Chapter 2

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah listened to the conversation outside the study, her eyes downcast.

During her years as James’s wife, she had given everything to her mother-in-law and sister-in-law Lucy. When Lucy had her car accident, Sarah had stayed at the hospital for days. She'd always shown nothing but respect and care for Mrs. Chancer. Yet it seemed no amount of devotion could change how the Chancer family saw her.

Shortly after, Scarlett Larson called, her voice tired, "Sasa, are you sure you won't come? You used to love hunting outdoors, and you'd get to race cars too."

Sarah froze. Memories she'd buried deep came flooding back. Before marrying James, she'd loved hunting, racing cars, and good wine. Then she met James at the Larson estate and fell head over heels. After falling for him, she learned through others that James preferred gentle, trad wife. So she'd gradually given up everything she loved.

Three years had passed, and she'd almost forgotten who she used to be.

On the other end of the line, Scarlett continued rambling, "Sasa, if you don't want James to know, you can keep it from him. There's no need to give up everything for a man. Besides, James..."

"We're getting divorced," Sarah cut her off quietly.

Scarlett seemed stunned, then took a deep breath, "Did you finally come to your senses, or did James lose his mind?"

Sarah gave a small laugh, "He asked for it. I agreed."

Scarlett was speechless, thinking James must be blind. The Chancers should have counted their lucky stars to have someone like Sarah, and now they were divorcing?

"Congratulations, babe!" Scarlett's voice turned excited. "I'll pick you up soon. We should celebrate you finally seeing clearly."

Sarah hung up with a bitter smile. She looked around the master bedroom, which showed no signs of being shared by a couple. After three years of marriage, it might as well have belonged to a single person.

It really was time to end this.

Sarah went to the guest room to pack her things. She didn't have many clothes - after marriage, she'd stopped caring about her appearance - so packing didn't take long.

She removed her wedding ring and placed it on the bedside table, her eyes reflecting a mixture of regret and relief.

As she pulled her suitcase toward the door, she passed through the living room. She thought she should at least say goodbye to her former mother-in-law, but Lucy's bitter voice cut in first.

"Someone is finally leaving. Know your place - hanging around our family all these years just for money. You're nothing but a sparrow trying to fly with the eagles…”

Sarah stopped in her tracks and without hesitation, grabbed the glass of water from the table and threw it in Lucy's face.

Drenched from head to toe, Lucy exploded, "Sarah, have you lost your mind? How dare you..."

Sarah calmly wiped the water droplets from her fingers and replied coolly, "I dare plenty. I might be a sparrow, but I still have claws.”

Lucy stood there speechless, clearly shocked that this was the same Sarah everyone had pushed around.

Sarah found Lucy's surprise amusing. For three years, no matter how harsh Lucy and Mrs. Chancer had been, she'd done everything perfectly to please them without complaint. She'd always been gentle and patient, quietly enduring their bitter words and anger.

They'd forgotten that before all this, Sarah had been wild and free - drinking, fighting, and living life on her own terms.

She'd put up with enough. No more.

Sarah let out a soft chuckle.

Sarah left the Chancer mansion without looking back, wheeling her suitcase behind her. Outside, she found Scarlett leaning out of her car window, blowing her a playful kiss. "Get in, baby! Time to celebrate!"Though Scarlett called it a celebration, knowing Sarah was freshly divorced and likely down, she just took her to a music-themed restaurant. When she heard James's reason for the divorce, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff, "Charlotte Garnett again? What's so special about her that James is this obsessed?"Sarah stirred her coffee listlessly. "No idea..."She'd never actually met James's dream woman. Charlotte had already left for abroad when Sarah first met James. She'd only heard that Charlotte was gentle, accomplished, and understanding. When James had fought with his grandfather over her, Charlotte had been mature enough to convince James to let it go - which had led to Sarah's arranged marriage with James.Seeing Sarah's reluctance to discuss it further, Scarlett changed th

Sarah stopped in her tracks. Her expression remained calm, but she didn't take Charlotte's offered hand.As Charlotte's smile faltered, James stepped in to ease the tension, "Grandfather heard about us,” he said in a deep and restrained voice. “He wants you to join us for dinner tonight. Your phone was off, so I came to get you.""I see." Sarah checked her phone - it was indeed dead. She nodded. "I'll charge it and join you later."The message was clear- she wouldn't be going with them.James frowned. "I can wait while you-""No need," Sarah cut him off with a smile. "I'll make my own way there."When he fell silent, Sarah glanced at Charlotte. "And tomorrow at nine, if you're free, let's get the divorce papers finalized."For some reason, James felt unsettled. "Why the rush?"Sarah nodded firmly. “Cause it's urgent."James was taken aback, his expression darkening as he led Charlotte away. After a few steps, Charlotte whispered something intimately to James, then turned back

Lost in his thoughts, James felt a warm hand on his. He turned to see Charlotte looking at him with concern. "Are you feeling okay? Would you like some soup?"James shook his head. After greeting Richard, Sarah quietly took her seat, pointedly ignoring their interaction.Richard let out a scoff of disgust.Dinner at the Chancers' was traditionally eaten in silence. Sarah had little appetite but picked at her food to be polite. After dinner, Richard held her back. "I've heard about you and James. Don't worry, Sarah. You're the only daughter-in-law this family recognizes."He cast a cold look at Charlotte and James, their faces stiffening at his words. "If anyone should leave this family, it should be the homewrecker and this excuse for a man!"Sarah shifted uncomfortably.James's jaw tightened. Beside him, Charlotte clutched his hand, her eyes filling with tears, looking every bit the victim.Richard ignored them both, drumming his fingers on the table with a sigh. "Your father

Richard slammed his teacup down, his voice heavy with disappointment. "Since the day she joined this family, your mother has done nothing but tear her down. Every time she got sick, she had to handle it alone. Whenever Lucy wanted the latest designer bag or jewelry, Sarah was the one footing the bill. Night after night, she'd wait up for you, keeping your dinner warm. And that time you made yourself sick pining over Charlotte? Sarah spent hours making you homemade soup, burning her hands raw in the process."He sighed deeply. "Even when she lost her father and lived with the Larsons, she never had to do any of that. James, Sarah gave you everything. Charlotte brings you one bowl of soup, and suddenly she's the perfect woman?"James's fists clenched as he listened, his eyes darkening like storm clouds.Sarah knew nothing of this conversation. For once, she slept well that night. The next morning at eight-thirty, she called James about finalizing the divorce, "Mr. Chancer, if you're

Sarah's eyelashes fluttered as she considered Professor Wells's words. If she hadn't married James, she would've become a practicing therapist by now. Even though her knowledge was still intact, could she really return to her field after all these years?Professor Wells sensed her hesitation. "There's no rush," he said kindly. "But if you're interested, I'm here to help.""Thank you, Professor." Sarah felt a wave of warmth. Despite her absence these past years, he still cared about his former student. After discussing his health and chatting for a while longer, he even invited her to stay for lunch. It was late afternoon by the time she left. With tomorrow's hunting trip in mind, she picked up her prepared gear and clothing. The next morning, Scarlett picked her up and drove them to the mountain lodge. They arrived early, finding only a few unfamiliar faces. Since the Reynolds family was hosting the event, it had drawn quite a mixed crowd. Sarah wasn't in the mood for small talk,

Taking the rifle from Zachary, Sarah couldn't help but note how striking he was. After Zachary changed and everyone got their gear, the instructors directed the hunters to their positions. Many guests who'd come just to catch a glimpse of Zachary Reynolds stayed back at camp to watch, including James and Charlotte. The Reynolds family had provided binoculars, refreshments, and even kept a small deer sanctuary nearby for entertainment. Still, most spectators were focused on the hunt, peering through their binoculars.James, remembering Sarah's earlier words, picked up a pair. The hunting ground opened into a vast field. Against the crisp morning sky, Sarah sat astride her horse as the wind whipped past her. She felt a surge of excitement, as if something long dormant inside her had finally awakened. Her eyes sparkled with life - the same spirited look she'd had in her younger days.Lowering his binoculars, James fell into a brooding silence. He'd never imagined that the quiet, unre

Sarah looked up to find a handsome man with bright, playful eyes. Though striking, his manner was gentle, with a boyish charm when he smiled.Sarah didn't recognize him, and Scarlett looked equally puzzled.Steven Miller made himself right at home, setting down the prepared goose with a friendly smile. "I'm Steven, Mr. Reynolds' chef. He asked me to prepare your goose specially for you ladies. Please, try some."Chef? Sarah raised an eyebrow. What chef wears a watch worth hundreds of thousands?"Steven," Scarlett blurted out, "do all of Mr. Reynolds' chefs wear such expensive things?"Steven grinned as he served them the goose. "Let's just say Mr. Reynolds pays well."Both women couldn't help but laugh.Their laughter carried over to where James sat, stirring something dark in his chest. From his angle, he could see Sarah delicately picking at her food, smiling as she listened intently to the handsome man beside her, her eyes sparkling.Suddenly, his own food turned tasteless i

The barbecue lasted well into the afternoon, with drinks flowing and laughter filling the air, creating the kind of warmth that makes strangers feel like old friends.Sarah slipped away during the festivities to claim her prize, accompanied by a staff member. As the winner, she had her choice of either the horse she'd ridden or any other animal from the estate's collection. Though drawn to the horses, she chose a young deer instead, believing horses weren't meant to be kept as pets.As she finished making her choice, a security guard approached. "Miss Sanders? Mr. Reynolds would like a word."There was only one Reynolds who commanded that kind of respect - Zachary Reynolds.Upstairs, she found him lounging by the window while Steven mixed drinks, purple liquid catching the light as ice clinked against crystal.Steven's eyes sparkled with mischief when he saw her. “You must be special - boss never shares his private collection with anyone."He wasn't even trying to hide what he wa

He studied Mia closely - her condition was clearly very poor, anyone could see that.So was this connected to Vivian? He couldn't be certain, but he knew there was no one else it could be.Melvin pulled some documents from his bag and handed them to her. "See for yourself."What's this?Sarah opened the file - it was the investigation report on Tina Mendes.Tina Mendes, nineteen years old, normally gentle and quiet - everyone's idea of the "perfect daughter."But she noticed the neighbor's comments: "Well, Tina was a good kid, just unlucky to have such a mother! In this blood-red world, she could almost smell the thick scent of iron, mingled with the lingering stench of something burning in the air. Amid this suffocating despair, a gentle hand rested on her shoulder. "Mia?" Who was calling her? Mia’s gaze was lost in a haze of confusion and agony. She could no longer see the world clearly, only the overwhelming, suffocating red that consumed everything. But that voice—it was warm and familiar. It was someone she trusted. Someone she relied on even more than her own brother. No, that wasn't right. This wasn’t just trust. It was an instinctive dependence, forged in the depths of terror. A reliance born from being trapped in the same abyss. Sarah? She turned her dazed eyes in the direction of the voice. And in the midst of the blood-drenched world, a figure appeared. A real, living person. Someone who wasn’t red. Someone who looked… normal. "Sarah…" she murmured. Sarah Sanders seemed to sense the weight of Mia’

Professor Wells furrowed his brows slightly. “Mrs. Mendes, we understand your grief, and the university is willing to provide some form of compensation for Tina Mendes’ passing. However, demanding one million is simply not possible. If you continue disrupting the school’s order at the main gate, we will have no choice but to involve the police.” Though both Professor Wells and Dean Larson appeared calm and composed, their words left no room for negotiation. For once, Mrs. Mendes fell silent, glaring at them viciously. “Fine! Call the police then!” Professor Wells didn’t hesitate—he pulled out his phone and started dialing. But just as he pressed the second digit, his phone was suddenly snatched away. “You really dare? Do you think there’s no law in this country?” she shrieked. On the other side, Dean Larson calmly raised his own phone, turning the screen toward her so she could see the number he was dialing. “Calling now—Adams University main gate. Someone is deliberatel

For a moment, Mrs. Mendes was stunned, as if she hadn’t expected Dean Larson to apologize so decisively. She clutched the black-and-white photo of her daughter tightly, her hands trembling slightly. Her expression grew complicated—this apology left her without an excuse to continue making a scene. Her face was pale. “It wasn’t you who killed my daughter—it was Sarah Sanders! Why isn’t she the one apologizing?”“Miss Sanders has already been suspended and is staying at home,” Professor Wells explained calmly. “There is no conclusive evidence proving that Miss Sanders was responsible for Tina Mendes’ death. The current suspension is only a temporary measure due to the media pressure at the school gates—it’s for Miss Sanders’ safety.”By stating this, he was drawing a clear line—if the media twisted the narrative, it would be on them.At this point, with Dean Larson’s apology, Mrs. Mendes had been pushed into a corner. She hesitated, her voice faltering. “Sarah Sanders killed my dau

Professor Wells nodded. "Not just Mrs. Mendes—the reporters are still holding their ground too."Dean Larson let out a cold chuckle. "They’re certainly persistent."Professor Wells sighed. "It’s not surprising. This is Adams University, a top institution with a century of prestige. The school has never had a scandal like this, and now that they’ve found an opening, they won’t let go easily."He paused before adding, "But it’s not just about the university. You know as well as I do—Sarah has a complicated background. People are just waiting to find something they can use against her. And now, with Mia suddenly having a breakdown right in front of the reporters… They’re practically salivating over this.""I know," Dean Larson said, cutting him off.Professor Wells hesitated before continuing, "But we can’t let this go on any longer. The board of trustees has already caught wind of it, and they want immediate action."Dean Larson’s expression darkened. "The board? Hah. Nothing ever

"A cloned license plate?" Zachary's mind stirred. For some reason, his thoughts drifted back to three years ago—another van, just like this one, had appeared, and that incident had left Mia with deep, irreparable psychological trauma. The assistant nodded respectfully. "Yes, sir. A cloned plate. There’s no way to trace it."Sarah sat beside Mia, watching her closely. "Hiring Miss Sanders as Mia's psychologist was my decision. I trust her ability. Do you have a problem with that?" Zachary’s voice was sharp, his patience wearing thin. Seeing Mia in this state, he had no energy for pleasantries with Vivian. His tone softened slightly, but his words carried an unmistakable weight. "Vivian, let me put it this way. Suppose I walk down a road and trip over a pit. Maybe I consider filling it, but for one reason or another, I don’t. But if I walk that road again, and that same pit still trips me up… I won’t just fill it. I’ll dig it wide open. I’ll clear out every rotten branch, every piece of decay lurking inside, and only then will I bury it for good." Vivian swallowed hard. "I… don’t know what you’re trying to say." "You don’t have to understand. Just remember it." The car soon pulled up in front of the Sanders’ residence. Zachary’s assistant got out and knocked on the door while Zachary immediately called Sarah. "Mia’s having an epi

Whether Mia’s condition had anything to do with Sarah or not, one fact was undeniable—despite undergoing treatment for so long, she was still not cured. Mia had suffered multiple episodes in the past, though the exact reasons remained unknown. However, most people believed that a patient undergoing treatment shouldn’t be having frequent relapses—especially not one as severe as this, and definitely not in front of a crowd. Mia’s terrified screams echoed through the air, her expression one of pure horror. Even some of the most seasoned reporters, used to witnessing intense and dramatic scenes, felt a chill run down their spines as they watched her. Mrs. Mendes desperately tried to calm Mia down, speaking softly and attempting to console her, but nothing worked. Meanwhile, at Reynolds Corporation, Zachary was in the middle of an important meeting, completely unaware of the chaos unfolding outside Adams University. His assistant, clearly flustered, burst into the conferen

Mia's mouth fell open in disbelief, her body wracked with uncontrollable tremors. The woman's screams had not stopped. She sobbed until she was gasping for air, but the men had no intention of letting her go. The torture continued. Mia's entire body convulsed, the sounds of crackling flesh from the fire filling the room with an eerie, sickening noise. The grotesque popping and hissing made her wish she could lose consciousness on the spot. But the more she wanted to faint, the clearer her mind became. Her vision was swallowed by red. Everything— her entire world—was drenched in red. She could no longer see any other color. "Help me! Help me! They're monsters! Monsters!" she shrieked, her voice breaking into hysterical screams. The man watched her reaction with satisfaction. With a casual wave of his hand, the two men behind him dragged the blood-soaked woman’s lifeless body away, leaving only him and Mia in the room. But Mia was no longer herself. Her ey
