Chapter 11

Waking up after falling asleep as a wolf always sucked.For starters, staying in wolf form for so long took a lot of energy out of us. Most people only stayed in it when needed, and they always made sure to load up on calories beforehand. For me, it felt like I didn’t sleep at all, and I was even hungrier than when I went to bed.Secondly, and more pressing at the moment, was the fact that I always ended up shifting back to my human form at some point while still asleep. Which meant I was naked and freezing when the alarm eventually went off.“This s-sucks,” I complained, shivering so bad that it was a wonder I could dress again. When I finally managed it, I sprinted back to the little gate under the house and went inside. After brushing my teeth and removing all the leaves and twigs out of my hair, I dressed and packed some spare cloths in a plastic bag since my backpack was still at school somewhere.Luna Lannie was in the dining room eating breakfast when I reported for inspection.

The school wasn’t very far from the Manor, only about a fifteen-minute walk.Both Chris and Misty received brand new cars when they turned sixteen, and they drove themselves and their friends too and from school every day. I would’ve preferred to take the shortcut through the forest to reach the school, but Misty forbid me from doing so once she started driving. Just so she and her friends could drive past me and laugh every morning.If I was lucky.If I wasn’t, then they would try to throw something at me instead. More than once I was burned by hot coffee, or bruised from being hit by some fruit or vegetable that came with their breakfast. One time I was hit by an apple, and it hit me just right to sprout a gash on the top of my head. Duncan and the other cubs were really sweet when I arrived.Not only did Duncan apologize again for hitting me, but they also showed me where they hid my backpack so no one would steal it until I came back for it. They were also really eager to start Club, and didn’t even complain this time when we started with the, boring, warm-ups and stretches. I would have to thank Mr. Davidson later, since it was clear he must’ve given them a stern talking to about behaving.Today, once some of the cubs showed they were ready for the next step, I had them pair off with each other and take turns practicing the moves we’d been practicing on a living target. Those I selected were overjoyed, and the ones I didn’t think were ready yet worked twice as hard so as not to be left behind. It took my entire three-hour shift to carry everything to where it needed to go.Since our Pack’s main source of income was in mercenary work, selling our Warriors to the highest bidders amongst other Packs and even to the humans, our Clinic always needed to be well stocked. Therefore, there was never a shortage of hard manual labor needed to keep things organized and stocked. However, I did take a small break to visit the Long Term Ward, where those with the more serious injuries were housed.I helped the nurses there for a while, doing what little I could, because I knew exactly how they must’ve felt. It was only a matter of time before I ended up in a place like this someday, thanks to my illness, and by helping them it helped me come to terms with my future. It also helped that they were always in high spirits, and could always make me laugh by the time I had to go. It felt like my heart was going to explode right out of my chest.For the first time since I was ten and first moved into this house, I was allowed to eat at the table with my family. Sitting next to Misty normally would’ve made me nervous, like it did at lunch today, but it was the person sitting across from me that held my whole attention.Even though I made a point to never actually look at him.Ben sat right in front of me, and my heart fluttered every time I felt his eyes on me, which meant it was fluttering nonstop. Despite the fact that I was wearing thinner cloths than ever before in recent memory, I felt like I was going to melt.“You look nice tonight, Ayla,” Ben said to me after about twenty minutes of making small talk with my parents. A dropped my spoon, it startled me so much.“Th-thank you,” I stammered out quietly, my eyes just barely peaking up to meet his, before darting back down to my tasteless soup. My usual shake had simply been put into a bowl and called soup.

Ben smirked at he as I looked up at him again after the silence dragged on for too long, a look of victory in his eyes.Turning towards father, he finally spoke. “Alpha Lord Grizzle, would you mind if your daughter Ayla walked me home? Luna Lannie, the meal was delicious, and I look forward to the next time I’m invited to the Manor. “Good, now that the charade is over, we can get down to business,” Ben said, rolling off of me and getting back to his feet. He didn’t offer a hand, and that was probably for the best. In our struggle, I could feel that my cut had reopened and blood had started to soak into the thin glove in my right hand. After getting to my feet, I tucked my arm behind my back to hide it.“Now, I will tell everyone that you successfully seduced me and that you were a lot of fun,” he said, each word a further stab to my heart. “That way your family won’t get mad that you failed in your mission. In return, however, you will tell me everything I want to know about your grandfather.”“Why are you so interested in him,” I said, my voice still so numb and cold. BenHe had to get away as fast as he could.For years now, he’d been fighting off girls trying to win his affection. When his brother was still alive, it was like a fun game that they played together, but since his death over a year ago, Ben killed that part of himself off.Or so he thought.This girl was good, very good, managing to hit him in all of his weak spots. The next two days were amongst the worst ever.Word spread like wildfire, and before I even stepped foot inside the school, everyone knew that Ben and I were a thing. Many of the guys who used to ignore me completely, even the ones who were cruel with their words, suddenly tried to hit on me. It was awkward, and with how little sleep I got, my mind couldn’t seem to find the words to respond.So, I just ducked my head and tried to flee whenever I could.That was bad enough, but nothing compared to the girls. With how much attention I was suddenly getting, not to mention the fact that many of the stronger females had their sights on Ben for themselves, I was declared enemy number one. I lost count of how many times I was tripped, had my belongings knocked from my hands, elbowed, had my hair pulled, ridiculed, or punished in some countless other ways.The worst was when Misty’s friends cornered me every time Ben pulled me away to some secluded room in the school for some alone time. “You look like shit,” Rosie said as soon as I walked into her clinic.“I’m sorry, the cubs are relentless in Club,” I said, breathing hard after having ran all the way here. I didn’t think I could handle getting cornered in the woods by Ben. It was bad enough that Rose could probably still smell his scent on me.Rosie looked around to make sure the coast was clear, before stepping closer. This was never a good sign, and I braced for whatever bomb she wanted to drop. “Please, Ayla, let me give you a checkup. I promise that no one will ever find out, and no matter what I find, it will just stay between you and me.”Placing my best smile on my face, I laughed and waved her concern away. “I’m fine, really. Where would you like me today, ma’am? Did that shipment come in this morning?”Rosie glared into my soul for the longest time before she sighed. “It’s already taken care of, but you can help out in L-Term.
