Chapter 1 Impact

(Sybil’s POV)My mother phoned me to ask me yet again for money. She had done that about a million times for the last few months, ever since I got divorced. Both of my parents were upset about the divorce, but only because I no longer had access to my billionaire ex-husband’s money. Technically, the money I had always given them for things like my brother’s hospital bills was my own money, not John’s, but they didn’t know that.“Mom,” I tried to reason with her, “I don’t have that much money, you know that.”“You could afford it if you were still married to John.” Her voice was as cold as ice.“Well, I’m not, so you’ll just have to get the money somewhere else.” I sighed with exasperation.“You’ll give me the money by the end of the day, or else.”“Or else what?” I shook my head at the thought of her actually threatening me now.“Or else I tell John everything.” She laughed evilly. “I’ll tell that wealthy ex-husband of yours that you’re pregnant with his baby and have been keeping i

Chapter 2 Not According to Plan

(Sybil’s POV)I ran to a road where I knew that there would be more traffic, waving my arms and trying to get someone’s attention. The hospital wasn’t that far away but it was the middle of the night. My father’s smirk was quickly replaced by a look of sheer panic when he turned his head toward the sound of the ambulance. He wasted no time in getting into his battered car and speeding away, fleeing the scene of his crime. As he drove by me, he yelled “I will get the money one way or another, you little bitch! You haven’t heard the last of this!” I could tell that he obviously didn’t want the paramedics to see that he was the one who had crashed into me.I also noticed that he wasn’t driving in the direction of the hospital, where his son was dying. That didn’t really surprise me, sadly. I didn’t think that my mother was planning to be by Charlie’s side either.Just as I was starting to realize that I couldn’t be with Charlie like I’d planned, my knees buckled under me. I saw the am

Chapter 3 A Visitor From Hell

(Sybil’s POV)When I woke up, I felt different somehow… Oh no, my baby.My baby was nowhere to be seen. I did see, though, that John’s mother was sitting in a chair by my bed.The sight of Mrs. Rutherford sitting there made my blood run cold. I hadn’t told John or his family about my pregnancy for many reasons, but I had a very specific reason for hiding it from her. John’s little sister Amelia was very sick, and Mrs. Rutherford was so desperate to find a way to save her daughter’s life that she had poked holes in all the condoms in my and John’s room a while ago, just to ensure that I would get pregnant. That way, Amelia could potentially have an organ donor and/or blood bank. As much as I loved Amelia, I didn’t want my baby to have that kind of life, existing for the sole purpose of providing spare parts to a wealthy girl.“You lying gold digger,” Mrs. Rutherford spat at me, “I knew you couldn’t be trusted. When your scumbag father phoned John last night, I was the one who answe

Chapter 4 Hello, Goodbye

(Sybil’s POV)For a split second I wondered if maybe I had misheard what he had told me. Charlie couldn’t be dead. He hadn’t even met my baby - his niece - yet. It just didn’t seem right.I could feel my eyes stinging with unshed tears. “I wasn’t with him,” I said, “I didn’t want him to be alone when he died.”“He wasn’t alone.” Mark smiled sadly at me. “When I was told what had happened and that you were unable to be with him like you’d wanted, I cleared my schedule and stayed right by his side until the very end. Brian was there, too. Don’t worry, he didn’t suffer.”“Thank you for being there for him,” I said sincerely, “I know that he appreciated all that you did to help him in his final months. So did I.”“I’ll miss his jokes.” Mark looked at me. “Would you like to see him? The NICU is on the way to his room, so we can stop and see your daughter first.”I nodded. “I’d like that.”“By the way,” he said as he helped me into the wheelchair, “I called Emma and told her everything, a

Chapter 5 Awkward Meeting

(Sybil’s POV)John was studying me intensely, clearly confused as to what I was doing in the hospital. He was holding a baby in one arm and much to my annoyance, his other arm was linked with his fiancée Willa’s. Or were they married by now? Actually, I didn’t want to know. From the puzzled look on his face as he took in the fact that I was sitting in a wheelchair and wearing a hospital gown, I got the impression that his mother hadn’t told him about the baby yet. I decided that, if John really didn’t know about the baby, I wouldn’t volunteer any information. Little Charlie doesn’t need him in her life.“Charlie died this morning,” I said, as an explanation for what I was doing there, “I was involved in a car accident when I was hurrying to get here in time. Nothing serious, just minor injuries.” I glanced at the baby he was holding.John followed my gaze. “This is my son.” Beside him, Willa was beaming. So he finally admitted it. He had told me multiple times before we got divorc

Chapter 6 Conflicting Emotions

(John’s POV)“What? You can’t be serious!” Willa scowled as she talked on the phone, then turned to face me. “I can’t believe this. Your ex-wife is going to be the next CFO of my family’s company. Why her? That woman can’t even drive without getting into a car accident!” She eyed me suspiciously. “Did you know about this?”I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. “No, this is as much of a shock to me as it is to you.”“Why her?” Willa asked again, more to herself than to me. I listened to Willa’s rant, wishing that she would move onto another subject. I didn’t want to think about Sybil. Seeing her again after six months opened up old wounds that, if I were completely honest with myself, had never truly healed. I couldn’t look her in the eyes without thinking about how she had succeeded in fooling me for three whole years. I knew going into our marriage that it was just a five-year contract, and that it wasn’t based on love. Somewhere along the way, however, I found myself fallin

Chapter 7 The Funeral

(Sybil’s POV)Charlie’s funeral was a few days after I left the hospital. Little Charlie was still in the NICU, of course, but I went to see her every day. I was planning on going to see her after the funeral.“Sybil!” Alex approached me and gave me a big hug. He was a close friend of mine, and he just happened to be John’s cousin. Those two had always hated each other, though. Their fathers and grandfather had pitted them against each other their entire lives, and they were constantly competing over everything. John had accused him of trying to steal me away while we were married, which was ridiculous. Alex and I were just friends.I hadn’t seen Alex for months. A very short time after the news broke out about my supposed gold digging ways, I found out that he and John were going on a business trip to England, where the overseas department of their family’s company was located. At the time, Alex had just returned after having been in charge of the department for three years. Then h

Chapter 8 Catching Up

(Sybil’s POV)Mark and Emma left me and Alex to talk, knowing that we would want to catch up after not seeing each other for months. “So,” Alex said, “what have you been up to since the last time we saw each other?”I knew that I had to be careful about how I answered his question. I hadn’t told him that I was pregnant. How could I? We hadn’t had a real conversation since before the scandal broke out. He and John had left for London almost immediately, with Willa apparently tagging along for some reason. After that, it seemed like every time I called Alex from wherever I happened to be traveling at that particular moment, things were kind of awkward between us. We were always on friendly terms, but something just seemed off. It was like he was hiding something from me. There were so many times that I wanted to tell him about the baby, but I could never find the right way to do it over the phone. I wasn’t sure how to do it by email or in a letter, either. It wasn’t that I was afraid o

Chapter 9 Inside the Drawer

(Sybil’s POV)I knew that I owed Alex an explanation, but at the same time, I couldn’t risk the chance of John coming closer and hearing me talk about little Charlie. I had to make sure Willa didn’t hear anything either. She wouldn’t hesitate to spill the beans to John. If there was an opportunity to try to make my life miserable, she always took it. This situation wouldn’t be any different. At least Alex found out my secret after the funeral and not before. People were starting to get ready to leave, so I thought that he and I could do the same. “Alex,” I said, taking his hand, “I’m so sorry that you had to find out this way, but I can explain everything.”He looked at me. “Do you really have a baby, Sybil? I had no idea,” he whispered, evidently knowing that I was trying to keep this a secret.I nodded. “Let’s go to the hospital. That’s where she is.”“Okay,” he said, “I’ll drive.”We went out to his car and got in. “I’m sorry I didn’t say anything before, Alex. Believe me, I wanted

Chapter 10 A Surprise for Amelia

(Sybil’s POV)I forced a smile when I saw Mrs. Rutherford, and she did the same. I briefly wondered if Alex had known that she would be here, and if in addition to wanting to see my baby, he wanted to avoid his aunt. While she wasn’t mean to him like she was to me, he was often frustrated by her behavior. He had seen her at Charlie’s funeral today, and probably yesterday when he came to see Amelia, so I didn’t blame him at all for needing a break from her.“Sybil!” Amelia’s eyes widened with excitement when she saw me. “I missed you so much!”I went over to her bed and scooped her up in a big hug. “I missed you, too. I’m sorry I couldn’t come until now.”Mrs. Rutherford stood up and smiled warmly at her daughter, clearly pleased to see her so happy. “I’ll be back in a little while, to give you two a chance to catch up.” When she brushed past me, however, she grunted under her breath and gave me a small scowl. She clearly hadn’t forgotten our conversation from the funeral, and I coul
