Alice’s bravery against Candice spread like wildfire within the academy. Some students branded her as a kind-hearted person who stands for the poor, while some branded her as some goody-two-shoes who just wanted attention.
The latter rumor was started by Candice, of course. She was so mad at Alice that all she did whenever she sighted Alice was to flip her majestic, blond hair and roll her eyes.
Leia found this entertaining. “In the 1950s, eye roll was used to flirt with someone. Shakespeare used that gesture in some of his works.”
“That’s an interesting fact,” Helena intervened.
Ever since Alice took her side, she started eating lunch with Alice and Leia. The students found this set-up absurd; there was an unspoken rule within the academy that the wealthy should hang with the wealthy, and the poor should stay with the poor.
Their little group wrecked that unspoken belief.
“I don’t think Candice is flirting with me. If she is, it’s not working,” Alice joked.
“Her flirting does not seem to work with Thomas either,” Leia sneered, and the group laughed in unison.
It was evident to everyone that Candice had her eyes on Thomas Saint Clair. Everyone who tried to befriend Thomas always received either a death glare or an eye roll from Candice and her friends, Bea and Ivana.
Thomas, on the other hand, did not look interested. He always isolated himself within the comforts of the art room. He already earned friends, but he was always found alone with earpods on his ears or canvass and paintbrushes.
Alice could not care less, but she still felt annoyed by her first encounter with Thomas. She tried ignoring his presence every time they were in the same class, but she could feel his eyes watching her from a distance.
“I heard Candice planned to ask Thomas out for the fundraiser event of UNITY.”
“You listen to gossips now?” Alice asked Leia with a hint of confusion in her voice. Leia was the type of person to focus on facts rather than rumors and gossips.
Leia shrugged her shoulders. “Zia told me, and for the record, it’s not a rumor. It’s a fact.”
“There’s another fundraiser event?” Helena queried. “Didn’t they have one last month?”
“That’s for the expansion of UNITY across the world. Mom said they plan to build offices in third world countries first,” Alice answered proudly.
Alice may be too young to be a member of UNITY, but she could proudly say that her parents were the organization's roots.
When she’s old enough, Alice planned to continue her parents’ legacy.
Her adoptive parents, not her birth parents, to be precise.
Now that she was thinking about her birth parents, it slipped her mind to check the pictures in the hallway. Not that she was blaming Thomas for it, but she was blaming Thomas for it.
“UNITY is amazing,” Helena uttered.
“Do you want to come to the fundraiser event? We can show you around.” Alice offered.
Helena’s face heated profusely, her cheeks turning pink and then bright red. It was her first time that somebody invited her to a party. It was her first time having a real friend in the academy.
Helena’s mind quickly traveled to what dress to wear and what shoes would fit, but her imagination was shut down when she thought of her work.
“I can’t. I have a part-time job at Sally’s.”
Leia beamed. “Sally’s pizza? You work there? It was right up Pike Street, right? I love your pizzas.” It was one of her favorite pizza places; besides being inexpensive, it was also delicious.
“Yeah. Our delivery guy always traveled to the Browne’s house. I thought one of your staff liked our pizza; I didn’t know it was you,” Helena giggled.
When the night of the fundraiser event came, Alice was dressed in one of her evening gowns designed by Ashley Knightley, one of the most exquisite and famous gown designers. It was a dark blue and gold, floor-length, mermaid-style gown.
Alice was not comfortable in these types of dresses, but it made her mom happy, so she willingly obliged.
“Our donors want to meet you. It would help if you often smile, Al,” Meredith suggested as she put a reddish-pink shade of lipstick on Alice’s lips.
The event was held in Hotel Marcia’s conference hall. It was one of the most famous luxury hotels in the area. Due to UNITY’s frequent parties and events, Alice could confidently say that Hotel Marcia had been her third home. The second one was the comic bookstore.
Luxurious and automatic cars filled the driveway of the hotel. The pathway was glimmering with light and noise as they entered the lobby.
Alice was not surprised when she saw Thomas and Candice together; Candice’s hand was slung to Thomas’s arm. Before she could glance away from the pair, her eyes met Thomas.
She immediately averted her gaze and acted like she did not see them.
The moment they entered the conference hall, the handshakes and smiles started. Alice’s parents mostly accepted the handshakes, but she had to give a firm grip whenever Alice was introduced.
“This is my daughter, Alice,” George introduced. Alice’s fake smile was automatically plastered on her face.
When the formalities were over, the adults started to have their business conversations. Donations, plans, and expansion were passed all over the hall. Alice listened carefully, noting UNITY’s plans for her future reference.
It took an hour before she started to get tired of the conversations, so instead of listening, she went on to find Leia.
However, the Browne family was occupied with talking with Louis Saint Clair. She figured she couldn't just barge in there and steal Leia away. Alice decided to wait for her friend outside the conference hall.
It was too bad she did not bring an emergency comic book. This was the type of situation she was trying to avoid, but she could not even read, thanks to her mother.
“Tired from the party?”
Alice looked up and saw Thomas. He was wearing a black suit with a red tie, a shade of red that matched Alice’s evening gown. His golden hair was fixed cleanly, revealing his forehead. Alice could even smell his perfume even from a distance.
“Should I leave? Is this room not enough for you, Your Highness?” Alice asked in her most sarcastic tone after registering Thomas’s presence in her mind.
Surprisingly, Thomas gave off a deep laugh. “Sorry. I was rude to you. I didn't mean it.”
Alice calmed down a little. “Good to know that you’re aware.”
“So,” Thomas started. “How are you enjoying the event?”
“It was okay. You?”
“Bored.”
Alice chuckled. Fundraiser events were boring at first, but she knows enough that involving oneself in the plans and strategies of UNITY would make it less boring.
“You don’t have a date?” Thomas queried.
“Charity events like this do not require a date.”
Thomas grinned, and Alice could not help but stare at his dashing face. “It does require dates. Didn’t you know? I can go with you next time.”
Alice shook her head. “No, thank you. I prefer to be alone.”
The truth was, she preferred to stay out of Candice’s way. She doesn’t need those high school dramas; her life was already unlucky as it was.
Thomas was about to say something when a nearby noise caught their attention. Alice knew it was the sound of a firm slap, not because she deduced it, but because she can see the reflection of two people in the glass wall.
An older man and a boy, just about her age. She was familiar with the adult, Li Jing Zhang. His face was all over the posters nowadays for the upcoming senatorial election.
She remembered her dad saying that Li Jing will be donating a massive amount of money to UNITY.
“If you pull that stunt again, I will make sure you won’t see your mother again,” Li Jing said through his gritted teeth.
“You can’t do that,” the boy argued.
It was not in Alice’s nature to listen to these kinds of conversations, but her gut told her to stay put. Her gut was usually correct, and because of her lack of a lucky keychain, she had to follow her instincts.
However, Alice instantly regretted listening to her instincts when her phone loudly rang.
She had to pull Thomas away from that hall and hide in the nearby washroom so that Li Jing would not see them.
“You should try using ‘silent mode’ in your phone,” Thomas suggested. Alice frowned.
She looked at her phone and saw a missed call from Helena. It was unusual because their friendship had not yet reached that kind of level where they would easily call one another without awkwardness.
The phone rang again, and this time, she answered.
“Alice…” Helena’s breathing was heavy and ragged before she spoke, “They did it.”
And then the call ended.
Helena’s phone call immediately slipped from Alice’s mind. Aside from the piles of homework which distracted her from the call, her parents finally had time for a family picnic due to the success of UNITY’s fundraising event.Since the Le Blancs did not have the whole weekend to travel nor drive a three-hour journey to their picnic spot, they held their family picnic into the vast garden. A huge picnic cloth was spread out into the freshly mowed grass as Alice eagerly placed a stack of board games in the center. She faced her father. “Monopoly, Scrabble, or Werewolf?”George hummed, thinking. “Let’s go for Monopoly.”“You always choose that because you’re so good at it,” Alice stated as she put the other two boxes of board games away. “That’s unfair.”Her father laughed. “Life is always unfair. You need to learn how to make your way around it.” That, Ali
SAINT CLAIR ACADEMY STUDENT REPORTED MISSING: Saint Clair Academy was one of the prestigious schools in the country. Every year, the academy accepts fifty brilliant scholars. Aside from the tuition-less enrollment and quality education, the scholars would receive monthly allowances and free lunch meals. One of these scholars was Helena Woodrow. Helena Woodrow was reported missing by Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow on the thirteenth of September, Monday. The girl was last seen working at Sally’s Pizzeria on the eleventh of September, Saturday. The parents of Helena told the police that Helena would not usually go home for the weekends due to her work at the said pizzeria, so they did not bother when she failed to come home on Sunday. However, Helena did not show up at their house the following day. Moreover, the manager at Sally’s Pizzeria told Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow that Helena did not come to work on Sunday.
Three days had passed ever since Helena was reported missing, and it had been five days since she was last seen. However, no report about sightings nor information of her whereabouts had emerged. The students of Saint Clair Academy had settled on a theory that Helena eloped with a secret rich boyfriend; another one was that she ran away from her responsibilities and parents. Alice and Leia, however, were not impressed by these theories. They were friends with Helena for a week, and they knew that it was not in her nature to ran away. It was in her nature to hide around the academy, yes, but not run away. It infuriated Alice that everyone seemed to move on from Helena’s disappearance. However, she knew that she could not do anything but wait for updates and news. So, for the past three days, all she ever did was distract herself. She read comic books nonstop; she watched movies, drowned herself in her Spanish, Algebra, and Chemistry hom
“Do y’all need anything?” A man with a grumpy look came out limping from Helena’s house. The man’s appearance immediately distracted Alice from the keychain hanging on the fence; his knitted eyebrows, defensive stance, and unwelcoming aura proved that he was not too happy about their visit. Leia took a step backward, hiding behind Alice’s back, as she fixed her falling eyeglasses at the bridge of her nose. “Talk to him,” Leia whispered in her ears. Alice cleared her throat despite being afraid. “We’re Helena’s friends. We just wanted to know if there’s any progress on finding her.” “Oh.” The man’s face softened, the knitted eyebrows and knotted forehead slowly vanished. “Alice and Leia, right?” The two exchanged glances. “Lena always talked about the two of you.” The man sighed. “Come on in.” The four rich students of Saint Clair Academy awkwardly made their way into the house, their eyes roaming around, observing the furniture
MISSING SAINT CLAIR ACADEMY STUDENT FOUND DEAD by Deborah McIntosh, Saint Clair Academy journalistOn the thirteenth of September, Helena Woodrow, 16, was reported missing. She was last seen working at the local pizzeria on the eleventh of September. The students of the academy stated that Helena had a secret boyfriend and ran away from her parents. However, it was not the case. On the fourth of October, more than two weeks after Helena was reported missing, a boy swimming on the Pavlov Bay found a floating body. His scream caught the attention of passersby that led them to call the local police. As of the moment, the SPD released some details regarding the case. It was found that Helena had her belongings with her—cellphone, wallet, bag, notebooks, and books—so a robbery gone wrong was already ruled out. There were no struggle marks on her body aside from a soft bruise in her arms. The head police de
Everything seemed to happen quickly for Alice the moment Helena’s death was reported on the news. Deaths and accidents were not new to her, but Helena’s death was the one she felt guilty about the most. Questions after questions drowned her mind as the regret ate her insides up. If she did not study at Saint Clair Academy, would this be happening? If she called Helena back after she hung up the call, would it be different? If she told the cops about it immediately, would Helena still be alive? These mind-disturbing guilt and questions were the reason Alice admitted to her parents that Helena called her the night she went missing. This opened a lot of confusion and discussion within the Le Blanc household. In the end, Meredith and George decided to arrange a meeting with the police detective assigned to Helena’s case, Detective Sergio. He was a tall, lean man with clean-cut hazelnut hair. Alice could make out the wrinkles in his forehead and ch
Helena’s funeral was held at the school’s chapel for only a day before her casket was moved into the local cemetery.Alice witnessed how Tarry Woodrow wept her heart out, with snots and tears mixing on her face. She had never seen a cry like that before, unless she counted her kindergarten playmate, Getty, when she was hit by a car. When Helena’s funeral was over, the students stopped wearing black to school. Candice, particularly, was finally back on her usual, pink-colored tank tops and glimmering golds of jewelry.Alice, on the other hand, felt like she needed to mourn longer. So, she decided to wear a black Avengers fit t-shirt paired with denim pants. The only thing that was not black on Alice’s body was her lucky necklace and her keychain that was dangling at the zipper of her Gucci bag.“Have you registered yet?” Leia asked as the two of them were waiting for Yu at the library.“Registered at what?&r
Thomas was curious and observant, Alice thought as she settled herself at the backseat of their family car.She did not say anything about Helena’s case, of course. She did not trust Thomas enough to give him information that she kept from the cops for weeks. It was clear how much he wanted to ask more questions, but she was glad that he did not push any further. It was ironic, but because of that, he gained a bit of Alice’s trust. The following morning, Alice still wore black tops and boots in which she paired with denim pants that hang lowly just below her knees. She didn’t remove Helena’s keychain from her backpack while the lucky necklace still clung to her neck.George was already at the dining table when Alice went downstairs. His eyes looked tired behind the thick, black frame of his glasses, while his posture was in a bit of a slump. Despite the illuminating lights and lively noise from the kitchen, her father looked exhaus
Alice’s ears were ringing as she stared at Grayson, unable to move or speak. “That can’t be right.” Leia broke the silence. “Why would UNITY hurt Helena? And… and besides! UNITY won’t hurt anyone, let alone kill a child!” Alice thought of Detective Sergio, on how he did not tell her that they knew something. Of course, he would not tell her. She’s the daughter of the UNITY’s founder. Maybe he was already suspecting their family. “Why would they kill Helena? It doesn’t make any sense!” Leia continued to blabber. Alice shuddered in realization. “It does if she sees something she wasn’t supposed to see.” She could not bear to think that her parents could have something to do with her friend’s death. The th
The ballgown made it hard for Alice to navigate the stairs. The high heels made it harder.Frustrated from her shoes, Alice stopped in the middle of the empty stairs, reached down to her toes, and removed the hell-bringing, six-inches heels her mother bought.“Where are you going?”The familiar voice made Alice straighten her back and shake her head. Of course, Thomas would follow her. He always followed her wherever she goes; right from Helena’s funeral up until her Halloween journey to the precinct.“None of your business, Saint Clair.” Alice could not stop the bitterness from flowing from her mouth. “You should go back to the party. Candice is probably waiting for you,” she added.
It was obvious to Alice that Grayson was trying to avoid her.At their lunch, she spotted Grayson and Eric having a deep conversation at the end table. Instead of lunging for her friends' table, Alice directly went to her fake boyfriend's to get a grip of Grayson. However, the latter immediately fumbled for escape, saying that he was meeting his research group mates."So…" Eric started, a mocking grin spread onto his freckled face. "Grayson. That's what you needed from me. My cousin."Alice scrunched her nose as if she was not surprised to hear Eric connect the dots. "Why would I need your cousin?""You tell me, Le Blanc. Why, really?"After a few seconds of waiting,
CHAPTER 19 | Grayson Alice regretted it. She regretted the moment her mouth opened to accept Eric’s… relationship. In just a snap, she earned herself a boyfriend. She imagined that her first boyfriend would be meaningful. She imagined waltzing through the floors of their mansion with the guy, then introducing him to her parents. In her imagination, her boyfriend was a gentleman. Not like the boy Eric was. Speaking of her parents, how would she explain that she got herself a boyfriend after talking to him in seconds? “Is there something bothering you? You look unwell,” Wilson queried. “Just thinking…” Ali
Instead of clarification, Alice’s mind brimmed with more confusion and questions. If Helena really had a boyfriend, and he was the reason why Helena went missing, why was it not on the news? Why did the detective hide this piece of information from her when she asked for updates? Something was wrong. Alice could feel it inside her bones, she could taste it at the tip of her tongue. “Maybe we shouldn’t get involved,” Leia suggested as the air inside the room thickens with silence. “This is an ongoing investigation. We might screw things up.” “Swear to me.” Leia looked at Alice with eyes burning with concern and worry. “Swear to me that you’ll stop meddling with this case. Let the grown-ups handle this.” “But…”
“Hurry up!” Alice spattered as she half-walked and half-jogged to get back to Candice’s horrible Halloween party. Thomas was slowly trailing behind her.“I think that detective was lying. He knew more than what he was saying,” Thomas stated, a hint of curiosity could be heard from his voice.“Of course he knows more. He’s a detective,” Alice pointed out, her brows creasing together. “Now will you please hurry up? Or do I have to carry you in my back, Your Highness?”Thomas’ lips formed a mischievous smile. “Why are you in a rush, anyway? It makes me think that you wanted to get away from me because you’re nervous.”“You’re so full of yourself, Saint Clair.” She sho
Candice Carmine’s house was engulfed in deafening rock music while people either scream, dance, drink, or make out. Students were dressed as characters from books and movies; Alice even saw Wonder Woman kiss Captain America like there was no tomorrow. She also noticed how the colorful drinks traveled around the house, students passing them from one person to another like the Halloween party was some sort of a game. A fun, wild game.“We could still leave this place, you know,” Leia uttered as she held Alice's arm tightly."What? I can't hear you!" Alice shouted as she covered her ears slightly."I said, we could still leave this place!""You know we can't!"Alice
Alice could not believe what she saw.Her father was at home, looking sad and exhausted, while her mother was in a romantic dinner with a different man.Not just any man, at that.It was Louis Saint Clair. The owner of Saint Clair Academy, the owner of numerous oilfields in the country, and the father of the boy who she was, kind of, attracted to.“Alice, are you okay?" Wilson asked.Alice hoped she was wrong. She hoped that what she saw was a mere figment of her imagination. Meredith would not do that; in Alice’s eyes, her mother was a woman with class and principles. Her mother wouldn’t cheat. It was impossible.
Alice immediately found her thoughts funny and absurd. Why would she need a crime board? Yes, she wanted answers and justice for Helena's death, but she was no detective. She was clueless at solving crimes, and Helena's case was not a game she could just barge into. Alice heaved a deep sigh as she stared at the vast mall in front of her. The illuminated place was vibrating with a happy and carefree buzz. Whispers of joy and squeals of laughter were everywhere as kids and teenagers ran around, buying costumes for the nearing Halloween. Alice liked seeing people wear superhero costumes, but she did not like Halloween. Ever since her parents became murderers, kids started to mock her by copying her parents' clothes. They would scream down the streets, saying, 'Where's our little murderer? Where's our Alice?'
