Chapter 6

Author: Summer Knowles
Richard slammed his teacup down, his voice heavy with disappointment. "Since the day she joined this family, your mother has done nothing but tear her down. Every time she got sick, she had to handle it alone. Whenever Lucy wanted the latest designer bag or jewelry, Sarah was the one footing the bill. Night after night, she'd wait up for you, keeping your dinner warm. And that time you made yourself sick pining over Charlotte? Sarah spent hours making you homemade soup, burning her hands raw in the process."

He sighed deeply. "Even when she lost her father and lived with the Larsons, she never had to do any of that. James, Sarah gave you everything. Charlotte brings you one bowl of soup, and suddenly she's the perfect woman?"

James's fists clenched as he listened, his eyes darkening like storm clouds.

Sarah knew nothing of this conversation. For once, she slept well that night.

The next morning at eight-thirty, she called James about finalizing the divorce, "Mr. Chancer, if you're available, could you meet me at the courthouse at nine? I’ll be waiting outside."

"I have a meeting," James replied flatly. "Let's handle it another day."

He hung up before she could respond.

Sarah stood there, stunned. She distinctly remembered reminding him yesterday.

Important people, busy schedules. After a moment's hesitation, she decided not to call back. The great Mr. Chancer could sort it out when he had time.

On her way back, she remembered Scarlett mentioning Professor Wells's condition and decided to give him a call about visiting.

At the Wells residence, the housekeeper led Sarah to the study.

Before she could enter, she heard Professor Wells speaking, "Zac, regarding your sister's case, I wish I could help. But psychological treatment requires consistency, and in my current condition, I'm afraid I'd do more harm than good."

Sarah paused as a deep, gentle voice replied, "Your health comes first. If you could recommend someone suitable, I'd be grateful."

Just as Professor Wells nodded, the housekeeper knocked and opened the door. "Sir, Miss Sanders is here."

"Sarah!" Professor Wells brightened. "Come in!"

Sarah looked up, finally seeing the man who'd been speaking. Her breath caught.

He had the kind of presence that filled a room - classically handsome with an air of quiet authority. His chiseled features and enigmatic blue eyes conveyed both sophistication and an underlying intensity. Even standing casually in the corner, he drew attention while appearing completely at ease, like an expertly placed piece of art.

Noting her arrival, he smoothly excused himself, "I'll visit another time."

Sarah's interest was piqued, though she had already guessed his identity.

Sure enough, she heard Professor Wells speaking softly, "It's a difficult situation for the Reynolds. If his sister's condition doesn't improve..."

Just as she thought. Zachary Reynolds, the well known third son of the Reynolds Empire.

The Reynolds family dominated the real estate market on the East Coast, their recent meteoric rise attributed to their CEO, Zachary. The business world buzzed with stories of his brilliance and ruthless deal-making, though he carefully avoided the spotlight. Everyone wanted to know more about the man behind the success.

Sarah hadn't expected to run into him here. She remembered Scarlett mentioning he'd be at tomorrow's hunting event. Looking at him, he seemed an unlikely participant in such activities.

Meanwhile, Professor Wells, hearing about her divorce, felt a mix of emotions. Sarah had been his star student in college before marrying young and abandoning her studies in psychology. He'd always regretted that. Seeing her now, divorced but unbroken, brought him relief.

"You were my most promising psychology student," he said. "If not for the interruption, you might have made significant contributions to the field. Now that you have time, have you considered returning to psychology?"

When she spoke to someone in a wheelchair, she would lower herself to one knee, offering the microphone with grace.Clips like these had been edited together by her fans and posted online, racking up millions of views.Of course, that wasn’t all. When faced with someone malicious, she could turn cold and sharp. She was no fragile “angelic sweetheart” like the internet imagined. Her popularity was massive for a reason.Sarah felt a headache coming on.How was she supposed to deal with someone like this?---Soon it was time to meet Zachary. She didn’t bother with makeup—just tied her hair into a loose ponytail, threw on casual clothes, and headed downstairs.Zachary was already waiting, leaning against his car. When he saw her, he immediately crushed out his cigarette, though the faint smoke lingered on him.“Let’s go.”He opened the door for her, helped her in, and even buckled her seatbelt.Sarah leaned back. The mix of cedar and tobacco on him wasn’t unpleasant.---On the

Zachary’s eyes dimmed. He could do so much for Sarah, but that one word—thank you—was the only thing he couldn’t bear to hear. It made them feel distant, formal, like strangers.“Don’t say those two words to me again,” he said quietly, hurt in his voice.Sarah frowned. What was he doing now?“Sarah, between us—”“Steven,” she cut him off quickly, her pulse tightening, “did you figure out anything from the flash drive?”She didn’t want to hear whatever Zachary was about to say.But seeing the wounded look in his eyes made something inside her… shift.Something she didn’t want shifting.Steven jumped in. “Not yet. I’ve been focused on the phone numbers. As for the flash drive, I tried, but it’s protected by a self-destruct program. If I push harder, it might wipe itself. I’m not taking the risk.”“I understand.”---They headed downstairs together.Melvin immediately slipped into the car, giving them space. Sarah moved to get in too, but Zachary stepped in front of her.“What

She tried to search her memory, but realized her recollection of those four years was frozen in one place—her entanglement with Zachary.During that period, she had spent nearly all her time with him.Everything else had faded. The realization left her frustrated and guilty. She turned toward Melvin, hoping he might remember something, anything. But after studying the photo, Melvin shook his head. “I’ve never seen this woman in front of Uncle David. Not once.”Sarah lowered her eyes, pressing her lips together before saying quietly, “I want to meet her. I need to see Mindy Hicks in person.”At thirty-seven, the actress looked no older than twenty-five. No trace of age touched her face. Her beauty was undeniable, more striking than anyone Sarah had ever met.Suddenly Melvin spoke up. “Sarah… doesn’t she look like your mother?”Her mother?Sarah’s pupils contracted sharply. She stared at the photo again. Her memories of her mother were faint, but she still remembered warm hands

News spread through the business departments and management floors almost instantly. And of course, the gossip followed.A few employees took a break together, chatting over tea, repeating every rumor they had seen online—whether true or not—with dramatic flair.Charlotte, who had just arrived at the office for the first time in ages, happened to walk past just as one of the women said, “Honestly, our CEO’s daughter never learned to be content. She already has a kid and still can’t stay in line. No wonder he divorced her.”The words made Charlotte’s blood run cold. She stepped forward in one sharp stride, stopping behind them with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Sounds like you’re having a great time. Want to hear something even funnier? I’ve got plenty of stories.”“Miss Garnett! We didn’t mean anything by it. Please don’t be upset. We’ll get back to work right now.”The group scattered like startled birds, disappearing down the hallway. They had only been repeating what w

Mrs. Garnett stiffened with worry the moment she heard the news. Her carefully maintained face tightened with genuine concern. “She didn’t eat? That’s not okay. Warm the food again and give it to me—I’ll take it to her myself.”The housekeeper practically sighed with relief. Miss Charlotte had been unpredictable these past few days—sometimes throwing things, sometimes shutting down entirely. The housekeeper was terrified of getting caught in one of her outbursts. She carefully handed the tray to Mrs. Garnett and quickly returned to her chores.Mrs. Garnett went upstairs and stopped at Charlotte’s bedroom door. She knocked. No response. With a frown, she pulled out the spare key and let herself in.The room was dim and silent.“Charlotte, honey, it’s Mom,” she called softly. “The housekeeper said you didn’t eat. I’m worried about you.”From beneath the blankets, Charlotte slowly lifted her head. It took her a long moment to speak. When she did, her voice was hoarse. “Just… leave t
