"I'll go to your ward," Ian said.

"No, don't—" He hung up on me before I could finish.

The following day, I got into the car the sanitorium had sent to pick me up. Ian watched me the whole time. My family were all there with me; I didn't want them to notice anything.

Before getting into the car, Ian stopped me and held out his phone. "Could you give me your new number, DeeDee? I've tried calling you using different numbers over the past eight months, but you've never responded."

After unilaterally announcing our breakup, I hadn't just blocked him everywhere. I'd even changed my number. Now that he was asking for my new one, I didn't hesitate to give it to him. The first thing I did after we exchanged numbers was to transfer the cost of the sanitorium to him.

Whatever bad blood was between Dad and James had to be resolved themselves—I just didn't want to owe Ian.

"Don't bother paying me for the sanitorium. I won't take the money." He transferred the money back to me, his attitude
