“How did you get my number?”
Then he laughed. In Claire’s memory, the familiar laughter brought warmth, but ten years later, it almost sounded frightening. She felt herself starting to shiver at the thought of being near her father— she grew to hate him more as each day passes, and she didn’t realize that until this moment.
“It didn’t take long to convince your mother”
She didn’t think that she could get even angrier than she already was, but she did, much to her surprise. She watched her father beat her mother senseless, but despite all that, her mother still loved him and a few buttered-up words from him can make her forget where her bruises and her scars came from.
Claire hated that, too. She hated how much power a man has over her mother just because she loved him.
“You…” she mumbled, embracing the anger bubbling up inside her, threatening to burst. “If I ever see you near my mother again, I swear—“
“I know”, he cut her off. “I won’t. I just… want to see my daughter. And perhaps…”
“Perhaps what?”
“Visit my son’s grave, too”
“You dare?!” she finally burst, screaming into the mic of her phone. She didn’t want to wake her mother up who was currently sleeping in the room on the other end of the hall nor worry her best friend but she couldn’t help it. “You killed him!”
“I’m sorry. Look… I know there’s nothing I can do now but…”
Claire wanted to say more. She wanted to let him know how much hatred she had developed for him over the years, but she figured that she would be more at a loss if she wasted any second more of her time trying to do so.
She, undoubtedly, had imagined of this day— when her father would reach out to them— and even made up a script in her head of the things that she wanted to say. Everything was mentally written in bullets, tables, and charts. If she wanted to give him even a piece of her mind, it would take her more than a night.
“Don’t ever call me or my mother again”
And with that, she dropped the call, without even waiting for her father’s reply.
Before going back to her bedroom, she wiped her tears with her pajama sleeve, cleared her throat, and forced herself to wipe the frown off her face. The last thing she wanted was to worry Jessica.
“Claire?”
She closed the door and when she turned around to face her best friend, she met her brown eyes filled with concern. And that moment, she felt vulnerable. Jess knew that she was suffering at one glance and wordlessly raised her arms for a hug.
Claire ran to her and buried her face on her chest. A dam broke inside her and ten years’ worth of anguish tears ran down her cheeks.
“I’m here”, Jess softly mumbled in her hair as she patted her shoulder and rocked her back and forth like a baby in a cradle. “I’m here for you, Claire”
She continued to cry until her throat hurt and her eyes felt dry.
---
The school bell rang.
As usual, the classroom was then filled by the hustling of the students a split second later. The week of continuous tests was over and Claire could hear students either comparing grades, planning to celebrate, or sighing in relief. She personally liked taking tests since she would feel like she was being challenged to do better. But of course, she would never verbally admit to such.
“It’s over”
Claire looked up from arranging her books in her backpack to look at Jess standing in front of her desk, her usual goofy smile dancing on her lips.
“Did you do well?”
“I wouldn’t say I didn’t”, she replied, shrugging. “But I don’t think I did either”
Claire smiled. Standing up, she linked her arms with Jess’s before starting to head towards the door. “Where should we go today?”
“Oh”, Jess’s eyes widened in pleasant surprise and she craned her neck to look at her. “It’s Friday. You don’t have a tutorial session with Ethan today?”
“Nope”, she shook her head. “There isn’t really anything that we can go over today. We had exams all week after all”
Jess pumped a celebratory fist in the air. She read out her mental list of some cafés and restaurants that they could go to, which unfortunately wasn’t that long, as they walked with linked arms towards the building’s exit. Claire felt like Jess was trying to cheer her up as much as she could by being more energetic than usual. She hated herself a little for making her worry but was grateful for the sentiment anyway.
When they got to the bus stop, Claire spotted a familiar figure leaning against one of the posts. Although he tried to keep a low profile, only wearing a simple jacket and jeans combo, he still stood out among the crowd. Claire wasn’t sure if it was because of his aura or his designer brands-clad self that caught her eye so quickly.
“Oh, isn’t that Ethan?”
“Yeah”, she mumbled. “I don’t know why he’s here, though, when he has a car”
Claire wasn’t in the mood to interact with him. Having to spend a couple of hours alone with Ethan once a week was enough for her, so she looked away, hoping that he wouldn’t notice her.
But it was a futile attempt.
“Hey, Claire!”
She stopped in her tracks. Jess seemed to sense that she didn’t want to be noticed so she chuckled softly when they heard him call for her.
“He saw you”, she whispered. Jess then let go of her arm before pointing at the bench in the waiting shed. “I’ll be waiting for you there”
Claire hastily made up a plan in her head to use Jess as an escape route but now that she left without waiting for her reply, she was empty-handed. It would seem pathetic to call her friend back and then use her as an excuse to leave, later on, so having left with no choice, she turned around to face Ethan and sighed.
“Hey”, she greeted when Ethan approached her. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Jess staring at them with a huge smile on her face.
“Claire”, Ethan started to say, his smile growing wider by the second. She looked down at his hand and noticed that he was clutching a roll of papers. “Guess what?”
She hummed in response and looked up at him to meet his eyes. “What?”
“Ta-dah!”
Ethan raised his hand and suddenly she found herself face to face with his test papers. At such close proximity, she couldn’t read anything, so she took the papers and started to go through them. Her look of amusement must’ve been evident since she heard him mumble a few compliments to himself.
Ethan did a good job in every single test. He scored no lower than 75%, which was pretty impressive if one knew how he did during the mock tests that Claire would give him during their tutorial sessions every Friday.
“Impressive”, she said afterward, reaching out to hand the test papers back to him. “You did way better than I expected”
“That’s kinda mean”, Ethan replied before taking the test papers back and stuffing them into his back jean pocket. “But thank you. You helped me a lot”
“Yeah, sure I did”
“So…” Ethan started to say, yet again, showing off his dimpled smile that made her heart race. “Do you have plans? I was thinking that maybe I could treat you for a meal as a thank you”
“Umm actually”, she replied and glanced at Jess who was patiently waiting for her, sitting on the bench. “I have plans with Jess, my best friend”
Ethan followed her line of vision and true enough, he saw Jess happily waving at them. “Oh”
“I’m sorry, Ethan”
Claire felt bad since she saw how Ethan slowly dropped his smile. His oh sounded too disappointed in her ears as well. She figured that ever since receiving his first test result, he must’ve been looking forward to celebrating with her.
“I’ll make it up to you, I promise”
“Really?” Ethan asked, turning to face her again. His face lit up with expectation— eyes wide, brows raised, silly smile, and all. “You promise?”
“Yes yes”, she chuckled softly at his reaction and nodded in assurance. “I promise”
“Great!”
His smile widened again. He then placed his hand on her head and leaned down to her eye level. His face was so close that Claire could feel his breath on the tip of her nose. As if on cue, her pulse quickened and pounded against her ribcage, and her face started to get warmer as blood rushed to her cheeks. He held her gaze so she was left frozen on the spot, drowning in Ethan’s green eyes.
She attempted to protest but when she opened her mouth, her throat felt dry that all she could muster was a quiet incoherent mumble. They were at a bus stop and she could feel the onlookers’ stares burning right through her. The thought made her feel self-conscious, causing her to blush more.
The fact that Ethan could casually do these things and not feel flustered nor embarrassed irritated her.
“Tomorrow, I’ll pick you up”, he whispered. “It’s a date”
With that, he dropped his hand and left, waving his roll of papers casually over his shoulder.
Claire pushed the cart while quickly reading the signs attached at the top of the bookshelves, indicating each section. As someone who has been working at the library for almost half a year now, she was expected to have memorized the entire layout of the library and navigate through them easily. But for some reason, she still had to rely on the signs most of the time. When she got to the history section, she grabbed the stack of history books from her cart and proceeded to arrange them on the shelves. The head librarian had assigned Katie to work at the counter today, so much to her dismay, and so she was stuck with shelving. After arranging her stack of history books, she glanced at her wristwatch. Claire had an hour left before her shift is over.“Claire”She turned to look at Katie, waving at her from the counter. The l
Claire yawned as she made her way to the exit of the school building. The cold wind rushed past and she tightened her scarf around her neck. Autumn passes by quickly, and since it was undoubtedly her favorite season, she hated that. The leaves of the trees turning into different shades of rust, yellow and brown adorned the streets, and she loved the smell of Pumpkin Spice lattes from the coffee shop across the campus.Having been reminded of this, Claire then made a mental note to herself to pick up a cup for herself before going home.“Claire!”She looked up from examining the leaves on the ground to find her best friend Jess running towards her with a huge smile on her face. After class today, Jess told her that she was in a hurry and went ahead without her, so she was pleasantly surprised to see her.“Hey!”
“Do I really look okay in this costume?” Claire self-consciously tugged at the hem of her skirt as it was a lot shorter than what she was comfortable wearing. Ever since they decided to go to the Halloween party, Jess has been stoked about the costumes, so she didn’t want to let her down by refusing to wear what she came up with, which turned out to be a Japanese-style maid costume. Jess, being a cute Asian-American, had no trouble looking good in it. “Yeah, of course, you do”, Jess replied as she adjusted her headpiece. “I wouldn’t choose this if you wouldn’t look good wearing it” Two hours ago, Jess came over to her house with a ginormous gym bag filled with clothes, accessories, and makeup, and ever since then, the two have been preparing for the party. She was too excited that Claire didn’t have even a second of rest after a d
“How was the party?”Claire remained silent and continued to sip on her iced coffee. After the incident with Ethan in the backyard, she tried to act as how she normally would while casually ignoring him. Ethan might've found it amusing but she wasn't delighted at all. Worse, she wanted to slap herself for not disliking the fact that he touched her.Luckily, Jess was more than happy to answer.“It was fun!” she interjected, raising her arms for more effect. “Claire got drunk and I got to flirt with a guy!”“Wait”, Claire interrupted, abandoning her coffee. Upon hearing Jess, her ears perked up and her eyes went wide in shock. “What guy?”She tilted her head in confusion and looked at the ceiling, trying to remember as much as she could about last night’s events, which proved to be hard. After Ethan’s ridiculous antic, she couldn’t focus at all and kept on drinking to distr
Five minutes before 9 pm, Claire headed out. The playground that they agreed to meet at was actually in the neighborhood so it was a mere five-minute walk to get there. A block after, she realized that it was rather chilly tonight, and regretted not wearing a scarf, but she figured that it would be too late for her to go back to get one. The cold wind rushed by, causing a mini tornado of autumn leaves by her feet, and she hugged herself in an attempt to keep herself warm. When she arrived at the playground, five minutes later, it was deserted. She hopped over the chain that hung around the perimeter and settled into one of the swings. There were no other people around and cars rarely go through these streets so it was quiet, in a serene way rather than a terrifying one.“I’m not too early, aren’t I?” she mumbled to herself, craning her neck side to side in case she just didn’t spot Jay when she got there, but true enough, she was alone.
The school bell rang, signaling the end of the last period. As the students hurried towards the corridors, happily chatting along with their peers, Claire immediately slammed her forehead into her desk and she was tempted to sleep right then and there. Due to the unexpected turn of events on the previous night, she couldn’t sleep at all.“Yo”, she heard Jess say while poking her head with her index fingers. “Why so glum-glum, Claire?”“I just need a nap”, she groaned, closing her eyes. “You can go ahead without me”“A nap? Here?”“Yeah, I don’t really care”Jess fell silent but Claire could tell that she was still there, contemplating whether to leave her alone or not. She wasn’t able to tell her anything yet since she was still confused and didn’t really know how to do so. Even so, Jess knew that something was up and she had been obviously trying so har
The weekend came and ever since then, Ethan has been waiting outside her last period classroom and insisting to drive her home. Although the ‘little incident’ last Monday, as she called it, never happened again nor was brought up in their conversations, Claire still felt a little bit awkward with him and she even sometimes caught herself staring at his lips. Fortunately, Ethan wasn’t acting out of the ordinary so it was easier for her to shrug it off.“Brian”, she called out as she gestured towards the stack of books left unattended on a nearby table. “Can you go and reshelve those?”The guy paused from arranging the borrower’s cards and nodded at her before heading towards the table to do as she instructed.Today, Claire was in charge of check-out counter duty since Katie had family plans for Thanksgiving and couldn’t come. The head librarian did assign another part-timer to work with her in the meantime, th
“Soooo?”Claire suppressed a smile before closing the bedroom door behind her and leaning against it. She looked at Jess who was smiling expectantly at her while sitting cross-legged on the bed and hugging a pillow. A second after locking eyes with Jess, Claire burst into fits of laughter then ran to her bed to grab a pillow for herself and bury her face there, hiding her red cheeks.“You sly dog”, she heard Jess say while hitting her repeatedly at the back with a pillow. “I really had no idea until Jay asked me to help him have some time alone with you!”“I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” she exclaimed and rolled over to shield herself from Jess’s pillow attacks and look up at her. “He’s your cousin so I was hesitating”“You suck”, Jess laughed. “But looking back, I think I see it now. I can’t believe I missed that”“Well, we talked about i
For the rest of the week, Claire didn’t really have enough energy to worry about Ethan. She was swamped with her responsibilities at school and her college applications. She was also pressured more than usual to do well during the exams while still helping Jess and Greg study after their classes, but this time, in preparation for their university entrance exams. She was so busy that once she got home, she would barely have enough time to do her homework before knocking out on her bed.“Claire! Don’t forget to eat dinner, okay?!” she heard her mother yell from the living room. “Or call Jess over if you want!”Claire looked up from jotting down notes on the margins of her textbook. “Yes, mom!”As usual, her mother was going o
“You got this part wrong, Greg”, Claire stated as she pointed at his notebook with the tip of her pencil. Then she leaned in a little bit closer to encircle the incorrect part. “Try to figure out what went wrong here”Greg groaned in complaint but he erased his answers anyway before starting to redo everything from the beginning. “This is so annoying. I’ve been answering the same problem for the past fifteen minutes”“That’s because you’ve been sneaking peeks at the basketball practice outside the window for the past fifteen minutes as well”, Jess retorted. Her boyfriend childishly stuck out his tongue at her in reply.Claire shook her head at them but a small smile was playing on her lips anyway. Greg was indeed the perfect match for Jess’s per
Jess groaned in frustration as she slumped into her chair. Her laptop sat on her desk in front of her, the screen showing an empty document page. For the past half hour, she had been trying to finish writing her application letter for university admission, but to no avail. Claire looked up from reading her book and chuckled. “Still nothing, huh?” “Yeah”, she nodded as she kicked to turn her swivel chair around. “Tell me how’d you do it” “Just tell them why you want to enroll in their university, that’s all”, Claire replied, setting down her book. She was sitting on Jess’s bed while her friend agonized over an unfinished letter. “You can also look up templates on the internet if you’re really having trouble” “I already did! But still nothing…”
Ethan clutched the straps of his backpack as he panted, trying to steady his breath. They were in the middle of a two-hour hike to the top of the hill, and his head was pounding with a severe hangover. He knew that it was a bad idea to give in to Luke’s offer to ‘have fun’ last night. He promised himself to get it over with a couple of shots, but his plan had obviously failed. It was especially warm that day. The sun shone brightly through the trees and the birds chirped as the students chattered excitedly about the apparently breathtaking view at the end of the hike. But the brightness and the happy noises only made Ethan’s headache worse by the second. “Ugh”, he groaned in complaint. Greg, who was walking alongside him, chuckled and threw an arm over his shoulder. The latter was a little bit shorter than he was, and the act made him stumble.
“We need more chairs here!” “There’s not enough energy drinks for everybody!” “Can someone dry these towels?!” The long-awaited camp was here. The committee had been in the venue a few hours before the buses arrived to make the final preparations. As soon as the rest of the students arrived, they had done nothing but scurry around to run errands and make sure that all the events go as smoothly as planned— from arrival until dinner time. Claire could catch a glimpse of Ethan every now and then, but even during the breaks, she couldn’t find the time to talk to him. She had something important to say, but despite that, she didn’t want to do it the whim, seeing as she was busy. The atmosphere would be crucial. “Ugh”, Patrici
“Bye!”Claire waved her hand as she watched Jess run towards her boyfriend, Greg, who was waiting by his parked car. The sun was already setting since the committee meetings were getting longer and longer as the camp nears, but impressively enough, Greg decided to give Jess a ride home as much as he could. He also offered to drop Claire off every time, but she would always make excuses like running errands or staying behind to finish extra work just so she wouldn’t get in the way of the two.As Greg pulled out of the parking lot, Claire smiled as Jess continued to wave at her through the open window until the vehicle turned to the highway and disappeared from her line of sight. Stretching her arms and sighing in relief, she started to walk towards the bus stop.It was late so she was expecting the
“I think we can wrap it up here”Claire sighed in relief before dropping her pen and stretching out her arms. The camp was finally coming up, and the committee has been working harder than ever to finalize everything. It was fortunate that they never had to revise their draft plan outlines since even the principal himself was being lenient— as long as they stick to the allocated budget, that is.“Justin”, Patricia called out, and the boy perked up almost immediately in response. “Make a follow-up call on the t-shirts, don’t forget”Justin nodded. “Will do”She looked at her notebook. Her meeting notes were usually organized and neat, but because of the incident at the library last weekend, she couldn’t seem to focus at all. Her mind automatically drifted to the memory of kissing Ethan which was then immediately followed by a strong feeling of guilt. For the past couple of days, she h
Claire pushed the cart down the aisle as her eyes quickly scanned the signs attached on top of each shelf. She mumbled ‘history’ over and over under her breath as if the enchantment would help her get to the history aisle faster. After arriving at the row of shelves containing history books, she parked the cart at the side.“Ugh”, she groaned as she carried the stack of books. Every shift at the library was a workout for her since it meant she had to reshelve heavy books.Books were supposed to be arranged in an ascending order based on the numbers taped on their spines for easy location. And despite the weight of the stack that she had to arrange, she held it with an arm while her other hand was busy placing the books back onto the shelves. The last book in the heap had to be placed on the top shelf. So, of course, being the petite girl that she was, she had to use one of the footstools that were normally scattered within the area. She t
Claire clutched her textbooks against her chest as she stepped out to the school corridor. The bell rang a couple of minutes ago, signaling the end of the morning classes and she was supposed to have lunch that day with the committee as the trip was right around the corner. She cursed under her breath as she struggled to push her way through the hallway. The conference room was on the opposite hall where the cafeteria was, thus, she was literally going against a wave of bodies. As she concentrated on getting herself past the crowded corridor, a student suddenly bumped into her and she gasped in surprise as her textbooks flew to the floor. “Sorry!” Claire craned her neck to see the culprit running away while waving a hand over his shoulder. His attitude annoyed her but instead of calling him out, she sighed and bent down to pick up her stuff. She tried to pick up everything as fast as she could as she was in the middle of the hallway but unfortunately, she was
