When Angela forced me to divorce Giselle back then, I was still smug about it. Now, however, I am consumed by regret. I couldn’t imagine how much suffering she must have endured during those two years, battling illness and repaying debts all on her own. I also couldn’t forgive Angela for everything she had done to Giselle. During the three days of detention, I begged the police to let me make a phone call. Through that call, I learned of Angela’s scheming—how she had surreptitiously transferred the company to herself. I was overcome by both grief and anger. It was my fault. I had forced Giselle away, leaving her vulnerable and allowing Angela to exploit her. But I had grown wiser over these two years. I had the company’s financial ledgers in my hands. If I wanted to, I could reduce Angela to nothing. After leaving the police station, I went to find Ella. I wanted to see Giselle one last time. I wanted to apologize to her.
