Juliet sent her a smile and looked down at the name tag pinned to her lavender shirt as the woman wiped flour from her hands on a towel.  Sophia. She wasn't the one to write it, but Juliet remembered reading an article about the opening of a new café that had just opened a few weeks prior. She hadn't gone into the shop before her job hunt started, and now she wished that she had looked into the shop's history or at least tried some of the food before she came in for the interview. She felt unprepared and nervous.“Hi, I’m Juliet. I am here for an interview.” She stretched her hand across the counter, offering it to Sophia. She did not think the small woman’s smile could get any bigger, but it did. Sophia eagerly shook her hand. "Juliet! Please, take a seat anywhere. I'll be right around in

The next morning, she pulled on a simple pair of clean skinny jeans with a heather grey t-shirt. Sophia had not said if there was a dress code, so she tried to mirror the woman's clean and casual look from the day prior. She was unreasonably nervous, and her anxiety for the day to come made her forget about her morning coffee altogether. As she approached the storefront, the smell wafting toward her made her mouth water.  Sophia ran forward to the counter at the sound of the bell when Juliet opened the door, looking relieved to see her new employee.

"I moved here about two months ago. Between setting up my business and fixing up the lemon of a house I bought, I'm still living out of boxes." Sophia laughed and followed Juliet to the dining room to wipe down the tables and chairs."Well, if you need help with anything, just let me know. I could bring my roommate Natalie over and help with your house." She mirrored Sophia as she flipped the cleaned chair on top of the table. Juliet hoped to buy a house of her own one day where she could grow a garden and have a dog running through the backyard to chase away the birds. Living paycheck to paycheck off a minimal cafe salary wouldn't do the trick, but it was nice to dream about. The thought of Matthew coming home to her and their future dog flashed through her mind again. She quickly shook the image out of her head as she continued to work.

Juliet could see Matthew's exhaustion as she surveyed him in her periphery. His eyelids hung low, and his movements were tense as he leaned forward to grab another slice of pizza from the nearly empty box on the corner of her bed. The show that softly hummed through the television filled the otherwise silent bedroom, but she was unaware of what was playing, distracted by the perfect man next to her.He had just flown back that afternoon, and she was sure any sleep he may have gotten on the plane did little for him. Having him so close after a week and a half away was like breathing in fresh air after being trapped in a burning room full of smoke.

Red flag vs. red flag. They both had secrets they would need to come clean about. Juliet was just hoping Matthew's wasn't another family somewhere.Matthew made his way to the restroom, and Juliet pulled herself together and went to the kitchen to make coffee.  As the pot began to heat, Matthew walked into the room and sat at the breakfast bar, watching as she cut the first bagel in half to slip it into the toaster. Juliet tried to ignore the feeling of his eyes on her as she moved about the kitchen to grab a packet of hot chocolate powder to add to her coffee. They ate in silence, and Juliet felt tense in the quiet. She glanced at him as he took a large gulp of his coffee."How can you drink that?" She was unable to hide her disgust at the black liquid and relaxed when he let out a l

Juliet was lucky to make it to work on time and had an exhausting day. There was a constant line in the shop, and she did her best to stay focused, even though her head was filled with thoughts of Matthew in her bed that morning.A day had never moved slower as she counted down the minutes before she would see him again now that he was back.Juliet was surprised to see Natalie home so early, but as she examined the woman at the dining room table typing away on her laptop with a headset on, she quietly closed the front door behind her and tip-toed to her bedroom. It was clear that Natalie was in a stressful situation, but by the still-full cup of coffee on the table beside her, she had hoped that Natalie would be celebrating closing another loan tonight. Not long after Juliet showered and changed, Natalie barged into her room and threw herself on

While the restaurant they went to along the boardwalk has been great, Juliet had to say that their dinner tonight was even better. There was nothing that could compare to a good burger. The scattered peanut shells they walked through as they left the country-themed restaurant crushed under their shoes as they approached the door. A young hostess yelled for them to have a great night and to drive safely, but they both just nodded in response as they leaned into each other. Whether it was the food coma or the bliss of his arm wrapped around her waist that caused her ignorance of the turn in the weather, she would not know. As they opened the front door, a gust of wind ripped it from Matthew's grip, and it slammed against the wall.

Juliet stared through the open door of the mudroom at the blank white wall of the hallway. Matthew had stepped out to grab towels only a few minutes prior, but she was impatient for his return. When he gruffly asked her to wait there a moment, Juliet nodded between the shivers that wracked her body from the air conditioning hitting her wet skin. There was no doubt in her mind that he was cold, too, and she wanted him to wrap his arms around her so they could warm each other up. Instead, he brushed past her quickly, careful not to touch her.

It was perfect. Juliet had hated that she had no privacy living in her apartment and mentally added the wall to her wish list for her future home when she could afford one of her own. When she turned back around, a spot of color grabbed her attention. It was the only evidence that someone lived there. A thin, homemade-looking olive green crochet blanket was thrown over the back of the coffee-colored leather couch. It was soft to the touch and brought an uncontrollable smile to her face. She resisted the urge to wrap it around her shoulders and take in the warmth but instead continued to one-handedly towel dry her hair.“My mom made that for me when I moved out to live alone.” Juliet stepped back from the blanket. It took everything in her not to just ask him right then why he reacted

For a moment, Juliet couldn’t move as she stared into the camera lens with confusion. The realization of what she had been looking at hit her, and her green eyes widened as she dropped the black cloth back over the device.Immediately, Juliet had the feeling that she was going to regret exposing herself to the camera. Matthew must have covered it for a reason.  As she looked back down at the lock, she couldn’t help but wrap her fingers around the door handle to try and open it.  She knew that a door with multiple security measures was sure to be locked, and it was, much to her disappointment. Maybe it was her exhaustion or her curiosity, but she stared blankly at the door for a few moments longer, wondering what could be inside it before she turned and walked away. Muffled vibration from the room stilled her after a step,
