Chapter 6

Author: Summer Knowles
Richard slammed his teacup down, his voice heavy with disappointment. "Since the day she joined this family, your mother has done nothing but tear her down. Every time she got sick, she had to handle it alone. Whenever Lucy wanted the latest designer bag or jewelry, Sarah was the one footing the bill. Night after night, she'd wait up for you, keeping your dinner warm. And that time you made yourself sick pining over Charlotte? Sarah spent hours making you homemade soup, burning her hands raw in the process."

He sighed deeply. "Even when she lost her father and lived with the Larsons, she never had to do any of that. James, Sarah gave you everything. Charlotte brings you one bowl of soup, and suddenly she's the perfect woman?"

James's fists clenched as he listened, his eyes darkening like storm clouds.

Sarah knew nothing of this conversation. For once, she slept well that night.

The next morning at eight-thirty, she called James about finalizing the divorce, "Mr. Chancer, if you're available, could you meet me at the courthouse at nine? I’ll be waiting outside."

"I have a meeting," James replied flatly. "Let's handle it another day."

He hung up before she could respond.

Sarah stood there, stunned. She distinctly remembered reminding him yesterday.

Important people, busy schedules. After a moment's hesitation, she decided not to call back. The great Mr. Chancer could sort it out when he had time.

On her way back, she remembered Scarlett mentioning Professor Wells's condition and decided to give him a call about visiting.

At the Wells residence, the housekeeper led Sarah to the study.

Before she could enter, she heard Professor Wells speaking, "Zac, regarding your sister's case, I wish I could help. But psychological treatment requires consistency, and in my current condition, I'm afraid I'd do more harm than good."

Sarah paused as a deep, gentle voice replied, "Your health comes first. If you could recommend someone suitable, I'd be grateful."

Just as Professor Wells nodded, the housekeeper knocked and opened the door. "Sir, Miss Sanders is here."

"Sarah!" Professor Wells brightened. "Come in!"

Sarah looked up, finally seeing the man who'd been speaking. Her breath caught.

He had the kind of presence that filled a room - classically handsome with an air of quiet authority. His chiseled features and enigmatic blue eyes conveyed both sophistication and an underlying intensity. Even standing casually in the corner, he drew attention while appearing completely at ease, like an expertly placed piece of art.

Noting her arrival, he smoothly excused himself, "I'll visit another time."

Sarah's interest was piqued, though she had already guessed his identity.

Sure enough, she heard Professor Wells speaking softly, "It's a difficult situation for the Reynolds. If his sister's condition doesn't improve..."

Just as she thought. Zachary Reynolds, the well known third son of the Reynolds Empire.

The Reynolds family dominated the real estate market on the East Coast, their recent meteoric rise attributed to their CEO, Zachary. The business world buzzed with stories of his brilliance and ruthless deal-making, though he carefully avoided the spotlight. Everyone wanted to know more about the man behind the success.

Sarah hadn't expected to run into him here. She remembered Scarlett mentioning he'd be at tomorrow's hunting event. Looking at him, he seemed an unlikely participant in such activities.

Meanwhile, Professor Wells, hearing about her divorce, felt a mix of emotions. Sarah had been his star student in college before marrying young and abandoning her studies in psychology. He'd always regretted that. Seeing her now, divorced but unbroken, brought him relief.

"You were my most promising psychology student," he said. "If not for the interruption, you might have made significant contributions to the field. Now that you have time, have you considered returning to psychology?"

Melvin didn’t join the dance floor. He stood quietly off to the side, a tall glass in hand.Beside him was Quincy, who rarely attended social events like this. She’d always preferred her quiet, structured life at the hospital, far from the chaos of family politics. But tonight was different—Melvin would be here, and that was reason enough. She nervously accepted two glasses of wine from a passing waiter and offered one to him, pretending to sound casual. “So Miss Sanders has returned, huh?”Melvin followed her gaze. Across the room, Mandy’s steps were unsteady, her expression distracted.“That’s not her,” he said simply. There was something about Quincy that disarmed him—perhaps it was her sincerity, or the calmness she carried. Whatever it was, he found himself trusting her instinctively.Quincy blinked in confusion. From her angle, both women—one beside Leon, one dancing with Zachary—looked exactly the same. She had assumed Sarah Sanders had come back, but apparently not.Stil

Steven’s eyes went glassy when he heard her words. For so long, the burden of revenge had been his alone—heavy, suffocating, endless. He pulled Scarlett into his arms, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe, as if he wanted to fuse her into his very bones.“Scarlett,” he whispered hoarsely, “I really, really love you.”Her cheeks flushed pink. Thankfully, they were standing in a quiet corner where no one could see.Not far away, Sarah couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh. The faint sound made Leon glance over, puzzled. “What’s so funny?”Sarah quickly looked away and shook her head. “Nothing. Just thought of something.”“I would’ve expected you to be terrified,” Leon said, his tone laced with mockery. “Pretending to be Sarah Sanders—aren’t you afraid of being exposed? But here you are, smiling. Seems your nerves are stronger than I thought.”“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Sarah replied coolly, not even bothering to meet his eyes.In truth, she had simpl

Leon’s eyes narrowed dangerously, his tone low and mocking. “You’re getting more and more disobedient, aren’t you?” He reached out and placed a hand on Sarah’s head, his fingers brushing against her hair.Sarah drew in a sharp breath and slapped his hand away. “What are you trying to do?”In that instant, her dark eyes flashed with a cold, striking defiance—an expression Leon had seen before, on her.Ever since she had put on the gown, he had caught himself wavering, questioning whether this woman was really Mandy Revell or the real Sarah Sanders. Even though the DNA report sat locked away in his safe, doubt had begun to creep in again.Zachary’s calm voice broke the silence. “Mr. Lee, I must say, you’ve found someone who looks remarkably like Sarah. Even her temper is identical.”Leon instinctively glanced across the room toward Mandy, who was sitting elegantly on the opposite sofa. She sipped her fruit wine, her face composed and distant, as though none of this concerned her. Sh

Vivian chuckled softly, covering her mouth. “Well, this is awkward. I didn’t expect to catch you looking this pathetic.”Charlotte’s eyes flared with anger. “What’s so funny?!”Then, as she took a closer look at the woman in front of her, realization dawned—she was one of the Wilsons.“You’re not going anywhere!” Charlotte lunged forward, grabbing Vivian’s arm just as she was about to leave the restroom.Vivian staggered, nearly falling, before regaining her balance. Her eyes flashed with fury. “Are you insane, Charlotte? What are you doing? If you want to take your anger out on someone, go after Sarah! She’s the one who ruined your life!”“Stop pretending!” Charlotte shouted, her voice breaking. “Vivian, do you really think what’s happening to me has nothing to do with you? What’s your relationship with Henry Wilson, huh? Don’t tell me he isn’t one of yours!”“Henry?” Vivian blinked for a moment, then her expression shifted as everything clicked into place. She remembered what

James had been watching from the shadows, his gaze fixed on Sarah. But after a few minutes, his focus drifted toward the other woman—Mandy Revell. To his shock, he realized he could no longer tell them apart. What a joke. Three years of marriage, and now just one imposter was enough to blur the lines between truth and illusion. The thought made him want to laugh. He emptied his glass of champagne in one gulp, the burn in his throat matching the turmoil in his chest. He was about to move closer—until a familiar figure stopped him cold.It was Charlotte. He hadn’t expected her to show up. After what happened last time, he thought she’d have the sense to stay home. Yet here she was, standing among the crowd like she belonged. He didn’t approach her, but he knew the instant she sensed him. Her eyes flicked toward him the moment he moved. He looked away. He couldn’t face her, not the resentment, not the heartbreak in her gaze. He didn’t want to see any of it.Charlotte, however, saw

Sarah struggled to steady her breathing. She forced herself to lift her gaze, scanning the familiar faces before her—Scarlett, Mia, and Melvin.Every one of them was tense, watching her closely. Her reaction now could decide everything. For a moment, she looked lost, her eyes darting between them in confusion. Then she said, her voice trembling just enough, “Melvin… Mia… Scarlett—don’t you recognize me?”Perfect. The tone, the panic, the desperate plea—it was exactly right. Her way of addressing them was slightly off from the real Sarah’s usual manner, but that only made it more convincing. A woman pretending to be Sarah—someone afraid of being exposed—would try harder to prove herself, to force others to believe her.Leon’s confidence finally solidified. His doubts vanished. He glanced at her coldly, satisfaction flickering in his eyes.Just then, a louder stir erupted at the entrance. Heads turned, whispers spread, and camera flashes lit up the entire hall.Only one person co
