The ballgown made it hard for Alice to navigate the stairs. The high heels made it harder.

Frustrated from her shoes, Alice stopped in the middle of the empty stairs, reached down to her toes, and removed the hell-bringing, six-inches heels her mother bought.

“Where are you going?”

The familiar voice made Alice straighten her back and shake her head. Of course, Thomas would follow her. He always followed her wherever she goes; right from Helena’s funeral up until her Halloween journey to the precinct.

“None of your business, Saint Clair.” Alice could not stop the bitterness from flowing from her mouth. “You should go back to the party. Candice is probably waiting for you,” she added.

Alice’s ears were ringing as she stared at Grayson, unable to move or speak. “That can’t be right.” Leia broke the silence. “Why would UNITY hurt Helena? And… and besides! UNITY won’t hurt anyone, let alone kill a child!” Alice thought of Detective Sergio, on how he did not tell her that they knew something. Of course, he would not tell her. She’s the daughter of the UNITY’s founder. Maybe he was already suspecting their family. “Why would they kill Helena? It doesn’t make any sense!” Leia continued to blabber. Alice shuddered in realization. “It does if she sees something she wasn’t supposed to see.” She could not bear to think that her parents could have something to do with her friend’s death. The th

Bad luck always seemed to follow Alice wherever she goes. Before she was born, a raging storm took the hospital’s electric power; her mother had to deliver poor Alice in complete darkness with only the emergency flashlights guiding the doctor and nurses. When she turned a year older, his father got electrocuted when he saved her from playing with sockets in their house. When she reached kindergarten, her playmate got hit by a car for trying to follow her across the street. On her sixth birthday, her parents disappeared after killing two random people in a parking lot.The series of accidents and deaths certainly did not stop there. The Catholic orphanage she was sent to burned down immediately after a few hours of accepting Alice into their home. After seven years of living, the only string of luck Alice had was being adopted by the Le Blancs, the multi-billionaires who owned innovative companies and businesses.Everything sailed smoot

The Le Blancs lived in a remote village where the wealthy reside. Security guards constantly patrolled the area, and the construction workers and street sweepers were only allowed to enter if they had a clearance pass. The playground was filled with quality toys, the court was cleaned every day, and the grass was always trimmed.Alice’s favorite perk of living here was that she could walk at night, safe and sound. And she liked living next to the Browne’s.“How’s your first day?” Wilson, her driver, asked. “Got any new friends?”Wilson had been working for the Le Blancs for ten years now. They hired him and a bunch of bodyguards after adopting Alice, and ever since then, he had been a loyal staff. He treats Alice like his younger sister, and so she immediately felt comfortable around him.“I have a Principal that looks like Professor X,” she said eagerly.“That’s good. That’s g

  • A Murderer's Luck   Chapter 3 | A Keychain for Luck

Alice was fuming mad as she slumped down on the chair; she could almost see herself turning into the Hulk due to the extreme irritation she felt for Thomas Saint Clair. The last time she had ever felt irritated like this was when Leia watched the Avengers: Endgame alone, without telling her. They have not talked with each other for a few days until Leia apologized, and they re-watched the movie together. Alice took out one of her emergency comics, the Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds, to calm herself down. Gratefully, it worked; her annoyance immediately disappeared like a bubble when she vanished within the pages of her book. Comic books had that power on her. It was a way to escape the suffocating and disappointing reality that she had grew up with. With comic books, she felt safe and secured; she felt understood. She started reading when she and her parents went to Times Square for a quick dinner. A vast building with glowing lights and attractive

  • A Murderer's Luck   Chapter 4 | The Phone Call

Alice’s bravery against Candice spread like wildfire within the academy. Some students branded her as a kind-hearted person who stands for the poor, while some branded her as some goody-two-shoes who just wanted attention. The latter rumor was started by Candice, of course. She was so mad at Alice that all she did whenever she sighted Alice was to flip her majestic, blond hair and roll her eyes.Leia found this entertaining. “In the 1950s, eye roll was used to flirt with someone. Shakespeare used that gesture in some of his works.”“That’s an interesting fact,” Helena intervened.Ever since Alice took her side, she started eating lunch with Alice and Leia. The students found this set-up absurd; there was an unspoken rule within the academy that the wealthy should hang with the wealthy, and the poor should stay with the poor.Their little group wrecked that unspoken belief.“I don’t think Candic

Helena’s phone call immediately slipped from Alice’s mind. Aside from the piles of homework which distracted her from the call, her parents finally had time for a family picnic due to the success of UNITY’s fundraising event.Since the Le Blancs did not have the whole weekend to travel nor drive a three-hour journey to their picnic spot, they held their family picnic into the vast garden. A huge picnic cloth was spread out into the freshly mowed grass as Alice eagerly placed a stack of board games in the center. She faced her father. “Monopoly, Scrabble, or Werewolf?”George hummed, thinking. “Let’s go for Monopoly.”“You always choose that because you’re so good at it,” Alice stated as she put the other two boxes of board games away. “That’s unfair.”Her father laughed. “Life is always unfair. You need to learn how to make your way around it.” That, Ali

Three days had passed ever since Helena was reported missing, and it had been five days since she was last seen. However, no report about sightings nor information of her whereabouts had emerged. The students of Saint Clair Academy had settled on a theory that Helena eloped with a secret rich boyfriend; another one was that she ran away from her responsibilities and parents. Alice and Leia, however, were not impressed by these theories. They were friends with Helena for a week, and they knew that it was not in her nature to ran away. It was in her nature to hide around the academy, yes, but not run away. It infuriated Alice that everyone seemed to move on from Helena’s disappearance. However, she knew that she could not do anything but wait for updates and news. So, for the past three days, all she ever did was distract herself. She read comic books nonstop; she watched movies, drowned herself in her Spanish, Algebra, and Chemistry hom

It was obvious to Alice that Grayson was trying to avoid her.At their lunch, she spotted Grayson and Eric having a deep conversation at the end table. Instead of lunging for her friends' table, Alice directly went to her fake boyfriend's to get a grip of Grayson. However, the latter immediately fumbled for escape, saying that he was meeting his research group mates."So…" Eric started, a mocking grin spread onto his freckled face. "Grayson. That's what you needed from me. My cousin."Alice scrunched her nose as if she was not surprised to hear Eric connect the dots. "Why would I need your cousin?""You tell me, Le Blanc. Why, really?"After a few seconds of waiting,

CHAPTER 19 | Grayson Alice regretted it. She regretted the moment her mouth opened to accept Eric’s… relationship. In just a snap, she earned herself a boyfriend. She imagined that her first boyfriend would be meaningful. She imagined waltzing through the floors of their mansion with the guy, then introducing him to her parents. In her imagination, her boyfriend was a gentleman. Not like the boy Eric was. Speaking of her parents, how would she explain that she got herself a boyfriend after talking to him in seconds? “Is there something bothering you? You look unwell,” Wilson queried. “Just thinking…” Ali

Instead of clarification, Alice’s mind brimmed with more confusion and questions. If Helena really had a boyfriend, and he was the reason why Helena went missing, why was it not on the news? Why did the detective hide this piece of information from her when she asked for updates? Something was wrong. Alice could feel it inside her bones, she could taste it at the tip of her tongue. “Maybe we shouldn’t get involved,” Leia suggested as the air inside the room thickens with silence. “This is an ongoing investigation. We might screw things up.” “Swear to me.” Leia looked at Alice with eyes burning with concern and worry. “Swear to me that you’ll stop meddling with this case. Let the grown-ups handle this.” “But…”

“Hurry up!” Alice spattered as she half-walked and half-jogged to get back to Candice’s horrible Halloween party. Thomas was slowly trailing behind her.“I think that detective was lying. He knew more than what he was saying,” Thomas stated, a hint of curiosity could be heard from his voice.“Of course he knows more. He’s a detective,” Alice pointed out, her brows creasing together. “Now will you please hurry up? Or do I have to carry you in my back, Your Highness?”Thomas’ lips formed a mischievous smile. “Why are you in a rush, anyway? It makes me think that you wanted to get away from me because you’re nervous.”“You’re so full of yourself, Saint Clair.” She sho

  • A Murderer's Luck   Chapter 16 | Happy Halloween

Candice Carmine’s house was engulfed in deafening rock music while people either scream, dance, drink, or make out. Students were dressed as characters from books and movies; Alice even saw Wonder Woman kiss Captain America like there was no tomorrow. She also noticed how the colorful drinks traveled around the house, students passing them from one person to another like the Halloween party was some sort of a game. A fun, wild game.“We could still leave this place, you know,” Leia uttered as she held Alice's arm tightly."What? I can't hear you!" Alice shouted as she covered her ears slightly."I said, we could still leave this place!""You know we can't!"Alice

  • A Murderer's Luck   Chapter 15 | You're All Invited

Alice could not believe what she saw.Her father was at home, looking sad and exhausted, while her mother was in a romantic dinner with a different man.Not just any man, at that.It was Louis Saint Clair. The owner of Saint Clair Academy, the owner of numerous oilfields in the country, and the father of the boy who she was, kind of, attracted to.“Alice, are you okay?" Wilson asked.Alice hoped she was wrong. She hoped that what she saw was a mere figment of her imagination. Meredith would not do that; in Alice’s eyes, her mother was a woman with class and principles. Her mother wouldn’t cheat. It was impossible.

  • A Murderer's Luck   Chapter 14 | Midnight Harborview

Alice immediately found her thoughts funny and absurd. Why would she need a crime board? Yes, she wanted answers and justice for Helena's death, but she was no detective. She was clueless at solving crimes, and Helena's case was not a game she could just barge into. Alice heaved a deep sigh as she stared at the vast mall in front of her. The illuminated place was vibrating with a happy and carefree buzz. Whispers of joy and squeals of laughter were everywhere as kids and teenagers ran around, buying costumes for the nearing Halloween. Alice liked seeing people wear superhero costumes, but she did not like Halloween. Ever since her parents became murderers, kids started to mock her by copying her parents' clothes. They would scream down the streets, saying, 'Where's our little murderer? Where's our Alice?'
