I wake up startled and panting as the memories of my first shift fade to the back of my mind.
‘What the fuck was that?’ Enyo asks.
‘That would be a nightmare, Enyo,’ I say as I breathe deeply, trying to calm my pounding heart. I wipe my forehead, and my whole body is covered in a layer of sweat as I remember the pain from that night.
‘No shit, sherlock,’ she says sarcastically, rolling her eyes. ‘Why are you dreaming of our first shift? That needs to be locked away and never thought of again.’
‘It wasn’t all bad. Our first run was fun,’ I say as I get out of bed to pee.
‘Okay, so remember that part and forget the rest,’ she demands.
It’s my turn to roll my eyes. ‘Like it’s that easy,’ I huff.
‘Whatever. We need to start organizing our birthday party, by the way.’
I stop washing my hands and look up into the mirror, my green eyes changing to blue as Enyo pushes forward.
‘Do you think we’ll find our mate straight away?’ She asks excitedly.
‘We don’t have time for a mate,’ I sigh and go back to washing my hands.
‘We’ll be eighteen, Athena. We can find our mate and settle down. Isn’t that the dream?’
‘That’s your dream. You know what my dream is,’ I say sternly, getting angry.
‘Yeah, yeah. I miss Dad too. But there’s more to life than just obsessing over his killer,’ Enyo says softly.
Rage washes over me, and I feel myself shifting. I take a deep breath and try to calm down. “Nothing is more important than finding those responsible for killing Dad,” I growl out loud.
‘Just shift already! We haven’t been for a run in weeks,’ Enyo whines, trying to force the shift.
I grip the bathroom counter, trying to keep control. ‘You’re not helping Enyo,’ I say and look into the mirror, her eyes blazing back at me. ‘We agreed last night. We’re finding the truth ourselves.’
She holds my stare for a few moments, but eventually she gives up, pulling back begrudgingly and settling in the back of my mind.
‘Thank you,’ I sigh as my eyes turn back to their usual emerald green.
I splash some cool water on my face and look at myself in the mirror again. Flashbacks of the day my father was killed fill my mind. I can’t believe he’s been gone for two years. As tears form in my eyes, I sigh and shake my head, clearing the images from my mind. I put my ash brown hair up in a tight ponytail and run a quick shower to wash the sweat from our dream away. When I get out, I quickly dry off, apply some mascara, then walk back into the room to get ready for my last training session with the pack.
#
I jog down to the training field and smile when I see my best friend, Ryna, and Uncle Alex standing at the front of the warriors that are gathered for the training session. I take my place next to Alex and begin to stretch as he pairs everyone up into sparring partners.
“Are you planning on sparring today?” Alex asks when he’s finished.
“No, I’m just going to observe training today, then go for a run,” I tell him, not able to look him in the eye.
Enyo’s ears prick up, and I sigh. ‘I’ll be running as a human,’ I tell her, shutting down her excitement.
She whimpers and goes back to ignoring me.
“Athena, you haven’t trained properly in weeks. And don’t think I haven’t noticed that you haven’t let Enyo out either,” Ryna says, concern in his voice.
“What?!” Uncle Alex exclaims. “You can’t do that to her, Athena!”
“I’m having trouble controlling her,” I mumble. ‘And my emotions,’ I think to myself.
“Well, keeping her locked away isn’t going to help that, Athena. It’s a delicate balance between our human side and our animalistic side. Keeping her suppressed is only going to cause you both harm.”
“And me lashing out in anger and injuring someone isn’t going to help the balance, either, Uncle Alex.”
He sighs and shakes his head. “You can’t let your emotions control either of you. You need to be level-headed as Gamma, Athena.”
“I know what it takes to be Gamma,” I say angrily, clenching my fists, my claws digging into my palms.
“Then prove it,” Ryna says. “Spar with me.”
I roll my eyes and cross my arms across my chest. “I’d prefer not to hurt my best friend.”
“You think you can hurt me?” He says, removing his shirt and throwing it at me, then flexing his muscles.
“No one needs to see that, Ryna. Put your shirt back on,” I laugh, throwing it at him.
“There she is,” he says with a smile, putting his shirt back on. “We’re just worried about you, Athena. Warriors talk. And if they sense any kind of weakness, they won’t accept you as Gamma,” Ryna whispers.
I nod without saying anything as I look over the warriors, torn between my responsibilities as future Gamma, and my choice to leave the pack.
“Why don’t you come to my office later so we can discuss it?” Uncle Alex suggests.
“Okay,” I say. “I’m just going to go for my run now. I need to think,” I tell them, and Uncle Alex nods, allowing me to leave.
#
Later that afternoon
“Uncle Alex?” I call out as I knock on his office door.
“Come in, Athena,” his deep voice calls back, so I enter the office, closing the door behind me.
I see the man I’ve called my uncle for as long as I can remember sitting behind his large oak desk, and I take a moment to look him over, taking in everything about him. From his dark brown hair to his deep hazel eyes, his crooked nose, and handsome smile. I commit it all to memory, knowing that it may be some time before I see him again.
When he notices I haven’t moved from the doorway, he looks up at me with a smile. “How was your run, sweetheart?” He asks, motioning for me to sit.
“It was fine. It helped clear my mind,” I say as I cross the room and sit in the leather chair across from his desk with a small smile. “I need to talk to you about the Gamma position,” I say, making sure to sound happy, instead of the sadness I feel.
“Only a few more weeks and you will be our Gamma,” he says proudly. “Your father trained you for this your whole life, Athena. You can do this.”
“Actually, I’m here to ask if you will stay on as Gamma for a while longer,” I say, looking down at my hands.
“What?” He asks, surprised. “It’s your rightful position, Athena. Why wouldn’t you take over when you turn eighteen?”
“I need answers, Uncle Alex. This bullshit about it being rogues that attacked us doesn’t add up. I want to know who was responsible for killing Daddy,” I say, looking up at him sadly.
He sighs sadly and sits back in his chair. “Athena, the Elder council looked into the attack. They didn’t find any of the surrounding packs responsible.”
“Someone has to know something. We both know that the attack was too calculated for rogues to have done it.”
“You need to accept that we may never know what happened that day,” he says, his face grief stricken.
“I can’t!” I yell as I slam my fist on the desk. “And I can’t believe you would accept that, either! He was your best friend! How can you let his murder go unanswered?!”
“I would do anything to find the mutt who killed your father!” He yells backs, breathing hard as he tries to control himself.
After a few moments of us glaring at each other, I break eye contact and drop my head in defeat.
“I can barely stand to be in here, Uncle Alex,” I say, and look around the office that used to be my dad’s. Alex has barely changed it since he took over as acting Gamma. There are still photos of me and Dad around the office, of us with Mom. Of Alex and Dad. I feel tears escape down my cheeks as I look back at Alex. “I won’t be able to move on until I find the truth.”
He looks at me for a moment with sadness in his eyes, before he stands and walks over to me and pulls me into a tight hug.
“You’re as stubborn as your father,” he says, and I giggle despite the tears. “I’m not going to change your mind, am I?”
I shake my head and pull away from his embrace. “I need this, Uncle Alex. And I need to know I have your support,” I say, holding back more tears.
He pulls me back into a hug and says, “I will always support you, Athena. You have my word.”
“I also need your help,” I tell him.
“Anything,” he says and kisses the top of my head.
“I need you to help me tell Mom…”
I feel him stiffen in my arms, and he groans. “Fuck. And you need to get permission from Alpha Damon…”
I stiffen as well. “Shit. I didn’t think about the Alpha saying no.”
Uncle Alex pulls away. “Come on, we better speak to him before we speak to your mom.”
Uncle Alex knocks on the Alphas door, and he announces for us to come in.“Gamma Alex, Athena, what can I do for you?” He asks without looking up from what he’s doing.“Alpha, Athena needs permission to leave the pack territory for an extended period,” Alex says.Alpha Damon finally stops what he’s doing and looks up at us curiously. “And why would you need that, Athena?”“I’d like to look further into the attack on our pack and the death of my father, Alpha.”He sits back in his chair and folds his hands on his desk.“Why would I allow you to do this, Athena? Your birthday is in a few months, and you’re supposed to take over the role of Gamma. And besides. This matter has been settled. The elder council investigated what happened. Why would I allow you to go out there and possibly cause trouble for our pack?”“I promise not to cause any trouble for the pack, Alpha. But I need to do this for my sanity. The closer I get to my birthday and taking on the responsibilities as Gamma, the mor
The next dayI look through the notebook that Alpha Damon gave me, looking over the names of the local packs.“Snow-Moon is probably a good place to start. Aren’t they an ally?” I ask Enyo.‘Yeah, they are. But I don’t think we’ve had much to do with them in a few years.’I put the number into my cell and dial.“Hello, this is Alyssa speaking. How may I help you?” A friendly voice answers after a few rings.“Hi Alyssa, my name is Athena Argos. I’m a member of the Blood-Moon pack, and I was wondering if I may speak with your Alpha if he’s available?”“May I ask what it’s regarding, please?”“It’s regarding an attack against our pack that happened two years ago.”She goes silent for a moment, then says, “Please hold.”The line goes quiet for a moment, and then another voice speaks. “Miss Argos, this is Alpha Jackson.”“Hello Alpha Jackson. Thank you for taking my call. I was wondering if I could please meet with you?”“My assistant said this is about the attack two years ago?”“Yes, sir.
A week laterI pace the motel room angrily after another failed meeting with a nearby pack.‘This is infuriating! Someone has to know something! I don’t understand why no one will talk to us! The only one that told us anything new was Alpha Jackson.’ I say angrily to Enyo.‘If they do know anything, they probably don’t want to get their pack involved. It could put them at risk.’ Enyo explains.‘Put them at risk for what?’‘Pay back? An attack? Who knows? But besides the attack on Blood-Moon, there’s been no other attacks in the area. They’ve at least confirmed that.’‘I don’t know what else to do. I was an idiot to think that I could do this. That I could do more than the elder council,’ I say as I sit down on the bed in defeat.‘We can’t give up now. We can’t go back after just a week and admit defeat.’‘What then?’‘Why don’t you call Uncle Alex? Maybe he can speak to the other packs and convince them to talk to us?’I sigh and get my cell phone out of my pocket and call his number.
Two weeks laterIt’s early in the morning when my cell rings, and I race over to the table to answer it.“Hello?”“Hi Athena, It’s Derek Williams.”“Yes, hi. Have you found anything?” I ask.“I think I’m finally on to something concrete,” he says, and Enyo rolls her eyes. “There’s a hunter named Bill Stokes who lives on a ranch about an hour of town.”At the mention of a hunter, Enyo’s hackles are raised, and I have to hold back a growl. “You want me to speak to a hunter?” I ask.“He’s been out of the game for years. He’s too old for the hunt now. My sources tell me he might have information on the pack that attacked yours.”“And why would a hunter help us?”“He might not help, but we won’t know until you try,” he says.I sigh and get a pen and paper. “What’s his address?”I scribble down the address and hang up from Derek.‘You can’t seriously be thinking about going and speaking to a hunter?’ Enyo asks.‘If he has information, then we need it. We have to try.’I grab my jacket, the m
“We? You were involved?” I ask him, slowly taking a step towards him. “Oh, I was involved, alright. I was there. The entire pack should have been wiped out of existence. But I’ll give your father one thing; he trained his warriors well. Too bad he wasn’t up to the task himself, though,” he says with a cruel sneer, and then laughs.I tremble with rage as I slowly move towards the old hunter. A low growl escapes my throat, and he stops laughing, his cold eyes locking with mine, as I struggle to keep Enyo at bay.‘Calm down, Enyo!’“That’s close enough, mutt. Now get out of here before I put you down too,” he says as he points the shotgun back at me.‘If he says one more thing about Dad, I’ll rip his throat out!’‘We can’t hurt him. We need whatever information he has.’“How do you know anything about me or my father?” I ask, trying to get him to talk more.He scoffs. “I was involved in one of the greatest operations to occur in over a century,” he says proudly. “We studied your pack for
The drive back to the city feels like it takes hours. I can feel Enyo pacing back and forth in my mind, and I’m trembling with rage and fear. Maybe I should go back and move his body. What if someone finds him or saw me and my truck there?‘Goddess, I did not see today going this way,’ I think to myself as I check my rear-view mirror again to make sure no one is following us.I finally turn onto Hilltop Road from Main Street, and easily find a parking spot on the quiet street outside Derek’s office. I take a deep breath and try to compose myself. I move the rear-view mirror to fix my hair back into a ponytail and realize I still have blood on my neck and hands. My face pales as I reach into my backpack and grab out the wet wipes I have in there and start cleaning myself up.My phone suddenly rings on the seat, making me jump, and my heart feels like it’s going to burst out of my chest as I look down and see that it’s Mom calling. I groan and consider not answering it.‘You shouldn’t ig
I get up from sitting on the bed when there’s a knock on the door. I open it slowly and see Uncle Alex, so I open the door further to let him in. He rushes past me and tells me to lock the door.“What’s this all about, Uncle Alex?”“Why are you asking about the Moonstone pack?” He asks, agitated.“Well, first I need to tell you about what happened today,” I say, motioning for him to sit at the small, round dining table. “Derek called me this morning and told me he had a lead. He said that he had found an old hunter living close by who might know why we were attacked. So, I went to see him…”“YOU WHAT?! You went and saw a hunter ALONE?” He shouts.“If you can’t keep your temper under control, then I’m not going to tell you…” I say, crossing my arms.Uncle Alex takes a deep breath and tries to calm down, motioning for me to continue.“He told me he was ‘part of one of the greatest operations to occur in over a century’.”“What the hell does that mean? What operation?”“I don’t know. But
Two weeks laterI slam my fist down on the table in yet another shitty motel room. “This is useless. We’ve visited five packs, and no one will talk to us,” I say, frustrated and tired.‘You can’t really blame them. From the little we have found out, what happened down here is a tragedy.’“Well, someone needs to talk. How are we supposed to find out who did this if they refuse to talk about it?”‘Who are we meeting with today?’ Enyo asks as I stand up and pack some of my things into my rucksack, getting ready to leave.“The Moonstone pack. Let’s hope they’re willing to talk,” I say as I get ready to leave.#I travel south along the old highway until I finally come across the turnoff we need. I pull onto the old dirt road and find an SUV parked on the side of the road. The young guy standing near the vehicle waves me down, so I pull over and wind my window down.“Hey there, are you Athena Argos?” He asks.“That’s me. Can I help you?”“I’m Beta Jason of the Moonstone pack. I’m here to t
The early morning sun peaks over the surrounding mountains, spreading its warmth over our territory, but I don’t feel it. My breath is ragged as I run hard through the forest. Low-lying branches smack my face as I go past them, but I feel nothing. My only focus is to get to the lake. The lake will calm me before this rage swallows me whole.I finally see it in the distance, the lake that Enyo and I used to soak in after practice. Back when everything was right in the world. Before Daddy was murdered. Before I knew anything about the chosen.I don’t slow as I get closer. Instead, I brace for impact as I dive towards the ice covering the body of water. Enyo’s large, heavy body breaks through, and the iced water takes my breath away as I slowly sink to the bottom. I let the freezing water cool my heated body; the rage releasing from my body and my mind slowly clearing.I can hear shouts from above the water, but I ignore them. As the rage fuelled fogginess leaves my mind, I’m hit with a
“Alpha! Alpha, can you hear me?”I groggily open my eyes and see Leah hovering over me.“Alpha, thank the Goddess,” Leah says with a heavy sigh. “Don’t move, Doc Apollo is on his way.”I grab the back of my head, and I feel that my hair is wet. I look at my hand, and it’s covered in blood.“What happened?” I ask, lifting my head slightly and looking around.“You fell down the cliff side after the rogue charged you,” she explains.I look to my left and up the cliff side. “I’ve been saying for years there needs to be a railing put up there,” I say with a groan and try to sit up.“Please don’t move, Alpha. You fell a long way.”“I see that. But I’ll be okay,” I tell her, sitting up. Then I remember the reason I was in the forest. “Where’s Catherine?” I ask, panicked.“Gamma Michael and Gamma Cole have her in custody,” she explains.“And the other rogue?”She says nothing but looks behind me. I turn and see a young boy, his neck clearly broken from the fall. “Shit,” I grumble. “How did you
“Everything looks wonderful, Melanie,” I compliment her as I look over all the decorated tables outside of the pack hall.“Thank you, Alpha,” she says happily. “I hope you like everything inside, as well.”“I know I will,” I tell her with a big smile. She smiles back and bows before heading off to attend to her duties. Andreas comes up behind me and wraps his arms around my waist, nestling his nose into the crook of my neck. “I can’t believe we pulled this off.”“The pack has worked hard. I’m so proud of everyone.”I see Rich and Noah in the distance, with the Cresent Warriors, and Michael and Beta Castor behind them. I take Andreas’s hand and walk over to them, wanting to keep the conversation away from others. “Still nothing?” I ask, disappointed.“I lost their scent on the other side of the mountain,” Beta Castor says with a frown.“Leah stayed at the Cabin in case she’s stupid enough to go back there,” Tony says.I nod. “We’ll pick up the search again in the morning,” I tell them.
“How is the feast coming along?” I ask Melanie, the pack’s head cook.“Everything is coming along nicely, Alpha. I’ve ensured there’s plenty of food for both packs, with extras.” She says with a proud smile.“You’ve done amazingly, Melanie. If there’s anything you need help with, please speak with Gino,” I tell her.“The Omegas are all taking care of everything, Alpha. They’ve been very helpful, as always.”“I’m proud of all of you,” I tell the rest of the Omegas and they all smile and bow their heads.“Alpha, I need a word with you,” Leah says from the kitchen door.“Of course,” I tell Leah. “Please excuse me, Melanie,” I smile at her.She bows her head and returns to her work, and I follow Leah into the dining room, where I find Rich and Noah waiting.“What can I do for our Epsilons today?” I ask with a smile.“We have a report from our border patrol, Alpha,” Rich says.“There’s been a sighting of a couple of rogues hanging around our borders,” Noah explains.I stiffen. “From the pa
Three hours laterWe watch as fight after fight ends, and the defeated warriors fill the sidelines of the training field, joining the rest of the pack in cheering and enjoying the spectacle. We watch Michael closely as he defeats opponent after opponent.“He hasn’t lost any of his strength,” Cassia says, and I think I see something flash in her eyes, but whatever she was feeling quickly disappears when she notices me staring at her.“Or his viciousness,” Ryna adds.“Nothing wrong with some viscousness in your Gamma, Beta,” Harry says.“As long as it’s towards our enemies...” Gino mumbles.I focus back on Michael as he defeats another warrior, trying to ignore the guilt I feel from Gino’s comment.“Maybe you should have just named him Gamma, Alpha,” Tony says. “He has the advantage of being a born Beta. I don’t think anyone will beat him.”“It is looking that way. But maybe that will earn him back some of the respect he lost.”“Doubtful. But we’ll see,” Ryna says.“Cole could give him
As I walk towards Ryna’s house with Andreas, I can’t help the pounding of my heart as I think of my best friend never forgiving me.I feel Andreas squeeze my hand tightly, and I give him a small smile as we climb the steps of Ryna’s small cottage. I take a breath as we approach the door and knock.Gino answers the door a few moments later, and I’m engulfed with the anger he feels as it radiates from his body.“He needs time, Alpha.” He says shortly.“I understand, Gino. But there are pack matters that need to be attended to,” Andreas says when I don’t say anything.“I will make sure that all pack matters are dealt with,” Gino responds, his glaring eyes never leaving mine.I swallow the lump in my throat and finally find the words I want to say. “I’m not here about pack business,” I say, my voice coming out as a squeak. “I came to apologize for everything that happened yesterday.”“It’s going to take more than apologies, Alpha,” Gino says angrily.“I know, but I can only start there.”
The Next DayAthena P.O.VI try to roll over, but I’m being held in place by Andreas. I kiss his arm and say, “Time to wake up, my love.”He groans and hugs me tighter. “No, thanks.”I laugh and try to roll over again. “If you squeeze me any harder, Andreas, I’m going to pee.”“Fiiiiiine.” He releases me with another groan before rolling onto his back and rubbing his eyes. “We can’t stay in bed,” I say as I get up and go into the bathroom. “We have way too much to do in the next few days. We still haven’t questioned the others we captured with Leon the other night. We have to get the pack house sorted out…”“I knooooow,” he says with another groan, cutting me off before I repeat the seemingly never-ending list of things we need to do.I giggle as I finish up and wash my hands before turning the shower on. I hear Andreas come up behind me, so I turn around and wrap my arms around his neck with a kiss.He smiles into my lips before kissing down my neck to my mark. He leaves a chaste kis
Somewhere nearby…I’m flung across the room as my connection to the Alpha is broken.“Master! Are you okay?” Alyria asks, running over and taking my arm.I look down at her bony hand on my arm, then at her. I glare at her and slap her hard across the face.“HOW DARE YOU TOUCH ME!” I bellow at her.“I’m sorry, Master.” She whimpers, holding her cheek.“GET ME THE WITCH! NOW!” I yell at her, and she gets up from the ground and scurries from the room.“What happened, Master?” Wren asks from the corner of the room.“Her wolf broke the connection,” I explain angrily, standing and brushing off my clothes.“How? I thought the witch said she’d be locked away in the Alpha’s mind?”“I don’t know!” I yell at him, and he shrinks back in fear.“You called for me, Sir?” the witch, Elizabeth asks as she enters my office.I stalk toward her angrily. “You told me the wolf would be locked away in the Alpha’s mind. So would you care to explain to me how the wolf was able to break my connection to the Al
“MURDERER!” someone screams, and everyone falls silent, turning to where the scream came from. “Karla,” I whisper, my body suddenly shaking. She looks weak and sickly, her eyes red from crying. “WHY DID YOU KILL HIM?” she screams again, and I see Cassia running towards her. “Karla, why don’t we go back inside?” Cassia says softly, taking her arm. “DON’T TOUCH ME!” Karla shouts, pulling her arm out of Cassia’s grasp. “I WANT TO KNOW WHY SHE KILLED MY MATE!” The pack members begin whispering and pulling their kids behind them. “Karla, please, why don’t we go inside so we can discuss this,” Andreas says, taking a step towards her. He takes my hand to walk with him, but my feet won’t move. I’m frozen in place. No words are forming in my mind as I stare at the woman whose mate I killed with my bare hands. “Athena?” He says, looking back at me. “I… I…” I stutter out, but nothing else comes. “ANSWER ME, YOU FILTH!” Karla spits out, and Enyo growls. There are gasps and more whispers
