CHAPTER 21

Dante My head was pounding something awful. I hardly slept much through the night. The nightmares had come non-stop. I kept waking up soaked in sweat, heart in my throat. I considered staying in that day and skipping class, but I immediately felt guilty about being so unserious on the second day. So I dragged my tired ass out of bed and trudged to the bathroom. The cold water did me little good. I was still sleepy and irritable by the time I was fully dressed for class. There was a veil of sadness in the air. I felt it immediately as I stepped out of the room. Something terrible had happened. My feelings were confirmed by the frantic whispers on the stairwell and long gloomy faces. A dark skinned girl silently shed tears as her friend wrapped her in her embrace. It seemed like someone had died. Someone popular. I didn't have to wait long to find out. I heard the name ‘Todd’ and the words, ‘Terrible, gnarly, police, burial.’ as I walked the long distance to the lecture hall

CHAPTER 22

Dante. “Um..yeah.” I replied, shuffling my feet awkwardly. There was something about her presence. She was shorter than most people in the hall at that moment but somehow, she made you feel small without even trying. “You two already know each other? Nice, “ Mateo smiled. “Uh, no we don't.” She wrinkled her nose. “He bumped into me after Ethics class yesterday.” She said with an accusing tone. “We bumped into each other.” I mumbled defensively, “It wasn't all my fault.” “Not how I remember it. I was minding my own business and he just slams into me on the stairs out.” She said to Mateo, rolling her eyes as if to say, 'can you believe this guy?!' “I was in a hurry. And you were too.” I was getting irritated. “And slammed? That wasn't what happened!” “Too much in a hurry to see where you were going, four eyes?” She sneered and Mateo snorted. “How does that make sense? You wear glasses too!” I threw my hands up in exasperation. “Alright alright alright. Pipe down kids.” M

CHAPTER 23

Asher. The school was thrown into mourning. Everyone knew Todd. Everyone liked him. A fellow housemate had found his body and screamed, alerting the rest of the house. The cops were called, his body taken to the morgue. I was long gone by then. I had stared at the body for a long time, my heart wrenching in two. Another person, dead because of me. There had clearly been a struggle. Todd didn't go down without a fight. But that would mean the rogue hunter came in his human form. Todd wouldn't be brave enough to fight an almost six foot tall wolf. He would know he didn't stand a chance. But a man, that was different. Dean fell silent within me but I could feel his grief. There was no need for words. Nothing could help now. I picked my way through the room to my backpack lying in the corner, untouched. I could feel the ebbing warmth from Todd's body. He hadn't been dead long. If only I had arrived ten minutes earlier. I couldn't be found there. I knew the police were going t

CHAPTER 24

Asher The memory tweak worked. Dean swore he still didn't know how exactly he did it but it had worked anyway, so I didn't bug him too much about it. But of course, the police had come looking for me. I made sure to be at school when they did. They came for me in class. Two burly men in tight uniforms and one smaller one with a nasal voice who appeared to be their leader. Just some routine questions in the event of the gruesome murder of Todd Hanley. Nothing more. There were whispers from students as I got up and followed them. I heard some say they weren't surprised. I looked like I was capable of murder. Certainly acted like it too. I ignored them. What else could I do? When we got out of the class, it seemed the entire school had come to watch the persecution of Asher Lowell. It didn't matter that I wasn't in handcuffs, or that the officers were walking casually five feet in front of me talking to one another, or that two other students from the frat house had been picked a

CHAPTER 25

Dante He wasn't a murderer. Was he? No. No he wasn't. Scary and intimidating, sure. But he wouldn't kill someone. Especially not his own roommate. It was all just a rumour. Someone had turned up dead and he was connected somehow. Todd and Asher had been friends but Asher had been arrested still. I pulled up my phone and scrolled through recent posts from students on Tiktok and Instagram. The campus shuttle was nearly empty this time of the afternoon. Mateo and Slyder had shown me how to get a pass to one. Apparently this was how students without a car moved around campus. The videos online had all sorts of nasty captions, but in all of them Asher Lowell stood with his head held high. He wasn't in handcuffs and there were other students invited to the station along with him but nobody seemed to have made a video about them. Asher was the person of interest. I watched, almost in awe as he remained unfazed. He didn't look guilty, he just looked really pissed. The bus dropped me

CHAPTER 26

Asher He didn't sleep in the dorm room that night. Shit. What was I expecting anyway. I'd scared the shit out of him. Within me, I could feel Dean sulking. He'd been this way all night till this morning, making sleep a very restless affair for me. He'd been looking forward to sharing a room with his mate finally. I'd crushed his hopes of that happening. I tried to ignore him. Tried to forget about the annoying nerd but I couldn't. He'd been following me. Why? I'd seen him when I came out of professor Furman's office. I'd just pretended not to and even if I didn't, I couldn't miss his scent. That was how I knew he was following me. That and his loud footsteps. A part of me felt thrilled. Dean's part. The rest of me was pissed. What the fuck did he think he was doing? I really wasn't in the mood for bullshit. I'd just spent the better part of my day locked up in an interrogation office and another hour getting an earful from Professor Firman. I hadn't even been able to grie

CHAPTER 27

Asher I didn't wear a suit. That would've looked preposterous. Also, I didn't own one. I barely owned anything formal. I had very few clothes. Half of which were still over at Todd's. I couldn't zip on over and grab them. I was pretty sure the police had taken them anyway. To log as evidence or whatever. Besides, I considered it too early to show up there. I heard the frat house had emptied. No one wanted to stick around if there was a wild animal or a serial killer on the loose. I settled for a deep blue shirt tucked into a pair of black jeans. I looked too plain and ridiculous in those, so I wore a black jacket on top. Much better. I combed my hair and tried to look harmless. Didn't work. I never looked harmless. But it was worth a shot. The bus ride to the school senate building was awkward at first. Everyone did a U-turn when they saw me seated at the back and sat themselves somewhere else. Only one girl gave herself the courage to approach and smile sweetly. She asked if

CHAPTER 28

Asher This seemed to make sense to them. They looked at each other, passing silent communication back and forth. “Be that as it may,” the drill sergeant began. Her name tag read Dr J.Marshall. Fitting. “The student was almost seriously harmed.” She said, her small eyes furrowing in annoyance. “I didn't harm him. I only wanted to give him a warning.” I argued. “And you didn't think a verbal warning would suffice?” Mr Jameson asked with an eyebrow raised. “The warning was verbal.” I countered. I could feel the atmosphere become charged with annoyance from all parties involved but I didn't care. “Asher,” Mr Firman began, leaving forward and looking at me earnestly, “Whether or not the reason sounds justified to you, the school policy remains fixed.” He sounded kind. Or at least he was trying to. Same way he sounded the previous day. I didn't like it. Didn't trust it. We had never been on friendly terms before now and him taking a sudden interest in my life sparked alarm bells

CHAPTER 29

Dante Mateo was certain Asher wasn't going to come back to the room that night. I'd spent the previous night at Amir's. He'd been more than happy to let me stay, especially after hearing what had happened with Asher. But I hadn't taken any change of clothes or books. Amir was the same height as I was but he was bigger. His jeans were a little too baggy for me and his shirts too big. I could manage them, but I didn't want to. They make me look odd. I looked odd enough with them as it was. Reporting to the school senate was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Majorly because Asher pulled some strings, but I knew it was also because of the attention on Asher Lowell at this time. There were still murmurs about his association with Todd's demise and that made him a person of interest to the school. All I had to do was give his name and everything went by so quickly. I felt bad about it. Everyone said I was doing the right thing and my neck still had the bruises from when he ch

CHAPTER 30

Asher Dean was straining inside of me. I could feel his rage. I began to run. I slammed into someone coming out of their room. Knocked him to the floor but I didn't stop. I ran out of the dormitory and kept running. He was pushing against me. I could feel my spine coming apart and knitting back together. It was fucking painful, but I didn't stop running. I had enough sense not to take the path past the frat house even though it was shorter. There could still be police snooping around and running past them in top speed would encourage them to give chase. I took a longer route. The minute I got past the less populated parts of campus, I ran faster, using Dean's rage to fuel my superhuman speed. I was barely past the treeline of the forest when my hold on him loosened just enough and he burst through. My bones broke apart and rearranged, my limbs elongated and filled out with muscle and fur. It was a part transformation since I had managed to somehow keep hold of him so I wasn'
