Chapter 23

The plane safely landed at the airport about ten miles from the city. Before that, Arthur had asked someone to pick us up at the airport. The person who picked us up had an emergency, so he took a taxi and left first. Arthur drove me to the inner city.

The road from the airport to the inner city is a highway; on both sides is empty land with no houses. It is currently three o'clock in the morning, it is still dark, and there are very few cars on the road.

Arthur drove at high speed. I sat in the driver's seat. I'm very wide awake now because I fell asleep on the plane.

The silent atmosphere was awkward, so I wanted to find a topic to discuss. I thought momentarily and then asked, "Who is your fiancee?"

I waited for Arthur to answer, but he remained focused on driving as if he hadn't heard my question. My voice wasn't low, so I was sure he heard me. I thought he didn't want to talk to me, so I turned my head and looked out the car window to admire the scenery.
