Chapter 6

Author: Summer Knowles
Richard slammed his teacup down, his voice heavy with disappointment. "Since the day she joined this family, your mother has done nothing but tear her down. Every time she got sick, she had to handle it alone. Whenever Lucy wanted the latest designer bag or jewelry, Sarah was the one footing the bill. Night after night, she'd wait up for you, keeping your dinner warm. And that time you made yourself sick pining over Charlotte? Sarah spent hours making you homemade soup, burning her hands raw in the process."

He sighed deeply. "Even when she lost her father and lived with the Larsons, she never had to do any of that. James, Sarah gave you everything. Charlotte brings you one bowl of soup, and suddenly she's the perfect woman?"

James's fists clenched as he listened, his eyes darkening like storm clouds.

Sarah knew nothing of this conversation. For once, she slept well that night.

The next morning at eight-thirty, she called James about finalizing the divorce, "Mr. Chancer, if you're available, could you meet me at the courthouse at nine? I’ll be waiting outside."

"I have a meeting," James replied flatly. "Let's handle it another day."

He hung up before she could respond.

Sarah stood there, stunned. She distinctly remembered reminding him yesterday.

Important people, busy schedules. After a moment's hesitation, she decided not to call back. The great Mr. Chancer could sort it out when he had time.

On her way back, she remembered Scarlett mentioning Professor Wells's condition and decided to give him a call about visiting.

At the Wells residence, the housekeeper led Sarah to the study.

Before she could enter, she heard Professor Wells speaking, "Zac, regarding your sister's case, I wish I could help. But psychological treatment requires consistency, and in my current condition, I'm afraid I'd do more harm than good."

Sarah paused as a deep, gentle voice replied, "Your health comes first. If you could recommend someone suitable, I'd be grateful."

Just as Professor Wells nodded, the housekeeper knocked and opened the door. "Sir, Miss Sanders is here."

"Sarah!" Professor Wells brightened. "Come in!"

Sarah looked up, finally seeing the man who'd been speaking. Her breath caught.

He had the kind of presence that filled a room - classically handsome with an air of quiet authority. His chiseled features and enigmatic blue eyes conveyed both sophistication and an underlying intensity. Even standing casually in the corner, he drew attention while appearing completely at ease, like an expertly placed piece of art.

Noting her arrival, he smoothly excused himself, "I'll visit another time."

Sarah's interest was piqued, though she had already guessed his identity.

Sure enough, she heard Professor Wells speaking softly, "It's a difficult situation for the Reynolds. If his sister's condition doesn't improve..."

Just as she thought. Zachary Reynolds, the well known third son of the Reynolds Empire.

The Reynolds family dominated the real estate market on the East Coast, their recent meteoric rise attributed to their CEO, Zachary. The business world buzzed with stories of his brilliance and ruthless deal-making, though he carefully avoided the spotlight. Everyone wanted to know more about the man behind the success.

Sarah hadn't expected to run into him here. She remembered Scarlett mentioning he'd be at tomorrow's hunting event. Looking at him, he seemed an unlikely participant in such activities.

Meanwhile, Professor Wells, hearing about her divorce, felt a mix of emotions. Sarah had been his star student in college before marrying young and abandoning her studies in psychology. He'd always regretted that. Seeing her now, divorced but unbroken, brought him relief.

"You were my most promising psychology student," he said. "If not for the interruption, you might have made significant contributions to the field. Now that you have time, have you considered returning to psychology?"

“It’s my fault.”Charlotte took a deep breath. When she met his deep, haunted eyes, she knew nothing was going to change. And she was right. After bringing her home, James only got worse. He started spending every day at the seaside villa, staking out the place just to figure out whether the woman living there was really Sarah or not. Each time he caught a glimpse of her, that hollow space inside him filled again, if only for a moment.Regret had already carved itself into his bones. Night after night, he’d sit in his car, cigarette burning low between his fingers, lips twisting into a bitter smile at his own stupidity. But his obsession came at a cost, one that another woman was paying.Charlotte never thought she’d end up alone in an empty house. They had already been sleeping in separate rooms, but at least she used to hear him come home. Now, James treated their house like a hotel. Days passed without her seeing him at all. When she couldn’t take it anymore, she went to Cha

Her father finally gave up arguing. He lifted both hands in surrender. “Alright, alright, everything I say is wrong. I’ll keep quiet.”Her mother shot him a glare before turning her attention back to their daughter. “Charlotte, your father may sound harsh, but his heart’s soft. If you really can’t go on like this, we won’t force you. But think carefully, you and James have a child together. If you get divorced, what happens to the kid? What if he remarries? The assets would have to be split again. Have you thought about all that?”Charlotte looked up, her face pale but her voice firm. “Dad, Mom, don’t worry. I’ve never thought about divorcing James. Since I married him, I’m his for life. Even if he doesn’t love me, I’ll still be the one by his side.”Her father sighed, half relieved, half weary. “If that’s how you feel, then I won’t lecture you anymore. Go back later. The child’s still young, he needs his mother.”Charlotte felt her heart sink to the bottom. From her father’s tone,

Charlotte laughed through her tears and, furious, swept her coffee cup off the table. It hit the floor with a loud crash and shattered, which finally made the man at the door stop.James turned, his face colder than before.Only when she made him angry did she get a moment of his attention.Charlotte’s grief tasted like bile. She forced the words out. “You don’t go. I’ll leave.”Under his indifferent stare, she wiped her face and fled the study. Even though she’d steeled herself, she lingered at the doorway for a long time, secretly hoping he would follow. Of course he didn’t. The outcome was always the same.James looked at the mess on the floor, pinched the bridge of his nose, and called someone to come clean up. Then he sat back down and opened a file. A photo filled the center of the screen. The woman in it smiled with the same graceful ease he remembered.Just like Charlotte had said, he couldn’t help himself. Sarah was an addiction he couldn’t kick, and maybe he didn’t

Sarah gave a faint smile. “I just meant that she’s spent her whole life being someone else’s stand-in. All that pain and humiliation, just so she could look a little more like me. Isn’t that pathetic? She went through hell for it, and in the end, the money she was promised never came. I’d say that’s the real reason her mother got kicked out of the hospital.”Leon frowned. “You shouldn’t have any contact with the outside world. How do you even know all that?”Sarah calmly cut into her steak, her face unreadable. “When Vivian brought Mandy to see me, I already knew everything.”A faint smile tugged at her lips. “I know you’re suspicious of me, but don’t be so naïve. Don’t let people lead you around like a fool.”Leon swallowed his last bite of steak and smiled slightly. “You don’t need to remind me.”---At the Chancer estate.“Madam,” the maid said, holding a cleaning caddy, “I was just going upstairs to tidy up.”Charlotte frowned and stopped her. “Didn’t I say the upstairs sho

“If I could tell, I wouldn’t be here,” Leon said, resting his chin on his hand.Vivian gave a faint, bitter smile. “So you came all this way just to ask me that? Don’t forget about the acquisition. I still need your help. I want Zachary to regret what he did—completely.”Leon’s expression darkened. His gaze swept over the mess on the floor, empty wine bottles scattered around the sofa. “You’ve turned into someone I don’t even recognize. What happened to you? How did you end up like this?”Her hair was a tangled mess, her eyes sunken, her whole face pale and lifeless.Vivian suddenly lost control. “It’s all because of Sarah!” she shouted.Leon frowned. “Her? What did she do?”“Because of her, Zachary cut me off. I’ll never forgive that woman.” Vivian’s voice trembled with anger, her hands shaking. In a sudden outburst, she stepped closer to Leon and yanked open her blouse. Her chest was covered in bruises and bite marks, raw and red, some half-healed, others still inflamed. It lo

They stepped into the elevator. Leon thought to himself that the Wilsons must be running out of money, otherwise Vivian would never live in a place like this. She had always been picky about comfort and standards. They knocked. The door took a long time to open.Vivian froze when she saw Leon, then frowned. “What are you doing here?” she asked.“You look wrecked after only a few days. I couldn’t find you. Where have you been?” Leon snapped.Vivian’s face was drawn and her eyes were bloodshot. When she saw Leon, she remembered the call she’d made the day she was taken and his missed calls. Anger flashed across her face. “Why didn’t you pick up that day?” she demanded.Leon sank into the sofa like he owned the place, one leg casually propped on the coffee table. He sounded bored. “You messed up before. This was just a lesson.”“So you have no idea what I went through?” Vivian bit her lip.Leon raised an eyebrow. “Oh? And what exactly did you go through?”“Enough of that. What a
