“Thanks”, she mumbled before unfastening her seatbelt.

“Yeah, sure”, Ethan replied. “Thanks for today, too”

Claire gave him a small smile before hopping off his car. She felt intimidated during the short ride, not only because it was her first time a boy dropped her off but also because it would probably take her a lifetime to pay for his Lamborghini if ever she damaged anything in it.

She gave him a small wave, although she wasn’t sure if he was looking out through the tinted window, before turning around and entering the apartment complex, sighing in exhaustion. It has been a long day for her since she was still not used to spending a few extra hours at school.

“Hi, dear”

Claire closed the door behind her and smiled at her mother. “Hi, mom”

“How was school?”

“Fine”, she shrugged. “The usual. Plus, the tutor session”

After that, she went to her bedroom, placed her backpack on her chair, and threw off her shoes before finally collapsing on her bed, face down. Once she closed her eyes, the memory of Ethan’s dimpled smile immediately clicked into her mind. Her forearm throbbed on cue as if reliving the moment the guy held her there.

“Agh”, she groaned, flipping over to face the ceiling. Claire was pretty much inexperienced with boys, so it was fairly easy for Ethan to make her fall for his flirty tricks. She knew it was just how he acted around girls, but she couldn’t help but feel flattered.

Her stomach growled in hunger, snapping her out of her thoughts, so she stood up and headed to the door. When she reached out for the doorknob, she spotted her backpack out of the corner of her eye. Curiosity got the best of her, so she rummaged through her bag’s front pocket until she saw a small piece of scratch paper folded in half. She opened it and as expected, Ethan’s phone number was written there in squiggly lines.

She grabbed her phone and quickly saved his number.

---

It was a great Saturday.

Birds chirped happily, forming somersaults in the air before finally landing on the branches of the trees lining the sidewalk. The sun was bright and warm even though the summer was ending. Claire liked how she was still able to enjoy warm sunny days like this for a while more.

She had a long night last night. After going home from school a few hours later than usual, she still had to work on a few homework due next week to spare herself from more workload during the weekend. She had dark bags under her eyes and her back hurts a little but the weather improved her quite gloomy mood.

Claire rode the bus heading to the city public library. By the time she arrived, fifteen minutes later, she immediately went on to the stack of books and started sorting them. Books were supposed to be returned to the bookshelves as soon as possible so she wasn’t sure if the night shift employees genuinely didn’t have the time to return them or they were simply relying on the next shift’s employees to take care of it.

Either way, she wouldn’t say she was pleased.

“Hey, I got this”

Claire turned around and found Katie walking towards her with her usual friendly smile. Honestly, she couldn’t imagine anybody hating her, Katie was just welcoming towards anybody.

“Oh, no, it’s fine”, she replied, waving her arms and returning her co-worker’s friendly smile with a reassuring one. “We can work on this together, at least”

“I’ll work on this”, Katie argued. “Besides, I love arranging books as much as you like working behind the counter, so…”

She laughed at that. She never explicitly expressed that she loved working behind the counter more and she wasn’t sure if Katie really meant what she said instead of just trying to reassure her. But she stepped aside anyway, giving Katie the space to work on the stack of books.

“Okay”, she replied. “Thanks”

When she arrived by the counter, she found a girl leaning against it, a few books piled on her right. The library just opened less than twenty minutes ago so she wasn’t expecting anybody to be checking out books just yet.

“I’m so sorry”, she breathed out as she jogged to position herself in front of the computer. She then gestured towards the books laid on top of the counter. “Are you checking out these books?”

The girl smiled. Claire caught herself admiring her. The girl was gorgeous. She had long black hair and equally dark eyes, her skin was a perfect tan, and her makeup, rather than being caked on, was natural and accentuated her features perfectly.

“Yes”, she replied, pushing the books in her direction. “But I don’t have an account here yet. I’m new”

Claire took the books. There were three of them— one was an instructional book about drawing portraits and the other two were a compilation of famous artworks. She was suddenly reminded of the art-loving Ethan but she slightly shook her head to dismiss the thought.

“Okay”, she said while typing the command on the computer to make an account for a new borrower. Once set up, she looked up at the girl, “Name?”

“Stephanie”, the girl replied, smiling to reveal a set of perfect teeth. “Stephanie Lopez”

“Got it”

A few moments later, Stephanie finished filling up the forms she needed to register as a new borrower. Internet in public establishments isn’t the best so there was an awkward moment of silence as the two of them waited for the system to update.

Claire was bad at making small talks, but the seconds seemed to drag on due to the growing awkwardness, so she tried anyway.

“So, uhh”, she started before coughing to clear to her throat. “You’re new? I mean, here in Cartersville?”

“Yeah, actually”, Stephanie politely replied. “But my family’s only going to be here for a few months, they had business to take care of”

“Oh”, she nodded and glanced at the progress bar on the computer screen. “I’m sorry, this is taking too long”

“Oh no, it’s fine”, Stephanie chuckled. “Public wifi isn’t the best”

“Tell me about it”, she replied, rolling her eyes playfully.

They both laughed at that.

“You seem nice”, Stephanie started to say. “What time do you get off work? If you don’t mind, maybe we can… hang out?”

Claire was a bit taken aback by this, but she couldn’t see why not. “Yeah, sure. I get off by 4 pm, but maybe we can have lunch together instead?”

“That works, too”

“I remember moving here”, she said. After looking at the computer screen, she realized that the update was finished so she started to check out the books. “I was a child then, but I still remember how it sucked to not know anybody”

She was focused on checking out the books but she saw Stephanie nod in response. When she was done, she stood up and slid the books across the counter.

“Here’s my number”, Stephanie told her as she handed her a card. She thought they were the same age, based on how she looked, but after receiving a business card from her, she was starting to doubt it. “Nice to meet you”

“Nice to meet you, too”, she replied and took the card.

With a wave, Stephanie turned around to leave, pressing the books against her chest.

She held her large cup of black iced tea with both hands and took a small sip. Despite her protests, Stephanie insisted to pay for her.“How long have you been here?”Claire placed her cup on the table before looking up to meet her eyes. Tilting her head in thought, she replied, “Not that long. We moved here when I was ten, and I’m seventeen now”Stephanie nodded. She was about to respond when she was interrupted by the waiter with their lunch on a tray balanced with one hand. Both girls politely smiled as the waiter carefully set their utensils and plates on the table. When he was gone, Stephanie started eating her pasta, albeit, with poise.Cl

Ethan took another bite out of the chicken sandwich that she gave him, a satisfied smile dancing on his lips. For some reason, the boy managed to convince her to give him company. But she thought that it would be better to just stay put anyway rather than to aimlessly walk for the remaining minutes of the lunch break, looking for a secluded spot.“Why are you up here, anyway?” Claire asked. She then unwrapped the burrito that Ethan had given her in exchange for her sandwich. The familiar aroma told her that it was bought at the cafe across the campus. She had no idea why someone would give away a decent burrito for a cafeteria sandwich, but she was grateful for the lucky exchange.“Nothing”, he replied after swallowing. “I just feel like stepping away from the crowd today”“Cool”She did

“How did you get my number?”Then he laughed. In Claire’s memory, the familiar laughter brought warmth, but ten years later, it almost sounded frightening. She felt herself starting to shiver at the thought of being near her father— she grew to hate him more as each day passes, and she didn’t realize that until this moment.“It didn’t take long to convince your mother”She didn’t think that she could get even angrier than she already was, but she did, much to her surprise. She watched her father beat her mother senseless, but despite all that, her mother still loved him and a few buttered-up words from him can make her forget where her bruises and her scars came from.Claire hated that, too. She hated how much power a man has over her mother just because she loved him.

Claire pushed the cart while quickly reading the signs attached at the top of the bookshelves, indicating each section. As someone who has been working at the library for almost half a year now, she was expected to have memorized the entire layout of the library and navigate through them easily. But for some reason, she still had to rely on the signs most of the time. When she got to the history section, she grabbed the stack of history books from her cart and proceeded to arrange them on the shelves. The head librarian had assigned Katie to work at the counter today, so much to her dismay, and so she was stuck with shelving. After arranging her stack of history books, she glanced at her wristwatch. Autumn passes by quickly, and since it was undoubtedly her favorite season, she hated that. The leaves of the trees turning into different shades of rust, yellow and brown adorned the streets, and she loved the smell of Pumpkin Spice lattes from the coffee shop across the campus.Having been reminded of this, Claire then made a mental note to herself to pick up a cup for herself before going home.“Claire!”She looked up from examining the leaves on the ground to find her best friend Jess running towards her with a huge smile on her face. After class today, Jess told her that she was in a hurry and went ahead without her, so she was pleasantly surprised to see her.“Hey!”

Ever since they decided to go to the Halloween party, Jess has been stoked about the costumes, so she didn’t want to let her down by refusing to wear what she came up with, which turned out to be a Japanese-style maid costume. Jess, being a cute Asian-American, had no trouble looking good in it. “Yeah, of course, you do”, Jess replied as she adjusted her headpiece. “I wouldn’t choose this if you wouldn’t look good wearing it” Two hours ago, Jess came over to her house with a ginormous gym bag filled with clothes, accessories, and makeup, and ever since then, the two have been preparing for the party. Five minutes before 9 pm, Claire headed out. The playground that they agreed to meet at was actually in the neighborhood so it was a mere five-minute walk to get there. A block after, she realized that it was rather chilly tonight, and regretted not wearing a scarf, but she figured that it would be too late for her to go back to get one. The cold wind rushed by, causing a mini tornado of autumn leaves by her feet, and she hugged herself in an attempt to keep herself warm. When she arrived at the playground, five minutes later, it was deserted. She hopped over the chain that hung around the perimeter and settled into one of the swings. There were no other people around and cars rarely go through these streets so it was quiet, in a serene way rather than a terrifying one.“I’m not too early, aren’t I?” she mumbled to herself, craning her neck side to side in case she just didn’t spot Jay when she got there, but true enough, she was alone.

Ethan clutched the straps of his backpack as he panted, trying to steady his breath. They were in the middle of a two-hour hike to the top of the hill, and his head was pounding with a severe hangover. He knew that it was a bad idea to give in to Luke’s offer to ‘have fun’ last night. He promised himself to get it over with a couple of shots, but his plan had obviously failed. It was especially warm that day. The sun shone brightly through the trees and the birds chirped as the students chattered excitedly about the apparently breathtaking view at the end of the hike. But the brightness and the happy noises only made Ethan’s headache worse by the second. “Ugh”, he groaned in complaint. Greg, who was walking alongside him, chuckled and threw an arm over his shoulder. The latter was a little bit shorter than he was, and the act made him stumble.

As soon as the rest of the students arrived, they had done nothing but scurry around to run errands and make sure that all the events go as smoothly as planned— from arrival until dinner time. Claire could catch a glimpse of Ethan every now and then, but even during the breaks, she couldn’t find the time to talk to him. She had something important to say, but despite that, she didn’t want to do it the whim, seeing as she was busy. The atmosphere would be crucial. “Ugh”, Patrici

Every shift at the library was a workout for her since it meant she had to reshelve heavy books.Books were supposed to be arranged in an ascending order based on the numbers taped on their spines for easy location. And despite the weight of the stack that she had to arrange, she held it with an arm while her other hand was busy placing the books back onto the shelves. The last book in the heap had to be placed on the top shelf. The conference room was on the opposite hall where the cafeteria was, thus, she was literally going against a wave of bodies. As she concentrated on getting herself past the crowded corridor, a student suddenly bumped into her and she gasped in surprise as her textbooks flew to the floor. “Sorry!” Claire craned her neck to see the culprit running away while waving a hand over his shoulder. His attitude annoyed her but instead of calling him out, she sighed and bent down to pick up her stuff. She tried to pick up everything as fast as she could as she was in the middle of the hallway but unfortunately, she was
