CHAPTER 031 - WHEN AFFECTION FEELS LIKE A WEAPON

In a year and a half, during which time Lorenzo and Sarah had sex on average four times a week and at least twice a night on each of those occasions, this was the first time...ever that Lorenzo hadn't recited his standard mantra. Lorenzo shifted slightly to arrange Sarah more comfortably against him, one arm tucked beneath Sarah’s head and the other resting heavily across her soft chest. Lorenzo’s fingers formed lazy circles on the overheated skin of Sarah’s upper arm, and he had his head on the same pillow as Sarah, so close Sarah could feel his still-unsteady breath feathering through her hair. Lorenzo occasionally dropped soft kisses onto the sensitive gland beneath her ear and along her delicate jawline. Sarah was tensing more and more in his arms, not sure how to react. First the kisses, then the earth shattering sex, then the absence of those five words, and now this unprecedented display of affection. It was as if, just when Sarah found a way to protect her already batte

CHAPTER 032- SHATTERED MORNINGS AND SILENT TRUTHS

Sarah woke up in the guest bedroom the following morning...alone with a small bunch of white tulips beside her pillow. She was both saddened and relieved by that. A quick glance at the clock told her that it was well after ten in the morning, and the gloom told her that it was probably raining. Sarah was shocked that she had slept so late and rushed through her morning ablutions while trying to ignore the ever-present queasiness. She gingerly made her way downstairs, feeling like someone with a hangover as she headed for the kitchen. Fortunately, no food smells were emanating from the room, but when she walked in, it was to find Lorenzo sitting at the breakfast bar and staring thoughtfully down at his full coffee mug. Lorenzo looked up when Sarah stepped into the room his eyes sweeping over Sarah’s figure, taking in the worn old jeans, faded sweatshirt, and battered little sneakers. "How are you feeling, ca...Sarah?" "Fine," Sarah mumbled, getting herself a glass of orange j

CHAPTER 033 - THE COST OF A CONTRACT

Lorenzo was as good as his word and mostly left Sarah alone to unenthusiastically browse around the upmarket boutiques in the very high-end shopping mall that Lorenzo had drive Sarah to. Sarah used the first ten minutes away from Lorenzo to buy the pregnancy kits, six of them, all different brands (who knew there were so many choices available?). Surprisingly Lorenzo did constantly call or text her to be sure that Sarah was okay and didn't need him, which got rather tedious after the tenth text message in forty minutes and the fifth call in an hour and a half. In the end, Sarah simply told Lorenzo that she was done shopping, and Lorenzo suggested they meet up and head to a restaurant for lunch. The upscale restaurant was obviously one Lorenzo often patronized, so, even though it was lunchtime on a Saturday afternoon and the place was exceedingly popular, they were seated immediately. Sarah watched the staff fawn all over Lorenzo and the omega bitterly wondered if he had brou

CHAPTER 034 - THE COST OF A CONTRACT II

The waiter swooped in with great flair and began to offload a tray of food onto their table. Lorenzo muffled a curse beneath his breath while he waited with barely concealed impatience for the younger woman to finish. "Will there be anything else?" "No!" Lorenzo barked, keeping his voice low and menacing. The poor woman gulped and beat a hasty retreat. Sarah barely registered the interaction between the Lorenzo and the waitress, her horrified eyes were focused on the gastronomic feast Lorenzo had ordered. Pastas, pies, fish, meat, and vegetables were laid out in front of her rebelling senses. "Sarah?" Lorenzo’s concerned voice seemed to come from miles away. "What's wrong?" "So much food," the younger said sickly, feeling in danger of losing the precious little she already had in her stomach. "I thought we could share," Lorenzo admitted. "I told you I wasn't hungry," Sarah said, her voice flaring weakly, angry that he expected Sarah to fall victim to yet another one of

CHAPTER 035 - UNFOLDING TRUTHS

"Lorenzo." Sarah cautiously breached the sanctity of Lorenzo’s study later that night. In all the time they had been living in the house, it was the first time Sarah had ever set foot in the study while he was in it. Lorenzo looked up to see her hovering uncertainly in the doorway and stood up abruptly, nearly sending his chair toppling. Sarah jumped backward at the sudden violent movement, but Lorenzo was around his desk in an instant and approaching Sarah with one hand outstretched. "Sarah," he intoned huskily. "Please come in." Lorenzo seemed almost eager to have her there. Not exactly the reception she was expecting. Lorenzo steered her toward the huge leather easy chair in one corner of the large study, seating her before taking the chair opposite her. Lorenzo leaned toward her, with his hands loosely clasped together and hanging down between his thighs. "I want to know why," Sarah whispered, after a lengthy silence. "I want to know what commodity you so casually traded

CHAPTER 036- THE THINGS LEFT UNSAID

"You still need to see a doctor," Lorenzo said softly, sounding strained, and Sarah nodded. "I've already made an appointment with Elisa’s doctor." Lorenzo sighed softly before agilely getting up and moving away from her chair and back to his own. "They would like you," Lorenzo suddenly said, his eyes intent on Sarah’s face. "What?" she asked distractedly. "My family," Lorenzo elaborated, and she frowned, not sure why he'd felt the need to say that. "I doubt that, Lorenzo. I don't think I'd feel any kind of charity toward someone who deliberately set out to trap my brother or son in a marriage he did not want, and I can't imagine your family doing so." "But you didn't..." "They think I did, and once you've made up your mind about someone, it's pretty hard to change it again." "It's not as hard as you think," Lorenzo said, half under his breath. "I don't know why you think you have to say stuff like this." Sarah shrugged dismissively "Soon we'll both be getting what

CHAPTER 037 - AVOIDING HIM

What are you doing here?" Sarah paused at the threshold to the kitchen and stared at the gorgeous man who stood in front of the open refrigerator wearing only baggy sweatpants. No shoes and no shirt. Lorenzo turned around slowly to meet her eyes, and Sarah swallowed past the huge lump in her suddenly dry throat; God, he was so much more beautiful than she remembered. Of course, Sarah felt unattractive and sloppy in the Sylvester the Cat silk shortie pajamas that she was wearing. Sarah knew that there was a sleep crease down the side of her face and that her hair closely resembled a bird's nest. "I live here," Lorenzo replied casually, one hand grasping a carton of orange juice and the other lazily rubbing back and forth over the rippled contours of his abdomen. Sarah’s fascinated eyes fell to that hand, and she imagined her own hand replacing Lorenzo’s. Sarah shook her head slightly to rid herself of the erotic image and focused on her outrage at seeing Lorenzo so casually s

CHAPTER 038 - DESIGNS OF HER OWN

“I was going to spend the morning with Elisa and her baby but before that I have someone coming for.. the thing I'm working on. She won't be in your way." Sarah said Elisa had given birth to a beautiful son just a couple of days after Sarah had her own pregnancy confirmed. "First of all, you live here. It's your house too, cara. You can have visitors." "Okay" Sarah nodded. "I can head out to the office, to give you privacy?" "You don't have to leave, although i'll need the den for space, and it'll probably take an hour or two." "Okay." "I'm designing a line of jewelry inspired from victorian era." Silence reigned as Sarah chewed another bite, her gaze on her plate. " Sarah. That's amazing. I'd like to see your sketches." "I'm not like those experts" Sarah’s stomach felt tight. Lorenzo touched her hand, his warm fingers scooping it up. "Hey. No self-criticism." Sarah tried to ignore the way his thumb traced tiny circles over her pulse point. "I've been studying onl

CHAPTER 039 - A VISIT WITH RAMIFICATIONS

"Mind if I tag along?" Lorenzo asked casually, when the Jeweler had just left and Sarah was going to get ready to visit Elisa, and Sarah frowned, disturbed by the notion of her husband ‘tagging along’ with her all afternoon. "Well..." Sarah began reluctantly. "I wanted to discuss some business with Elisa," Lorenzo added. "What business?" Sarah asked flatly. "It's about her loan," Lorenzo elaborated. "What about her loan?" her voice rose in alarm, but Lorenzo’s face remained impassive. "I won't have you upsetting her, Lorenzo." "What are you going to tell her? Sarah asked in a panic. "Nothing you should concern yourself with, Sarah, and I don't want to upset her," he dismissed. "Now why don't you hop into the shower while I clean up down here? I'll use one of the guest bathrooms this morning." Sarah shook her head desperately. "Lorenzo, you can't do this..." "Well, I have no aversion to doing a bit of housecleaning," Lorenzo said, deliberately misunderstanding. "Y

CHAPTER 040 - LOANS AND RESTORATION

Lorenzo left the living room and slowly inched his way toward the kitchen. Sarah was just outside the slightly ajar door when the sounds of their quiet voices finally reached her. "But I don't understand why now?" Elisa was asking, sounding annoyed but not upset. "And I still have at least a year within which to finish the loan. It's a substantial amount of money, Lorenzo." Sarah bit her lip, wanting to intervene but not sure how anything she could say or do would persuade Lorenzo to change his mind. Sarah felt helpless and furious and strangely hurt that Lorenzo would carry out his threat anyway. "It's my only real option right now, Elisa." Lorenzo’s deep voice rumbled quietly. "I gave you the loan for all the wrong reasons. Reasons which I now...regret. I can't in good conscience allow it to continue, I cannot have a clean slate until I rectify my mistakes." "So let me pay it, and we can put it behind us," Elisa implored, and Lorenzo said something that Sarah didn't quite
