I have no idea what my brother wants to talk about, but I just nod because I have no secrets with her. “Sure,” I say and we tell Oliver to drive to the fountain, the main monument of my pack. It’s right in the center and huge. On the way there, my phone starts ringing with a call from Ash.

I replied without looking back as I walked towards the door. It was already late. Past midnight. The city had shrunk down to quiet streets and flashing signs. I parked a block away from the museum and walked the last few blocks. The old stone fountain sat behind the building, Its edges were chipped, and the water was dry, like memories that had been forgotten. I wonder why Aaron chose this place of all places. I had sent him a message to meet up as I walked out of the house and he asked to meet up here. With his dark coat zipped up and hair slicked back, Aaron leaned against the edge of the rim. He looked like we were still in the past.

I asked. “You’ll see.” “Hmmm.” He took my hand and I watched him drive down the street, pulling into a parking lot a few minutes later. I sat up straighter, looking around curiously for a moment before I sucked in air when I saw where we were. He had brought me to the large, majestic fountain by City Hall. I took his hand as he offered it to me before allowing him to lead me over to the fountain while I watched the fountain’s colors play off the water.

I felt like scaring him out the minute Zara would be away but the next thing tamed me like hell. He stretched me a piece of paper and when I glanced at his face, it felt like he was hastening it on me. "Meet me at Aqua Aura, by 10 tonight. I know what you are.."

I hope not. After letting ashes fall on the freshly scrubbed floor, Jordan says, “Meet me by the waterfall at 9 PM.” The waterfall is in the forest, about twenty minutes away from the pack. Jordan knows I can’t possibly make it on time. “Where Elly usually goes to dance?” I ask, wanting to be sure we are talking about the same place.

I could the smirk on her face even with the distance between us. I had so many questions. How did their world even collide? Was she her target the whole time? “I will be waiting by the fountain for your return. Both of you.” And I ended the call, worrying what they might have spoken about about. Where they could have possibly gone and what things they spoke about. In the end, all I could do was wait and find out by the fountain side where the amber water moved behind me from the stroke of my finger across the surface. “Old friend, I have missed you.”

This was not a conversation to be had on the side of a road, with the windows steamed up from my sobs. “Meet me by the Falls in an hour,” I said. “Okay.” It sounded as though he nodded, and then the line went dead.

There was no logic, no reason in it, nothing but a pure desire to feel alive. “We can meet at Springwater Park, near the fountain. Tomorrow at noon,” I sent the message. I chose the public place with clear and visible area. It was never too crowded but all the visiting families with kids, exercising runners, and people walking out their dogs, were more than enough for being witnesses if something bad was about to happen. “OK. Meet you there. Look for Chinese guy in blue cap, ” the person replied. It was only then I realized that it is actually happening. The chills run down my spine. There was no turning back. I was about to meet a gang member or maybe someone equally frightening.

“The fountain” POV Samatha I find the fountain pictures put away in a drawer. Probably by Kat or Amanda at some point. I find a fountain that is almost identical to the one back home with Cupid and his bow and give it to Theo. “A symbol of romantic love. Why am I not surprised? This weekend, they will deliver and set it up. I’m heading out-of-town Friday to take care of a few things. I’ll be back on Sunday. Promise me, Sam, you won’t go near the palace until I’m back. I want us to see it together for the first time.”
