At first, she feared Liam had caught her, and she looked up sheepishly, expecting to see him standing over her with the remote in hand. Instead, she heard his fast, rhythmic breathing as he continued his shadow boxing or whatever he had moved onto for his workout. Juliet turned slowly, almost expecting to see Hawk's face on the television, but the screen was black. "Hawk?" She asked quietly again and jumped when words began to appear on the screen where the closed captioning would be. 'No touchy.' Juliet huffed, her eyelids dropping as she stood. "Mature." She said, propping her hand on one hip. Her wrist was still sore, but it had scabbed over nicely, and the bruises were fading to yellow. Her tongue moved to the front of her teeth as she considered what she wanted to say. "Is he okay?" She asked after a moment. It took a long moment for new words to appear, and her frustration increased as they did. 'Yes.' "Do you know where he is?" Juliet asked. The screen went

Matthew dug his knife into the man's gut, digging in further than the time before as his victim panted, tears streaming down his face. "I swear, I don't know anything." He pleaded, but Matthew didn't listen. He knew that was a lie and wouldn't stop until he got the truth. "We have gone over this. I don't like being lied to." Matthew hissed, throwing his fist into the man's face. The hilt of the knife intensified the impact, and the man's head shot backward with a loud crack as at least one bone in his face broke. "Fuck!" The man yelled just before a sob broke free of him.Matthew didn't want to kill him. It wasn't in his job description, but once his team found the body, they would know he was the one behind it. The man sitting in the chair before him sported several bruises and cuts, two missing fingernails, a gash across his shoulder, and half of his face had been smashed in. It was the same injuries they had l

Juliet narrowed her eyes when Liam came in for his shift a couple of days later, releasing Lucas. He had missed his shift the day before, causing Lucas to have to stay, and he was progressively getting grumpier the longer he was there. With the way he kept glancing at his phone, she figured he was probably missing Sophia. Lucas refused to admit anything was going on there, but it also didn't escape her notice that a couple of shifts, he had shown up with a to-go cup from Sophia's Sweets. Liam had dark circles under his eyes and was walking with a slight limp and a matching grimace of discomfort. He didn't jump into making her recite her new identity like he had during his last shift. In fact, besides a nod in her direction, he ignored her presence. Her first instinct was to start asking questions, needing to know what had happened if he had seen Matthew, and if Matthew was okay, but she was caught off guard by Liam going into the secure office and locking himself in there. Liam quickly pulled Juliet into the office, knocking the breath out of her from the sudden jarring pull. She felt like she was crossing into enemy territory as Juliet looked up to see several screens on, and while she wanted to be nosey, now wasn't the time. She spun around to ask him what he needed her to do to help, but the door was closing between them, and she heard the lock click into place as it latched shut. "Are you kidding me?" She asked, spinning quickly to scan the room, knowing there had to be a gun here somewhere. Juliet refused to go down without a fight, and if arming herself was an option, she would take it. Her first instinct was to check under the desk, but she didn't see anything. The smooth wooden drawers barely moved when she yanked on them, but she pulled several times anyway, hoping the lock would budge, but it was no use. There was a loud bang outside the room, and Juliet froze before moving faster, more frantically. Every drawer was locked, and

She didn't know how long they were moving for, but with every turn and hallway they passed, the faster she moved. Juliet hadn't heard anything, but with all the pitch-black tunnels they jogged past, she felt more paranoid, thinking someone would pop out of one any moment, having seen them rush by and chase after them. It didn't even have to be the people after her. She knew if the homeless population found these clean tunnels, they would probably take refuge in here as well. She doubted it, but she feared the possibility. The duffle at her side was becoming increasingly heavier with every step, and she tried her best to hold it tight to prevent it from being too loud while also trying to muffle her breathing. Yet, her out-of-shape panting was unstoppable as her still bruised and battered body protested the marathon Liam was having her run. When he finally slowed, she almost cried in relief but remembered that was one of his rules. No talking and no crying. She felt stup

Juliet stared at the side of Liam's head as he drove, trying to will him to tell her something more, but he kept his mouth shut until Sublime came on, and he started singing. It was like all of the tension from earlier had melted away, and she realized it was because he had gotten the fight he had been anticipating, maybe even craving. The way he had carried himself earlier was more like a soldier and a hardass than she had seen from him before. Now, he was back to himself, and she was stunned to see the two versions so night and day. "You knew." She accused, and he stopped singing. "You knew there was going to be an attack. Oh my God. Why did you just leave me out in the living room while you hid? Was I bait?" His jaw dropped open before he closed in quickly. Liam looked offended that Juliet had even asked, but it seemed like a logical question to her. There had to be a reason why he had hidden away for hours instead of acting the way he normally would have. "I didn't just leav

Matthew couldn't help the smile on his face as he ran down the alley, slowing only for a moment to turn a corner before taking off again. Rocks and dirt crunched beneath his feet, and while he wanted to lose his pursuers, he had no concern for being quiet. They knew who he was, the direction he was running, and he had limited options for where he could go by foot. The yellow glow of a street light at the end of the alley gave Matthew another burst of adrenaline that he used to speed up. He knew his ride would be waiting once he reached the street. Matthew burst through the end of the alleyway and skid to a stop, sending little rocks flying into the side of the familiar black car as it slammed to a stop before him. The windows were blacked out, but he knew it wasn’t bulletproof since it wasn't agency-approved. It was Hawk's personal car with a few home touches to hide his identity. Regardless, they needed to get away and fast. Matthew didn’t wait for an invitation from the d

Juliet wanted to cry as they walked into her new home. It wasn’t a forever home, nor was it the home of her new identity. Liam had told her it was another stronghold. One that no one knew the location of because the agency hadn’t even assigned it to her. Liam had taken it upon himself to select a new place for her to stay, and while it was beautiful, it was empty. Cold. There was nothing on the couch or counters, and she doubted there would be more than one bedroom as it had a similar feel to the house Matthew had been staying in. Juliet’s fingertips ran along the length of the granite countertop as she looked around while Liam cleared the bedrooms and bathroom. At just the right angle, she could see the subtle difference in the top of the television to show a camera there. After Liam returned, she moved from room to room and expertly began to find more. Surely, she hadn’t spotted all of them. Just enough to know they were being watched…. Or that they could be. What concerne

Matthew sat in the hallway with a nervous Hawk, both men sitting stiffly in the hard wooden chairs that lined the walls. He had always hated those chairs, wishing they would be upgraded with how much money the C.I.A. had and was constantly making or being given, but no. The sterile-looking hallway was all for show, too. He knew once he reached a private office or training room that it would be dirty, cluttered, and a bit disgusting. Hawk hadn't wanted to come, too scared that his career would be over before it had actually begun because he had gone against orders, but Matthew had assured him that the agency wouldn't let Hawk go. They needed someone with his skill set, and with how young he was and how long he still had before he could even consider retirement. The agency would use him until he had nothing more to offer, and then they would have him train his replacement before cutting him free. His position was safe, even if the job the position was for wasn't. The director calle

Juliet was surprised that they stayed so long. Was she happy to be in one place? Yes. Was she sick of the canned beans and rice in the pantry? Absolutely. She refused to look because she was pretty positive they had expired a long time ago. Still, she kept her mouth shut because she knew it was better than the MREs. "Morning," Liam said, bursting into the bedroom, and Juliet sighed as she stared at the ceiling in boredom. At least he didn't say it was a good morning. That would be an outright lie. She had been watching the news every morning and every night, but there had been nothing so far. "Hm," Juliet hummed. "Have fun," Liam said, dropping a box onto the bed beside her, and Juliet's eyes shot wide open. The familiar logo and shape made her giddy with excitement. Juliet had grown bored and was getting impatient to the point of anger as she waited to hear news about Matthew. It didn’t help that she had to spend time each day practicing her new signature and re
