Helena’s phone call immediately slipped from Alice’s mind. Aside from the piles of homework which distracted her from the call, her parents finally had time for a family picnic due to the success of UNITY’s fundraising event.
Since the Le Blancs did not have the whole weekend to travel nor drive a three-hour journey to their picnic spot, they held their family picnic into the vast garden. A huge picnic cloth was spread out into the freshly mowed grass as Alice eagerly placed a stack of board games in the center.
She faced her father. “Monopoly, Scrabble, or Werewolf?”
George hummed, thinking. “Let’s go for Monopoly.”
“You always choose that because you’re so good at it,” Alice stated as she put the other two boxes of board games away. “That’s unfair.”
Her father laughed. “Life is always unfair. You need to learn how to make your way around it.” That, Alice thought, was good advice.
It was not long after Meredith came out of the house, a series of housemaids trailed behind her. Meredith was carrying two baskets while Maya and Olivia, their maids, started setting up the barbecue grill.
The three of them started the Monopoly game as Meredith and George asked Alice about her new school. Alice, who already learned from her past mistakes, did not mention Helena or Candice’s hatred for her.
“What club do you plan on joining?” her father inquired.
“I don’t know. Maybe I’ll join Leia in Literature or a science club.”
She was not fond of reading novels and classics, but she did not have any other talents or interests useful in other clubs. Besides, she would embarrass herself if she joined a club that involved singing, dancing, or sports.
“Oh, Al, you could join the art club,” Meredith suggested.
“Mom, I don’t even know how to draw a stick figure properly,” Alice reasoned in between her laughs.
“Really? I could teach you,” George said proudly.
Meredith shook her head. “Aside from your business skills, you don’t have any other talents.”
George looked at his wife, horrified. “Oh, really? How about my dancing skills, huh?” He stood up and wiggled his waist, rather, tried to wiggle his waist. Alice’s laugh reverberated through their garden as he watched his father dance like a dying worm.
When the dancing finally stopped, George settled in between his wife and daughter. It had been a long time ever since they felt like a family due to their tight schedules. He knew that Alice was growing up fast, and times like this would be less and less, but deep down, he hoped that his little girl would stay the same.
George smiled warmly at Alice. “I love you, Al.”
Alice was not fond of intimacy, but because it was her father…
Well, she could make an exception. “I wuv you too,” she said as she stuffed her mouth with bacon.
“And I love you, Mer.”
Alice failed to notice it because her attention was on the Monopoly and bacon, but her mother did not reply to her father’s declaration of love.
Monday came, and Alice was delighted with her weekend. She caught up with her homework, read plenty of comic books, watched some movies, and had a wonderful family time she was craving for.
Leia, on the other hand, did not look like she had a great time. There were huge, dark circles around her eyes; even her eyeglass could not cover it up. She was not even carrying her usual books.
“What’s up?” Alice asked her friend as they both sat at their homeroom.
“My morale is not up.”
Alice snorted; she was about to ask Leia what happened, but Miss Dalia already came in for their homeroom attendance.
For the rest of the morning period, Alice focused on her lessons. She and Leia were the type of students who listened very well to their teachers, passed homework on time, and were always at their best behavior.
When lunch came, the two sat on their usual spot at the corner of the cafeteria. Now that a week had passed since classes started, the groups around the academy became more defined. Candice’s group, also known as the mean girls, settled themselves at the center while Thomas and his art friends ate lunch by the window.
Alice felt in her gut that this set-up would change once the clubs started.
“So, do you mind telling me why your morale is not up?” Alice queried.
Leia ignored her question. “Where’s Helena?”
Right then and there, Alice remembered Helena and her unusual call. She was meaning to ask Helena about it but did not have the chance.
“Maybe she’s reading at one of her hiding spots.”
For the week that they ate lunch together, Helena told them about the spots around the academy where they could read and eat peacefully. She was the type of girl to hide around the campus so no one would be able to bully and insult her.
“That’s weird. She said she’ll take us there,” Leia uttered.
Alice squinted her huge eyes at Leia, but the latter averted her gaze and ate a spoonful of steak. It was apparent that Leia was changing their course of conversation.
“Alright, fine,” Leia stated when she had enough of Alice’s scrutinizing stares. “After the UNITY party, my parents introduced me to some guy. We both know it was normal for our families to introduce us to a lot of people, but this one is different.”
Alice, who already had an idea as to where this was going, nodded. “Go on.”
“Mom said that this guy and I—” Leia’s words hung into the air when a boy walking towards their table caught her attention. “Oh, heavens,” she whispered.
The boy was over five feet tall, had short, neatly cut, dark-brown hair, stunning blue eyes, and a robust and muscular body. However, despite his attractive appearance, Leia found him displeasing to the eyes.
“Can we talk?” the boy asked; his eyes were on Leia.
Alice stared at the boy shamelessly, not because he was handsome, but because his face and voice were oddly familiar.
“Take a seat, Yu,” Leia mumbled.
Yu glanced at Alice. “In private, if you don’t mind.”
“No, it’s okay. Alice can hear it. She knows.”
On the other hand, Alice did not precisely know. She had an idea of what this was about, of course; arranged dates were not uncommon within their community.
Her mother, for instance, was also in favor of arranged dates and marriages for convenience. If it were not for her father, Alice would have been in an arranged marriage as well.
Yu sat beside Alice, in front of Leia. At that moment, her memory cleared up, and she immediately remembered why he was familiar. He was the boy she saw arguing with the senatorial candidate, Li Jing Zhang.
She was no detective but based on his appearance and similarities to the politician; she knew they were related. A father and a son, perhaps.
She did hear Li Jing threaten Yu, though. Something about his mother.
“I know you don’t like our set-up as much as I do,” Yu started. “But I am willing to do it so that my father gets off my back. I’m asking you to do the same.”
“So, you’re saying we should date?” Leia clarified. “Like, an actual date? Are you serious?”
Alice knew how smart Leia was, but right now, she sounded a little less brilliant.
“Just think about it.” Yu, looking both disappointed and hopeful, stood up and left.
As the day passed, Alice noticed that Leia did nothing but thought of it. Her friend was called to answer a question at Biology; Leia answered it correctly, but Alice had spent years with Leia to know that her friend was not listening in their discussions.
On her way home, Alice’s car passed by Sally’s Pizzeria. Her eyes remained on the building as it completely vanished from her sight. It reminded her of Helena.
Wilson glanced at her from the rearview mirror. “Did you want pizza? We could turn around.”
“No, it’s okay, Wil. I just remembered something.” Alice took out her phone and searched for Helena’s number.
She did not have many contacts saved; the few numbers were of her parents, Wilson, Leia, Leia’s parents, Helena, and her only friend before she met Leia named Felicia.
TO: Helena
Hey. You weren’t at school today. What’s up?
Anyway, I just wanted to ask. What did you mean when you called the other day?
Alice waited for Helena’s reply. She waited while she was eating her dinner (beef, potatoes, cheese, and beans). She waited while she brushed her teeth. She was even waiting as she did her Spanish and Biology homework.
She waited until she fell asleep, but no reply came.
SAINT CLAIR ACADEMY STUDENT REPORTED MISSING: Saint Clair Academy was one of the prestigious schools in the country. Every year, the academy accepts fifty brilliant scholars. Aside from the tuition-less enrollment and quality education, the scholars would receive monthly allowances and free lunch meals. One of these scholars was Helena Woodrow. Helena Woodrow was reported missing by Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow on the thirteenth of September, Monday. The girl was last seen working at Sally’s Pizzeria on the eleventh of September, Saturday. The parents of Helena told the police that Helena would not usually go home for the weekends due to her work at the said pizzeria, so they did not bother when she failed to come home on Sunday. However, Helena did not show up at their house the following day. Moreover, the manager at Sally’s Pizzeria told Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow that Helena did not come to work on Sunday.
Three days had passed ever since Helena was reported missing, and it had been five days since she was last seen. However, no report about sightings nor information of her whereabouts had emerged. The students of Saint Clair Academy had settled on a theory that Helena eloped with a secret rich boyfriend; another one was that she ran away from her responsibilities and parents. Alice and Leia, however, were not impressed by these theories. They were friends with Helena for a week, and they knew that it was not in her nature to ran away. It was in her nature to hide around the academy, yes, but not run away. It infuriated Alice that everyone seemed to move on from Helena’s disappearance. However, she knew that she could not do anything but wait for updates and news. So, for the past three days, all she ever did was distract herself. She read comic books nonstop; she watched movies, drowned herself in her Spanish, Algebra, and Chemistry hom
“Do y’all need anything?” A man with a grumpy look came out limping from Helena’s house. The man’s appearance immediately distracted Alice from the keychain hanging on the fence; his knitted eyebrows, defensive stance, and unwelcoming aura proved that he was not too happy about their visit. Leia took a step backward, hiding behind Alice’s back, as she fixed her falling eyeglasses at the bridge of her nose. “Talk to him,” Leia whispered in her ears. Alice cleared her throat despite being afraid. “We’re Helena’s friends. We just wanted to know if there’s any progress on finding her.” “Oh.” The man’s face softened, the knitted eyebrows and knotted forehead slowly vanished. “Alice and Leia, right?” The two exchanged glances. “Lena always talked about the two of you.” The man sighed. “Come on in.” The four rich students of Saint Clair Academy awkwardly made their way into the house, their eyes roaming around, observing the furniture
MISSING SAINT CLAIR ACADEMY STUDENT FOUND DEAD by Deborah McIntosh, Saint Clair Academy journalistOn the thirteenth of September, Helena Woodrow, 16, was reported missing. She was last seen working at the local pizzeria on the eleventh of September. The students of the academy stated that Helena had a secret boyfriend and ran away from her parents. However, it was not the case. On the fourth of October, more than two weeks after Helena was reported missing, a boy swimming on the Pavlov Bay found a floating body. His scream caught the attention of passersby that led them to call the local police. As of the moment, the SPD released some details regarding the case. It was found that Helena had her belongings with her—cellphone, wallet, bag, notebooks, and books—so a robbery gone wrong was already ruled out. There were no struggle marks on her body aside from a soft bruise in her arms. The head police de
Everything seemed to happen quickly for Alice the moment Helena’s death was reported on the news. Deaths and accidents were not new to her, but Helena’s death was the one she felt guilty about the most. Questions after questions drowned her mind as the regret ate her insides up. If she did not study at Saint Clair Academy, would this be happening? If she called Helena back after she hung up the call, would it be different? If she told the cops about it immediately, would Helena still be alive? These mind-disturbing guilt and questions were the reason Alice admitted to her parents that Helena called her the night she went missing. This opened a lot of confusion and discussion within the Le Blanc household. In the end, Meredith and George decided to arrange a meeting with the police detective assigned to Helena’s case, Detective Sergio. He was a tall, lean man with clean-cut hazelnut hair. Alice could make out the wrinkles in his forehead and ch
Helena’s funeral was held at the school’s chapel for only a day before her casket was moved into the local cemetery.Alice witnessed how Tarry Woodrow wept her heart out, with snots and tears mixing on her face. She had never seen a cry like that before, unless she counted her kindergarten playmate, Getty, when she was hit by a car. When Helena’s funeral was over, the students stopped wearing black to school. Candice, particularly, was finally back on her usual, pink-colored tank tops and glimmering golds of jewelry.Alice, on the other hand, felt like she needed to mourn longer. So, she decided to wear a black Avengers fit t-shirt paired with denim pants. The only thing that was not black on Alice’s body was her lucky necklace and her keychain that was dangling at the zipper of her Gucci bag.“Have you registered yet?” Leia asked as the two of them were waiting for Yu at the library.“Registered at what?&r
Thomas was curious and observant, Alice thought as she settled herself at the backseat of their family car.She did not say anything about Helena’s case, of course. She did not trust Thomas enough to give him information that she kept from the cops for weeks. It was clear how much he wanted to ask more questions, but she was glad that he did not push any further. It was ironic, but because of that, he gained a bit of Alice’s trust. The following morning, Alice still wore black tops and boots in which she paired with denim pants that hang lowly just below her knees. She didn’t remove Helena’s keychain from her backpack while the lucky necklace still clung to her neck.George was already at the dining table when Alice went downstairs. His eyes looked tired behind the thick, black frame of his glasses, while his posture was in a bit of a slump. Despite the illuminating lights and lively noise from the kitchen, her father looked exhaus
The science club was using the biggest room of Hermes, the name of their science building. The wide and lengthy walls on the left were decorated with science posters; there were a few frames that showed the cycle of a butterfly, the rock cycle, and pictures of volcanoes. The right side of the room had cabinets and drawers on them. Jars filled with preserved small animals such as rabbits, puppies, butterflies, and frogs were arranged neatly inside a locked, glass cabinet.Alice squinted her eyes on the jar containing the puppy. “Is it real?” she asked. She was early for their club meeting, but Harry was earlier than her. He was already cleaning, moving tables and chairs around when Alice arrived.“Oh, it’s very real.” Harry nodded. “Sad, isn’t it?”Alice’s nose scrunched. She was not fond of animals, but she doesn’t think that it was right for them to die for science experiments like these.
Alice’s ears were ringing as she stared at Grayson, unable to move or speak. “That can’t be right.” Leia broke the silence. “Why would UNITY hurt Helena? And… and besides! UNITY won’t hurt anyone, let alone kill a child!” Alice thought of Detective Sergio, on how he did not tell her that they knew something. Of course, he would not tell her. She’s the daughter of the UNITY’s founder. Maybe he was already suspecting their family. “Why would they kill Helena? It doesn’t make any sense!” Leia continued to blabber. Alice shuddered in realization. “It does if she sees something she wasn’t supposed to see.” She could not bear to think that her parents could have something to do with her friend’s death. The th
The ballgown made it hard for Alice to navigate the stairs. The high heels made it harder.Frustrated from her shoes, Alice stopped in the middle of the empty stairs, reached down to her toes, and removed the hell-bringing, six-inches heels her mother bought.“Where are you going?”The familiar voice made Alice straighten her back and shake her head. Of course, Thomas would follow her. He always followed her wherever she goes; right from Helena’s funeral up until her Halloween journey to the precinct.“None of your business, Saint Clair.” Alice could not stop the bitterness from flowing from her mouth. “You should go back to the party. Candice is probably waiting for you,” she added.
It was obvious to Alice that Grayson was trying to avoid her.At their lunch, she spotted Grayson and Eric having a deep conversation at the end table. Instead of lunging for her friends' table, Alice directly went to her fake boyfriend's to get a grip of Grayson. However, the latter immediately fumbled for escape, saying that he was meeting his research group mates."So…" Eric started, a mocking grin spread onto his freckled face. "Grayson. That's what you needed from me. My cousin."Alice scrunched her nose as if she was not surprised to hear Eric connect the dots. "Why would I need your cousin?""You tell me, Le Blanc. Why, really?"After a few seconds of waiting,
CHAPTER 19 | Grayson Alice regretted it. She regretted the moment her mouth opened to accept Eric’s… relationship. In just a snap, she earned herself a boyfriend. She imagined that her first boyfriend would be meaningful. She imagined waltzing through the floors of their mansion with the guy, then introducing him to her parents. In her imagination, her boyfriend was a gentleman. Not like the boy Eric was. Speaking of her parents, how would she explain that she got herself a boyfriend after talking to him in seconds? “Is there something bothering you? You look unwell,” Wilson queried. “Just thinking…” Ali
Instead of clarification, Alice’s mind brimmed with more confusion and questions. If Helena really had a boyfriend, and he was the reason why Helena went missing, why was it not on the news? Why did the detective hide this piece of information from her when she asked for updates? Something was wrong. Alice could feel it inside her bones, she could taste it at the tip of her tongue. “Maybe we shouldn’t get involved,” Leia suggested as the air inside the room thickens with silence. “This is an ongoing investigation. We might screw things up.” “Swear to me.” Leia looked at Alice with eyes burning with concern and worry. “Swear to me that you’ll stop meddling with this case. Let the grown-ups handle this.” “But…”
“Hurry up!” Alice spattered as she half-walked and half-jogged to get back to Candice’s horrible Halloween party. Thomas was slowly trailing behind her.“I think that detective was lying. He knew more than what he was saying,” Thomas stated, a hint of curiosity could be heard from his voice.“Of course he knows more. He’s a detective,” Alice pointed out, her brows creasing together. “Now will you please hurry up? Or do I have to carry you in my back, Your Highness?”Thomas’ lips formed a mischievous smile. “Why are you in a rush, anyway? It makes me think that you wanted to get away from me because you’re nervous.”“You’re so full of yourself, Saint Clair.” She sho
Candice Carmine’s house was engulfed in deafening rock music while people either scream, dance, drink, or make out. Students were dressed as characters from books and movies; Alice even saw Wonder Woman kiss Captain America like there was no tomorrow. She also noticed how the colorful drinks traveled around the house, students passing them from one person to another like the Halloween party was some sort of a game. A fun, wild game.“We could still leave this place, you know,” Leia uttered as she held Alice's arm tightly."What? I can't hear you!" Alice shouted as she covered her ears slightly."I said, we could still leave this place!""You know we can't!"Alice
Alice could not believe what she saw.Her father was at home, looking sad and exhausted, while her mother was in a romantic dinner with a different man.Not just any man, at that.It was Louis Saint Clair. The owner of Saint Clair Academy, the owner of numerous oilfields in the country, and the father of the boy who she was, kind of, attracted to.“Alice, are you okay?" Wilson asked.Alice hoped she was wrong. She hoped that what she saw was a mere figment of her imagination. Meredith would not do that; in Alice’s eyes, her mother was a woman with class and principles. Her mother wouldn’t cheat. It was impossible.
Alice immediately found her thoughts funny and absurd. Why would she need a crime board? Yes, she wanted answers and justice for Helena's death, but she was no detective. She was clueless at solving crimes, and Helena's case was not a game she could just barge into. Alice heaved a deep sigh as she stared at the vast mall in front of her. The illuminated place was vibrating with a happy and carefree buzz. Whispers of joy and squeals of laughter were everywhere as kids and teenagers ran around, buying costumes for the nearing Halloween. Alice liked seeing people wear superhero costumes, but she did not like Halloween. Ever since her parents became murderers, kids started to mock her by copying her parents' clothes. They would scream down the streets, saying, 'Where's our little murderer? Where's our Alice?'
