CHAPTER 21

CHAPTER 21The High Council gathered under the Haloed Dome, where light bled down from unseen heavens. Their faces were grave, their wings dimmed, the room choked with thick unease.“It’s happening,” Seraphiel said first, his voice slicing through the silence. “The prophecy has begun to manifest.”Murmurs rippled across the table — doubt, fear, anger.“But the vessel it chose—” Erelah shook her head sharply. “It is unacceptable. Fragile. Wrong.”“Unworthy,” Cassiel spat, thudding his fist against the marble. “The bulb bloomed for him? Impossible.”“He is weak,” murmured Uriel, his brow furrowed deep. “He knows nothing of power, nor destiny.”“Then why?” Raziel growled. His gold-edged wings twitched, a sign of his barely restrained temper. “Why would the signs align around him?”Silence fell again. From the shadows of the council rose the eldest of the Elders, draped in robes that shimmered like the edge of the universe."You are blind," the Elder said quietly. "You see the surface, th

CHAPTER 22

CHAPTER 22Elias stirred slowly, a dull ache pulsing through his body. His limbs were tangled in the sheets, the scent of Lucian—cold earth and something darker—clinging to his skin. Heat flushed his cheeks as memories flickered back. The way Lucian had touched him. Held him.Broken him apart and put him back together with terrifying gentleness. He shifted, feeling the soreness deep in his bones. Every brush of fabric made him wince—and made him remember.God, he couldn’t even look—He froze.Lucian was there, lying next to him. Still as death, barely breathing.Elias swallowed hard, heart hammering. "Lucian," he croaked out.Lucian’s eyes flicked open. Blank. Cold. “Morning,” Lucian said, voice like smoke. Detached. As if nothing had happened.A sharp, embarrassing sting rose in Elias’s throat. “...That's it?” he whispered. “After everything?”Lucian pushed up from the bed, not meeting his eyes. "Rest."Elias shot upright, wincing. "That's all you have to say?"Lucian didn’t turn ar

CHAPTER 23

CHAPTER 23Lucian carried Elias in silence. Each step through the darkening forest was heavy with tension, though Elias barely noticed—his cheek pressed to Lucian’s chest, trying not to shake. He could still hear the voices from his dreams, still feel the phantom sting of a blade through his chest. Every few moments, Lucian’s grip would tighten protectively, grounding him.Kai was already waiting at the door, his brows furrowed, anxiety plain in his eyes.“What happened?” he asked the moment Lucian stepped into the light. “I felt your energy shift hours ago. And—” his gaze dropped to Elias, and his expression softened. “You look like hell.”“Thanks,” Elias muttered weakly.Lucian didn’t put him down until they reached the living room. He settled Elias gently on the couch, brushing the hair from his forehead before turning to Kai.“We need answers,” Lucian said tightly. “He had a dream—or memory, more like a vision. It ended with me—someone who looked like me—stabbing him.”Kai stiffene

CHAPTER 24

Elias said nothing. He was still too pale, his pulse unsteady against Lucian’s arm. But he hadn’t pulled away. He hadn’t tried to run. That, for now, was enough. The forest path below the temple was unnervingly silent. The air itself seemed to have grown heavier, every leaf and branch weighed down by what had just happened inside that ancient place. They walked in tense silence until they reached the old trail that would lead them out.And then—A voice.Faint and feminine. Ancient and near."Don’t go yet."Lucian stopped so fast Elias nearly stumbled into him.He turned his head slowly, scanning the trees. “Did you hear that?”Elias swallowed. “That wasn’t her again, was it?”“No. This… this was different.”There was no one there. Just trees swaying gently in the breeze, but the air had turned icy.Lucian narrowed his eyes. “Something’s not right.”The wind whispered again, like fingers brushing their skin."Wait."Elias took a step closer to Lucian. “Maybe it’s a warning.”Lucian no

CHAPTER 25

The next morningElias woke slowly. For a long moment, he didn’t know where he was.The world was warm, heavy, safe—Lucian’s scent wrapping around him like a blanket. He shifted a little and immediately winced. His body ached—in a way that was almost sweet—and the soreness between his legs made his heart clench with a sharp, helpless sort of tenderness.Elias blinked his eyes open.Lucian was awake. Of course he was.He was lying on his side, head propped up on one hand, just... watching Elias with an unreadable expression."You okay?" Lucian asked softly, voice still rough from sleep.Elias flushed immediately and pulled the blanket up over his face.Lucian chuckled low, deep in his chest."That’s a dangerous sound," Elias mumbled under the covers, heart pounding.Lucian reached under the blanket, curling his fingers gently around Elias’s wrist, tugging until he peeked out again."Talk to me, sweetheart," Lucian said, eyes dark and serious. "How do you feel?"Elias bit his lip. "Sore

CHAPTER 26

The lead priest stepped forward, robes whispering over the stone. His voice was calm, almost bored."A routine check," he said. "Nothing more. Standard procedure for manors suspected of harboring...unauthorized vampires."Lucian’s jaw tensed. "We weren't scheduled for a check till 3 days from now."The priest smiled thinly. "Things change. Surely you understand."Kai leaned close, muttering, "This smells like shit, Lucian."Lucian didn’t reply. His fingers tapped a slow rhythm against his thigh—his tell for barely restrained rage. The priest continued smoothly. "Open your doors to us. Cooperate. It’ll be over quickly."Lucian’s eyes flickered to Elias.Elias stood stiffly beside him, hands clenched at his sides. His heartbeat thundered in his own ears.Lucian made his decision."Elias," he said quietly. "Go upstairs."Elias blinked. "But—""Go," Lucian said firmly, voice leaving no room for argument. "Stay in your room. Lock the door."Kai added under his breath, "And don’t open it un

CHAPTER 27

Lucian slammed the front door shut behind them, locking it out of pure habit, even though it wouldn’t stop what was coming."We need to move. Now," he barked.Kai was already pacing like a caged animal, sparks of magic flickering at his fingertips."Pack the essentials," Kai said. "Weapons. Blood. Anything we can't replace."Lucian grabbed Elias by the wrist, towing him toward the stairs."Get your coat," he said gruffly. "Warm clothes. We’ll be running for a while."Elias blinked up at him. "Where are we going?""Kai's," Lucian said. "It’s the closest safehouse."At that, Kai coughed awkwardly."Uh... slight problem with that plan."Lucian froze mid-step."What problem?"Kai rubbed the back of his neck, avoiding Lucian’s gaze."I may or may not currently be...uh...on the run myself."Lucian turned fully to him, eyes narrowing to slits."From who?"Kai grimaced. "A dragon."Silence fell.Elias blinked. "A real dragon?"Kai nodded solemnly. "Big. Scaly. Breathes fire. You know. Dragon.

CHAPTER 28

CHAPTER 28The moment they stepped into the massive iron gates of Dorian’s Manor, it was clear the night wasn't going to get any calmer.Dorian appeared at the top of the grand staircase, his dark brow raised, surprise flashing in his green eyes. His gaze fell on Elias first, and he stilled.“Elias?” Dorian said, disbelief lacing his voice.Without hesitation, Elias bolted up the steps and threw himself into Dorian’s arms.Dorian staggered back a step, patting Elias’s back awkwardly. “Okay... this is happening,” he muttered.Lucian growled low in his throat, fangs almost snapping forward.Kai snorted loudly and leaned against the doorway, smirking. “Relax, he’s not trying to steal your boyfriend.”Dorian, smirking, shoved Elias back lightly. Then he turned and smacked Kai upside the head. “And you shut the fuck up.”“Ow, damn!” Kai rubbed the back of his head, glaring. “Violent bastard.”“What's going on?” Dorian asked, serious now.Lucian glanced at Kai before speaking. “We need to c

CHAPTER 29

CHAPTER 29As soon as Lucian shut the door behind them, he turned on Elias, his crimson eyes dark and burning."How do you know Dorian?" Lucian asked, stepping closer until Elias had nowhere to go, his back pressed against the wall.Elias blinked up at him, innocent and wide-eyed. "He...he usually comes to the Everstone mansion for the balls. I've met him a few times. He's always been kind."Lucian scoffed, leaning in so close Elias could feel the growl vibrating in his chest. "Kind, huh?"Elias bit his lip. "Yes. And he always brought me sweets."Lucian rolled his eyes, muttering under his breath. "Soft-hearted fool."Before Elias could say anything else, Lucian grabbed him by the waist and yanked him closer, crushing their bodies together. Elias gasped but melted against him, tilting his head up, offering himself without hesitation."You're mine," Lucian growled against his lips, possessive and raw."Yours," Elias whispered back, his hands sliding up Lucian's chest.Their mouths col

CHAPTER 30

CHAPTER 30“Kai!” Dorian’s voice was sharp, panicked, as Kai’s body slumped over the bed. The mermaid beneath him blinked weakly, the shimmer of her tail fading entirely into legs. Her breathing had steadied, but Kai’s hadn’t.Lucian was already moving, catching Kai before his head hit the floor. “Idiot,” he muttered, lowering him gently. “You always overdo it.”“He used too much energy,” Elias said softly, kneeling beside Lucian. His fingers brushed over Kai’s damp forehead. “He barely had anything left.”Dorian hovered like a stormcloud, eyes scanning Kai’s unconscious face. “He’ll be okay, right?”“He’s strong,” Lucian muttered. “Stupid, but strong.”Elias looked up at Dorian. “He saved her.”“Yeah, and almost killed himself in the process,” Dorian snapped, standing up suddenly. His jaw was tight, a rare burst of frustration breaking his usual calm. “I told him to stop throwing himself into danger like he’s invincible—”“You care about him,” Elias said, watching him.Dorian froze.
