Chapter 42: Claire’s POV

After showering, I get out and see Leo immediately begin staring at the floor. I sought comfort and right now, he felt like the only person I could trust.I walk over to him in my towel, curl myself up in his lap and tuck my face into his neck. I feel him tense and then relax as he wraps his arms around me and begins to rub my head.“It’s going to be okay, Claire. I’ll do everything I can this time.” I knew he meant what he said but I also knew that the person doing this had more dedication on hurting me than he had the availability to protect me. I simply nod by head yes against his skin and inhale his scent.Leo carefully sits me on the tub as he stands and gets my clothes for me to dress. After helping me get dressed, he carries me to bed and lays me down. I pull Leo into a hug - silently thanking him for everything he had done for me today.“Can you stay?” I ask in a small whisper. I see Leo’s eyes brighten and darken for a moment. He wanted to hear those words but under different

Chapter 43: Charlotte’s POV

Not that it’s a fresh new day, it’s time to execute my plans. The first part of my plan is to have Francisco appoint his men to plan drugs in Matthew’s home which I conveniently located through his sources. With Matthew being arrested, Claire would be distracted in try to save her brother and void the new caution she’s developed.I place an innocent call to Matthew’s job and ask if he was in today. I was pleased to hear that he was. I then texted Francisco to let him know that everything was set. His men staked out the apartment and found it to be completely vacant.Francisco ordered his men to enter the apartment and stash a lump some of drugs in different areas to stage Matthew as a drug dealer. Once the drugs were placed, Francisco placed an anonymous call to the DEA from a pay phone located just outside of the city.He alerted them to a possible drug dealer in the city and gave them Matthew’s name and address. He stated that he had been approached in the street and offered a deal

Chapter 44: Francisco’s POV

It wasn’t hard to frame this Matthew fellow. His apartment was vacant, not even a dog to defend his territory. A sad method of living if you ask me. I had my men in and out with ease. The drugs were but a small price compared to what I would receive for my cooperation from Charlotte and I would do anything to please her.My evil little mon Cher was worth the work. Her criminal and sadistic ways excited me.I’d like to say I had turned over a new leaf before coming back to her. I had been living in France for a few years, conducting legitimate businesses under the financial pretenses of my mafia life and I had been comfortable for the most part but I had become bored of being a “good guy” and longed for excitement. Although I had no intention of coming back until I heard the news about Charlotte’s father.I came all the way here to be her confidant. A bold effort in trying to show her that the man she had chosen was the wrong choice. An effort, even I knew, would be fruitless. Even as

Chapter 44: Claire’s POV

I awoke after a much needed rest in Leo’s arms. I look up to see that he is already awake. He had stayed with me the entire night. I had almost expected Charlotte to call him beckoning him back to her and away from me.“I should get ready to head to my suite. I still have a few blueprints that need to be finished today.” “Okay. I’ll have my driver bring some things for me to change and we’ll head to your suite. No sense in going alone.” He says as he pulls on his shirt. I nod. As much as I had wanted to decline, I knew that him escorting me was a safer approach to me calling for a cab.I get dressed and head to the kitchen to see Jasmine just getting off the phone and turning to me with a smile.“Hey, just got the report from last night and surveillance didn’t have any issues or intruders. How did you sleep?” “I slept okay. I just have to get some blueprints done. Leo is getting ready so he can accompany me to my suite.” I say as I make him a cup of coffee.“That’s nice of him. If

Chapter 45: Claire’s POV

We arrive at the county jail and are met by two officers in the lobby. We’re told to provide our identification and sign-in at the front desk for visitations. I had never been in a place like this before and the eeriness was overwhelming. We reach the front desks and I provide my brother’s name to the officer behind the glass. “Identification?” He asks as he types my brother’s name into the computer. I could every click of the keys as he typed, almost as if I was in a trance or worse - a nightmare. Leo hands him our identification and places his hand on the small of my back. I flinch at his touch. Not because it was his but because of the overwhelming nerves running through me. He looks over at me and gives a nod to show his understanding.“Have a seat. You’ll be called back in the next 15 minutes. You’ll go through security and search before you can see any inmates.” He prints our visitors passes.“What about our identification?” I ask quietly.“You receive them once you leave. That

Chapter 45: Leonardo’s POV

Claire is shaken by this ordeal but I lead her through the process carefully. We give our identification and I let speak. I know talking was her way of coping in this scenario. She had questions and I wanted her to ask for the answers she needed while I mentally juggle through the possibilities of what could’ve happened.Matthew has been arrested for possessing narcotics and is being charged with some very serious felonies. But this is where I’m stumped. If Matthew really was distributing and dealing drugs, he would’ve never came to Claire and I for money for past gambling addictions. What Claire doesn’t know is that I knew every single time that she had given him hush money. She had tried to keep him from extorting money from me and she paid him personally out of her own funds.I also know that Claire has a bad history and fear of drugs but she’s never felt comfortable talking about it so I’ve never pushed her to open up. I had done research about the death of her parents when she to

Chapter 45: Matthew’s POV

It had been hours since I’d been forcibly taken from my job, charged and arrested. The officers gave a list of serious charges and told me that an anonymous tip had been placed, leading them to search my apartment and find my “stash”. But I had no stash. I could never do drugs after seeing first-hand of it did to pops. The man went from father of the year to a doped-up junkie in the span of three months. He had become a zombie version of himself with nothing to look forward to - other than his next fix.I may have had a bad gambling rep but I had finally gotten my life together. I paid my debts off and decided to get a good job with decent pay. I moved into a cozy one bedroom apartment and I even met someone: Starla. I wasn’t well-off by any means but I was happy. I had finally pulled myself out of the trenches and I felt good about it. I was able to finally be present. And now, I’ve been framed. Back to the trenches I go.I call Claire and beg for her help. Chapter 46: Claire’s POV

We go through security and search and are brought to a private room where we’re instructed to knock on the door twice if we want to end our visitation early for any reason. Leo pulls out my seat for me as we both sit and wait to see my brother. I see Matthew being brought in, chains fastened to his hands, feet and waist. An overstatement in my eyes. Matthew was no danger to anyone other than himself. And lately, he had turned his life around and was doing so well for himself. It saddened me to see him here after all the work he’s put in to become a better person.I watch as they carefully remove his chains and cuffs and close the door, leaving just and Matthew to speak. “I’m thankful that you came Claire. And thank you for accompanying her, Leonardo. I know this must be hard.” He says quietly as if she’s ashamed of himself.“What happened, Matthew?” I ask as I place my hand over his to redirect his eye contact to me. “I got up in the morning and got ready for work. And about two hou

Chapter 47: Claire’s POV

We spend the rest of our time automating Matthew and asking him about Starla. It was the only way to make light of the conversation we had previously and I could see that it did that for Matthew. His eyes lit up at the thought of her and becoming a father. An opportunity I never got to experience. After a few minutes, a guard arrives.“Time’s up!” He says abruptly. I see Matthew lower his head and rise to his feet to be chained back up and returned to his cell.“Matthew.” I say as I jump up to hug him. It pained me to see what he had to go through.“I love you, Claire and I’m sorry for everything I put you through before.” I didn’t know if it was his current position that made him vulnerable or if that was something he just never had the courage to say but it broke me. I hugged him tightly. He was my baby brother and as his protector, I had failed him.The guard instructs me to release him and I stand there - watching as they take him away. Every fiber of my body was tinged with pain.

Chapter 47: Leonardo’s POV

From the moment we sat down, I could tell that Claire was emotionally teeter tattering on the edge of a breakdown. She was clammy, fidgeting, hyper-focused, distant and she was silent. Not quite - silent. I hoped that seeing Matthew would stop her from tipping over the edge but I saw the way she looked at him when he was brought in wearing those chains. Matthew didn’t know Claire had been pregnant when he mentioned about his becoming a father. I was happy for him. He finally had something positive in life. Something important enough to change him and I know Claire was happy for him.Claire almost crumbles at the word: pregnant. I don’t think she’s made any time to cope with the loss of our son. She’s kept herself engulfed in work to avoid the thought entirely. I squeeze her thigh as Matthew talks about his growing family. As much as it hurt Claire, it hurt me as well.My actions led to Claire believing I didn’t want a child and hiding her pregnancy. My beliefs led me to accuse Claire
