SCARLET
10:30pm. Home. "You know… staying here is going to be hard. People aren’t going to forget what happened." My father said to me. His voice cracked slightly, “I have spoken to a few people in the Shadow Flake Pack. Maybe... It's time to think about leaving. I want you to start over.” My chest tightened, I wiped my face with the sleeve of my hoodie, my heart thudding painfully in my chest. Great, even my family doesn’t want me around them. "You want me to leave," I said quietly, not really a question but more like a confirmation of what I just heard. "I don’t want you to suffer, Scar. Not more than you already have. It’s the only way for you to find peace." For once, he wasn’t hiding behind Mom and Alyssa or avoiding hard decisions. It was just him, sitting here with me, offering me the one thing I hadn’t expected from him—an out. And I hated that part of me was considering it. NEXT MORNING, 5:30am. My father pulled me into a tight embrace, his arms wrapping almost too tightly around me. I bit the inside of my cheek to stop my tears, but it was no use. Hot, stubborn tears slipped free, streaking down my face. I was really going to miss him. He’s the only one who atleast had my back in this house, even if he was still mostly controlled by Mom. “If she wants to leave, she might as well do it now,” my mother’s voice cut through the moment, cold and indifferent. I felt my father’s grip shift slightly, a sigh escaping his lips. He didn’t respond to her. Instead, he held me just a second longer before slowly letting me go. I watched as he unfastened the familiar bracelet he always wore—the one with his initials etched on the inside. Without a word, he placed it in my hand and gently closed my fingers around it. “Don’t forget your home ,” he whispered, his voice thick with meaning. I nodded quickly, too overwhelmed to trust myself to say anything. It was time to go. I wiped my face with the sleeve of my jacket and grabbed my bags, my heart heavy as I turned toward the door. Just as I was about to step away, my mother’s voice stopped me. “Here.” I turned slowly, surprised to see her holding out a set of keys and a thick brown envelope. “Take the Porsche,” she said, her tone flat. “You’ll need money for upkeep too.” I blinked, staring down at the envelope and keys in disbelief. Of all the things I expected, generosity wasn’t one of them. My father looked just as startled, But when I glanced back at him, he gave me a small nod, as if telling me it was okay to accept. I let out a slow breath and carefully took the keys and envelope from her outstretched hands. I dipped my head in a small bow, forcing out the words. “Thank you, Mom.” “Yeah, yeah,” she muttered, already turning away. “You should leave now.” **** My grip tightened around the steering wheel, as I sped down the highway. The radio murmured in the background, but the music barely registered. My thoughts were not anywhere near here. What was waiting for me at Shadow Flake? Could running away really change anything? I was just a wolf-less twenty-five-year-old outcast, who is a cuu outward and whose life seemed to have no sense of direction. Then the radio suddenly crackled, distracting me from my thoughts. The next thing I heard almost made me slam my legs against the brakes in shock. “Scarlet Tanner has been declared wanted by the Alpha of Twilight Zone. She reportedly fled earlier this morning, stealing a large sum of money entrusted to her mother by the Pack and taking her family’s Porsche.” A beat of silence followed before the announcer’s voice lowered unfavorably. “A generous reward will be offered to anyone who finds her—alive or dead.” My heart slammed into my ribs. Shit. I should’ve known better. The sudden generosity was very fishy—it was all a setup. Of course, it was. How could I have been so naive? Hii o w could I have been so stupid. I barely had a moment to think before I saw them—cars closing in through the rearview mirror. My pulse spiked, and instincts took over. Slamming my foot down on the accelerator, I sped faster, the tires squealing as I veered sharply onto the open road. Proving my innocence wasn’t even an option. Not with the Alpha involved and everything that happened yesterday. I needed to escape. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tight my knuckles turned white, my heart pounding in a rhythmless beat, I didn’t even have the time to feel pity for myself. I just wanted to live. They were getting closer. I stole a glance in the rearview mirror, only to see the cars trailing dangerously close—closer with every passing second. My chest tightened with every ragged breath I took, my heart hammering so violently I could feel it in my ear. They were relentless. I knew that once they caught me, there would be no mercy. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, a dark fur cut through the trees—wolves. Their sleek bodies darted between the shadows, moving in perfect sync with the cars tailing me. They weren’t just any wolves. They were warrior wolves. Their glowing yellow eyes locked on the car, like they’d already claimed me as prey. I pressed the gas pedal to the floor, the engine roaring in protest. For a brief second, I thought I might outrun them, I definitely would. But then —thud- thud- thud— the car jerked violently. A warning light flashed on the dashboard, and the engine sputtered. “No... no, no, not now!” I shouted, slamming my hand on the steering wheel continuously like it would help, even though I knew absolutely nothing about cars. I must give it to my mother, she carefully planned this to perfection. The car lurched to a stop, coughing its last breath before the engine gave out entirely. There was no time to think, no time to curse my luck, no time to blame my mother. The sound of claws scraping against the ground and the hum of engines grew louder. I yanked the door handle, threw myself out of the car, and ran. How was a mere human like me going to outrun the number of wolves chasing me right now? My feet pounded against the dirt as I sprinted. If anything, I wasn’t going to give up on my life very easily. I sighted a towering sign barely visible through the trees. WILLOW BROOKE The letters stood bold, dripping with warning. A chill crawled down my spine. Willow Brooke. The most feared of the seven packs in the state. No one entered unless they had a death wish. I was between the devil and the deep blue sea, but I didn’t have the luxury to hesitate. I could hear the wolves’ snarls closing in, their hot breath nearly brushing the back of my neck. Without a second thought, I crossed the boundary into Willow Brooke territory, not caring about what was waiting for me in it. Better to die in the hands of strangers, than in the hands of people I consider family.SCARLETBranches scratched my skin as I darted deeper into the woods, lungs burning, heart pounding. I knew nothing about the land I was racing through—only that it was a place no one sane dared to venture. The wolves had stopped at the border, pacing but unwilling to cross. That should’ve been a relief, but it wasn’t.Still, I kept running. I ran until my legs screamed in protest and air almost dried up in my lungs. I stumbled to a halt, leaning against a tree, my heart hammering in my chest.Had I lost them? Hopefully I have.I looked around, my body trembling from exhaustion and fear. The forest was quiet, scaringly too quiet.Something moved in the distance, it sounded like the soft ripple of water stirring in the silence. I darted behind a tree, pressing my back against the rough bark. My heart thudded violently in my chest as I peeked out, scanning the river ahead. And then he appeared.A man stepped out of the water, slow and deliberate, like a predator confident in its territo
SCARLET "Callum, just this morning you told us not to bother you about finding a mate," one of the pack elders said, his voice obviously echoing with disbelief. I realized then, that I didn’t even know his name, I just referred to him as their Alpha, My captor. We were seated side by side on grand, throne-like chairs. Callum’s posture was relaxed, like he was so used to this, like this was nothing to him. But I on the other hand could barely breathe, with the number of gazes on me, I felt suffocated. “How did it happen?” another elder asked. “It just did,” Callum replied curtly, his tone was dismissive. The elders exchanged glances, nodded as though they understood, and left us alone. “L-Luna? W-what’s going on?” I whispered, my voice barely audible as I turned to him, I hadn’t gotten the chance to ask and I might never, so the moment I got a chance, I asked. He didn’t even spare me as much as a glance.“Would you rather die?” he asked coldly, his gaze still on the dance perfo
CALLUMNext Day, Monday Morning."I got an email from the Crimson Howl pack," Nolan, my Beta, said as he stood across from me. His tone was sharp, but my mind was far away from him. I fiddled absentmindedly with the pen in my hand, leaning back into my chair my hands placed carelessly on the arm’s rest. "They said they’ve been with us for six years and want to explore other options," he continued. His voice slowly faded into a distance as my thoughts drifted to Scarlett. The conversation we had yesterday played on repeat in my mind. How can She not have a wolf. The realization of the implication hit me harder with every passing moment that I thought about it, than I expected. Scarlett, my supposed mate that I just paraded in front of the whole pack, without a wolf?. How had I missed it? Why hadn’t I sensed it sooner? Even if I’d only intended for her to serve as a figurehead Luna, I needed her to have a wolf. It wasn’t just tradition; it was survival. What would the pack think? W
SCARLETT. Few hours later. I glanced up at the wall clock in my room, 2:30pm, it wasn’t until four o’clock before my training starts. I had nothing to do but sit in silence and stare at nothing, I didn’t even have energy to think about anything, the more I tried to even consider where exactly my life was going, the more the thought slipped from my grasp. A small knock came on my door, I got up from my bed and rushed up to the door . I pulled the door open and peeped out, a sigh of relief escaped my mouth as soon as I saw that it wasn’t Callum. Rather, it was one of the park maid, I flashed her a small smile and opened the door wider, I looked down at the suitcase and duffel bag in her hands, it was mine. “Good Afternoon ma’am, Sir Nolan asked me to bring you this,” she said, I had no idea who sir Nolan was, but I’m grateful they helped me retrieve my things, I grabbed the extended handle on the suitcase and pulled it in. “Thank you so much,” I muttered, she bowed one last time b
SCARLETT 7:30 PM “Ow! Ow!” “Ouch!” “Ahh—ow!” Callum’s hands paused mid-motion, his sharp gaze sliding sideways to me. His brows arched, daring me to utter another sound. My protests died in my throat as I swallowed hard, lowering my gaze to the floor. “This is worse than I thought,” he muttered to himself, under his breath. I could feel his anger just beneath his words, though he kept his movements meticulous and steady. I winced again as he dabbed at the open wounds on my arms and shoulders. My body felt like one massive bruise, every muscle screaming in pain. Today's training session had pushed me beyond my limits—no, broken them. Tobias hadn’t held back, and Callum had let it happen, watching silently until the last moment, when I was certain I wouldn’t survive. And now, I had no idea why he didn’t let the maids clean my wounds and insisted on doing it himself. He already told me before, that my words could chain me to something far worse than death, maybe this was
SCARLETTNext day 12:00pm.I stole a glance at Callum, seated beside me. He had insisted on accompanying me to the clinic for this medical checkup and decided to stay through the process. I wondered why he decided to, but I guess he just wanted to be as thorough with me as possible, plus he was hiding the whole thing from almost everybody. The office was pindrop silent, the only sound in the room being the faint hum of the air conditioning. Dr. Salem had just finished examining me and had left us here in his office while he reviewed the results. All the pains from yesterday’s training had stopped, My body was recovering, but my mind wasn’t as fortunate. The conversation I’d had with Callum yesterday kept running through my mind, each lap leaving me more confused than before. I was dying to know what it is between him and my mother. The soft click of the door broke the silence, drawing my attention. Dr. Salem walked in, holding a folder. “Sorry for the delay. I had to double-chec
CALLUM 5:00pm.As soon as we stepped through the door, I barely had enough time to gather my thoughts before Nolan strode toward us. After hearing what happened, I decided to end the training immediately and give her time to come to terms with the news. I always knew Cora was greedy, but I didn’t see this type of greedy coming."Oh Thank goodness you’re here!" he muttered. I stiffened, locking eyes with him and my gaze narrowing on him. "What’s wrong? This couldn’t wait?" I muttered. I honestly didn’t want Scarlett bothering with our plans or getting involved. She lowered her head beside me and slowly stepped away. “I’ll get going now,” she muttered and began to walk away."Actually," "what I wanted to say concerns her more." Nolan said. She stopped in her tracks and slowly turned back to us. I took my eyes off her and they landed on Nolan. My jaw tightened and I slipped my hands into my pockets, “What are you talking about? Let’s go to my study," I said. But Nolan didn’t res
SCARLETTNext day.Monday Morning.A soft knock came at my door, pulling me from my thoughts. I frowned slightly, glancing at the clock on the wall. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the maids, because they wouldn’t let themselves in unless I did. I slipped on my flip-flops and walked over to the door. When I opened it, a young maid stood there, her smile radiant despite the early hour. “Good morning, ma’am!” she chirped, holding a neatly wrapped box in her hands, I could see her hands twitch slightly, probably due to its heaviness.“Good morning,” I replied, my voice soft as I returned her smile. My eyes dropped to the package she held. “Alpha Callum asked me to deliver this to you.” Her words made me pause. My brows knitted together in confusion as I carefully took the box from her hands. “Thank you,” I murmured, stepping back to close the door. Once inside, I placed the box on the bed and sat down beside it. My fingers brushed over the crisp wrapping paper before I spotted a
SCARLETT “Thank you!” I said to the taxi driver immediately he got to the front of my house. I settled the bills, opened the door and got out. Just as I was about to enter the house, I heard a loud honking sound, only then did I realize there was a car packed by my house. I was so consumed in my thoughts to realize. I turned, the door slowly went open and I saw Callum step out of the driver seat with a big flower bouquet in his hands. I rolled my eyes to the back of my head as I stepped back, folded my hands across my chest and waited for him to make his way towards me. “My Queen,” he said as soon as he got closer to me and stretched the flowers to me. I raised my lips in a sheer.“Don’t call me that,” I mumbled and gently took the flowers from him. “I’m sorry, ““Honestly I had no idea why I didn’t tell you about it, I guess she’s just a part of my life I so desperately wanted to forget,”“Still not an excuse, you should have told me. I deserved to know, not just setting me up
DAY OF THE ANNIVERSARY Hours before the Anniversary ….SCARLETT “If you would just talk to him, he’s been trying for two days now,” Kaitlyn said to me, she was seated on my bed, while I was seated in front of the vanity mirror applying makeup. Cora and Alyssa had gone ahead to set things up and it was just me at home. I paused and slowly looked up at her through the mirror. “You don’t understand do you?!” I muttered and she sighed deeply. “He lied to me, he told me I was his first ..”“Knowing fully well that I wasn’t, that hurts like crazy,” I paused as she completed my statement for me. I rolled my eyes to the back of my head and resumed applying my lipstick, her phone dinged and I turned to her immediately,“Is that Myla?!” I asked immediately and she nodded slowly. “She’s on her way here,” she muttered and my shoulders slumped. “No other thing?” I asked as I closed the lipstick and replaced it in my drawer. “You really don’t want to know the answer to that,” she mumbled, I
SCARLETT Later that day … “I’ve sent Kian’s location to you, Kaitlyn says he’ll be there for a while, since my mother has me already, he’s making an attempt on Callum’s life,”“I’ll update you as she updates me,” I said to Myla over video call and she nodded slowly.“Is Cora still looking for me? Do you think I should take my mother away so she doesn’t find her?” She asked, I bit on my lower lips and nodded slowly. “I’ll take care of your mom don’t worry,” I said to her and she nodded with a small exhale.“Thank you,” she whispered and I nodded slowly. “The anniversary ceremony will hold in two weeks, I plan for us to get our facts right and expose my mother on that day, I’d do it when it’s time for me to give my speech,” I said to her and she nodded slowly. “I’ll keep Callum in the loop,”“Do you still not want me to tell him the truth?” She asked and I shook my head slowly. “I think it’s best I tell him myself, I’ll find a way before the anniversary, just so he’s not caught of
SCARLETT NEXT DAY. At the hospital. “Here’s the result,” I slowly took the envelope from the doctor and stretched it out to Kaitlyn,“Will you open it?!” I asked, she swallowed hard and slowly took the envelope from me. I watched as she tore the envelope open with shaky hands. She slowly dipped her hands inside it and took out the white paper in it. Her gaze fell on it and her eyes went tightly shut.“What does it say?!” I asked my voice barely about a whisper.“It’s a hundred percent match.” The doctor supplied immediately.“Although something is surprising, the report says that you both are identical twins sharing the same parents, it doesn’t seem that way to me,” he added and I nodded firmly at his words.“I understand this is your office, but please can you give us a minute? I need to talk to her,” I said and he nodded slowly. “Sure,” he muttered and with that he pushed his chair backwards, got up and walked out. I exhaled deeply and the next thing I heard was Kaitlyn whimperi
CALLUM Later ….“His name is Marcus. He’s been Cora’s accomplice for the longest time,”“He has been helping her make all the potions that makes her execution seamless. He’s also Alyssa’s real father” Myla said to me, my gaze intensely on the building in front of us and I nodded slowly. “I’ve been seeing him for some weeks now, he has helped Scarlett and I a great deal,”“When I spoke to him today, Cora found out that he has been seeing me, I know she’s going to do something to him, this is my chance to make him escape her,” she said. “I’m only doing this because it’s what Scarlett would have wanted, and you should know, he most definitely won’t go Scott free,” I said to her and she nodded slowly. “I understand that. We just need him to be alive as our witness,” she responded, with that we both stepped out of the car and I headed towards the door. I insisted Nolan stayed behind with Annabeth while we settle this quickly. As soon as we got to the entrance I tried to open the door
SCARLETT “Scarlett!” My mother yelled as she forcefully pushed the door open and barged in.“Scarlett!” She yelled even louder. With shaky hands I slowly pushed the closet door open and peeked out. “Mom?!” I whispered, I saw her pause and slowly turn to me. I slowly opened the door fully and stepped out limping. “M-y—Myla, she tried to kill me?” I stuttered as I stretched out the wrist I had stabbed myself in to her. Her eyes widened almost immediately and she stepped closer to me. “She did this to you?!” She asked, I nodded firmly, winced pretentiously and stepped away when she tried to touch the hand. “She — she came here, plugged in, like she was being controlled by what she was listening to, I couldn’t even defend myself because I don’t have a wolf.” I said, she stiffened and slowly looked up at me. “You don’t have a wolf?!” She whispered and I nodded slowly. “I don’t remember ever having a wolf? Did I develop one in the last Eight months?!” I asked, she swallowed hard and
SCARLETT I watched as she froze over her hands gripping the door knob tightly. I wiped my tears dry and dropped the picture onto the space beside me. “Kaitlyn Pierce, my twin but we were born two hours apart which practically makes me your older sister,” I continued my voice barely above a whisper but loud enough for her to hear me. “Kaitlyn Pierce , you swore never to get married because you were scared of how badly Father treated mother, but you never said a word of it out, you told just me because you knew mother would freak out if you ever mentioned a word of it,” “Shut up!” She growled as she turned the door knob locked and swiftly dashed to me.“How did you find out so much about me! Since when have you been stalking me! Who did you pay to find out about me!” She growled in my face. I didn’t flinch, I just kept staring at her.“We were the HK twin from silvery Island, we were a force and we were unstoppable even at our young age. I was the stubborn one and you were the peace
TWO DAYS LATERCORA “What the hell Kian! After I told you to leave her to me!” I growled, my eyes on Scarlett who was lying almost lifeless on her bed in her room. Her head was wrapped in thick bandages. She looked pale white and her lips was very red. “You even had the mind to bring her here? Where do you think is the first place they’ll try to look for her?!” I asked turning to Kian where he stood by the foot of the bed. Alex was seated by her vanity table and the new girl Kian came with — Kaitlyn, stood by the other side of the bed. She had a look of strong hatred for Scarlett as she stared at her on the bed, I don’t know why but I just have an unsettling feeling around her. “You should even be thanking me for saving her life, left to Kaitlyn, she would have been dead!”“Don’t worry about them looking for her here, they’re probably caught up with looking for her in the alliances surrounding that ocean” I said to her. I slowly turned to look at Alex,“You should thank me, I wan
CALLUM 11:00pm …. “Seth, is everybody ready?!” I asked and he nodded slowly. “Great, I’m coming with you!” I said and got up to my feet. “No no, you don’t have to. Trust me, we’ll get the job done,” he said. I passed him a long stare and shook my head slowly.“I want to be there, so I can be sure you’re doing your jobs thoroughly,” I muttered. Just then, Gina walked into the living room with her hands behind her. “Callum, there’s something I need to tell you,” she mumbled. “Gina, please hold on, now is not the time, I’m actually very busy,” I rushed my words without sparing her a glance. I slowly bent and reached for Scarlett’s clothes folded on the floor. “Incase you might want to send those scent trained wolf to sniff her out,” I muttered handing over the bag to him. “Kian is not dead,” she said. I paused and slowly turned to look at her. “What are you talking about?!” “R-remember that —that night? When I said he didn’t find me ? It was a lie, he found me,” she stuttered s
