The morning light shines in through the crack in the dark green curtains that cover the bay window in Riley's room. It stirs Riley from her deep sleep, where she lays on her stomach on top of her queen size bed with her duvet tossed to the foot of the bed in a heaping mess. Her long, brown, naturally wavy hair flows in different directions as she peeks and shields her eyes from the sun. She had been dreaming of her 20th birthday that was coming up, which would signify her spot in the pack, and the first time she were to shift. "Riley! It's time to get up! We leave in 20 minutes," her dad yells at her door as he walks down the hall to start breakfast. Riley groans as she rolls onto her back. The past week flew by quickly. Riley kept her head down and worked hard on her studies. Dad agreed to her going out tonight as long as she kept focused. She had to let him know who she was going out with because word got out quickly about her date with Ethan last week. Beep, beep, beep... Riley hit the snooze button on her phone. Five minutes later, the same annoying alarm sounded, and this time, she didn't ignore it. It was 6 A.M. and she knew she needed to shower and get ready for her breakfast date with Ethan. As she got out of bed and headed towards the bathroom, she heard her phone vibrate, so she ran over and grabbed it to see, "Good morning, beautiful. Meet me at the diner in town for 8?". She beamed and replied with a "heart emoji, see you then," text right back. She placed her phone back down and grabbed her towel, heading for the shower. Once done, she went into her closet to find the perfect date outfit. She wanted to look effortlessly cozy, so she grabbed a beige knitted sweater and a pair of black tights, paired it with brown knee-high boots. Riley was ready to take off. School seemed to drag on all day. Everyone was super nice and wished her a happy birthday. It was probably because it seemed like everyone within the pack was invited tonight. Riley didn't mind, though. Tonight was going to be the best night of her life. She hadn't seen Ethan at all and was disappointed. So, she focused her energy on her classes and getting through the day. Once the final bell rang, she took off in the direction of home. When she arrived, she found a box outside the front door addressed to her. Riley grabbed it and rushed up to her room to open it. She sat on the floor at the edge of her bed and opened the box. Inside was a beautiful strapless emerald green cocktail dress. It was short, reaching about mid thigh, but flared out at the waist. It was tight around the top and had a sweetheart neckline. Since Riley was doing well in school, she had no problem with taking the day off. She hadn't been sleeping well. She felt tired and paranoid when she should have felt energized and excited. The last two nights, she even felt like there was someone watching her from a distance. She would look outside , peaking from behind her blinds, but couldn't tell where they were hiding. She would toss and turn all night dreaming of nothing but an endless void. Even Ava didn't want to come out and talk. Was there something wrong with her wolf? This was not what she pictured.
