~Charlotte

"Adam?" I called out, my voice echoing through the empty room. "Are you here?"

I searched the room thoroughly, peeking behind the door and into the closet, but there was no sign of him. My heart sank as I realized he wasn't here.

Dejected, I turned to leave the room, my footsteps heavy with disappointment.

But just as I reached the door, I heard a familiar voice call out to me.

"Charlotte?" Adam's voice echoed through the hall.

I looked up to face Adam, my heart thudding against my chest. But something was off. His usual easy smile was missing, his posture stiff and uncomfortable.

"Adam?" I asked, my voice small and hesitant. "What's wrong? Why do you look so worried?"

He shifted from foot to foot, his eyes darting away from mine. "I, uh...I'm just a little stressed about work," he said, his words tumbling out in a rush. "How have you been?"

His sudden change in demeanor set off alarm bells in my head. Something wasn't right.
