Amara’s POV The air hung thick with the faint, coppery smell of blood. I could almost taste it, a gross reminder of all the violence that had happened in the Alpha's place. Sitting on the cold floor didn't do much for the growing bruises on my skin. Each ache reminded me that staying alive came at a cost, that pain was just part of life now. I kept my eyes down, hands folded, as I listened to Magnus' booming voice fill the dim room. Kael stood in front of him, shoulders stiff, face like it was carved from rock. The torches flickered, casting long shadows that made Magnus seem even bigger and scarier, like a predator about ready to pounce. You think too much, kid, Magnus snapped, his voice sharp enough to cut. Thinking is weak, and weakness gets you killed. Kael didn't say anything, but I could see the anger flashing in his eyes.
