There was no going back now. --- The engagement party was a spectacle, a lavish display of wealth and power that left me feeling suffocated in my sleek designer dress. Chandeliers cast golden light over the room, their soft glow reflecting off the polished marble floors. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the hum of idle chatter. Well-dressed strangers milled around, their faces masked in politeness as they sipped champagne and exchanged shallow pleasantries.

I eyed the golden watch on the table, pretending to be interested in something else while inching closer to the table. I knew it was wrong to steal but I couldn’t help it. I was hungry and I didn’t want to die. I couldn't afford to hesitate. I moved closer, each step calculated. Something in my head whispered caution, but hunger roared just a little louder. I could nearly hear the eulogy now: Artemis Vincent, dead at 22 because she was too virtuous to swipe a watch left behind by some rich guy.

"You are home right now; that is all that matters." Reaching out, Isabella squeezed Sharon's hand. "That you're back makes me happy. I missed you sis" Sharon grinned, her sister's words warmed her heart. "Oh, I almost forgot to tell you," Isabella exclaimed with unexpected brightness on her face. "I also have some good news" " What is it about?" Sharon inquired. "I'm engaged." Holding up her hand to expose a glittering ring, Isabella said. "Isabella, that's fantastic!," Sharon said Pulling her kid into an embrace.

The night opened its velvet throat to the city, black and jeweled, as if every light on the streets had been sharpened to a blade. The gala pulsed in gold and champagne, chandeliers swinging above a sea of glittering gowns and tailored suits, But beneath the violins, beneath the laughter, beneath the diamonds, there was blood in the air, and Talana could feel it. Her hand was wound tight around Massimo’s arm, fingers pressed against the fine weave of his tuxedo sleeve, but it wasn’t just affection, it was grounding. A storm sat on her chest, hot and heavy, and only his presence steadied it.

“Where’s the heartbreak? The cheating scandals? The unexpected plot twists?” Gladz chuckled, shaking her head. “Not everyone wants their love life to be a soap opera.” Cassie shot up, eyes sparkling with mischief. “Well, you’re missing out. Love is supposed to be thrilling. The push and pull, the angst, the desperation—” She clutched her chest like some tragic heroine. “Will they? Won’t they? It’s the spice of life!” Mica snorted. “Cass, you’ve been watching too many trashy telenovelas.”

He looks so hot. He smirks at my reaction and leads me out the car. " Excited?" He asks and I nod. " You have no idea how excited I am." I reply and Lance chuckles,amused. " It's worth every excitement you feel, baby doll." We walk hand in hand into the building. When we step inside, I'm met with a classy atmosphere. A woman with a smile on her face welcomes us. " Welcome to Velvet house, Miss. First time? " She asks and I nod. She hands me a masquerade mask. " Put this on. You can remove it once you are comfortable to be seen by others. " She informs me and I nod.

“This isn't a sign is it?” “For what?” “How bad we are for each other.” “No,” Derrick muttered taking his hand when they walked down the street. “Let's go get a tree and decorations.” “I was wrong, we're perfect,” he whispered trailing after him when they went to find a tree, preferably fake, and found the right shop. “The tackier, the better!” Derrick’s eyes were about to roll out of his eyes sockets when Derrick picked out silver and gold tinsel, a star for the top, and a mix of different Christmas baubles.

Chapter 9 Most times, the most difficult moments in one's life are when you are in a dilemma to make such risky decisions. As I lay restlessly in bed all night, lost in the depths of my thoughts, I weighed the precarious odds and potential benefits of my situation. The tangled web of relationships had captured me completely. Mr. Blackwood's relentless pursuit continued incessantly, despite our familial ties. I stood right near the edge of the velvet red carpet, my fingers digging tightly into the fabric of my trousers inside my pockets. I was wearing a perfectly tailored tuxedo, my bow tie straight and my hair neatly combed, but it was all a fake front. I had spent the entire evening standing out here on the cold pavement like a common spectator, watching billionaires, models, and international dignitaries glide past the velvet ropes.
