Lycans are the biggest and baddest of the supernatural world, and we bow to no one.
We have enemies, of course. The human hunters try to hunt any supernatural creature that crosses their path, but they rarely hunt lycan because of our size and speed. Sometimes they will get lucky and find a rogue lycan, but they stay away from packs. The vampires learned long ago not to mess with us, as our bite is lethal to them. And the werewolves…? Well, they’ve never been much of a threat to lycans.
While lycan and werewolves are both born of the Moon Goddess, Selina, the werewolf form takes the shape of a deformed wolf/human hybrid, with the ability to stand on two legs, and they’re only able to transform during a full moon. Their abilities, like sight and smell, are also weaker compared to lycans. They can be born a werewolf, or bitten as a human, and will transform into a werewolf on the first full moon after the bite.
Lycans can only be born. Unlike werewolves, we are also born with two souls. Our human soul, and our lycan soul. Our lycan soul stays dormant, only coming forward on our sixteenth birthday, and we go through our first shift. Lycans can hide our existence from humans easier than werewolves, as we shift completely into wolves. Though we’re bigger and faster than your typical wolf, and our abilities are unmatched to most supernatural’s. We can communicate with our pack telepathically. We also have fated mates, chosen by the Goddess. We can sense the mate bond when we turn eighteen, but that doesn’t mean we will find them straight away, especially if they’re not a part of our pack. Some Lycans can go their whole lives without finding their fated mate and will choose a mate to spend their life with.
As far back as our history goes, you can read of the sad tales of the wars between supernatural species in our history books, as we have never been able to put our differences aside. But after a war that could have wiped out all supernatural creatures over a century ago, the leaders of the supernatural communities formed a pact to ensure peace, with our leaders and elders mediating any conflict that may arise. And, for the past hundred years, peace has remained unbroken.
Until now.
My pack, Blood-Moon, is one of the oldest and strongest packs in the country. But that didn’t stop someone from attacking us, and we never saw it coming. Our Alpha, innocent pack members, and my father, our Gamma, were all killed. The elder council has tried to cover up the attack, claiming that it was carried out by either rogues or werewolves. But we know it wasn’t werewolves, as it was lycans who came that day. But a rogue lycan pack doesn’t make sense either. While they may create small packs to ensure survival, these groups rarely survive for long without an Alpha, as each rogue desires to be the pack leader, causing disloyalty and fights amongst themselves.
The attack was well-coordinated. An Alpha lead pack had to be behind it.
But then there’s how my father was killed. He wasn’t bitten or shredded by claws; he was shot.
My pack has accepted the council’s decision not to investigate the attack further, but I can’t handle not knowing the truth anymore. There are too many unanswered questions. And if the elder council won’t help me, then I need to find the answers myself.
My father was my mentor and my hero, and I can’t move on or accept my role as Gamma until I find those responsible for his death. So today, I leave the safety of my pack and territory to find answers, and I will not return until I have avenged my father.
But first, let’s go back to the night that my story began…
Eight Years Ago‘Wake up, Athena…’My eyes flutter open, and I sit up, confused. ‘What was that?’ I think to myself, rubbing my eyes in a sleepy haze. As my eyes adjust to the darkness in the room, I realize I’m alone.“Hello?” I whisper, my heart beating faster as the full moon shining through my window creates scary shadows on the walls.Pulling my blanket up to my nose, I call out, “Mommy? Mommy, was that you?”‘It’s okay, Athena, I’m here now,’ I hear a soft voice say.I scream in fear and hide under my blanket. “Who… who said that?” I call out as I cry.‘I’m Enyo. I’m your lycan, Athena,’ she tells me, and I realize the unfamiliar voice is in my head.“What’s happening?” I ask her. “How are you here?”‘We’re shifting!’ She says excitedly, and I gasp.“But… No! I’m not old enough!” I panic. “I’m not ready for that!” I cry harder.‘The Goddess wouldn’t make you shift if you weren’t ready, Athena!’ Enyo says, trying to calm me down.I suddenly feel an intense pain in my back, and I s
I wake up startled and panting as the memories of my first shift fade to the back of my mind.‘What the fuck was that?’ Enyo asks.‘That would be a nightmare, Enyo,’ I say as I breathe deeply, trying to calm my pounding heart. I wipe my forehead, and my whole body is covered in a layer of sweat as I remember the pain from that night.‘No shit, sherlock,’ she says sarcastically, rolling her eyes. ‘Why are you dreaming of our first shift? That needs to be locked away and never thought of again.’‘It wasn’t all bad. Our first run was fun,’ I say as I get out of bed to pee.‘Okay, so remember that part and forget the rest,’ she demands. It’s my turn to roll my eyes. ‘Like it’s that easy,’ I huff.‘Whatever. We need to start organizing our birthday party, by the way.’I stop washing my hands and look up into the mirror, my green eyes changing to blue as Enyo pushes forward.‘Do you think we’ll find our mate straight away?’ She asks excitedly.‘We don’t have time for a mate,’ I sigh and go b
Uncle Alex knocks on the Alphas door, and he announces for us to come in.“Gamma Alex, Athena, what can I do for you?” He asks without looking up from what he’s doing.“Alpha, Athena needs permission to leave the pack territory for an extended period,” Alex says.Alpha Damon finally stops what he’s doing and looks up at us curiously. “And why would you need that, Athena?”“I’d like to look further into the attack on our pack and the death of my father, Alpha.”He sits back in his chair and folds his hands on his desk.“Why would I allow you to do this, Athena? Your birthday is in a few months, and you’re supposed to take over the role of Gamma. And besides. This matter has been settled. The elder council investigated what happened. Why would I allow you to go out there and possibly cause trouble for our pack?”“I promise not to cause any trouble for the pack, Alpha. But I need to do this for my sanity. The closer I get to my birthday and taking on the responsibilities as Gamma, the mor
The next dayI look through the notebook that Alpha Damon gave me, looking over the names of the local packs.“Snow-Moon is probably a good place to start. Aren’t they an ally?” I ask Enyo.‘Yeah, they are. But I don’t think we’ve had much to do with them in a few years.’I put the number into my cell and dial.“Hello, this is Alyssa speaking. How may I help you?” A friendly voice answers after a few rings.“Hi Alyssa, my name is Athena Argos. I’m a member of the Blood-Moon pack, and I was wondering if I may speak with your Alpha if he’s available?”“May I ask what it’s regarding, please?”“It’s regarding an attack against our pack that happened two years ago.”She goes silent for a moment, then says, “Please hold.”The line goes quiet for a moment, and then another voice speaks. “Miss Argos, this is Alpha Jackson.”“Hello Alpha Jackson. Thank you for taking my call. I was wondering if I could please meet with you?”“My assistant said this is about the attack two years ago?”“Yes, sir.
A week laterI pace the motel room angrily after another failed meeting with a nearby pack.‘This is infuriating! Someone has to know something! I don’t understand why no one will talk to us! The only one that told us anything new was Alpha Jackson.’ I say angrily to Enyo.‘If they do know anything, they probably don’t want to get their pack involved. It could put them at risk.’ Enyo explains.‘Put them at risk for what?’‘Pay back? An attack? Who knows? But besides the attack on Blood-Moon, there’s been no other attacks in the area. They’ve at least confirmed that.’‘I don’t know what else to do. I was an idiot to think that I could do this. That I could do more than the elder council,’ I say as I sit down on the bed in defeat.‘We can’t give up now. We can’t go back after just a week and admit defeat.’‘What then?’‘Why don’t you call Uncle Alex? Maybe he can speak to the other packs and convince them to talk to us?’I sigh and get my cell phone out of my pocket and call his number.
Two weeks laterIt’s early in the morning when my cell rings, and I race over to the table to answer it.“Hello?”“Hi Athena, It’s Derek Williams.”“Yes, hi. Have you found anything?” I ask.“I think I’m finally on to something concrete,” he says, and Enyo rolls her eyes. “There’s a hunter named Bill Stokes who lives on a ranch about an hour of town.”At the mention of a hunter, Enyo’s hackles are raised, and I have to hold back a growl. “You want me to speak to a hunter?” I ask.“He’s been out of the game for years. He’s too old for the hunt now. My sources tell me he might have information on the pack that attacked yours.”“And why would a hunter help us?”“He might not help, but we won’t know until you try,” he says.I sigh and get a pen and paper. “What’s his address?”I scribble down the address and hang up from Derek.‘You can’t seriously be thinking about going and speaking to a hunter?’ Enyo asks.‘If he has information, then we need it. We have to try.’I grab my jacket, the m
“We? You were involved?” I ask him, slowly taking a step towards him. “Oh, I was involved, alright. I was there. The entire pack should have been wiped out of existence. But I’ll give your father one thing; he trained his warriors well. Too bad he wasn’t up to the task himself, though,” he says with a cruel sneer, and then laughs.I tremble with rage as I slowly move towards the old hunter. A low growl escapes my throat, and he stops laughing, his cold eyes locking with mine, as I struggle to keep Enyo at bay.‘Calm down, Enyo!’“That’s close enough, mutt. Now get out of here before I put you down too,” he says as he points the shotgun back at me.‘If he says one more thing about Dad, I’ll rip his throat out!’‘We can’t hurt him. We need whatever information he has.’“How do you know anything about me or my father?” I ask, trying to get him to talk more.He scoffs. “I was involved in one of the greatest operations to occur in over a century,” he says proudly. “We studied your pack for
The drive back to the city feels like it takes hours. I can feel Enyo pacing back and forth in my mind, and I’m trembling with rage and fear. Maybe I should go back and move his body. What if someone finds him or saw me and my truck there?‘Goddess, I did not see today going this way,’ I think to myself as I check my rear-view mirror again to make sure no one is following us.I finally turn onto Hilltop Road from Main Street, and easily find a parking spot on the quiet street outside Derek’s office. I take a deep breath and try to compose myself. I move the rear-view mirror to fix my hair back into a ponytail and realize I still have blood on my neck and hands. My face pales as I reach into my backpack and grab out the wet wipes I have in there and start cleaning myself up.My phone suddenly rings on the seat, making me jump, and my heart feels like it’s going to burst out of my chest as I look down and see that it’s Mom calling. I groan and consider not answering it.‘You shouldn’t ig
The early morning sun peaks over the surrounding mountains, spreading its warmth over our territory, but I don’t feel it. My breath is ragged as I run hard through the forest. Low-lying branches smack my face as I go past them, but I feel nothing. My only focus is to get to the lake. The lake will calm me before this rage swallows me whole.I finally see it in the distance, the lake that Enyo and I used to soak in after practice. Back when everything was right in the world. Before Daddy was murdered. Before I knew anything about the chosen.I don’t slow as I get closer. Instead, I brace for impact as I dive towards the ice covering the body of water. Enyo’s large, heavy body breaks through, and the iced water takes my breath away as I slowly sink to the bottom. I let the freezing water cool my heated body; the rage releasing from my body and my mind slowly clearing.I can hear shouts from above the water, but I ignore them. As the rage fuelled fogginess leaves my mind, I’m hit with a
“Alpha! Alpha, can you hear me?”I groggily open my eyes and see Leah hovering over me.“Alpha, thank the Goddess,” Leah says with a heavy sigh. “Don’t move, Doc Apollo is on his way.”I grab the back of my head, and I feel that my hair is wet. I look at my hand, and it’s covered in blood.“What happened?” I ask, lifting my head slightly and looking around.“You fell down the cliff side after the rogue charged you,” she explains.I look to my left and up the cliff side. “I’ve been saying for years there needs to be a railing put up there,” I say with a groan and try to sit up.“Please don’t move, Alpha. You fell a long way.”“I see that. But I’ll be okay,” I tell her, sitting up. Then I remember the reason I was in the forest. “Where’s Catherine?” I ask, panicked.“Gamma Michael and Gamma Cole have her in custody,” she explains.“And the other rogue?”She says nothing but looks behind me. I turn and see a young boy, his neck clearly broken from the fall. “Shit,” I grumble. “How did you
“Everything looks wonderful, Melanie,” I compliment her as I look over all the decorated tables outside of the pack hall.“Thank you, Alpha,” she says happily. “I hope you like everything inside, as well.”“I know I will,” I tell her with a big smile. She smiles back and bows before heading off to attend to her duties. Andreas comes up behind me and wraps his arms around my waist, nestling his nose into the crook of my neck. “I can’t believe we pulled this off.”“The pack has worked hard. I’m so proud of everyone.”I see Rich and Noah in the distance, with the Cresent Warriors, and Michael and Beta Castor behind them. I take Andreas’s hand and walk over to them, wanting to keep the conversation away from others. “Still nothing?” I ask, disappointed.“I lost their scent on the other side of the mountain,” Beta Castor says with a frown.“Leah stayed at the Cabin in case she’s stupid enough to go back there,” Tony says.I nod. “We’ll pick up the search again in the morning,” I tell them.
“How is the feast coming along?” I ask Melanie, the pack’s head cook.“Everything is coming along nicely, Alpha. I’ve ensured there’s plenty of food for both packs, with extras.” She says with a proud smile.“You’ve done amazingly, Melanie. If there’s anything you need help with, please speak with Gino,” I tell her.“The Omegas are all taking care of everything, Alpha. They’ve been very helpful, as always.”“I’m proud of all of you,” I tell the rest of the Omegas and they all smile and bow their heads.“Alpha, I need a word with you,” Leah says from the kitchen door.“Of course,” I tell Leah. “Please excuse me, Melanie,” I smile at her.She bows her head and returns to her work, and I follow Leah into the dining room, where I find Rich and Noah waiting.“What can I do for our Epsilons today?” I ask with a smile.“We have a report from our border patrol, Alpha,” Rich says.“There’s been a sighting of a couple of rogues hanging around our borders,” Noah explains.I stiffen. “From the pa
Three hours laterWe watch as fight after fight ends, and the defeated warriors fill the sidelines of the training field, joining the rest of the pack in cheering and enjoying the spectacle. We watch Michael closely as he defeats opponent after opponent.“He hasn’t lost any of his strength,” Cassia says, and I think I see something flash in her eyes, but whatever she was feeling quickly disappears when she notices me staring at her.“Or his viciousness,” Ryna adds.“Nothing wrong with some viscousness in your Gamma, Beta,” Harry says.“As long as it’s towards our enemies...” Gino mumbles.I focus back on Michael as he defeats another warrior, trying to ignore the guilt I feel from Gino’s comment.“Maybe you should have just named him Gamma, Alpha,” Tony says. “He has the advantage of being a born Beta. I don’t think anyone will beat him.”“It is looking that way. But maybe that will earn him back some of the respect he lost.”“Doubtful. But we’ll see,” Ryna says.“Cole could give him
As I walk towards Ryna’s house with Andreas, I can’t help the pounding of my heart as I think of my best friend never forgiving me.I feel Andreas squeeze my hand tightly, and I give him a small smile as we climb the steps of Ryna’s small cottage. I take a breath as we approach the door and knock.Gino answers the door a few moments later, and I’m engulfed with the anger he feels as it radiates from his body.“He needs time, Alpha.” He says shortly.“I understand, Gino. But there are pack matters that need to be attended to,” Andreas says when I don’t say anything.“I will make sure that all pack matters are dealt with,” Gino responds, his glaring eyes never leaving mine.I swallow the lump in my throat and finally find the words I want to say. “I’m not here about pack business,” I say, my voice coming out as a squeak. “I came to apologize for everything that happened yesterday.”“It’s going to take more than apologies, Alpha,” Gino says angrily.“I know, but I can only start there.”
The Next DayAthena P.O.VI try to roll over, but I’m being held in place by Andreas. I kiss his arm and say, “Time to wake up, my love.”He groans and hugs me tighter. “No, thanks.”I laugh and try to roll over again. “If you squeeze me any harder, Andreas, I’m going to pee.”“Fiiiiiine.” He releases me with another groan before rolling onto his back and rubbing his eyes. “We can’t stay in bed,” I say as I get up and go into the bathroom. “We have way too much to do in the next few days. We still haven’t questioned the others we captured with Leon the other night. We have to get the pack house sorted out…”“I knooooow,” he says with another groan, cutting me off before I repeat the seemingly never-ending list of things we need to do.I giggle as I finish up and wash my hands before turning the shower on. I hear Andreas come up behind me, so I turn around and wrap my arms around his neck with a kiss.He smiles into my lips before kissing down my neck to my mark. He leaves a chaste kis
Somewhere nearby…I’m flung across the room as my connection to the Alpha is broken.“Master! Are you okay?” Alyria asks, running over and taking my arm.I look down at her bony hand on my arm, then at her. I glare at her and slap her hard across the face.“HOW DARE YOU TOUCH ME!” I bellow at her.“I’m sorry, Master.” She whimpers, holding her cheek.“GET ME THE WITCH! NOW!” I yell at her, and she gets up from the ground and scurries from the room.“What happened, Master?” Wren asks from the corner of the room.“Her wolf broke the connection,” I explain angrily, standing and brushing off my clothes.“How? I thought the witch said she’d be locked away in the Alpha’s mind?”“I don’t know!” I yell at him, and he shrinks back in fear.“You called for me, Sir?” the witch, Elizabeth asks as she enters my office.I stalk toward her angrily. “You told me the wolf would be locked away in the Alpha’s mind. So would you care to explain to me how the wolf was able to break my connection to the Al
“MURDERER!” someone screams, and everyone falls silent, turning to where the scream came from. “Karla,” I whisper, my body suddenly shaking. She looks weak and sickly, her eyes red from crying. “WHY DID YOU KILL HIM?” she screams again, and I see Cassia running towards her. “Karla, why don’t we go back inside?” Cassia says softly, taking her arm. “DON’T TOUCH ME!” Karla shouts, pulling her arm out of Cassia’s grasp. “I WANT TO KNOW WHY SHE KILLED MY MATE!” The pack members begin whispering and pulling their kids behind them. “Karla, please, why don’t we go inside so we can discuss this,” Andreas says, taking a step towards her. He takes my hand to walk with him, but my feet won’t move. I’m frozen in place. No words are forming in my mind as I stare at the woman whose mate I killed with my bare hands. “Athena?” He says, looking back at me. “I… I…” I stutter out, but nothing else comes. “ANSWER ME, YOU FILTH!” Karla spits out, and Enyo growls. There are gasps and more whispers
