CHAPTER 29

As soon as Lucian shut the door behind them, he turned on Elias, his crimson eyes dark and burning.

"How do you know Dorian?" Lucian asked, stepping closer until Elias had nowhere to go, his back pressed against the wall.

Elias blinked up at him, innocent and wide-eyed. "He...he usually comes to the Everstone mansion for the balls. I've met him a few times. He's always been kind."

Lucian scoffed, leaning in so close Elias could feel the growl vibrating in his chest. "Kind, huh?"

Elias bit his lip. "Yes. And he always brought me sweets."

Lucian rolled his eyes, muttering under his breath. "Soft-hearted fool."

Before Elias could say anything else, Lucian grabbed him by the waist and yanked him closer, crushing their bodies together. Elias gasped but melted against him, tilting his head up, offering himself without hesitation.

"You're mine," Lucian growled against his lips, possessive and raw.

"Yours," Elias whispered back, his hands sliding up Lucian's chest.

CHAPTER 30“Kai!” Dorian’s voice was sharp, panicked, as Kai’s body slumped over the bed. The mermaid beneath him blinked weakly, the shimmer of her tail fading entirely into legs. Her breathing had steadied, but Kai’s hadn’t.Lucian was already moving, catching Kai before his head hit the floor. “Idiot,” he muttered, lowering him gently. “You always overdo it.”“He used too much energy,” Elias said softly, kneeling beside Lucian. His fingers brushed over Kai’s damp forehead. “He barely had anything left.”Dorian hovered like a stormcloud, eyes scanning Kai’s unconscious face. “He’ll be okay, right?”“He’s strong,” Lucian muttered. “Stupid, but strong.”Elias looked up at Dorian. “He saved her.”“Yeah, and almost killed himself in the process,” Dorian snapped, standing up suddenly. His jaw was tight, a rare burst of frustration breaking his usual calm. “I told him to stop throwing himself into danger like he’s invincible—”“You care about him,” Elias said, watching him.Dorian froze.

CHAPTER 31 Later, Kai let out a groan from the couch, one arm flung dramatically over his face. “I’m starving,” he whined. “I just healed a goddamn mermaid. I need meat. And cake. Something sweet. With a little blood on the side.”Dorian, standing beside the fireplace, sighed. “You’re always starving, even when you’re full.”Elias smiled and nudged Dorian lightly. “Come on. Let’s go fix something for him.”“Okay,” Dorian said with a smirk as he led the way to the manor’s massive kitchen. The place was rustic, sleek, a blend of old-world charm and modern enchantments. The overhead lights glowed with a soft blue hue, and the marble counters gleamed.“So,” Elias started as he pulled out ingredients—eggs, tomatoes, cured meats, and some vegetables that shimmered with slight magic, “how did you three become friends? Like real friends?”Dorian’s lips curled slightly, amused. “You mean how did a demon-witch hybrid, a vampire-healer, and the coldest bastard on earth end up under one roof?”E

CHAPTER 32“I swear,” Dorian muttered as he stepped into the kitchen, shirtless and cranky, “that party was a fucking disaster. There are three bodies outside. Three.”Kai, seated cross-legged on the counter, yawned dramatically. “Oh please, three’s nothing. Remember the New Moon Bash? Ten bodies. And two were still twitching.”Dorian scowled. “This isn’t a competition, Kai.”“I mean, if it was, you’d still lose,” Kai quipped with a wink.Lucian entered silently, dressed in black from head to toe, eyes sharp and unreadable. He moved toward the window, looking out.Elias followed, rubbing his eyes, hair a mess. “Morning,” he muttered, stretching.Dorian turned toward him, gesturing outside. “What the hell am I supposed to tell the Council if they show up? Lucian raised a single hand and snapped his fingers.Outside, the morning fog suddenly shifted into thin trails of black smoke rising from the corpses. The stench of char and magic drifted faintly through the air.Elias blinked, star

CHAPTER 33The laughter from breakfast had faded like smoke in the wind. The parlor was dim, windows drawn, the ancient chandelier overhead casting dull amber light across the long table. Dorian set down a thick, worn book with a heavy thud. Dust rose from its cracked leather cover, and Lucian and Kai stood silently behind him as he opened it.Elias watched, his arms crossed, his fingers still tingling from the pan incident.“This is the Viritas Codex,” Dorian said. “Oldest surviving classification of all known bloodlines and species. Vampiric, demonic, angelic, shifter, fae, witch-kind, hybrids. It’s what we use to identify anomalies.”Kai added quietly, “Even ones that haven’t walked the world in centuries.”Dorian flipped through the pages with a sharp flick of his fingers. Symbols glowed faintly along the edges—wards. Protection against what was written inside.Lucian finally spoke. “You don’t match any signature I’ve encountered. CHAPTER 34There was mad tension in the air.The kind of tense that sat heavy in the air, pressing against skin and bone, refusing to ease. But the trio—they could never stay away from each other for long.Lucian was the first to move.He descended into the basement like a shadow. He knew Dorian would be here, it was his thinking space. Dorian was sitting at the far edge, arms folded, still staring at the scorch mark Elias had carved into the wall hours earlier.Lucian didn’t speak at first. Just stood near him, silent.“I thought you were still pissed,” Dorian said without looking up.“I was,” Lucian replied. “Still am. But I know why you did it.”Dorian finally looked up, something close to guilt flashing across his face. “You think I was too harsh?”Lucian shrugged. “I think you’re an asshole. But you're also not wrong.”Dorian gave a humorless chuckle. “And here I thought I’d get chewed out.”“I wanted to,” Lucian said simply. “But we’re not boys anymore.”“No, we’re not.” Dorian

CHAPTER 35The room was cold. Not because of the weather—but because of him.Tristan Everstone sat on the edge of his bed, eyes fixed on the ground, unmoving for what felt like hours. Days had passed. Maybe more. The once pristine chamber of the Everstone heir now reeked of something ancient, heavy, and wrong. The curtains were drawn, the mirrors shattered. Shadows stretched along the walls unnaturally, almost like they were breathing. And his right arm?Blackened. It pulsed—alive—veins etched with crimson cracks that glowed faintly under the skin. The corruption had begun weeks ago, but now it crawled past his elbow. He flexed the fingers of his left hand—the normal hand—and let out a low, humorless chuckle.“Who does he think he is?” Tristan whispered, his voice hoarse. “Father. Acting like he gets to decide who I should bow to. Like Elias mattered before all this.”A bitter taste flooded his mouth. Elias. That cursed servant with secrets hidden beneath that fragile skin. Scales in the right places, tongue like fire, literally.”Dorian raised a brow. Kai grinned. “She wasn’t a full dragon, just a half-blood. I told you. But damn, Dorian, you should’ve seen her—”“I didn’t even see the dragons at the party,” Dorian cut in, tone dry as ever.Kai shrugged, licking something off his finger. “Guess they only come out for the interesting ones.”Dorian rolled his eyes, reaching for his coat. “You said you needed to restock some of your healing supplies?”“Yeah.” Kai tapped his neck. “And I’m low on elixir too. Want to come?”Dorian gave him a once-over. “Someone needs to make sure you don’t get sidetracked by another scaled temptress.”Kai laughed and headed to the front entrance, Dorian right behind him. “You’re always so dramatic.”They both reached the massive door at the front of the mansion. Barely a whisper. But his eyes were open—glazed, yet conscious. His breathing was uneven, but stronger than before.Dorian leaned in quickly. “Kai—hey. You’re awake.”Kai swallowed, reaching weakly toward him. “Don’t leave.”“I’m not going anywhere,” Dorian said softly, grabbing his hand and squeezing.Kai blinked slowly, eyes fluttering shut again before opening just slightly. “Thought I was gonna die…”“You didn’t.” Dorian’s voice was low. CHAPTER 51Elias stood near the edge of the ruined village, breathing hard. His hands wouldn’t stop shaking. The others were talking—quiet, distant murmurs behind him—but their voices blurred into meaningless sound. All he could hear was the rush of blood in his ears, the pounding of a headache that had crawled behind his eyes and made a home there. And the echo.Unwanted.The word had lashed across his mind like a whip, dragged from the pit of a memory he didn’t remember asking for.He could still see her face. Isadora, kneeling beside him as a child. Her hand on his. Her voice—too gentle to belong to the woman who had nearly killed Lucian, who had tortured and murdered people just to draw him out.Yet it had been her.And then—His mother. Her face had appeared like a ghost, etched in fire, in rage, in rejection. Not the soft, blurry memory he had invented for himself. No. This was real. Her lips curled in disgust. Her voice—cold, unflinching. He’s a mistake. That thing should never

Just enough to see the flashes behind his eyes. The sigil had worked. The memory had resurfaced. But it was too soon. She spun, her bootsteps echoing through the chamber. “What the hell is wrong with that stupid man?” she hissed, slamming her palm against the edge of her altar. “Gabriel. Always so noble. So moral. So—so predictable it’s disgusting.”A low snarl escaped her throat as her fingers curled around a blackened bone on the altar’s edge. The object pulsed beneath her grip—once belonging to a daemon of truth. She nearly crushed it.“He let him walk into Trenna.” Her voice d

He rubbed his temple and stepped into the living room.Lucian and Dorian entered next, voices low as they spoke between themselves.“You’re up early,” Lucian said as he glanced at Gabriel. “Planning to disappear without saying goodbye?”Gabriel smiled faintly over the rim of his mug. “Perish the thought. I have a call to answer. A village summoned me. They've got a sickness that their local healer couldn’t manage.”“A sickness?” Dorian raised an eyebrow. “What kind?”Gabriel shrugged. “No idea until I see it. But if it was simple, they wouldn’t have needed me.”Kai padded i

The storm of the evening had passed, but the house hadn’t yet exhaled. It was still holding its breath.Elias had been brought home—his body limp but alive, his breathing steady. Lucian had refused to leave his side. Gabriel stood watch at the door, unreadable. And Kai had paced for hours before finally collapsing on the couch. But Dorian never came to bed.Kai stirred from half-sleep, bleary eyes catching the faint glow of a lamp deeper into the study. He stood quietly, tugging his robe closed as he moved toward the light. He found Dorian seated in a high-backed chair, legs crossed, a leather-bound tome in his lap. His fingers weren’t even turning the page.“You’re not reading,” Kai murmured.Dorian didn’t flinch. “I’m keeping watch.”Kai stepped closer. “He’s safe, Dorian. Lucian’s with him. Elias felt all the air leave his lungs. Lucian immediately straightened beside him, eyes darkening.“What do you mean?” Lucian asked, voice low.“I tracked the serpent’s movement,” Gabriel said. “It followed Elias’s magical trail through the mansion. It was waiting near his room.”Kai swore under his breath.“But Lucian passed through the hall first, while we were looking for the source of the slithering” Gabriel continued. “He intercepted it by accident. The snake struck at the nearest source of power when it got confused.”Elias swallowed hard. “If I’d been there…”Lucian grabbed his hand tightly. “Then you would’ve been the one poisoned. CHAPTER 46The world was pale and quiet again.Elias stood in a field of white grass, windless and still. The sky above him was colorless—no sun, no moon. Just a hollow dome of muted grey, as if reality had forgotten to paint itself. His breath came out in puffs he couldn’t feel.“I’m dreaming again,” he muttered, and his voice didn’t echo. It fell dead into the ground.“You always are, little spark.”The voice slipped through the air like silk on skin.Elias turned. There she was.The Oracle. She stood at the center of the field, draped in layered silks that moved like water though there was no breeze. Her eyes were too bright for the world around her—like shards of crystal suspended in oil. She did not smile.“Why are you here?” Elias asked, wary. “What now?”The Oracle tilted her head, almost sympathetically.“Because the threads are tightening around your throat,” she said gently. “Because the serpent’s fang has struck, and still… you hesitate.”“I didn’t ask for this.” His voice

Sigils pulsed, twitching in slow, molten red. The fire at the center was not natural—it crackled without wood or fuel, dancing in shades of green, violet, and deep, churning black.Isadora stood in the center, barefoot, blood-streaked, and trembling with fury.“Ungrateful little wretch,” she hissed, tossing a curled lock of hair into the fire. It hissed, sparked, and filled the room with the smell of scorched rosemary and rot.“He looks at me like I’m some thing, like I didn’t cradle his soul in my palm before he was even born.” She paced around the circle, her hands stained with fresh blood. “I visited him. I warned him. In his dreams, I whispered of the great and terrible things to come. Did he listen? Did he bend?” She stopped, eyes flashing. “No. He clung to them. To the weak,

The chamber is almost ready—if I leave now, I can stabilize him within the hour.”He turned toward the still-open portal, but Elias raised a hand, eyes flashing.“Wait.”Gabriel halted mid-step. “Elias—”“No,” Elias said firmly. “Something’s… shifting.”Before anyone could respond, Elias’s head snapped back and an eerie glow flooded his eyes. A surge of invisible energy blasted through the house with a loud thrum, shaking the very walls. The candles around the room flickered violently before dying out.“Vol’sharaan ektu lae… veyr ashenai.” The words spilled from Elias’s mouth in a tongue none of them recognized—ancient, rhythmic, and terrifyingly powerful.
