Talia’s POVJohn looked like he’d been shot. The blood drained from his face faster than I could blink as he staggered, taking several steps back before steadying himself. “You can’t do this to me, Talia. For God’s sake, you can’t.” John said, his eyes visibly turning red with anger. “I’m sorry, John. My mind is made up.” I said. As I stood there, the words hung in the air like a chandelier in a grand ballroom. John’s face, once a map of calm determination, now crumpled like parchment in a flame. The news had struck him with the force of a physical blow, leaving him breathless and reeling.“I’m not going to let you do this to me, I can’t. Not when we’re this close to the finish line, we’re fucking close, Talia!” John yelled, slamming his fist into the wall. I jumped back in fright as I watched him closely. His eyes which were bright and alert only a few minutes ago were now dulled like embers extinguished by a cold rain. They stared blankly at me, unfocused and menacing, as if th

Talia’s POVJohn stared at me for a moment before bursting into laughter. “You’ve got to be kidding me, right?” I remained silent and held his gaze in defiance until the smirk fell off his face. “No, I’m not. I meant what I said and if you didn’t get the words right the first time, I said I’m in love with Lorenzo.” “You’re stupider than I thought, Talia.” John massaged his temple as he shook his head. “I knew I was right to keep you in the dark right from the start.” “Your words aren’t going to change anything, John. I need you to accept I’m done with this and it’s all your show from now on.” I said. “You agreed to help me, remember?” John said as he walked behind his desk. “I did and I fulfilled my part of the bargain. The list you have. I gave that to you, have you forgotten so fast? I proposed this coalition and I’m putting it to an end so we can go our separate ways.” “Unfortunately, things don’t work that way around here,” John said, his eyes glued to the laptop in front

Talia’s POVI lost track of the number of hours I’d been held in this empty room against my wishes. Initially, I felt John was only trying to play a sick prank on me and he’d let me go after an hour or two but I quickly realized that he wasn’t messing around. He planned to keep me here and he was going to do just that. I’ve never felt this bad in my entire life and it was all my fault. I didn’t have the foresight to see that there was no way John would ever accept my decision to abandon the ship. I trusted myself too much and I assumed that John would easily let me go. But my mistakes were the least of my worries right now. It was impossible not to think of the threat John had made. I knew he had bouts of recklessness but I never assumed he’d ever take it to a whole different level. He was going to risk everything he’d worked for over the past month to use me as bait to lure Lorenzo out. What he failed to realize was the fact that the love was one-sided and to Lorenzo, I was nothi

Lorenzo’s POV“Lorenzo, I’m sorry but I have some bad news and you’re not going to like it.” I stared warily at Matteo as the words left his mouth. He wore a stoic expression on his face but I knew that didn’t tell the whole story. I sensed a premonition of imminent disaster and I knew I wasn’t the only one. A glance at Marissa’s crestfallen face revealed all I wanted to know, she could sense it too or she knew what Matteo was about to say. “What do you mean by bad news, Matteo?” I cleared my throat, managing to speak. We’d managed to overcome the last attack on one of our warehouses and we left the intruders wishing they’d never attempted to come for us in the first place. My eyes found their way to Matteo’s face and it was rather obvious that he had lost every trace of his composure but he was trying to maintain a calm demeanor. I had to give him props for his perseverance, I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes right now and I didn’t know anyone who would want to either.Unlike Mat

Lorenzo’s POVThere was a lot of frenzy going on in the house. This potentially had the effect of being the biggest war I’ve ever been in and I wanted to make sure that I was ready. John would be waiting for me with his allies and I didn’t want to go to the designated location with only a handful of men because there would be no way I would make it out of there alive. “Your plan,” Matteo began, staring at me. “Is it going to change the trajectory of this war?”“I can only hope it does,” I replied. “We have to give this our best shot, otherwise we’ll fade into history without leaving our mark on anything. It would be as good as dying.”“So what’s this whole plan about?” Matteo cleared his throat, drawing my attention to himself. “And how do we go about it?” “I’ve been thinking about what you said and I guess my initial thought was right. Talia is our best bet right now and we have to get her back.”“There’s something we’ve not discussed yet,” Matteo cut in. “John is the driving forc

Lorenzo’s POVI was ruthless with my decisions and I had to be if I wanted to get anything done. I was a lot more invested in this than Matteo or anyone else for reasons best known to me but it was nice to see that we were all on the same page. I hoped that I wouldn’t make any other decision without informing them but I could never tell. I also knew that if we were going to be in this together, we had to be a team and teammates carried each other along. As soon as my alarm went off, I practically jumped out of bed and headed straight for the bathroom. We were going to leave in an hour and the first impression mattered a lot, we couldn’t be a second late on our first meeting. We were going to put on a show, it was expected and we had to live up to the hype. I made my way downstairs to find out that Matteo and Marissa were already outside the front door, waiting for me. The engine was already running and everything had been prepared for our departure. “You’re all so eager to leave,

Lorenzo’s POVI was used to being placed in tight spots. The kind that gets you killed faster than you can blink. My mind had been going over different new scenarios in my head on how this would end and none of the options assured me. During one summer many years ago spent in the middle of the forest with my uncle was when I understood the power of leverage and patience, it was there, and then I had it all figured out. My plan for coming here was a calmer and safer one, one that needed patience to execute and that was a virtue Matteo solely lacked which was why I would be our spokesperson. There are times when you have to listen to your instincts and times when you have to do what needs to be done no matter what.I made a small fortune competing at arm wrestling events when I was in high school. I often skipped classes to visit the local pub a couple of streets away, there wasn’t anything new I hadn’t read beforehand anyways. During my visits there, I had never lost any match, it didn

Lorenzo’s POV “You have this all wrong, John. I have to admit.” I began. “Of all the things you could come up with, you had to use Talia to bring me here?” “I thought you three would understand why I did what I did,” John looked at me intently before holding Matteo’s and Marissa’s gaze as well. “When you claimed Talia to be your slave, she had nothing. She was a poor escort and on the receiving end of many of your friends’ sexual desires but you chose her. Why did you do it back then?” He finished, clearly taunting me with his words.“It’s starting to seem like you never moved on after I took your girlfriend from you. Is that what this is about?”9“If I’m being honest, I thought you three would never bother to ever show up. If it wasn’t for me, she’d be working a worse job right now or worse, dead.”“You think getting her to marry you would serve as your compensation for saving her life?” I scoffed. “Haven’t you heard our words, John?”“You always come back for one of its own.” I sm

Talia’s POV “This is another one of your pranks, isn’t it?” Lorenzo laughed. “You kidnapped Talia and you’re trying to use her as a way to get through to me, isn’t it?” “The only person who’s being played here is you, Lorenzo, and you haven’t realized it yet.” John shook his head. “Take a moment and think about everything so you can finally know the truth and learn that I’ve been three steps ahead of you the whole fucking way.”I was tired of hiding in the shadows and I knew it was time to go in. I’d managed to bargain with John and he said he’d set me free if I backed him up on this and if I failed to do so, I would be heading back to the dungeons when this was all over. The dining room fell silent as soon as I walked in through the doors. I had wanted to come in as quietly as I could but given that they were all facing the door I was walking out from, it was pointless. I could hear them arguing tersely as I made my way toward the dining room, the discussion was getting harsher an

Talia’s POV John’s guards reacted quickly and one of them stopped the bullet with his chest, dropping dead instantly while the rest scrambled away, protecting John while returning fire on us. “John got lucky but we can’t turn our back now.” I said to Marissa and Matteo who were hiding behind a large statue. Talia had managed to be dragged away by John but I was going to get her back, I was certain of it. Retrieving it from my pocket, I shielded my eyes from the bright sun reflecting on the phone as it stopped ringing before I could click on the receiver. The notification light on my phone blinked softly notifying me of a text message received minutes earlier. We’re here and we’re proceeding with your instructions. Do we have the go ahead to continue?I nodded as I read the text before giving him the go ahead. It was from an unknown number but I didn't need to guess who sent it. It was a typical message, long enough to relay the message. My uncle was the most punctilious person
