a light grey Land Rover, parked in front of the diner. She traveled her eyes towards the dining area and frowned. “I’ll call you back, Damon.”She abruptly ended the call, stuffing her phone in her bla
Alex recoiled from the impact down on the floor. She groaned inwardly as she rolled to her side, her eyes searching frantically for her sister through the hazy atmosphere. She brought herself up and her heart started to beat faster at the sight of Ashley, down on the floor, her wheelchair a few feet away from her while she whimpers in pain.“Ashley,” Alex stated as she crawled to where she is and immediately brought her wheelchair back upright and then checking down on her. She touched her on the arm gently and rolled her carefully to lie on her back. “Ashley, can you hear me?”“Alex,” Ashley said in fear, gripping her arms tightly. She coughed for a while. “What just happened?”Alex turned to Zachary, who is helping their father up and then proceeding to other customers in the diner while he is shouting orders on his handheld radio. She can now hear sirens blaring around their vicinity as well as other people scre
