CHAPTER 041 - TERMS OF COEXISTENCE

Finally, after what seemed like ages, Lorenzo leaned back in his chair and shook his head slightly. "We'll still be together until the baby is born," Lorenzo acknowledged wearily. "Up until then, I want daily updates on your health. I don't want to be excluded from any bit of news no matter how trivial you may think it is." "I don't understand what you'd hope to gain from such an arrangement," Sarah said, confused and frustrated by how adamant Lorenzo was being on this point. "Absolutely nothing," Lorenzo murmured. "But what do you stand to gain by keeping me out of the loop?" Absolutely nothing, and Lorenzo knew it; Sarah had no reason other than pure contempt to refuse his request. "Fine," Sarah said begrudgingly. "I’ll keep you updated but I want your word that you won't interfere in any part of my pregnancy and that you'll remain a casual observer." "How can you expect me to make a promise like that?" Lorenzo asked hoarse and pained. "I am not a casual observer, Sara

CHAPTER 042 - THE SPACE BETWEEN MOVES

Lorenzo sat down on the sofa and leaned toward Sarah, very gently nudging the glass of orange juice in her direction again. Sarah shot him a warning glance, and Lorenzo grinned slightly. "I'm not trying to bully you into drinking a glass of orange juice, Sarah ," he said softly. "I just thought that you looked a bit parched." Sarah gritted her teeth and sheer perversity kept her from picking up the glass and quenching her thirst. Lorenzo said nothing further, merely leaned back in his chair with a soft sigh. "So what did the doctor really say yesterday?" He asked after a pause. "I'm slightly anemic and that's what's causing the dizziness. He adjusted my diet to include more iron," Sarah responded quietly, and Lorenzo nodded. "Everything else is normal?" Lorenzo asked after another short pause. "Yes." "You'd tell me if it wasn't?" "Yes." Lorenzo seemed satisfied with her answer and smiled slightly. "Thank you." Sarah sighed and nodded an acknowledgment of his thanks.

CHAPTER 043 - THE DOOR BETWEEN US

"That's a terrific idea." Lorenzo nodded eagerly. "We could go shopping for furniture and toys, I saw this huge panda bear at a toy shop a week ago that would be perfect for a baby." Lorenzo’s enthusiastic response completely threw Sarah and she stared at Lorenzo blankly for a few moments. "A toy shop?" Sarah asked, and Lorenzo went slightly red. "There's one close to the office and I've visited it a couple of times during my lunch hour," Lorenzo admitted. "Just to see what kind of toys and things babies need these days." Sarah had no clue how she was supposed to respond to that. Should she be concerned that Lorenzo seemed to be taking more than a casual interest in the baby or should she be pleased? And how on earth was she supposed to react to Lorenzo’s assumption that they would be decorating the nursery together? Sarah’s emotions were in such turmoil that in the end, she said nothing and shoved it aside to be processed later. Lorenzo, sensing the shift in her mood and s

CHAPTER 044 - DISHEARTENED

"I won't be able to go to the doctor with you today, Sarah," Lorenzo informed Sarah while they were having breakfast in the sunny conservatory the following morning. Sarah would never have admitted it, but she had really been relying on having Lorenzo there that day. Sarah was in her sixteenth week of pregnancy and had been scheduled for a precautionary amniocentesis that day. She was a nervous wreck about the procedure and even though Sarah knew the risk of complications was very low, it was still there. While her logical mind told her that her baby would be fine, she was still dreading the possible outcome of the test. Lorenzo had been a rock during Sarah’s first ultrasound the month before, holding her hand while Lorenzo listened to the whooshing sound of their baby's heartbeat for the first time and squeezing it tightly when they had seen of the fragile fluttering on the black-and-white monitor. The doctor hadn't been able to determine the baby's sex or designation but Sara

CHAPTER 045 - HOSPITAL AND BIG NEEDLES

Elisa was unable to join Sarah for the amniocentesis; Ricky had a medical checkup and naturally that took priority. So Sarah found herself waiting alone, a nervous wreck even though she knew that the odds of anything going wrong were slim. She fidgeted, flipped through magazines, and chatted with other women in various stages of pregnancy, but through it all she just wished that Lorenzo was there with her. The other omegas were all accompanied by their mates or friends, and Sarah had never felt so achingly alone before. She was so deeply buried in her thoughts that she didn't even notice the person sitting down next to her until Lorenzo’s deep voice rumbled in her ear. "Why is your cell phone off? I've been trying to reach you all morning." Sarah jumped in fright before blinking up at Lorenzo stupidly, not quite sure how he came to be there. Lorenzo grinned down into her confused face and Sarah found herself responding helplessly to the open warmth of that smile, rewarding

CHAPTER 046- BREAKING POINT

"We should have your results in a couple of weeks," the Doctor continued cheerfully. "We'll contact you when they arrive." "Do you think I'm at risk for another miscarriage?" Sarah suddenly asked, and the doctor looked surprised by her question. "Not at all." He shook his head vehemently. "But the last time..." Sarah began shakily. “...was just one of those tragic things that sometimes happen in life. You're healthy and your baby looks healthy. There's absolutely no reason you shouldn't carry to term and deliver a perfect baby. Now onto happier topics; would you like to know the baby's sex or designation? The Doctor said cutting her off. "You could tell?" Sarah asked with a smile. "The image was as clear as a bell today." He nodded indulgently. "No." Lorenzo shook his head. "I'd rather not know." "But Lorenzo..." Sarah turned to him in surprise but Lorenzo refused to meet her eyes. "Why don't you want to know?" "It makes no difference." Nothing Lorenzo could hav

CHAPTER 047 - A WRONG ASSUMPTION

"When I said she shouldn't overtax herself, I meant both physically and emotionally, Mr. Matteo." Sarah heard the sharp admonishment in the slightly familiar voice and frowned as she tried to hear over the weird buzzing sound in her head. "What on earth were you thinking, upsetting your omega like this less than half an hour after the procedure she'd just been through?" "Will she be okay?" Sarah heard Lorenzo’s unusually subdued voice over the rapidly subsiding buzz and she wondered at the strange panicky edge in it. It didn't sound like Lorenzo in the slightest. "He bled a little, which is never a good sign. I'm not willing to take any chances, not after this. I want her to remain in bed for at least a week. Complete bed rest." "I can't stay in bed all week," Sarah protested, opening her eyes. Lorenzo surged forward and tightened his grip he had on one of her limp hands. "Dio!! Tesoro, thank God! How are you feeling?" Lorenzo asked, frantically looking at her everywhere.

CHAPTER 048 - TRUTH WRAPPED IN SILENCE

Sarah was lost in thought, humming a gentle lullaby while she continued to stroke the small baby bump, when she gradually became aware of a presence in the open door. Sarah gasped in surprise, not sure how long Lorenzo had been standing there. Lorenzo stepped forward almost reluctantly, his handsome face more grim than usual. For a man who usually had his emotions sealed up tight, he looked like someone who was struggling mightily to keep his expression absolutely neutral. But the muscles bunching in his jaw, the cords tightening in his neck, and his thinned lips were strong indicators of how hard he was fighting to keep whatever he was feeling hidden. Fascinated by the incredibly bad job Lorenzo was doing of pretending to appear completely detached, Sarah was still absently running a hand over her stomach when she gasped and jumped for a completely different reason. All pretense of detachment tossed aside, Lorenzo’s face paled and his eyes darkened in alarm as he surged toward

CHAPTER 049 - HELIUM BALLOONS AND SWEET GESTURES

"Is this a private conversation or can anyone join in?" Luke interrupted Sarah’s musing drily and she blinked up at Luke. "I think you're overanalyzing. From what Elisa tells me he was desperate to cancel that debt. Elisa thinks, and I'm inclined to agree after what I just saw, that Lorenzo wants a clean slate with you but doesn't really know how to go about it." "Well, I live with him and I know you're both wrong," Sarah maintained stubbornly, shoving all those Scrabble and chess nights to the back of her mind determinedly. Sarah tried not to think about the companionable meals and the silent support that Lorenzo had lent her at every doctor's appointment. "He's in love with someone else. I'd say another woman, only in this case, I think I'm probably the other woman." "What the hell is that supposed to mean?" both Elisa and Luke asked furiously. "He was in love with her before my father forced him into this marriage. She's the woman he wants to have a family with. I'm the

CHAPTER 050 -HELIUM BALLOONS AND SWEET GESTURES

Now that nobody was around to witness it, Sarah felt free to laugh at the image Lorenzo presented. He looked like an underdressed, forlorn clown with those balloons clutched in his hand. "What?" Lorenzo asked, the grim facade melting away in the face of Sarah’s amusement. "It's just...those balloons, Lorenzo." She snorted, trying to control the giggles. Lorenzo’s own devastating grin lit up his face. "I know, right?" Lorenzo shook his head sadly as he tied the balloons to Sarah’s bedpost. "A hospital without a single 'get-well-soon' balloon in sight. Craziness." "Thank you for them anyway. They always brighten up a room." "I remember you saying that when you talked about a friend's tenth birthday party. You wanted some for your own..." But Sarah hadn't even had a party that year, much less balloons. She didn't even know why she'd confessed that sorry tale to Lorenzo. There was an awkward silence while Lorenzo stood hovering by her bedside. "You don't have to stay, Loren
